In 2006, it was overhauled to upgrade the photo galleries to add streaming video capability. In 2008, the site was reconceived and simplified as a photo blog.

The reality is that since the kids were born, we've barely had time to download pictures off the camera, let alone blog about them. Once updating the site became more stressful than enjoyable, I realized it's time to shut it down. Maybe someday I'll find something else to do with this site, but for now, we're signing off.

You can still find us on Facebook... which is easier to update and reaches a broader group of friends, anyway. We'll still put pictures online, but the site will be invitation-only for privacy reasons. If you'd like access, I'd be glad to offer it to family and friends... just shoot one of us an email.

Hurricane Ike

We never thought that we'd be affected by a hurricane (or the remnants thereof) living in Ohio, but we were wrong. Yesterday, tropical depression Ike rolled through the area and caused quite a mess. For several hours yesterday afternoon, there were 50 mph sustained winds with even stronger gusts. One neighbor lost half of the siding of the back of their house, and another lost a tree. We lost a few shutters, but I was lucky enough to be in the front yard when they came loose, so I was able to chase them down.

This morning, we woke up to find out that we were part of the lucky 10% of area residents who HAD power... all the schools and businesses were closed today. Grandma and Grandpa Eichstadt lost power yesterday afternoon, and are being told that it could be days before it's back on. With 2 little ones in the house, we're certainly thankful that it wasn't us. We'll have to see if I get another day off of work tomorrow. In the mean time, we'll be heading to the park with the kids to enjoy the mid-70's temperatures that came in the wake of the storm.

It really makes your heart go out to those in the gulf states who bear the brunt of these storms... I can't imagine. Amy's uncle John lives in Houston, and rode the storm out in his 8th story apartment, and he seems to have made it out unscathed. I have a lot of coworkers in Houston, and spent a considerable amount of time there in 2005 for business. One weekend Amy flew in to visit and we went with Uncle John to Galveston for the afternoon. Looking at the pictures of the aftermath just makes you sick. Here's a post-Ike picture of the restaurant where we ate lunch that day.

Family Update

I'm in the process of getting caught up on the last month or so of pictures... with the kids it's not always easy to find time to escape to the office to pick out pictures to upload. Anyway, enough excuses, if you head over to the photo albums, you'll find a whole bunch of new pictures under August and September family photos. Also, I've updated the Tuesday pictures... Emily's getting so big! Hard to believe that she's already over 10 weeks old, and she's already much bigger than Abbey was at 16 weeks (close to 13 pounds).

In other "Family news", Abbey has started official potty training. She's been using the potty sporadically for some time now, but we weren't brave enough to take the full-time plunge. I'll tell you... it's a wild ride that first time you let her out of the bathroom without a diaper on!!

King's Island

Abbey, Amy and I enjoyed a day at King's Island yesterday. Every year, at the end of the season, Procter and Gamble rent out the park for all of their employees, retirees, and families to enjoy a free day they call "Dividend Day". We're happy to partake, since GE cut morale-boosters like this from the budget in the Jack Welch days, long ago.

Last year was the first time we took Abbey, and this year was even better (Emily enjoyed the morning with Grandma and Grandpa). She's 36 inches tall (by about 3 hairs on her head), so she could ride quite a few more rides this year than last. She had a blast riding the various pint-size rides, culminating in a ride on the Wild Thornberry's River Adventure... basically a log flume for kids. It was the only "Moderately Thrilling Ride" in the park that would allow 36-inchers. (Most of her rides were prominently labeled "Low Thrill Ride", a claim that Abbey would certainly contest).

In the end, Amy didn't ride any real roller coasters, and I only rode one, but it was totally worth it to see Abbey have such a great time. We were sure to collect our bag of P&G goodies (mostly faltering international products or manufacturing overruns/defects... but hey, it's free!) And before you ask, yes, we got home in time to watch the Notre Dame/Michigan and Virginia Tech/Georgia Tech football games.

Emily's Baptism Weekend

Family and friends were in town this weekend for Emily's baptism. Nana and Poppy flew in from Delaware, Grandma and Grandpa came over with Quinn and Makenna, and Godparents Mark and Erin came in from eastern Ohio. We definitely missed David and Kate (Dave was in Malaysia for business), and especially Ginger and Andrew, who suffered an appendicitis attack a few days earlier. On Saturday, we enjoyed a barbecue with the whole crowd to watch (in horror) the Notre Dame football game. On Sunday, we the baptism was beautiful, and everyone returned to our house for a brunch and celebration.

Both Abbey and Emily were baptized in the same gown, a garment that was handmade by the girls' great-great grandmother, over 100 years ago. It's a family baptism gown that's been worn by many family members through the years, and one that's an honor to have been able to use for both girls. The detail in the gown is just amazing.

Abbey's idolization of Makenna continued in force, with Mark and Erin's girls there to join in the fun. I think Abbey summed it up, as Makenna and Quinn left, when she told me "Daddy, Makenna awesome!" Not sure where she learned that, but she's been saying it ever since.

We had a nice extended weekend with Nana and Poppy, who, thanks to retirement, were able to come early and stay late. On Thursday, cousins Makenna and Quinn came to stay with Grandma and Grandpa for the weekend. Amy and the kids had fun visiting with them on Thursday afternoon, and again on Friday at a local water park.

Makenna and Abbey certainly hit it off... Abbey followed her like a puppy dog all weekend, mimicking her every move.

On Saturday, Amy's Uncle John came in from Texas, and we all went to the Cincinnati Zoo. A new giraffe exhibit opened this summer, so Abbey got her first look at a giraffe up close. One of the new attractions is the ability to feed the giraffes... an experience that turned out to be a little to intense for Abbey

Mid-week, I received a call from one of my best friends from high-school, Phil Wirtz. He and his family (all six!) were returning from a family funeral in Iowa, and were planning on passing through Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon. Luckily, the timing worked out, and Phil's family was able to spend about an hour with us on Saturday afternoon.

I think the kids enjoyed the time out of the car, and we certainly enjoyed the visit, even if it was way too short. Either way, a pleasant surprise!

Saturday night, we enjoyed ribs at Grandma and Grandpa's house with Makenna, Quinn, and Uncle John. On Sunday, we were joined by Andrew and Ginger, and had a great day showing off Emily and wearing out Abbey. Abbey had an incredible weekend playing with Makenna, and I'm pretty sure Makenna felt the same.

St. John's Festival

It's Catholic Festival season here in Cincinnati, and our local parish had it's festival last weekend. She's growing up so fast! This year's party was a low-key affair compared to last year, but she was happy to be joined by both sets of grandparents. Mom made buttermilk pancakes and a "Blues Clues" chocolate cake for desert... a perfectly wholesome breakfast when you're 2 years old. Once she came down from the sugar rush, she had a great time opening presents, including a play kitchen. We really wanted to give her something special so she wouldn't mind giving up her old bedroom to the new baby.

Pictures from Daycare

As Amy starts her maternity leave, here are some pictures of Abbey playing at daycare. I intended on posting to the blog more regularly, as the little things happen, but we've been so caught up in getting ready for the Imminent Arrival, I've fallen behind (as usual).

Here are some highlights from May:

» Amy's parents sold their house in Parkersburg, and officially moved to Cincinnati full-time. We couldn't be more excited!

» We spent a delightful Mother's day at Ikea shopping for Abbey's new room. Frankly, if it weren't for Ikea, I think Abbey would have moved into an empty room. That place is great.

» As part of the move, we became the lucky recipients of the Eichstadt's piano. I'm very excited to finally have a piano again. I've had a few chances to take it for a spin... Yikes! I need to practice! Abbey seems quite taken with the new "toy". I can see many years of piano lessons in our future.

» On Memorial Day, we went out for ice cream. Abbey got her own cone for the first time, and she devoured it like a pro. I wonder where she picked up that skill...

Here are some highlights so far from June:

» With the nice June weather, Abbey wants to spend all weekend in the "wa wa". We've already been to the pool twice and fired up the back-yard sprinkler.

» The 7-year cicadas have hatched... not really a highlight, but it's really gross. You can't walk anywhere without getting attacked by the beady-eyed bugs.

» Church festival season has begun... one of our favorite times of year. There's nothing like spending a Saturday night eating a walking taco and funnel cake. I think it's a Midwestern thing. This year, Abbey particularly enjoyed the inflatable bouncy palace.

» The Ohio University quarter ended last week. With it ends Grandma Eichstadt's distinguished career as a Chemistry Professor. Congratulations!

» We spent Father's Day at home this year, but did enjoy going out to dinner and a movie... thanks to Grandma and Grandpa, our new babysitters!

» Amy's getting quite pregnant and quite uncomfortable! Today is her last day of work before maternity leave begins.

Big Changes for Abbey!

This has been quite a month for little Abigail. First, she transitioned from the "Frog" room to the "Tiger" room at daycare. It seems like every time she moves to the next room, she just explodes with new abilities (good and bad!). The biggest change is that they have potties in the Tiger room, so she gets frequent chances to try her luck on the toilet. We're very proud to announce that things have gone spectacularly! In the evenings and weekends, she now lets us know when it's time to go, and she takes care of her business with a smile (and a few vigorous, self-assuring "Yeah, Abbey!" cheers).

In the Tiger room, most of the other girls wear pigtails. To daddy's delight, almost overnight, she decided that she wanted pigtails, too, and stopped pulling them out. We just love it... she's so adorable!

At home, little sis is due any day now, so we decided it was time to make the move to a big girl room. We've been working on her new room for several months, since we're going to redecorate the nursery for the baby. She adjusted almost immediately, and now falls asleep with no trouble at all. If she would just move from sleeping on the floor to the bed, I'm sure she'd be more comfortable... I guess the ability to make decisions like that are the essence of her becoming a "big girl".

It's hard to believe that I'm sitting here writing this on our 4th anniversary... time certainly flies. It's hard to believe how things have changed in such a short time!

Abbey's Expanding Vocabulary

Abbey has been saying several new words each day and at dinner tonight she surprised us with two more, neither of which we taught her (I swear!). We decided to go out for a family dinner at a kid-friendly pizza buffet restaurant. After a few slices of pizza, Scott went up to the dessert section of the buffet and brought back a few things for us to all share: a cinnamon roll, a brownie, and a pizza slice with an apple strudel topping. Abbey enjoyed a bite of the apple strudel pizza and then pointed to the plate and said "brownie" (or more like bow-ie). We were both like , "where did she learn that?" So I cut her a piece and she popped it in her mouth and asked for more. After a few more, she licked her fingers and said, "chocolate" (chaw-ate). I honestly think that she has only had a bite of something chocolate 2-3 times, so she didn't learn these words from us....we are chalking that up to day care.

Professional Spoon User

Abbey's coordination has really improved in this last month and Scott and I now declare that she is a professional spoon user and clearly a lefty. I've been running the site off of a computer in the house until now, but I just didn't have enough bandwidth to do what I was trying to do. Instead, I have a variety of Google services powering the back-end of the website (although the visual style should be identical to the changes made last month). If something doesn't look right on your browser, please let me know!

For now, I'm going to try to continue to host the photo albums from home... we'll see if it slows the site down too much. I'm using Blogger to power the blog, and a site called "Vimeo" to serve up videos. We'll see how these services work out... I might need to change things up again.

This weekend, I'll try to catch up on pictures... I haven't put anything up since February. Luckily, they were able to switch to another airline for the return flight, just in time to fly down to Cancun for their anniversary. Other than that drama, we had a great time. Abbey enjoyed having Nana and Poppy babysit on Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday, we went to Parkey's Farm, a local petting zoo.
