Enjoy your Wax & Wick candle to the fullest by adhering to these essential maintenance tips.

Key Care Instructions:

Monitor Wax Levels: Stop using your candle when there is about 1/4 inch of wax left at the bottom to prevent the glass container from breaking.

Proper Environment: Always burn your candle in a room that is well-ventilated yet free from drafts, which can cause uneven burning.

Limited Burn Time: Refrain from burning your candle for more than four hours consecutively. Extinguish it after four hours, let it cool for two hours, trim the wick, and then relight if desired.

Safety First: Keep your candles out of reach from children and pets. The glass can get hot and pose a hazard when the candle is lit.

Exercise Caution: Handle your Wax & Wick candles with extreme care. Never leave them burning unattended and ensure flammable materials are not nearby.

Trim the Wick: Maintain the wick at about 1/8 of an inch to promote optimal burning and prolong your candle's life.

Post-Extinguishing Care: After extinguishing your candle, ensure it's not smoking, the flame is completely out, and the wax has cooled before putting it away.

Cleaning Your Candle: To clean dust or smudges off your candle jar, use a soft cloth or piece of nylon. You can dampen the cloth for more stubborn marks.

Storage Tips: Store your candles in a cool, dark, and dry place when not in use to prevent damage and fading from sunlight or harsh indoor lighting.

Using White and Black in Your Minimalist Decor

In an earlier blog post, "Minimalist Branding, Decor, and Decluttering," I wrote about how our candles won't "emasculate your space." As I reflect back on writing that I realize (WE realized) that candles don't have a gender. Why would we would eliminate an entire group of people by promoting our brand as "masculine" when a candle has no affiliation, male or female. It was our fragrances that were the REAL part of the whole. Our entire package had to be upgraded.

We found that offering up simple black and white jars with our already excellent scents would help us as a brand. The straight sided jars are just opaque enough to give the appearance of something decorative without restricting light from the FSC-certified double wood wick.

The opacity of the jars does something for our glass that clear glass simply cannot compete with - NO visible wax residue. Our wicking process already eliminates the wax from sticking to the glass as it burns the new glass takes it one step further. The white and black jars have our simple, minimal branding on a die-cut heat resistant clear sticker.

Our candles are still made with 100% undyed soy wax from American farmers, FSC-certified double wood wicks from American loggers, and handcrafted in the USA. Simple, elegant, straight lines will add another dimension to your decor. Try one today!

How to get Candle Wax Off the TV Screen?

Having wax on the TV Screen is a bit out of the way. But with kids around, you can always expect such weird things. So, if the candle wax has spilled on your TV Screen, how can you remove it without causing any damage to it?

The answer is simple. You can adapt the method discussed in this article. But before we proceed to the actual process, let us remind you that you should not use any sharp object on the screen as it can cause significant damage. Similarly, going rigorous on your screen is not an option either. So, stick with the method below to get the best results without any damage.

Procedure to get candle wax off TV screen:

Here’s the process to get the wax candle off your TV Screen.

Use a rubber spatula (you’ll find it in your kitchen) to remove the large chunks of wax.

Mix hot water with a few drops of a dishwasher. Put this mixture in a bowl.

Use a cloth or sponge; dip it in this mixture. Squeeze all the water out of it.

Rub this sponge on the screen at the spot where you see the wax residue. Do it carefully, as you must not expose your screen to extra pressure.

Dip it in the soapy mixture again and rub the screen gently.

Continue doing it till you get the clean screen. It will take a few minutes, but you’ll get one for sure.

Wipe the entire screen with a clean, dry cloth and enjoy.

Summing up:

Wasn’t the procedure of removing wax off the TV screen simple? You can use it on all types of screens and glass surfaces without any problems.

100% Soy Wax vs. Soy Blend Wax vs. Paraffin Wax

Our candles use 100% soy wax and emit no black petroleum based soot. Go ahead and try it with your current paraffin or soy blend candle - I'll wait. Okay? Light the candle and let it burn near a wall or piece of paper. You'll notice a black imprint on whatever surface you choose. If it sticks there - won't it stick to the cilia in the your nose or even worse YOUR LUNGS?

100% Soy Wax

- Eco-friendly: Ever have a candle trigger an allergic reaction? Our soy candles contain no additives nor do they ever use any type of blending process. The result? Clean burning with no petroleum base.

Our candles are made in the USA with our soy coming from American farmers. You'll get a product we stand behind, backed by American pride.

Safe for the environment: Once you've burned our organic candle to the bottom and there's nothing left to use, you can scrape out the rest of the wax and save the glass! The wax is safe enough to eat!

Oh yeah, we almost forgot! Soy candles burn for 30-50% longer than paraffin or paraffin blends. Don't be fooled by the word blend, that is still a mixture using some paraffin wax and is definitely not suitable for burning.

Soy-Paraffin Blend Wax

Blends are just a clever mask for companies to be able to use the word soy in their candles.

Petroleum based paraffin is still prevalent in the mixture and has been known to cause certain types of cancer (or birth defects or reproductive harm) according to California's Prop 65.

Certain blends offer the fragrance throw of a paraffin candle with the safety of a soy candle.

No technical information says the exact percentage of mixture but technical information does say, "this product not intended for food contact."

Paraffin Wax

Known to contain cancer-causing carcinogens.

Burns very quickly.

Not safe for human consumption (doesn't digest), would you breathe something your body can't handle?

Great for scent throw. Candlemakers use paraffin wax in order to cut costs and save on manufacturing. More than likely, the paraffin candle you buy is not made in the USA. Our 100% soy candles are handcrafted in the USA.

What is Cold Scent Throw?

Soy candles and fragrance oils are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations during the actual pouring of the candle. Adding to this, curing times for soy candles are significantly longer than with traditional paraffin wax candles (who needs tradition?). When we heat our wax to a minimum of 185 degrees fahrenheit the milky white soy chips turn into a beautiful golden liquid. If our fragrance oils have a flash point (we'll talk about flash point in another post) above 185 degrees we will mix in the oils at that temperature, let it cool down to 135 or so, and then pour the oil/wax mixture into our jars. If the flash point for the fragrance oil is somewhere under 185 we wait until the wax has cooled enough to integrate the oils. This helps eliminate some of the common problems 'home-based-candle-makers' come across when pouring their own candles.

We pour all of our candles one at a time and batch scents together to create uniformity among the batches. It doesn't exactly matter what vessel we're pouring into as long as it's safe to reach optimal burning temperatures. Our wood wicks burn evenly across the entire candle creating a pool that burns for approximately twice as long as a similarly sized paraffin candle. We don't use a paraffin blend to cheat our way to a cold scent throw. The cold throw is determined by the percentage of fragrance used in relation to the amount of wax melted. Some companies go out of their way to use double the scent or even paraffin blends to help the scent integrate with the wax. Soy wax doesn't always cooperate with fragrance oils, therefore finding the correct percentage of oil maximizes the cold scent throw and guarantees that our candles stand up with the big name competitors without having to resort to laziness.

All of our cold scent throws are in direct result of hours testing the way the oil mixes with the wax. When you purchase your first wax & wick 100% soy candle you'll notice a clean-burning difference immediately. Say no to paraffin and yes to soy.

The 3oz. votive sized candle should be burned for no longer than 45 minutes each time you light it for the best results. Glass is a great conductor of heat and due to the small stature of this candle it gets hot very quickly. Exercise caution if you decide to move this candle while it's burning or just after extinguishing. Expect 10-20 hours of burn time from this sampler candle.

Our 6oz. tin is similar in burn time to the 3oz. votive size, 45 minutes per use. The diameter of the tin is larger than the votive so moving during or after use is safe. Remember, a small fire can turn into a big fire very quickly. This candle will burn for 25-35 hours.

Now, the 10oz. 100% soy wax candle can burn for three hours at a time. Let the wax pool around the FSC-certified double wood wick each time you use the candle. When using the candle in three hour increments the candle will burn for 50-60 hours.

Steps:

Melt 1 lb. of 464 Soy Wax (16 oz.) using a double boiler. Heat wax to 185 F. (It is also a good idea to pre-heat the glass to about 125 F to avoid "pull away.")

Add fragrance. You can use 1 oz. of Fragrance oil. When adding fragrance, stir well and remove from heat. Do not let fragranced wax continue to heat as the fragrance will evaporate out of the wax.

While the wax is cooling, place a wick stickum on the bottom of the pretabbed wick and center the wick inside the bottom of the jar. Repeat this step for any remaining jars.

When the wax cools to 125 F, carefully pour the wax evenly into the jars.

Place the wick bar with the center peak facing up on top of your jar. Pull wick taut and gently press wick into the opening of the wick bar. This will keep the wick straight and centered while the candle is cooling.

For best results, let the candles cool at room temperature overnight.

Trim wick to 1/4 in. before lighting. (do this each time you light it) and enjoy your candle.

Discontinuing Clear Jars / Focusing on New Glass

Wax & Wick started as an attempt to private label some other guys candles. In the Spring of 2015 we received samples of soy candles that were hyped up to be the best candles in America. The samples fell short and the price to do business with this particular company didn't seem to provide any value or satisfaction for us.

We had to learn how to make our own candles. The process for learning the art of candlemaking came with a huge learning curve. Countless hours of practice pours, fragrance load, curing times, etc. All of these pieces came together slowly but surely.

The jars they used looked okay but were hardly anything unique or marketable. They had slight advantages over every other kind of jar we looked at. They we're available and looked better and were available locally. We can't be mad at them, they helped us start our company. Without those clear jars we would still be figuring out how to use someone else's product.

The clear jars were a stepping stone and a great medium to deliver our real scents with our double wood wicks. Unfortunately, we have outgrown them. Our brand has changed significantly since the first days of mixing scents in my kitchen, to upgrading our pour pots, testing damn near every fragrance oil available, and moving into a bigger facility to help us keep up with demand. This post isn't to sever the tie with clear, just wish it well as we phase it out in favor of our new black and white jars.

One day we will find the perfect clear jar - or we will just continue using our beautiful new black and white jars.
7 Pro Tips to Remember Before Buying Your Next Scented Candle

Read this and buy from Wax & Wick.

If the idea of burning scented soy candles in the summer makes you balk, you’re doing it wrong. This time of year—more than any other, really—is open season for aromas in a man’s space. Some of them (like a fresh breeze coming in through open windows at night) are pleasant; others (your gym shorts sitting unwashed in a hamper for a week) aren’t.

But a scented candle isn’t meant to be a bottle of Febreze. It’s not there to cover up what you don’t want your guests to notice. It should, according to Myriam Badault, the global creative director of the French home-goods and skincare brand Diptyque, enhance every room of your home.

“It's really linked to what you want to express,” Badault told us at an event celebrating Diptyque’s recent 34 collection in Brooklyn. "And your mood also. Sometimes, if you're in a bad mood, you will look for a more exhilarating or exotic scent in organic candles.”

So how do you strike the right note and find the candle that’s best for you? Read on for Badault’s expert advice.

1) Consider Your Space
You wouldn’t wear just one color head to toe every day, because that would be boring and possibly inappropriate. By the same token, Badault advises that you not burn the same candle in every room of your house. She burns Diptyque’s Thé scented candle in her kitchen but opts for the house’s Ginger and Orange Blossom diffusers in bathrooms.

But you also want to choose a fragrance that aligns with your general vibe. “It's really linked to decoration and what you want to express,” Badault said. If your space is all blues and grays, go for something herbal. If you have exposed brick and other shades of red, choose something woody.

2) Mix Things Up
Fact: You can (and should) burn more than one candle at once. “In my home, when spring is coming, I will use a blend in the living room of rose and ivy, because it's very fresh,” Badault said. The goal is to find scents that complement each other. Diptyque’s Santal candle, for example, pairs well with amber fragrances like Opoponax and Benjoin.

3) Never Go Floral
Don’t think floral scents are just for women. You might find yourself drawn to lilac or tuberose when you’re shopping for a candle.

“Once I had a very funny experience,” Badault said. “I was working over Christmas in one of our shops in Paris, and a man came in and he wanted to buy a candle for himself. So I began with very typical masculine scents, and he said, ‘No, no, that's not what I want.’ And so I moved to a floral one and he said, ‘That's it.’ ”

4) Experiment
To that last point, you should be open to a variety of different fragrances. When you’re trying to find the right scents for your space, the most important thing to do is “experiment,” Badault explained. “It's fun, really.”

5) Stick with What You Love
That said, once you strike the right balance, stick with it. It’ll eventually become a signature that people will remember when they visit your home. Badault, who leads development of new products for Diptyque, says her favorite of their candles is an old standard, Musc. “It's very special because it was the first Diptyque candle I bought, like, 25 years ago,” she said. “So it's still one of my favorites.”

Buying Guide to Candles

6 Things to Know Before You Buy

As mood-setters, candles are among the hardest-working decorations you can find: When lit, they cast a warm glow (and often, a great scent) that can transform the ambience of almost any room to warm and festive. But even before you light it, a candle's color, and the way you display it, will amp up a room's style-factor.

But the 'burning' question is: How do you choose a great candle? Easy. Determine how these six must know facts apply to you, and you'll know the right way light up your home.

Fact #1: Candle Material

Among the most popular candle materials, you'll find:

Soy. These candles are the most even-burning of your options. Scented soy candles also tend to have especially pleasing aromas. But because soy is so soft, you usually find soy candles sold in glass containers, not in candles you can place in a candleholder you already own. (One way to get the best of both worlds is to find a soy candle that's mixed with paraffin, which creates a harder candle.)

Paraffin. Generally the least expensive candle material, paraffin has been around the longest. Paraffin candles tend to burn very quickly, which is why other materials, like vybar, are often added to increase their burn-time. Paraffin can be an allergen for sensitive individuals, so keep that in mind when you shop.

Beeswax. Drip-free and slow-burning, beeswax is often one of the most costly candle materials. It has a honey-like scent that doesn't mix as well with other aromas.

Fact #2: Candle Size and Shape

The most common candle shapes are:

Pillars. These are thick candles (usually at least 2 or 3 inches wide). Often, they're shaped like round columns, but they come in many other shapes, including squares and rectangles.

Tapers. These are the tall candles you'll see in candlesticks on a formal dinner table. Tapers are usually thinner at the top than the bottom. Sizes range from ½-inch to 1-inch in diameter and from 6- to 18-inches tall.

Votives: Shorter candles (usually between 2- and 3-inches tall), that are wider than tapers, but narrower than pillars (between 1 and 2 inches wide).

Tea Lights. These are the short, disc-shaped candles that go in chafing dishes and some other specialty holders.

Container. Any candle that's poured into a vessel made of glass or some other material, and comes as a single item.

Novelty. These are candles in shapes beyond a standard column or square--they may look like they've been carved or sculpted.

Fact #3: Scented or Unscented

Scented candles are a great way to create ambiance: You can find almost any aroma, from pumpkin spice, to vanilla, rose, lime, berry, lavender and cedar. There are even quick scent organic candles that burn fast and scent the air more quickly.

But scented candles can interfere with the taste of your food, so if you prefer the look of candles but don't want the smell, choose unscented options.

Fact #4: Wick Type

The material of the wick makes a difference in how well the candle burns, and in how much care the candle requires. Look for a cotton wick, which burns more evenly and slowly than wire woven types. Cotton wicks also don't require trimming, and they smoke less than wire wicks.

Fact #5: Burning or Flameless

If the safety of candles is a problem for you, try a flame-free option. These give the look and feel of candles without fire or smoke. Flameless candles use low-voltage LED lighting, which flickers and fades, imitating flames. Some come with remote controls or built-in timers that shut the candles off after a specified period. You'll even find battery-operated tea lights. Some flameless candles are made of plastic, while others are made of wax.

Fact #6: Display Method

Some candles, such as free-standing solid pillar varieties and jar types, don't need a holder. Others, like taper candles, require candlesticks, and votive, floating, and luminary candles must burn in some sort of glass or metal container.

Do's and Don'ts of Candle Buying (A Practical Guide)

Let’s be honest: Shopping for soy candles is a fairly thoughtless task. If we do spend more than 3 seconds mulling over whether to buy one candle over another, it’s mainly for scent reasons. But whether it was a taper that dripped all over the table or a pillar that burned so unevenly that you’d think it was placed at a 90 degree angle, we’ve all gotten ripped off in this department. And even if it’s a question of $5, it’s $5 more than we’d like to lose on a purchase.

It doesn’t have to be that way. These tried-and-true simple shopping tips will reliably guide you to a quality candle…at any price point.

- Go for soy. We never thought it made a difference (except in price tag) whether a candle was made of soy versus paraffin—until we found out that paraffin candles can emit toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene. Also, soy wax burns more evenly than paraffin candles. Soy candles have become more affordable over the years, but your options tend to be limited to jarred candles (since 100% soy wax is far softer than paraffin). We think that it’s okay to use a soy-blend, which will still burn cleaner (in every sense of the word) than pure paraffin.

- Want a drip-free candle? Try beeswax. We’ve swapped our standard formal tapers years ago for beeswax ones and haven’t looked back since. Beeswax, on average, burns twice as slowly as paraffin wax. Plus, it doesn’t drip all over the place as the candle burns. The only downside is that it can smell a bit like honey.

- The wick matters. The highest-quality candles use a braided cotton wick, instead of the kind that have a wire woven into the wick. Cotton wicks burn evenly (and slowly), don’t require regular trimming and won’t smoke as much as a wiry wick.

- Don’t fall for old-timey jars. Apothecary-style jars (where the neck is smaller than the rest of the jar) tend to get sooty, since the thinner neck doesn’t allow air to circulate sufficiently around the wick.

- Avoid dark colors. A high pigment content can keep the wick from absorbing the wax, which feeds the flame. This increases the likelihood of drips.

How To Choose The Perfect Soy Candle?

When buying the best American made scented soy candles you should expect:

Clean Burn

This is one of the strong points of any good soy candle over paraffin candles.

It should be burning cleanly for you without soot or smoke and it should not tunnel, for example - Wax & Wick candles leave no wax residue left on the side of our new custom glass. If you really wanted to you can turn our jars into decorative tumblers - the ideas are truly endless.

When our 100% soy candle is nearly finished, you will notice that they do not smoke nor cause soot but blended ones will and you may notice some soot appearing along the top of the glass. Never spend your hard earned money on cheap candles. Companies promise long burn times and great fragrance throw - at the expense of using cheap wax and cheap wicks.

A further sign of a high quality scented soy candle is that the wood wick does not need to be trimmed. With past purchases you may have noticed that some candles develop red glowing bubble or head that eventually drops off into the wax to create a nasty mess in the wax. This happens usually because of an inferior cotton wick. Our 100% FSC-certified wood wicks do not EVER need to be trimmed.

Every Wax & Wick candle will burn down cleanly and completely, will not soot, smoke, nor will it leave soot marks on the glass.

100% Natural & Eco Friendly

The best soy candles are made from 100% natural soy wax without any synthetic or petroleum derived additives. These additives are not necessary and yet many candle companies blend soy wax into a paraffin wax candle. This is called a soy blend. Check the bottom safety label of any candle you're using, if it is commercially available the ingredients should be listed. The companies don't usually share the blend amount but it is safe to assume 90% paraffin to 10% soy.

Wax & Wick uses only 100% soy wax for your candle.

This is for the benefit of being able to claim "natural" or "soy candle" but also to keep the price of the candle cheap. If you see a "soy" candle that is very cheap, chances are that it contains poisonous paraffin wax and not considered as the organic candles.

Healthy Burn

This is the strongest point of a high quality soy candle.

With soy being natural, it does not contain toxins that are carcinogenic!

Paraffin contains toxins such as toluene and benzene, which are known carcinogens. It has been scientifically proven that a candle flame does not burn hot enough to destroy these ingredients before they are passed into the air, which makes paraffin candles air pollutants or harmful to the quality of the air in your home.

Another key element you should expect of Wax & Wick candles is that we only use natural wood wicks, free from metal and cotton. Metal particles are woven into cotton wicks to keep them upright while the candle burns. Zinc and lead are typical examples of these - burning them in any candle can lead to lead or zinc poisoning.

We only use 100% soy wax sourced from Midwestern farmers in the United States with FSC-certified wood wicks sourced directly from the United States.

Strong Perfume

Whenever there is a valid criticism of soy candles then it is the lack of 'fragrance bloom', in other words, many people find that the fragrance from a soy candle is not particularly strong.

The reasons are easily explained: soy wax has a lower melt-point than paraffin and the cooler the molten wax, the less perfume evaporates.

The melt-point of soy wax is around 35-55 degrees celsium whereas paraffin wax's is at 55-70 deg C. This difference does not seem much but it become most significant when you consider that for every 10 degrees celsius you double the amount of perfume which evaporate.

Here is an example: a typical perfumed soy wax candle will have a meltpoint of about 45 deg C and a fragranced paraffin candle will be at about 65 deg C. This is 20 deg C in the difference and it means that the paraffin candle releases 4 x times as much perfume into the room as the soy candle. It is no wonder that the paraffin candle seems stronger!

The first solution to this is to only use strong and highly concentrated perfumes or essential oils in the candle. With essential oils and high quality fragrance oils being expensive, many perfumers dilute them. It then seems like a lot of odorous compounds are being added to the candle when in fact it is mainly diluents. This is what typically happens with budget priced scented candles.

A further solution is to deeply and highly scent the wax. Cheap paraffin candles only fragrance the upper most layer of the candle. When you look at the side of a cheap scented candle and you notice a thin line running around the glass, then there is a high probability that only the top is scented. The best perfumed soy candles are all fragranced from top to bottom contain a large amount of fragrance.

The single most effective solution, and the one we developed here at PAIRFUM, is to raise the melt-point of the soy wax used. We achieve this first by starting with a grade of soy wax which naturally has a high melt-point and then we further increase it by adding other 100% natural waxes that melt only at high temperatures. This lifts the temperature of the molten soy wax and boost the fragrance intensity to levels similar to paraffin candles.

Other companies believe they enhance their soy candle by adding coconut wax. Unfortunately, this is another low temperature wax and we find it merely reduces the cost of the candle rather than improve the burn quality or more importantly increase the fragrance strength.

We never compromise like this on quality. Instead, we use a combination of all three solutions outlined above to ensure PAIRFUM soy candles infuse your home with a beautifully strong perfume.

Longer Burn

Due to the fact that soy wax has a lower meltpoint, it has been found that on average they burn about 30% longer than a comparative paraffin candle.

Eco-Friendly

With soy wax being made from soya beans, it is a natural and sustainable resource that can be used for many generations to come.

Equally, it is a biodegradable wax that can go back into the ground and break-down harmlessly.

Craftsmanship

Most of the best scented soy candles are hand poured.

This does not increase the measurable quality of how the candle burns or smells but it does improve how the candle looks and presents itself. With soy wax being natural, every candle behaves slightly different when it is being made. This in turn, requires hand finishing and hand pouring to ensure that a soy candle is beautifully finished.

Soy candles that are produced by skilled artisans do exude a certain personality, character and finesse that candles which are mass-manufactured on factory production lines and machines cannot match.

These are essentially the same reasons why some iconic British brands like Rolls Royce®, Asprey®, Barbour® and others still advocate 'hand made' for key elements of the products they produce. Hence, all PAIRFUM® candles are still handmade by highly skilled Artisans in our studios here in the UK.

Only The Best Suffices

Rest assured that we distill all of our knowledge, passion and commitment to quality in every one of PAIRFUM's luxuriously fragrant soy candles.

Envelop your family & friends only with the healthy atmosphere of soy candles candles and will infuse your rooms with evocative and beautifully natural couture perfume.

Choosing The Right Fragrance In Soy Candles?

Be creative and set a different fragrance tone in every room of your home.

Our soy waxes are infused with natural and pure perfume oils. When lit, PAIRFUM candles will slowly release their fragrance to permeate your home with a sophisticated fragrance, a warming atmosphere for many pleasurable hours.

Here are general fragrance families that offer some guidance. Enjoy the journey of discovery.

Flowers

Floral fragrances shine with their romantic and feminine character but also their natural beauty.

Generally speaking, floral fragrances fall into one of two categories (but these obviously overlap):

Red Flowers

These are the rich, sensuous and heady fragrances.

The most prominent types are centered around rose, also known as the 'queen of flowers'. But this group also includes violet, peony, orchid, mimosa, camellia, champaca, freesia, hyacinth, lilac and heliotrope.

White Flowers

This fragrance type is personified by jasmine with other members being orange blossom, tuberose, gardenia, honeysuckle, lilac, magnolia, osmanthus, ylang ylang, iris, lily of the valley, narcissus and many other blooms with pale petals.

White flower notes are generally light and fresh with more of an outdoor feeling.

Aromatic & Aquatic

Freshness is the overriding sensation of these fragrances.

The breaking waves of the ocean, the freshness of the wind or a clear blue lagoon. These are the images conjured up by the scents in the aquatic olfactive group. The notes tend to be transparent, fresh, natural, radiant and lasting.

Lavender, rosemary and artemesia are aromatic notes. The lend virility and energy to a fragrance. To reinforce their freshness, aromatic fragrances are often combined with citrus or spicy notes.

Wood & Moss

This olfactive heading summarises scents based on woods such as sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver or cedar. Woods are typically at the base of a fragrance giving it richness and warmth. Today woody notes can be both masculine and very feminine in character, whereas in the past they were predominantly used in men's perfumery.

Woods have many different olfactive profiles:

cedarwood reminds us pencils

sandalwood is milky, powdery and creamy

agarwood or oud has a campherous, musty and woody nature

pine trees are fresh and we all associate Christmas or forests with them

guiacwood can come across a little phenolic or woody, tar-like

pure patchouli smell very different from note we associate with the 'hippies'. It is woody but sweeter, lighter and a little earthy. Patchouli is the leaf of bush.

vetiver (although it is a grass) is a dry, musty and woody scent with facets of chocolate and incense

Mosses are a sub-group, as they grow as lichen on or around tree, such as oakmoss and tree moss. Oakmoss has a rich, earthy and woody aroma whereas tree moss is slightly fresher, reminiscent of pine bark. Mosses lend a dark sensuality and a retro feeling to fragrances.

Mosses are the key ingredient in chypre notes. The term 'chypre' is pure perfumery language and not familiar to many. Chypre is not actually an ingredient but describes an accord that always consists of these three elements:

a woody, leathery or mossy base note

a floral heart, and

a fresh top with hesperidics

Chypre perfumes are both fresh and warm with a lingering richness. Armani's Aramis is a typical example.

Fougère (French for 'fern') is not an ingredient but another accord: lavender, oakmoss and coumarin. It recreates a green, woody, moist / damp and cool forest. Archetypical fougères as masculine fragrances.

Resins & Balms

Some of the most ancient aroma compounds below to this class of ingredients and they form the backbone of many Oriental accords.

Balsams include materials such as vanilla, benzoin, Peru balsam, Tolu balsam but also some waxes and they tend to be soft and warm in nature with many of them also having fixative properties, i.e. they make other ingredients last longer.

Amongst the resins are frankincense, opoponax, myrrh, styrax and elemi. Resins are crystallised sap from the bark of trees. Their odour profile is woodier and has a smokey nature when compared with balsams.

Green & Herbaceous

The sensation of these olfactive notes is one being outdoor: amongst the ferns of a forest, barefoot on grass, meandering through a meadow, fresh harvest time. Their olfactive profile remind us of spring and summer. It is a distinctively natural scent with the aroma grasses, herbs, moss, ferns but also bamboo and green tea.

The term 'green' refers to the scent of snapped leaves and freshly-cut grass.

Fig leaf is unique in its character as being both green and sweet. Tomato leaf has more of herbal leaf tone and violet leaf is reminiscent of fresh cut cucumber. Tea leaves are a further sub-category with their distinct aroma: green, red, white, black, Oolong, etc.

Herbs give a fresh, clean and uplifting feeling. A typical accord contains one or more of the following herbs: sage, thyme, bay leaf, mint, anise, tarragon, marjoram, fennel or basil. Basil is unusual in this group due to its spicy profile.

There are other ingredients with an herbaceous odour but which are not herbs: artemisia, calamus, angelica and spikenard.

Citrus

The name describes it perfectly: oranges, lemons, limes and bergamot. Others in this group with a more herbal profile are verbena, petitgrain and lemongrass. Modern citrus variations are pomelo, yuzu and grapefruit.

Citrus oils are also known in perfumery as 'hesperidics' and are a key component of all fresh fragrances with their effervescent and sparkling nature. They lend a sunny and optimistic feeling. Their cleanliness and elegant nature comes to fore in all classic 'eau de colognes'. They are a typical example of a 'top note' in perfumery.

Spicy

These fragrances all share that they literally radiate 'heat' or 'cold':

Hot spices (intense but short burning sensation) are black & pink pepper, cinnamon, clove, ginger, saffron, pimento, tamarind and nutmeg.

Cool spices are coriander, caraway and cardamom. Their sensation is longer-lasting but cooling rather than hot.

It is easy to replicate these experiences when tasting them neat.

Fruity

Oh, the wonderfully sweet, fresh and juicy fruit notes are enticing to anybody.

Think of strawberries, peaches, pears, blackcurrant, figs, mango, papaya, plum. The list is literally endlessly appetising.

These notes are wonderful in the kitchen and irresistible to the younger generation, particularly in candles.

Fruity notes beyond citrus (which form a class of its own) have become so popular in recent years that they deserve a category of their own.

Fruits especially have become very popular in combination with floral notes and driven the floral fruity trend.

Oriental & Gourmand

Oriental spices, woods and vanilla create rich, intense but sophisticated fragrances. These fragrances share an certain oriental magic and 'warmth' meets 'sensuality'!

Gourmand notes are reminiscent of foody smells and offer a mouth-watering sensation with their delectable aromas of vanilla, coffee, syrup, dried fruits, coconut, cream, chocolate, crème brulée, cupcakes, nougat, macaroons (the list is endless). They are relatively recent group started by Thierry Mugler's fragrance Angel in 1992. Through their nature these tend to be very playful aromas, show new facettes of perfumery and tend to be genderless. Gourmand notes have been particulary popular in scented candles and home fragrance in general.

Musk, Amber & Animal Notes

Since Neolithic times, Amber (a fossilised tree resin) has been much loved for its colour, beauty and scent, which is warm, sweet and very deep.

"Animal" notes refer to scents that remind us of animals. Perfumers use animal notes to add depth and warm to a fragrance. Historically, they originated from ambergris (wales), deer musk, civet cats, hyrax and castoreum, but have since been completed replaced with synthetic alternatives.

Angelica and Ambrette Seeds, two plants, also produce a scent which is reminiscent of musk.

Fragrance Journey

Scented soy candles are ideal for creating a multi-sensorial experience within your home to the delight visitors and friends. With their clean burn they are perfectly suited for a pure perfume experience.

Why not create a fragrance journey that evolves from room to room or season to season?

Fragrance is magical and has the ability to transform your home into a haven of boutique luxury!

Fragrance And Mood?

With fragrance we have the power to time travel! We have all noticed how certain scents trigger memories and allow us to go back in time to specific moments of our lives. It is surprising how scents trigger strong emotions and feelings of happiness, coziness, relaxation or a even a sense of calm.

This is commonly known as Aromachology. It is an amalgamation of the words 'aroma' and 'psychology'.

Any one of us can use it in our homes to create and improve the atmosphere. Here are some suggestions for you to try and enjoy.

Calming / Comforting

Herbal or aromatic notes such as lavender, sage or tea have the power to create a calming and relaxing emotion.

Vanilla, heliotrope and sandalwood are giving a warm and comforting sensation.

All of these are ideal for some wonderful restorative 'me time' after coming home from work.

Relaxing

Scents built around ingredients such bergamot, camomile but also white floral notes (ylang ylang, jasmin) can have a profound effect on our sense of wellbeing. They can instantly make us feel more relaxed through being soothing.

Use these before going to bed for a restful night's sleep.

Energising / Invigorating

Citrus notes are ideal to kick-start the day or when a little pick-me-up is needed.

Try fragrances with strong nuances of lemon, orange, lime and grapefruit.

Another secret is mint! It is excellent for re-energising and giving an extra boost to your concentration. A real wake-me-up!

Happiness

Fruit notes radiate happiness and sunshine. They are excellent for lifting the mood of your home.

Romantic / Sensuality

Fragrances with rose and tuberose but equally ones with oriental aromas (chocolate, amber and some soft spices) are perfect at creating a romantic setting ideal for a candle-light dinner.

The Science Of Aromachology

It is a relatively new science that was started by the Fragrance Foundation but has a solid basis in neurobiology.

An olfactory stimulus travels directly to the limbic system of the brain. This is where 'memory', our basic instincts (for example: hunger, thirst, sexual drives, survival) and our sense of smell are located.

These relatively primitive parts of our brain have subconsciously a very strong influence on our behaviour and can directly affect our emotions: relaxation, happiness, sensuality, energy, comfort.

Aromachology takes a holistic approach to the sensorial experience of fragrance and demonstrates that we react differently a fragrance depending on our personal memories, our geographical location or culture, the seasons of the year, the time of the day and many other factors.

In many ways, Aromachology is an evolution of Aromatherapy which has a much more simplistic approach.

Fragrance And Rooms?

Some fragrances are better suited than others to certain rooms of your home.

Here are a few suggestions.

Livingroom / Dining room

We recommend comforting fragrances with strong nuances of red flowers but also warming woods or vanilla.

Floriental perfumes are ideally suited.

Kitchen

The kitchen is made for green and herbal notes but also spices and citruses.

Nothing should clash with aroma of your cooking.

Bedroom

While a kids bedroom might prefer fruity fragrances an elegant master bedroom suite lends itself to white flower or lavender notes.

Irrespectively, it should be the domain of your calming and relaxing fragrances.

Bathroom

Aquatic (marine) or aromatic notes are perfectly suited here.

Having said this, complex and sophisticated citrus note can be very energising in the morning.

Hallway

This is the first room your family and friends enter. It should radiate happiness, sunshine and be welcoming.

We believe sophisticated fruity notes will send this signal to all entering your abode.

Orangerie / Conservatory

You may already grow lemon or fig trees here and a similar fragrance would be most suitable in these circumstances.

Otherwise orange blossom, honeysuckle and generally white floral notes lend themselves ideally to this room.

You Are Invited

Enhance the sense of wellbeing throughout your home and envelop every room of your realm with a beautifully natural couture perfume.

Small-Batch Advantage Over Big Candle Manufacturers

Wax & Wick Doesn't Cut Corners

Our name implies simplicity, but in reality making candles with 100% soy wax isn't as simple as pouring wax into a jar and calling it a candle. We have spent countless hours testing different scent mixing techniques and fragrance load percentages. To achieve our tremendous hot and cold throws, we load the 100% soy wax with phthalate free fragrance oil - just enough to work with the wax instead of against it. Some fly-by-night brands guess their ratios. We've made it a science.

We have tested multiple different iterations to reach our perfect mixture. Big candle manufacturers use harmful paraffin wax that is over-scented and haphazardly mixed to keep costs low.

Ordering From Wax & Wick Supports Several American Small Businesses

Our glass, safety stickers, labels, soy wax, fragrance, wicks, and boxes all come from different American small businesses. We couldn't keep our candles affordable without sourcing our raw materials from companies that thrive on our repeat orders. And we couldn't do what we do without our customers demanding the best candle for their hard earned money.

Instead of supporting cheap imported goods, why not keep America in business?

Wax & Wick Was Started By Real People Searching For A Solution

We are candle lovers. Finding the perfect candle was an impossibility. Something that was safe to burn in a home filled with animals and children, burned for 50+ hours, and had a wood wick to complement a real scent didn't exist. We took our time sourcing materials to craft something that anyone can enjoy. Would you burn a tire in your home to relax after a long day of work? Don't be fooled by the big guys cheap prices - they use toxic paraffin wax to deliver their scents.

We Care About Our Customers and Our Product

Our candles are poured in small batches allowing us to control the quality of the product. We look at every candle and avoid sending candles with any flaws. You're truly getting the highest quality product shipped directly to your door. Removing the middle man of a brick and mortar operation allows us to keep costs low and customer satisfaction high.

10 Reasons Every Guy Should Buy Candles

[Candles aren't just for women, in fact, they may help you keep your woman around.]

Burn our candles. You don't even have to leave your house to buy them. They show up to your door, discreetly. Best Man Candles on the Market hands down!

1. You Don't Do Laundry Often Enough

Women can smell your dirty laundry that you've left out for the last week. You can't smell those socks you wore for 24 hours laying on the floor because you're used to the smell. Turn your bedroom into a relaxing retreat with our Black Amber scented candle.

2. Your Job is Stressful

Maybe you sit behind a computer screen for nine hours or swing a hammer for eight. Our scents clear your mind. They're made from the best sourced fragrances mixed with 100% soy wax. Leave the work at work and relax at home. Check out Whiskey to calm your atmosphere.

3. Fire is Peaceful

Fire is mesmerizing, it taps into so many senses. A fire is unique and watching the flames dance is peaceful. The sound of the crackling wood wick is soothing to the ears. The distinct aroma of our candles is comforting. Get lost in thought with our Candle Collection!

4. Spraying Air Freshener (Chemicals) in Your House is Not Healthy

And they'll destroy your television. YOUR TV. Yes, those chemicals are safe for (almost) everything in your house, except the most import things. You and your TV. The bottle tells you not to consume the spray, before we scent our wax you could eat it (But please don't). The screen on your TV is extremely sensitive and those spray-able fragrance oils will permanently damage your LED 3D 4K 1080p 5K 70" mammoth TV for which you spent a lot of money.

5. It's Good for the Brain

A good candle scent can do wonders for the mind. Try our Blue Pine scent to find your Chi!

6. Sometimes Smoking a Cigar Indoors Feels Good

Why not? You pay the rent/mortgage! If you choose to indulge and it's too cold outside don't let the smell get you down. Smoke a fresh cigar and clear the air with one of our woodsy scents to complement.

7. Cheap Candles Don't do the Job

Seriously, those floral smelling, run-of-the-mill candles burn quickly and leave behind quite a bit of wax on the jars. Our candles burn at a temperature that will not only leave the jar free of wax but will also throw scent throughout a large room.

8. Candles Make it Appear as Though You Can Decorate

Our candles look great in any setting. Clean lines, nice glass, and a masculine presence could fool just about anyone into thinking you've got your life together. Fool them with our Fireside scent!

9. You Love Your Pets

And your dog loves to roll around in dirt and then track that dirt all over your couch. Clean the couch and light a Cedar + Vanilla candle to clear the air. Make sure you light one near the litter box too!

10. You Love Your Mother

Can't invite mom inside your fancy new apartment without a little accoutrement. Show her she raised a Man and not some kind of primate with our Oakmoss wood-wicked candle, available now.

A combination of a standard wood wick and crackling wood wick creates the "wick" part of our candle. Sourced from FSC-certified mills. Organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly, our wicks are sourced from the creator. Most companies use a single crackling wick which can burn the wax unevenly and be very loud. Our combination is quieter and burns consistently.

Wood wicks don't ever need to be trimmed, we cut the wick to the proper size before we ship your candle. When extinguishing our wood wick you will notice very little smoke emanating from the wick. Traditional cotton wicks require trimming after each use to reduce the carbon built up at the end of the wick. Besides the carbon build up, cotton wicks are dangerous if not properly trimmed.

Wax and Wick isn't a traditional candle company. Our 100% soy wax wood wick candles are the perfect addition to the rooms of your house.

You've finally decided to upgrade your lifestyle by buying one of our candles. Great. You're definitely asking yourself, "what does this handcrafted candle smell like if it looks this amazing?"

Great question.

Our candles start in a liquid form. We use 100% soy wax paired with hand-picked fragrance oils. As the oil and wax spend time at 180 degrees they begin to combine. The melted wax accepts the fragrance oil and creates the body of our candle. Not too powerful and certainly not weak. Our candle scents can easily fill a large space without overpowering your senses.

Think about the way you want your house to smell. If you're looking to add some higher energy to the space, use our Espresso candle.
Searching for a Men's Candle

I searched through pages of results looking for an affordable men's candle, something that didn't smell like linen or berries, something that smelled like expensive wood or tobacco. I found some ultra-expensive candles ($40-$100 for less than 10oz. of wax) sure they were made from 100% soy and had manly fragrance but they didn't satisfy my desire for something a little more affordable.

I know good doesn't come cheap and cheap isn't good but really, $100 for a candle that would only burn for 40 hours? At the time it seemed ridiculous (still does!) - I then found some cheap men's candles. I won't name any names but they were not attractive scents. Beer, bacon, fart, grass, etc. Candles made for folks that might not get any benefit from a well executed product. Fine. I'll make my own.

I contacted my friend Joe and we decided to create the products we wanted to carry. 100% soy candles sourced from American companies, simple glass jars from America, and wood wicks - again, from the good old U.S.A.

We know you'll like our products, they burn clean and crackle just enough to satisfy - best of all they come in attractive jars and don't cost nearly as much as our competitors. Try a 3oz. candle if you don't want to take the leap. Use the 6oz. travel tin for your car (don't light it). And burn our 10oz. candle if you intend to fill a room with a great scent.

We also offer different candle strengths - Mild, Medium, and Strong. For those with sensitive noses go with the Mild - the amount of fragrance used is just enough to fill the area around the candle. The Medium strength would fill a bedroom with the scent. The Strong pours are good for helping make the space you live in memorable for yourself and the people you invite into your dwelling.

Achieving Good Hot Throw

Our painstaking research and development helped to create our perfect mixture of 100% soy wax and phthalate free fragrance oil. We ditched the dyes in favor of pure white soy wax. Sure, it will show some imperfection but a handcrafted good should be somewhat imperfect. This isn't to say that we have failed to create something that is perfect to us - just shows that even though we have spent countless hours concocting something incredible we are still human at the end of the day.

A lot of small candle companies use the same tired designs and low grade fragrance oils. The results are a cheap to manufacture candle with a low customer satisfaction rating. The candle just doesn't hold up against the big names (even if the big brand is using paraffin wax). We source the best raw ingredients to guarantee that when you burn our candle you'll be enjoying something safe and powerful. Our candles can easily fill 600+ square feet - small rooms/offices can enjoy the benefit of our fragrances without being lit.

Light the FSC-certified wood wick from one end to the other, letting the flame do the work. Once the candle is lit the wax will begin pooling around the wick and you'll notice the fragrance begin to fill the air. The hot wax should be clear and wet without sticking to the inside of the jar. A lot of candles do not burn correctly and leave residue and soot on the inside of the jar. These candles are soy wax blends (90% paraffin/10% soy) and not 100% soy wax.

Cheap candles are cheap due to being imported from foreign countries and sourced from manufacturers with no desire to be sustainable. Quick dollars in their eyes. We have spent the money and time to create something that we love and we love to share it with our customers. We are very happy to see smiling faces burning our candles and enjoy hearing about how our candles can easily fill a room better than any other candle on the market.

Traditional paraffin candles are manufactured to be used and not enjoyed. They create no emotions and can unearth some hidden allergies you may not have known about previously. Sadly, paraffin candles are the accepted norm due to their availability, cheapness, and ease to manufacture. Paraffin wax accepts ultra high fragrance loads to achieve good hot throw. No effort involved. 100% soy wax requires a careful marriage to fragrance load percentage. Too high and the soy wax becomes oily and unappealing, too low and every candle will smell like artificial leather. We have found the exact measurement for perfect hot throw. Even our cold throw can compete with any big name candle company.

Phthalate esters are mostly used to plasticize common household materials for commercial use. Some candle makers and fragrance makers use phthalates to weaken raw materials when making oils. Although it is not certain that phthalates can cause ill effects - but we feel more comfortable working with fragrance oils that are safe for human consumption. We try to find phthalate free fragrance oils for our 100% soy wax candles.

Any candle we make that has phthalates in the fragrance will not state "phthalate free" in the description. We also use only the best 100% soy wax (no additives, mixtures, or dyes) and FSC-certified wood wicks.

To find out more about our reason for choosing 100% soy wax please read this. Additionally, if you're interested in why we chose FSC-certified wood wicks, read this.

The CDC states that phthalates are widespread throughout the United States, our goal is to remove some of the danger from household items by creating something consumable and safe for all to use. There are laws against phthalates bring used in some items sold in the United States but none stopping candlemakers from using phthalate synthesized fragrances in their candles. We refrain from using them to protect our customers and the environment - a step further than some manufacturers are willing to go.

Men, women, and children can all be adversely affected by phthalate use. Look at the ingredients and methods of manufacturing for all of the products you consume!
