Calculating Risk: Nobel Laureate Alan Heeger on Innovation and Getting it Right

“One does not stop learning when you finish your PhD, you’re only beginning.”

2000 was a pretty good year for Professor Alan Heeger. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his efforts in the discovery and development of conductive polymers and his first business venture, UNIAX was acquired by DuPont.

Nearly a decade later, he has yet to lose his nerve to innovate. Despite his remarkable success in both the academic and entrepreneurial sphere, he is still on the frontline of discovery and research, here at UC Santa Barbara.

He talks about the inherent risks innovation and starting your own business, the importance of being bold and the difficulty in getting it right.

On Exploring the Great Unknown

In the end, that’s part of the thrill of sciences. Living with that risk and dealing with it. I was fortunate because I lived with that kind of risk for 24 years and created a whole new field of science: semiconducting and metallic polymers. I’ve enjoyed that and having been wonderfully honored for those accomplishments.

On Risky Endeavors

I saw play a year or two ago called “Master class” about the great soprano Maria Callas. She was past her prime in this play, and teaching a master class. One of the young women in the class asked her why did she quit. Did she lose her voice? And she said. “I never lost my voice, I lost my nerve.” I’ve never forgotten this line because it’s really important that you do not lose your nerve. You’ve got to go forward and be willing to take risks.

On the Nobel Prize

In 1982, 27 years ago, and I’ve never looked back. It has been wonderful here and I’m still, of course, doing science full-time. I started out as a physicist. Then I became a chemist. In 2000 they awarded me the Nobel Prize in chemistry, and now I think of myself as a scientist.

On Business

It wasn’t that I decided I wanted to do something new, but I saw an opportunity that was associated with my research. I wanted to carry that over and try to make it into something that would be useful for technology, and useful for people.

On Collaboration

So making that clear, making those connections…. rarely can a startup company do this by itself. There are, of course, successful examples like Google, etc. But typically, one needs partners, money and financial help through individuals, a venture capitalist group, or strategic partners, but you also need to get them involved in the technology, and basically sell it as a concept.

On UC Santa Barbara

That happened in the case of UC Santa Barbara. Really, on a very short time scale, to go from what was euphemistically called use the “sunny beach” to a really world-class institution that we now enjoy has been fantastic.

Just read on the Huffington Post that President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

Surprised? Yes.
Proud? Yes.
Too early? Never.
Political? Perhaps.

With his effort to reduce global nuclear arms development, negotiate solution between Palestanians/Israelies, and bring larger attention to climate change, the Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize of 2009 to President Obama.

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” said Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee.

He certainly has captured my attention and gave me hope for a better future.

Yes, he is still early in his presidency to see what fruits his efforts will bear.

As the former Laureate stated, this may be a way to encourage him to do more for global peace.

With the failed bidding of the Olympics, many of his critics (including SNL) say he is biting more than he can handle and accomplish none what he has promised.

That may be true. But give the guy a break, it’s only months into his presidency.

But, still you made many of us believe that ‘Yes, we can’.

Global peace is possible. One small action at a time.

How many of you work with people? How many of you depend on your people to produce results? How many of you would like to create an environment where people are self-motivated, creative, and results oriented?

When people think about motivation, they think of the most obvious model, the carrot and stick model. This is especially true in north America where capitalism rules. True, people are extrinsically motivated. True, people are tuned into wii.fm–’what’s in it for me’–all the time. And true, business have been using it as a motivation mechanism for hundreds of years.

Dan Pink, author of “A Whole New Mind”, gave an eyeopening presentation on the paradox of incentives and results. he asserts that carrot and stick model works in a narrow scope of problems. and it doesn’t work in most others. especially when the problems requires creativity. in fact not only that it doesn’t work, incentives actually make people perform worse. the higher the incentive and worse people perform.

What? That goes against the idea of capitalism. He had my attention.

He further explains that extrinsic motivators–the carrots and sticks–are good for mechanical problems. Problems that have a defined set of rules, narrow focus, and clear roadmap. An example is streamlining a car manufacturing process in an assembly line.

however if the problem is undefined and qualitative–‘big hairy audacious goal’ as Jim Collins would call it–and the solution is on the periphery, the extrinsically based model would crumble. sweeter carrot and sharper stick would just fail. he says, appealing to the intrinsic motivators–autonomy, mastery, and purpose–would accelerate creativity and thinking. an example is Kennedy’s ‘we choose to go to the moon’ challenge.

A la the world is flat and a whole new mind, if you look around, the traditional white collar jobs are being commoditized. the mechanical, tedious type work is being transferred abroad more and more. The high paying jobs today require you to be more creative, more right brain, and more conceptual.

What kind of candle problem does your company have? Are you motivating your people with extrinsically based strategy or intrinsically based strategy?

If you have the kind of problems that require your people to think outside of the box, Dan pink offers 3 winning characteristics:

Autonomy: the urge to direct our own lives,

Mastery: the desire to do something better and better that matters

Purpose: the yearning to do what we do and in service for something larger than ourselves

Examples he gave were:

Google’s 20% time and how this method birthed the likes of Gmail, Google News, Orkut.

Wikipedia and how it beat Microsoft’s Encarta.

ROWE (Results Only Work Environment) where workers are held to account for results. Results only. How they deliver the results is irrelevant. Meetings are optional. The consequence is that productivity goes up and turnover goes down.

In my circle I also have 3 successful examples:

Opportunity Green(www.OpportunityGreen.com): Southern California’s premiere sustainability business conference and community. I was fortunate to be one of the people who started it. And in 3 years Mike Flynn and Karen Solomon has grown it from obscurity to the #1 brand in bringing TOP business people and corporations together for sustainable causes. Get this, almost all the people involved are volunteers.

Homeless but Not Toothless(http://www.homelessnottoothless.org/): Dr. Jay Grossman’s nonprofit organization that brings dignity back to homeless people through charitable dental work and he is now broadening the mission to foster care children. With the help of Hollywood celebrities and power brokers, HBNT will help thousands more.

Internet Advertising and Marketing: Most of the companies are virtual. These self-selected and self-motivated people and organizations the driving force to innovative business models that inspired traditional business to be more open and transparent. See Chris Anderson’s book “FREE” for more examples.

What will you do now? Will you be lazy and use the traditional carrot and stick extrinsic motivators or adapt to the scientifically proven intrinsic motivators? How are you going to motivate your people for your “candle problem”? How will you motivate your family, friends, coworkers, community organizations?

Watch the video and let me know what you will do

One afternoon amongst 500 other people, I spotted an older more distinguished gentleman. You know the kind of person who you can spot amongst 1000 people. I introduced myself and turned out he is the executive producer of Pretty Woman, one of the most memorable film in my youth.

What do you think I did? Given that I am a student of successful people, I seized the opportunity and had a brief interview with Gary.

————————–

Here is the synopsis of the interview:

How many times have you been asked “What do you do?” at any kind of social gathering.

How many times have you answered the question and the other person then moved on to the next person? Leaving you feeling unimportant. Snubbed. Even a little hurt.

By answering the question directly, we put a ‘label’ on ourselves. And based on the the listener’s perception you are either boring or interesting.

Sure you can say: how rude! But the fact is that we have so many people to meet and so much information coming our way. There is no way for us to care about everything and everyone at everywhere. We have evolved to have phenomenal multitasking ability as well as filtering ability.

You are either boring or interesting. Bang. Done.

When Gary Goldstein asked me what is it that I do, my answer was ‘blogger’ and I am interested in interviewing him.

If he wasn’t curious and had a blogger interviewed him already. That would have leave no room for more development. That would have been the end of conversation.

Gary asks me to consider answering the question with a question. “What if thousands of people get to listen in on this conversation?”

By demonstrating value in the form of a question, that would have been intriguing to you, wouldn’t it? From that intrigue, we can then develop a relationship.

If you think this only applies to conference networking events, think again.

Recall how you or someone you know intimately, how do you initiate conversations in the dating scene?

Inevitably they start out with the question “what do you do?” and launch into a monologue of how great their latest project may be.

All features and no benefit.

Yawn. Boring.

You start to look around for more interesting targets.

As the talker, you want to have something that demands an unusual response. But I digress.

Here are some of the other points he touches on:

He shares how he is changing the business model of Hollywood by inverting the model of production and distribution.

He shares what’s possible beyond the realm of Hollywood

He shares how you can develop the ability to overcome hardtimes in Hollywood

How to get the inroad of Hollywood

Inner game: persistence, commitment

Outer game: dream100 and the strategy to reach anyone you want

If you ever get an opportunity to see him speak, see him. His insight and analogy will change how you operate in business relationships.

Even if you don’t listen to the entire interview, here is one thing you can do right now to get results:

Write down your list of dream contacts that will take you to the top. All 100 of them. Reach out to their gatekeepers for advice. Be persistent. Result will come.

“Opportunity never knocks, it sits quietly on the roadside and waits to be found.”

Are you waiting for opportunity to knock? Or are you going to find it?

Read this if you are interested in hearing what type of people I’d like to meet.

I have been privileged. Because of my previous liaison work and passion to learning, I have had the chance to meet some of the most influential people in the world.

Eric Schmidt of Google

Dr. Muhammad Yunus of the Grameen Bank

Michael Milken of the Milken Institute

Al Gore

TEDsters

Award winning actors.

Technology Tycoons

Legendary VCs

Diplomats

Nobel Laureates

All that good stuff. Yes they are very interesting people. Yes they have accomplished a lot in their life time. Yes I get caught up in my exhilaration every time I meet these celebrities.

Don’t mistake my exhilaration to obsession. I don’t really care about the gossips about their every move. But I am appreciative of what value they stand for and the discipline they have to accomplish what they have.

And do I hope their accomplishments rub off on me? Ahh yes!

But, don’t mistake my appreciation to these accomplished people to snobbery.

I believe that it is within the ability of all of us to accomplish similar feats. All talent and IQ aside. It is through shear will and determination to gauge one’s success in life.

If you want something, go for it. How many rags to riches story have you heard? The only person who can stop you is you.

Therefore, I believe that I can learn something from everyone and everything. As a matter of fact a few of my biggest lessons were taught to me during my volunteering days in NYC homeless shelter.

But I digress.

Here is a quote I came across that best describe how I feel about this.

The Invitation
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for,
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow,
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed
from the fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own,
without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own,
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic,
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true.
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself;
if you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul;
if you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy

I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty, every day.
And if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure,
yours and mine,
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
‘yes.’

It doesn’t interest me to know
where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair,
weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you,
from the inside, and when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

By Oriah Mountain Dreamer

If we are truly defined by the company we keep, what kind of company are you keeping in your life? Do an inventory check on the 5 closest friends you have. The average of their characters, drama, conversations, networth, and family is you.

What will you change about the company you keep now?

Read this if you find people fascinating and you want to understand your partners better.

I am student of human behaviors. I find people fascinating. Fascinating but equally perplexed.

For example, men’s obsession with cars and women’s obsession with shoes.

I’d like to be able to predict the general behavior of someone.

So over the years I have studied Myers Brigg and other personality typing methodology and body language analysis. And more recently dabbled in the art of handwriting analysis. I learned that there aren’t any silver bullets that can determine someone’s behavior with absolute certainty. Human beings are complex human beings after all. Like Sigmund Freud said: “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”

This morning I came across a Chinese passage that condenses what I have learned from all the years of watching people in a just few sentences.

to evaluate a man’s character, watch his eyes
to evaluate the worth of a man, watch who he picks as his opponent
to evaluate someone’s potential, watch how he spends time alone
to evaluate someone’s true self, watch people surrounding him
to evaluate someone’s personality, watch how he writes
to evaluate if someone is happy, don’t watch how he smiles, watch the first facial expression when he wakes up in the morning
to evaluate the size of someone’s tolerance, evaluate his reaction during failure and betrayal
to evaluate someone’s courage, watch how he faces death
to evaluate the true relationship between two people, watch how anxious one gets when the other is in danger

As well as I know myself, I tested these statements against myself. Thinking back the moments when I had faced death a few times, the test is accurate. It also gave me an opportunity to evaluate how I have grown over the years. How I acted when I was 5 versus 15 versus 20 and so on.

Take a moment to reflect back how you acted and reacted when you faced the circumstances stated in the quote. Are they accurate?

Hope this helps you gain more clarity in who you are and what you stand for.

Ready this if you are interested in free wi-fi spaces in the Orange County area

With my new focus on internet marketing and publishing, I found myself in a lot of meetings that require everyone to have wi-fi.

Unfortunately, not all wi-fi is free and not all wi-fi locations are created equal. It’s quite frustrating at times to find the perfect meeting spot that works for not only me but everyone I work with. Would you agree with me?

Since I live in the Orange County area, I decided to compile a list of locations suitable for business settings.

Here is my criteria:

1. Free wi-fi. You may be surprised by the lack of access in cities as a whole. Restaurant and coffee shop owners, why wouldn’t you install them at your business place? Free wifi=free traffic and more goods and services.

2. Quietude. Ahh..yes. But not too quiet where business discussions can’t happen without other patrons give you the look.

3. Comfortable seating/standing options. If you haven’t tried working standing up, try it. You’ll be amazed by the amount of focus and energy you will have.

4. Whiteboard. Visual learners and list builders, this is for you. Like my living space, I need space for brainstorming and action items.

After scouring the internet, here is the compilation other people recommend:

Boudin Sourdough Bakery 2803 Main St, Irvine

UCI University Library 4512 Sandburg Way, Irvine, CA 92612, USA

Champps Americana 51 Fortune Drive Suite 500 Irvine, CA 92618

Corner Bakery Cafe 91 Fortune Dr, Irvine, CA 92618, USA

Earth Cafe 5409 University Dr Irvine, CA 92612

Java City 18100 Culver Blvd. Irvine, California 92603

Cha for Tea Cafe 4187 Campus Drive Irvine, CA 92612

Tully’s Coffee 4610 Barranca Pkwy Irvine, CA 92604-4735

Diedrich Coffee

Peet’s Coffee & Tea

Panera Bread

I am going to evaluate these entries based on my criteria and let you know.

Where do you work? Do you settle for uncomfortable, noisy places for your business meetings?

Go write down your criteria.

I’d like to know what criteria you use to find the perfect spot for your productivity.

Social Media’s Importance In Foreign Affairs

It’s no shocker that Iran’s recent elections have made the headlines of every major news network.

However what IS noteworthy is the role social media is playing in the recent turmoil.

Keeping information and content within your region or country has become literally impossible thanks to the world wide web.

The same holds true for social networking via Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Iranian citizens are able to keep the rest of the world updated in a 140 word blurb on their Twitter, a valuable resource that didn’t use to exist.

This new social media turn is refreshing and innovative, no longer will we question what really IS going on in a protesting country or nation.

This is an unforeseen route that social media has taken, we have always looked at Twitter or other social media sites as vehicles for personal or company gain…now we have opened up a completely different door.

Personally, this is a thrilling turn for us aspiring innovators, because this shows that we have more resources to cause change and connect people than previously considered.

I only hope that this sort of connection does not get abused or misused, it would be naive to rule out any sort of cyberwarfare or attacks against outside governments.

Thus, with admiration and caution, I end this blog entry, and log onto my Twitter to view the latest updates.

So you have your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Myspace.

Do you check them all every day?

Are there some sites you end up neglecting?

With the help of social aggregators, you can manage your social life more effectively.

The following aggregators have been designed to do just that:
• Atomkeep: designed to sync all your profile information among multiple social networks.
• Digsby: involves instant messaging, e-mail, and social networks. It integrates social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and LinkedIn with a newsfeed and alerts.
• FriendBinder: Works by adding all your social networks on your FriendBinder profile and all updates appear. You can also update your Twitter and Facebook statuses as well.
• FriendFeed: From Netflix to Twitter, this social network site allows you to receive updates from a large number of sites, and also lets you subscribe to other users’ feeds.
The verdict according to CNET? FriendFeed and FriendBinder are the top two social aggregate picks.

The overall concept is great, manage all your social profiles in one spot, communicate better, etc.

However is it too much? Are social networking aggregators too overwhelming?

Some say yes, others swear by them.

Worst case, manually manage your social profiles, however now there are alternative solutions.
