Make No Mistake: Google Is Taking On The TV Industry by Matt Rosoff

Back in August, Google chairman Eric Schmidt gave a speech to TV executives in Scotland where he explained how TV was evolving, and tried to convince them that it was futile to fight it.

TV was getting more social and more mobile, he said, and content creators should embrace these changes if they want to continue getting paid.

But he denied that Google itself was trying to compete directly with them.

Here’s what he said about Google TV:

When it launched, some in the US feared we aimed to compete with broadcasters or content creators. Actually our intent is the opposite. We seek to support the content industry by providing an open platform for the next generation of TV to evolve, the same way Android is an open platform for the next generation of mobile.

And here’s what he said about getting into the content business:

Some have suggested Google should invest directly in TV content. To argue that misunderstands a key point: Google is a technology company. We provide platforms for people to engage with content and, through automated software, we show ads next to content that owners have chosen to put up. But we have neither the ambition nor the know-how to actually produce content on a large scale….But of course we are helping to fund content.

What a difference a couple months make.

Yesterday, Google made two major announcements that clearly signal its intentions to remake the TV business to its benefit.

First, it unveiled a new version of Google TV, its platform for interactive next-generation TV. The entire point of Google TV 2 is that it presents all content in one interface regardless of source — when you look for comedy shows or movies, for instance, you get your cable shows, Netflix rentals, and (critically) YouTube videos all arranged next to one another.

Google TV spokespeople were pretty explicit about the idea that it thinks TV is changing from a world of a few hundred channels to millions of “channels” available via the Web. And the number-one provider of web video content by far is YouTube.

Then, yesterday evening Google announced that it was launching more than 100 new YouTube channels with exclusive content from big-name celebrities and news organizations.

Google is directly funding this content with more than $100 million in advances, and it’s probably just the beginning. The company has also

In other words, Google is seeding the explosion of video content on its own massively popular online video network, where it sells advertisements and makes money. Then, it’s providing an interface that puts that content on equal footing with the TV shows provided by the traditional TV industry, where Google’s presence is minimal. (Not for lack of trying — Google has a program called Google TV Ads that lets advertisers buy ads on traditional cable networks like CNN. So far, it does not make a material contribution to earnings, whereas YouTube is probably a billion-dollar business.)

This is smart — Google needs new avenues of growth. It’s already managed to move huge amounts of advertising budget from other media (particularly print) online. Video is obviously migrating online as well. So of COURSE Google is going to try and capitalize on this movement.

Yesterday’s announcements were a first big step in that direction.

The traditional TV industry should consider itself warned.

President Obama has ordered two changes to student loan policy that will help millions of Americans who are struggling to pay for their education. Watch this video to find out how these policies will affect you or someone you know.

President Obama just took two serious steps to make life a lot easier for folks with student loans — and there’s a good chance you or someone you know will benefit from these changes very soon.

Here’s how:

– Effective this January, if you’re someone who has different kinds of loans — guaranteed and direct — you’ll be able to roll them both into one direct loan and bring down your interest rate. You’ll only have to write one check a month, and you’ll see a discount. This switch adds no cost to taxpayers across the board.

– You might remember that, as part of last year’s student loan reform, borrowers’ loan payments could be no higher than 10 percent of their disposable income. This is a big deal — but it wasn’t going to help anyone enrolling before 2014. Today, the President announced that he’s speeding up this program so it will affect students next year — helping over 1 million students. This will have huge consequences for people struggling to make their student loan payments.

Sometimes, it can be hard to see how policy changes will actually affect your day-to-day life.

Not the case with this one. These changes will make a real difference in helping millions of Americans get by month to month.

We put together a video explaining how these changes will help Americans. Watch it to learn a little more about what today’s steps would do, and then make sure everyone you know who should hear about it does.

President Obama isn’t waiting on Congress to take action. He’s doing everything in his power, right now, to help bolster our economy and get folks back on their feet.

Netflix is a great service suffering from its success and the squeeze of Content Owners. We need to rally around them to tell them what the customers want yet satisfy the Content Owner Royalty System. Transmedia Brandcasting achieves that. We need only show you how. Reed Good Luck as a customer and fan of the service just expanding to the UK will not stop the slide. They have Love Films and hate worse than we do paying for TV. Yet have mandatory fees/taxes for even having a TV in the House. I know I have lived there for 5 years.

Netflix is quickly becoming the largest video subscription service and its competition is racing to catch up. Netflix’s growth over the last year is a sign that something is happening in the online video streaming business. We asked our Zintro experts to comment on what’s happening in the industry, how it might be changing, and what new thing might be coming our way in online video services.

Jay O’Conner, CEO of World Colours Network Television and an expert in social media brandcasting and monetizing streaming video, says that Netflix and its nearest competitors will face challenges from a new breed of independent producers who are savvy enough to understand transmedia brandcasting and the relationship between social networked consumers and advertisers. Transmedia brandcasting involves optimizing brand narratives through multi-format, multimedia, and multi-device content and web services for mobile, print, packaging, signage, and satellite TV. “The company that can provide the technology, content, and mechanism to create a relationship from the audience to the advertiser to the brand will be the key player,” says O’Connor. “Companies like Netflix need to figure this out before Facebook and Google TV get there. Otherwise, Netflix runs the risk of experiencing the same thing that Blockbuster did.”

To stay competitive Netflix, YouTube’s online service with Sony Pictures, and Amazon’s On-Demand all need be looking at multi-format options. Within five years, online video providers will be gateways for independent producers to release more content, which is what Facebook Social Cinema and GoogleTV are moving toward, O’Connor says.

Christophor Rick, an expert writer specializing in technology, new media and consumer electronics, a social media consultant, and CEO of Gamers Daily News, says that each of the cable operators is starting to work on their own customer-only streaming services; DiSH and DirecTV are going that way too. “It’s going to be a rapidly expanding market,” he says. But there are issues and concerns. “Netflix has 20,000 titles, but a lot of studios are shying away from them, afraid that they will turn into the Apple/iTunes of video and start dictating low prices, undercutting the potential profits of the studios,” says Rick.

However, Rick points out that Netflix has a plan in place that it is beginning to implement: removing the broadcasters and studios from the equation and simply buying content directly. “Netflix has licensed one show (House of Cards), which they could turn around and sell first-air rights to one of the broadcasters if the creators allow it,” he says.

This is how Netflix will survive, by cutting out the middle man and taking their place. Instead of buying rights to stream content from broadcasters, Netflix will buy it from the creators or buy all the rights and shop them around to broadcasters. “While it puts Netflix in direct competition with those they’re trying to license content from, it lets the industry know they’ve got cash to burn on new programs and are in the market to buy,” says Rick. “There is nothing stopping them from making a strategic alliance with a broadcaster, going after new content together, thereby creating a one-two punch of traditional and streaming rights.”

Today finally we dedicate the Memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.    For a moment we would like to examine what we believe Dr. Martin Luther King was about to announce prior to his assassination and perhaps the very reason he was indeed killed.
First Slavery happened and was an injustice to people of African Descent. No one denies that but what was the larger plan to keep us enslaved. And for that matter all Americans find themselves enslaved to 30 Year Mortgages and the perceived American Dream.   One thing we have learned from Dr. King is that we are all in this together. Black, White, Brown and Yellow or otherwise.
Right now however we all need to focus on people of African Descent. In a matter of moment the First African-American President will dedicate the Memorial for the First African American Civil Rights Leader. But if Martin Luther King were alive and could speak from his Memorial what would he say.

Here is another common sense approach for Americans of African Descent. The Civil Rights to Platinum Rights Jobs Movement launched by International Goodwill Ambassador Oscar J. Webb. We call him the Architect, a Booker T. Washington Leader. Mostly Unsung I have had the pleasure to know his heart for Israel and Americans, especially those of African Descent who have gotten the short end of the stick for far too long .

Why should President Obama meet with this leader?

Because he is the only Civil R ights Era Business Leader who understands that to save America we need to Build Africa. As I was studying and reviewing history I remember in 1988 when Jesse Jackson Ran for President and the pride we all feel today that Barack Obama is the President of The United States at the same time the United Nations proclaimed 2011 THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT.

Thank you Ambassador Webb for all you do personally for the people of Israel and America. Now is the time for the emergence of new leadership in media to get your story told. We at WCN would not have known anything about this Resolution had it not been from you.

On Nelson Mandela's Birthday The Africa Heritage Society Launched the CIVIL RIGHTS TO PLATINUM RIGHTS Movement to celebrate UN Resolution 64/169 declaring 2011 THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT. This is a Petition for the the Funding and Support of a Global Concert Series called 2011 SONGS FOR AFRICA. We are asking The United Nations, World Bank, IMF, US Trade Rep Ron Kirk, President Obama, the Congress and US. Corporation to support this effort to create 2011 Hours of Programming related to the achievements of people of African Descent Past, Present and Future. It is estimated there are 40 Million African Americans and as many as 400 Million people of African Descent in the World. It is time for us to create Jobs and Recurring Income by Connecting Africans Globally.

Rev. Joseph Lowery’s Definition of Leadership

Joseph Echols Lowery (born October 6, 1921) is a minister in the United Methodist Church and leader in the American civil rights movement. He later became the third president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and his immediate successor, Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, and participated in most of the major activities of the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the ’60s.

In 2004 Rev. Dr. Lowery was honored at the “International Civil Rights Walk of Fame” at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, located in Atlanta, Georgia. According to the National Park Service, the Walk of Fame was created “to give recognition to those courageous soldiers of justice who sacrificed and struggled to make equality a reality for all.”^[1]

Joseph E. Lowery was born to LeRoy and Dora Lowery on October 6, 1921. He attended middle school in Chicago while staying with relatives, but he returned to Huntsville, Alabama, to complete high school. He next attended the Knoxville College and Alabama A&M College, before finishing his bachelor of arts degree at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. Lowery next entered the Paine Theological Seminary to become a Methodist minister. Rev. Lowery is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Later on, he completed a doctorate of divinity degree at the Chicago Ecumenical Institute.^[2] He married Evelyn Gibson in 1950, a civil rights activist and leader in her own right. She is the sister of the late Rev. Dr. Harry Gibson an activist, and Elder member of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church, Chicago Area.

Dr. and Mrs. Lowery have three daughters: Yvonne Kennedy, Karen Lowery, and Cheryl Lowery-Osborne.

American civil rights career

Lowery was pastor of the Warren Street United Methodist Church, in Mobile, Alabama from 1952 until 1961. His career in the civil rights movement began in the early 1950s in Mobile, Alabama. After Rosa Parks‘ arrest in 1955, Lowery helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott. He headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association, an organization devoted to the desegregation of buses and public places. In 1957, along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lowery founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and subsequently led the organization as its president from 1977 to 1997.

Lowery’s property was seized in 1959 along with that of other civil rights leaders by the State of Alabama as part of the settlement of a libel suit. The Supreme Court of the United States later ordered this court decision to be reversed. At the request of Dr. King, Lowery led the Selma to Montgomery march of 1965. Lowery is a co-founder and former president of the Black Leadership Forum, a consortium of Black advocacy groups. This Forum protested the existence of Apartheid in South Africa from the mid-1970s through the end of the white-minority rule there. Joseph Lowery was among the first five Black men to be arrested outside the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C., during the Free South Africa movement. Lowery served as the pastor of Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta from 1986 through 1992, adding over a thousand members and leaving the church with 10 acres (40,000 m²) of land.

Lowery is now retired from the ministry, but he remains active in the civil rights movement and in Christian activities.

To honor Reverend Lowery, the city government of Atlanta renamed Ashby Street for him. Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard is just west of downtown Atlanta and runs north-south beginning at West Marietta Street near the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology and stretching to White Street in the “West End” neighborhood, running past Atlanta’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Morris Brown College. Perhaps not coincidentally, this street intersects both Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive and the Ralph David Abernathy Expressway.

Reverend Lowery has advocated for LGBT civil rights,^[3] including civil unions, but is more hesitant on same-sex marriage.^[4]

Awards

Reverend Joseph E. Lowery has received several awards. The NAACP gave him an award at its 1997 convention for, “dean of the civil rights movement,” and Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also received the Martin Luther King Jr. Center Peace Award and the National Urban League‘s Whitney M. Young, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Ebony has named him one of the 15 greatest black preachers, describing him as, “the consummate voice of biblical social relevancy, a focused voice, speaking truth to power.” Lowery has also received several honorary doctorates from colleges and universities including, Dillard University, Morehouse College, Alabama State University, University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Emory University. Lowery was Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama on July 30, 2009.^[5] He was also given the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute that year.^[6]

Innovation by Bob Lefsetz

Everybody will say you’re on the wrong path.

You have to decide if you’re an insider or an outsider, an innovator or a follower, a member of the group or a loner.

Everybody wants something new. They just don’t know what it is.

Established industries give people what they want. Up and comers deliver what they could not foresee, what they have no idea they want.

This is the difference between Microsoft and Apple. The initial iPod was met with derision. Who wanted a $400 MP3 player?

Turned out many.

And when capacity increased and prices fell, it turned out just about everybody.

Who wanted a phone where you could surf the Web, never mind utilize free or nearly-free apps to execute unheard of jobs? RIM thought it was on the cutting edge with its BlackBerry, a seamless e-mail machine. It triumphed for a while. Now BlackBerry is left in the dust. It thought e-mail was enough. Turned out it wasn’t.

I’m fascinated by the failure of “X Factor”. And that’s what it is. Simon Cowell said anything less than 20 million viewers would have to be considered such.

Why did “X Factor” fail?

Was it the fact that it debuted in the fall, during reasonable weather, as opposed to the winter when much of the country is homebound?

Was it the stellar competition on other networks?

Or did the public just tire of the format.

Hell, “The Sing Off” failed completely.

If you keep on giving the public what you think it wants, one day it doesn’t.

That doesn’t mean if you do something different the public will eventually find you, but all the legends, all the greats, from the Beatles to Steve Jobs, thought different. So if you want to make a paycheck, think like them. Get a degree, network like hell and find your place on the totem pole and try to keep it. But if you want to last, if you want to change the world, there are no rules, you’ve got to forge your own identity, your own path, your own work.

That’s one of the reasons why music is in the shitter. Everybody’s seen it all. Sure, you can light yourself on fire, sell out to corporations, but what does that have to do with the sound?

And if you endlessly repeat yourself, fewer will care. Isn’t that what happened with Jay-Z and Kanye? People had seen it before, they perceived it as a dash for cash, fewer were interested. But neither of these artists is willing to take a risk, do it different, for fear of the audience abandoning them. And as soon as you’re trying to keep your audience, once you have one eye looking over your shoulder, you’re doomed.

Sure, few can innovate forever. But it’s astounding how a brief spark can flame a career. Whether it be Patti Smith or Van Morrison, who’s so crotchety I doubt he plays nice with himself.

Now Steve Jobs didn’t wake up one day and suddenly invent the Apple I. He was fascinated by electronics and paid his dues, and hooked up with programmer extraordinaire Steve Wozniak.

In other words, if your only desire is to be rich and famous, you’re probably not going to create something of worth. And whatever you create probably won’t be successful unless you employ the work and creativity of others.

Most abstract expressionists knew how to draw, they just weren’t dripping paint on a canvas. Looks simple to the uninitiated, but it’s the training underneath that begat the conception.

So if you want to have an impact, don’t try out for “American Idol”, don’t buddy up to everybody in the business. Follow your muse and create something insanely great. Refine it until it’s so. And then the audience will find you.

That’s not only the story of Steve Jobs and Apple, it’s the story of classic rock. Yes sounded like nothing else. But the band broke through to AM radio and ultimately played arenas. There hasn’t been a track like “Roundabout” before or since on mainstream radio. But Yes, or what they call Yes these days, is still touring on that long ago hit.

The history of the music business is the endless triumph of outsiders. Whether it be the Beatles or Eminem or Simon Cowell. None were rich, none were connected, they just did it different, a way everybody else said they could not.

Simon Cowell spoke the truth on TV! Whew! That was unheard of in a nation that coddles its young and is duplicitous.

But now that he’s about fame and money as opposed to truth, the truth is the acts he promotes are mediocre at best, we’re no longer interested.

The Beatles are legendary because they kept innovating, kept taking risks.

And Neil Young was not afraid to alienate his audience and destroy his fanbase in order to maintain his creative freedom. Neil’s beholden only to himself, that’s the mark of a true artist.

And if I could tell you where we’re going, what music comes next, I’d record it and sell it to you. But I’ve got no idea. I’m gonna be as surprised as you are. But I’m looking out for it. My spies are on the ground. If they find anything great they’ll tell me.

And there’s very little great stuff out there.

But when it hits the Net, it’s gonna spread like wildfire.

Actually, it might lie in plain sight for years. But suddenly the public will catch up to it. This is the classic ten year overnight success.

Don’t try to second-guess what people want. You’re better off working at Procter & Gamble. You might not make millions, but you won’t go hungry. An artist is willing to go hungry, he plays without a safety net, and we give him all our money because he satiates us in a way no one else can. He’s a fully-realized human being. He’s our best self.

If you hear “How did you come up with that shit?” you’re on the right path.

If the establishment says you’re doing it wrong, that you suck, you might just be a winner.

But you’ve got to be willing to lose. Possibly forever.

But the rewards if you win are gargantuan, for not only you, but listeners.

We’re separating the wheat from the chaff. Almost everybody has played basketball, but few make it to the NBA, there’s only one Kobe, one LeBron. We’ve got room for a few great acts. Just a few. You’ve got to be better than everybody else, and unlike in basketball, there are no rules, you make them up as you go along.

You’re the key to the future. Not anybody at a label, Live Nation or television. No one can help you as much as you can help yourself.

The odds are daunting.

But someone’s gonna break through.

To everyone affected by September 11th directly or indirectly we pray for you, your families and loved ones. We pray for the President of the United States and World Leaders everywhere. We pray for Peace and Understanding and the Safety of all God’s People around the world.

Kevin Bowser was a Co-Worker who died preparing for a Training class no doubt as we used to many mornings at Marsh. We pray for his family and ask us all to remember the lives of those who are still suffering from this tragedy. We need healthcare approved for all first responders and those who have lost heath and financial support.

Stephanie Bowser is something of an expert on 9/11.

“I watched everything. I had to get an understanding of what happened,” she recalled, speaking about the day her husband, Kevin Bowser, died. “I’m kind of addicted. I wanted to know what people endured.”

Kevin Bowser was a strict vegetarian, a good athlete and a big Eagles fan. He worked in the technology department for Marsh & McLennan and commuted every day from Philadelphia, where his wife and two children live.

Stephanie Bowser went through difficult times after her husband’s death.

“I was a wreck,” she said.

It was her two young children, now 12 and 15, who forced her out of a deep depression.

“They made me get out of bed – because they were hungry. I had to provide and do for them,” she explained.

She said therapy didn’t improve her mental state.

“I went through therapy for a year,” she said. “You’re supposed to get better, but the 365 days came and went, and I was still crying like it happened yesterday. I knew I had enough – talking about it and reliving that day. So I had to figure it out on my own. My depression, I could see, was affecting my children.”

She also knew her husband would have wanted a good life for the children.

“My husband was about living life, and I found the motivation and strength to live life,” she said. “It would be a dishonor to him not to.”

Stephanie Bowser, who is in a long-term relationship but has not remarried, said she has focused on family since 9/11, giving up her own job.

“I’m a stay-at-home mom. I wanted to focus on raising two good children. To be there for them,” she said. “Because you never know.”

Kevin has a sister, Denise, who lives in Croton-on-Hudson.

Kevin Bowser, 45, was a computer specialist at Marsh & McLennan’s technology division, where he taught brokers how to use sophisticated computer equipment. He was on the 97^th floor of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

The Philadelphia native commuted to work so that he and his wife Stephanie could raise their two children while living close to their families.

Bowser was a graduate of John Bartram High School and of Kutztown State University, where he played football and earned his business degree in 1979.

A star defensive end, Kevin was a diehard Eagles fan and had tried out for the team. He supported the Kingsessing Roadrunners football team at the local recreation center, a program he had participated in during his teen years.

At the time of his death, he and his identical twin brother Kelvin had just finished raising money for a Pee Wee football league team in his community.

Bowser was known as the guy in the neighborhood who was always there for others, such as climbing a ladder to clean gutters for older residents.

To raise funds for the scholarship, Bowser’s lifelong friend, David Sylvester, bicycled 4,000 miles across the U.S., beginning in Astoria, Ore., to the family doorstep in Southwest Philadelphia.

“As far back as I can remember, Kevin spoke of good health and of the benefits of exercise and proper eating habits,” Sylvester recalled. “Now I want to show kids, especially underprivileged kids, that it’s OK to ride a bike, be in shape, respect your body and participate in sports besides basketball and football.”

I read between the lines and President Obama one term or two will be okay financially. And his legacy as the President who got Osama Bin Laden assures him of being a spectacular President. I heard a President pleading and defending Veterans, Small and Medium Sized Businesses, Home Owners who got the short end of the stick in the Mortgage rip off and America’s Families especially our children.

How can any party disagree the need for jobs and the mobilization of infrastructure development for the United States.

Netflix is a great service that I hope finds it way to understand its need to work directly with Independent Producers to distribute Content. Monetized Streaming Video across Netflix just might in the long run save the service. But I have tried to tell the Execs at Hulu the same.

One day customers will have a network that meets their needs of its consumer base. Push Commercials vs Pull Consumers to invite Advertisers into the Transemedia relationship. The dissolution of the Netflix-Starz relationship is a meaningful loss to both companies as well as their customers. Without Starz’s participation as an early partner and its access to popular brand-new movies from Disney and Sony, it’s doubtful that Netflix Watch Instantly would ever have become popular. Additional exposure on Netflix gave Starz and its content more visibility than it ever had competing on cable with HBO and Showtime.

Together they helped create a business and business model that grew and metastasized to the point that both companies felt they were strong enough to take their part of that business elsewhere. They bargained, fought, and bargained again. In the end, they decided their differences were irreconcilable and that it was time to move on.

So what’s next? For its part, Starz will shop its digital rights to one of Netflix’s emerging competitors or maybe try to develop its own brand with a streaming service like HBO has with Go. You’re going to find another way to watch Toy Story 3 on your computer again.

That doesn’t matter. It’s boring. We know how that movie ends. In the big picture, Netflix’s story is much more worth watching.

I want to say that this signals Netflix’s third and toughest phase in its evolution into a streaming video company. (We’ll call mailing DVDs phase zero.)

Foundation: Netflix introduces subscribers to streaming video on their computers, partners with Starz to offset what’s otherwise mostly B-grade basic cable content, finds a small-but-enthusiastic audience among “cord-cutters,” people without cable subscriptions or even TVs. It builds up its infrastructure, goes multi-platform with Silverlight, works out the kinks.

Building: Watch Instantly becomes a phenomenon, growing in subscriber numbers and viewer devotion. Streaming boxes, DVRs, game consoles, tablets and smart TVs add Netflix, making it much easier to bring it to the living room and on the move. The catalog of popular content swells, as does the bandwidth consumed by it. Netflix is triumphant, and begins to talk openly of its future being in digital streaming, not DVDs.

Remaking: Competitors begin to catch up, and content and cable companies strike back. We’re probably less than halfway through this phase. Starz vs Netflix is just part of the hardball that everyone in the television industry is playing with each other in negotiations — producers with networks, networks with operators, telecoms and networks with digital shops like Netflix and Hulu, all over how big a piece they each would like to extract from consumers. So the Starz-Netflix breakup is far from unique; but nevertheless, it may be the piece that will reveal the most about what will happen next.

In the short-term, Netflix loses. The company’s suffering from really bad timing, because the Starz announcement comes right on top of a big pricing shift designed to make DVD mailing a premium product and digital streaming the mainstream one. Even though they’ll have streaming Starz content until the contract expires at the end of February 2012, Netflix’s customers will likely feel like they’re stuck between either giving up access to popular new titles altogether or paying more for DVDs to get less in streaming than they had before.

The breakup also further dissolves the myth of inevitability around digital streaming in general and Netflix in particular. The path looked as if it were continually moving upward, steady and unbroken. Viewers were always going to get more shows, not less; Netflix was always going to add more subscribers, and never lose them; and the digital pie for network and content-making partners was always going to get bigger and bigger, so that everyone would gain and no one would lose.

This was always a fantasy, but for a moment it resembled reality just enough to be worth believing. Now everyone has taken two quick slaps and a glass of cold water in the face. Growth from this point forward is going to be harder for everyone, as they each fight each other both for share and to maintain what they already have.

The cable and content companies have been fighting each other for a lot longer than Netflix has, and have the battle scars to prove it. They were never going to melt away, or walk away from a new pile of money on the table. This fight, not permanent peaceful growth, was always inevitable.

One of the really cool things about having your own blog is that you can choose what you report on and this subject hits right a home. I am a African America, I supported and worked for the Obama Campaign. I have submitted ideas which have thus far gone unanswered in large part. With the exception of Ben Rhoades who attempted to answer my question about The Civil Rights to Platinum Rights Movement and UN Resolution 64/169 proclaiming 2011 as The INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT. Is President Obama in Trouble or is the Nation and the Office of the President going to suffer because of the partisan politics that has poisoned our country. What's your Opinion?

Last month I wrote an Editorial “A VIEW FROM A ROOM OUTSIDE WASHINGTON DC The Global Debt Crisis Fact or Fiction”? Rather than bash the President and his ideas or the ones that actually get to the President for consideration we have decided to create this discussion on the WCN Transmedia Group Blog.

As a African born in America, educated in the NYC School System and the greatest training ground anywhere Wall Street there are a few things I have learned after 53 years on the planet.

First let’s answer Jack Cafferty‘s Question. President Obama is suffering what Maya Angelo told me personally that David Dinkins suffered from, and that is too much consensus gathering. Too many voices and might I ad perhaps the wrong voices in some limited circumstances. Everyone with a brain knows that we are living under the policies of George Bush and The Republican Hard Right Conservative Agenda crafted by Carl Rove, Dick Cheney and was dealt to the American people with a Heavy Hand.

not be all things to all people and the worse decision is indecision.   Many believe that we could have avoided that Debt Ceiling Crisis had the President whipped out the Executive Pen and Sign the powerful Executive Order. To which we pray and say that the Demise of The President may be premature.

The Office of the President is the Highest Office in the Land not The Speakers Office of the House. Also in my studies I have learned that it ain’t over til its over.   So lets examine what needs to happen in the African-American Community to provide the President the support he received in the first election.

First The Free Enterprise System has a broken Leg however it can be reset and repaired with some innovative but common sense approaches to raising new revenue.

And not a Job Exchange Program from one state to another but sustained new business developing creating new jobs to support the growth of The American Dream.

Especially in that one success out of the 9 fully exceeds the losses of the other nine.

But how can you stimulate the Economy yet not spend or print any new money at the same time.   Okay the two Stimulus packages got stuck and never reached the average American. Let me ask the Presidential Contenders, Exactly how will you create jobs without spending any money. Any reasonable person knows and understand that Public Sector Jobs are but one facet to the recovery and all that the Government controls.

And while the Free Enterprise System may have a broken leg it’s not dead. President Obama can more than recover and before you count out the country by denigrating the man and the office, take a serious look at how this is perceived by the world community that see’s little difference between Bernie Madoff and George Bush.

And Since the Sarah Palin’s of the world want to use rhetoric with little or no substance we must take a real hard look at the alternatives. President Obama has gotten Bin Laden, with a small team of incredible solders who if had been let loose would have gotten Bin Laden in the time it took together up the rest of the Bin Laden Family to take them out of the country while the rest of the nation couldn’t fly around the block.

For those of us from NY who experience the loss on 9/11 you must ask yourself this question. who among the Republican Candidates who do you think will have your families interest in mind.

While the President is down on political capital with the Congressional Black Caucus it’s also time for some sound ideas that have broad-based appeal to make it profitable for the Super Rich to duplicate themselves and teach the principles of duplication of the success models they have created for themselves and their personal families.

We have ideas on this blog alone that any person can sign up for FREE and start earning residual income for themselves in a 55 Mile Radius of their homes. We call them Transmedia Revenue Share Communities where the Advertising budgets are leveraged to gain new customers who invite them into their social media world via a click of products seen via Streaming Video using TV Everywhere Convergent Technologies.

Creating a duplicate process to allow the FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM to recover and drive profits into the hands of Americans who would work if they had the opportunity. Today with an Internet Connection an Unemployed person can build a Blog and launch a Media Company with many tools that are absolutely FREE to set up, manage and prosper from.

IS PRESIDENT OBAMA IN TROUBLE? No President Obama will be just fine with or without a Second Term. The Nation is the focus and families being able to make ends meet is all that we really care about. Above all else May God Bless America and The President of the United States. May the spirit of his accomplishments overshadow the distractions which are counterproductive and dangerous for the future of the Office of the Presidency itself. But what do you think? This Early Election Season is a further distraction from undoing the Bush Debacle and finally supporting what may be the Greatest Multi-Tasking President in History. I saw a list of his accomplishments and few Presidents in history have had more decisions to make on a daily basis. And for all of you people of African Descent. The UN Declared 2011 the International Year for People of African Descent. Every Classroom, Church, Political Meeting, Family Reunion should be shouting this milestone to the rooftops. One Man that I have met since my studies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has come up with a plan for people of African Descent. It is the CIVIL RIGHTS TO PLATINUM RIGHTS MOVEMENT and International Goodwill Ambassador Oscar J. Webb is (The Architect). How much trouble is President Obama in?

The following is an understatement: Heading into an election year, President Obama has some “issues”… and they start very close to home.

Top black leaders are criticizing the president. They say he hasn’t focused enough on problems devastating the African-American community – things like poverty, civil rights and jobs.

The unemployment rate among blacks is almost 16%, and for young African-Americans, it’s nearly 40%. Nationally, unemployment is a shade over 9%.

The congressional black caucus recently challenged the president in a series of town halls. Leaders say they don’t know what his jobs plan is for the black community, and “we want him to come out on our side and advocate, not to watch and wait.”

Politico reports the president is reportedly angry that black leaders aren’t giving him credit for achievements like health care reform and protecting medicaid – things that will help minority communities.

But here’s the bottom line: If President Obama wants to win a second term, he needs blacks to come out in record numbers like they did in 2008 – especially in states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

African-Americans will likely vote for Mr. Obama overwhelmingly, but the question remains how high turnout will be.

And it’s not just blacks. The president is also losing support among another key Democratic voting bloc: Women.

A new Gallup poll shows a record low of 41% of women approve of the job Mr. Obama is doing. That’s a 30-point drop since he first took office.

Overall, a recent CNN poll shows that more than 1 in 4 Democrats think the party should nominate someone other than President Obama in 2012. And, 2/3 of all Americans give him a thumbs-down on the economy – the nation’s top issue.

Like I said… saying the president has some “issues” is an understatement.
