Paris-based, Boston-raised Franco-American artist Melissa Weikart recently returned with her new album, Contact, on October 23 via Midnight Special Records. One of the highlights of the record is single “L’amour se construit,” which roughly translates to “love is built” in English.

The track channels a psych-rock and lush dreamy indie rock and pop blend with an old school set of flourishes and production that call to mind Melody’s Echo Chamber and Cate Le Bon. The track has a slow burn exploratory pace that is described as a fall down the rabbit hole, as Weikart considers the way her own emotions are captured and commodified by the confining ways we think about love. 

Further speaking about the track, they add:

“[L’amour se construit] is a plea to not only accept but welcome the inevitable messiness that accompanies our emotions around love. In an increasingly automatised society where our desires are seemingly commodified at every turn, perhaps we can find solace in embracing imperfection and the contradictions that lie at the heart of what it means to be human.”

Another highlight off the record is its opening cut “Crash”, a seductive and soulful opener that sets the stage for the rest of the album beautifully in a way that also could have been released in a different era – even with its modern flourishes and production touches.

Little Oil is Mexico City born now San Francisco Bay Area-based singer-songwriter Victor Mitrani, who has recently shared their new single “What’s Become of Me.” It’s the third single taken from their third full length album, Spells.

There’s a mellow and chill old school folk songwriting quality to the track that has a hushed presence and pace that is delivered in a thoughtful manner. It’s a song born out of “resignation at the situation we find ourselves in” and captures a reflective look within that is finely produced with gorgeous instrumentation that reminds of the work of artists such as Foxygen and Drugdealer.

Further detailing the track he adds:

It’s a song born out of “resignation at the situation we find ourselves in. “We see our past failures catching up with us and influencing the situations we are in today and there’s nothing we can really do about it. We are tired of “breathing fire” As in tired of being in the line of fire but we are also tired of having to put up a tough exterior and being the ones that are “breathing fire” on others. Having the big campfire chorus at least gives it a Greek tragedy feel in that we are in the same boat. Like “oh you were feeling that way too? I thought I was the only one.” And with that, we at least find some relief.

20 years have somehow gone by since Animal Collective released Feels, which really began their upward ascent on the indie music world, proving to find the perfect middle ground between their signature experimental sound, while also being oddly accessible as well – not an easy balance to capture. The sky was clearly the limit from there.

To celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary (which was actually technically last October), the band announced a run of tour dates where they would play the album in full. This included a two-night run at Knockdown Center in Queens, where they also celebrated Sung Tongs back in 2017.

We caught night 1 of the run on October 21st, was great to see Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deakin. together again playing these songs, not missing a single beat. The track sounded as vibrant and alive as they did on record, if not better. The crowds enthusiasm was infectious, which saw the band moving around with an energy that made it clear they were truly enjoying playing these songs again. They ran through the album start to finish, and closed out with an encore full of era rarities “Must Be Treeman”, “Tikwid”, “Fickle Cycle”, with the first two being played for the first time since 2005. Their performance of “Banshee Beat” was transcendent and a standout for one of my favorite live moments of the entire year.

The amazing evening reminded us not only how much of a landmark treasure the album is but how important of a band Animal Collective are and we hope to see them back again soon – either with new music or any other albums they want to celebrate an anniversary of. There are some really good ones on deck!

Battery Operated Orchestra, the long-standing UK-based synth pop duo of Brigitte Rose and Chris Black returned over the summer with their eighth album, Sea Views Soft Rains, released via Blackland.

Kicking off the album is “Alligator” the dazzyling synth pop gem that served as a lead single for the record. The track is about the gravitational pull of toxic love, that has a seductive and colorful yet also quite dark tinted synth pop that has elements of new wave that really gives it an even stronger 80s lean that is hypnotic, alluring, and full of passion.

UK singer-songwriter Celia Grace returned with her new EP, A Way of Life, in September via Wipe Out Music, a release that explores change, acceptance and becoming, tough lessons learned through her recent cancer treatment and recovery. 

Closing the EP is the gorgeous “In the end”, a blend of folk and pop that taps into something touching and beautiful. There is an early 2000s pop quality the blends with bedroom folk crafting something personal, intimate, and vivd that cuts through with an emotional sincerity that ends the EP in a stirring and poignant manner.

Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Steve Stout, who you may know for his work with Lifehouse, has recently returned with new album, i wanna buy a beach house, which was released via his own ALLSWELL RECORDS. It’s his third solo album and the first record fully written and recorded in his new (vintage 1963 tiled) studio Shabby Road. 

One of the highlights of the album is its opening cut and single “waitin on mine”, which was co-written with M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger. The track was inspired by time touring on the road and the feeling like “no matter how far you’ve come in your career or life path there can be those days still of just feeling like, man when am I gonna catch a break?” There’s a classic timeless alt rock spirit to the track which harnesses a folk rock energy and warmth that feels like to could have been released during the 60s.

Concerts are now frequently livestreamed and can be broadcast to multiple people at the same time, and the same is true for the majority of sporting events in Canada and around the world. 

Audiences now have more ways than ever before to take part in live events, including esports tournaments with friends as well as live casinos in Canada featuring live dealers to make the experience more interactive. Live experiences these days mean so much more than simply being there in person, and the trend is continuing to grow. 

New audiences are opening up online

In-person performance attendance still generates billions in revenue in each in Canada, and has even increased in the past 5 years, but many entertainment venues are discovering that they can reach bigger audiences rather than focusing purely on physical seat sales. For example, the National Arts Centre located in Ottawa has created NACO Live, which allows a wide variety of performances to be viewed online in real-time or anytime from YouTube. 

The sound is the same high-quality experience, and there are bonus features not even available to physical attendees, such as multiple camera angles to create an interactive experience. A trip to the theatre no longer needs to involve transport and hotel arrangements, but can be enjoyed in the comfort of the home with food and drink of the customer’s choice. 

What’s more, extra information about performers and performances can be included, bypassing the geographical limits, and opening up their talent to a wider national and international audience.

Streaming is becoming increasingly interactive 

One of the main draws to watching a performance live, such as standup comedy or a theatre show, is the ability to interact with your surroundings rather than being a passive viewer. However, this is now also possible with virtual or digital performances, allowing viewers to interact with the performers as well as other live viewers. This can be something as simple as a YouTube Live where comments are streamed in real time, giving viewers the ability to chat to each other and the livestreamer too, influencing the events in real time. 

Many performances broadcast from theatres and stages now bring interactivity to life with 360 video of the stage, the opportunity for viewers to become a part of the performance, and asking questions in real-time. On other platforms harnessing this potential, such as StageIt, fans in remote locations can request songs from their favorite artists live and even communicate with them directly, something that they’d never get to experience in person.

The changing face of esports and online gaming

The transition to live and interactive experiences extends beyond stage performances, and it’s already popular for many competitive gaming livestreams to be broadcast in real-time. Professionals, players, and fans can all interact in the same environment, which makes the experience even more exciting than being somewhere in person. This creates a sense of community in the esports world, and there is a similar experience to be had with online gaming, including in casinos. 

The same group of friends or colleagues can use an online casino platform to play together at a set time and date, and with the advent of video chat, each can experience the same thrill without the need to travel to a certain location. The track hits with an early 2000s indie rock shine channeling artists like Ted Leo, The Thermals and Japandroids, with a youthful punch and vigor that taps into something raw and honest.
