It's pretty remarkable when you think about it. Sure he gives them goaltending that is good enough to get the win. But since his return, has he stolen a game? Not one that I can think of. Hell he hasn't even been in the 3 stars more than a couple times. But what we have seen from the Canucks is the kind of attention to detail that will be needed down the stretch and into what could be a long playoff run. A few weeks ago, the media were crowning the Flames as NW Champions. Now they sit a mere 3 points ahead, and have struggled with consistency against teams they are supposedly able to destroy.

If you guessed last night's game would be decided by one goal, you wouldn't be alone. That the Canucks and Stars will be decided by one has been a pretty safe bet lately. Unfortunately for Dallas, they simply aren't the same team they were even earlier in the season. Marty Turco has struggled at times, and despite all the hype about his puck handling skills, gave it up a number of times last night. The Canucks got another solid team effort, especially from the third line. Kyle Wellwood's playing like a confident center who can make plays and drive to the net, and if this 3rd line continues to produce, that makes the Canucks look that much scarier heading into the post-season. Ryan Johnson was great last night, winning a ton of huge faceoffs (11-3), and was part of a 4th line that brought energy every time they were on the ice. Ryan Kesler and Mats Sundin had strong games, each with a goal and an assist, and we saw the Canucks go 2 for 2 on the PP, while the Stars were 1 for 6.
Steve Ott certainly got a lot of attention last night, from both the Canucks and TSN. Neither of it was really warranted though. While Ott has played well since his promotion, I hardly think you can put him in the same league as Burrows. I was baffled at the seeming reluctance of the officiating crew to call penalties on him last night, though kudos to him for douchebagging the Canucks into taking retaliation penalties. Also puzzling was how they missed Turco's stick between the legs of Alex Burrows. I have always maintained Turco is not given enough credit for how dirty and cheap he plays, last night was just another example. It really felt good not just to set a team record for 10 straight home wins, but to send a message to a team that has been a real rival over the years. It was also nice to see the Stars out of the top 8.

Up next for the Canucks is a team that has been as hot as they have been lately, and another pest for them, the St. Louis Blues. The Blues sit in 11th, just 2 points back of Nashville and Edmonton for the final playoff spot, and are 6-3-1 in their last 10. We are looking to actually have a podcast pre-game show for this match up tomorrow... so stay tuned.

The Stars head to Calgary tonight, hopefully they have a chip on their shoulder and take it out on the Flames. The Blackhawks will try and rebound from their date with Marty Brodeur and the record books last night as they take on Columbus, another game the Canucks will be watching intently. The Jackets sit 5 points back, and Chicago is playing their game in hand on Vancouver. Another game with playoff implications is in Anaheim, as the Predators look to move ahead of Edmonton into 7th and put another nail in the Ducks coffin.

Gotta say that last few minutes of the Tampa Bay/Toronto game was pretty entertaining for 2 teams that will miss the playoffs. Speaking of teams that will miss the playoffs, imagine what will happen if Montreal doesn't right their ship quickly. Carey Price seems to have lost his ability to come up with clutch saves, and Halak may not be the one who can save them. I am not going to be surprised if the Habs fall right out of the top 8.

The disfunctional relationship: Sean and Gary

Did you catch catch the Averython on today's Game of The Week on NBC? Seriously, this is a relationship that is in need of not just therapy, but perhaps an intervention. A cam trained on Sean Avery throughout the game? Extra coverage on nhl.com to boot. It's like an episode of Dr. Phil just waiting to happen...

Dr. Phil: Now Gary, why don't you start? Tell us how Sean makes you feel?
Gary Bettman: Well, sometimes (blows nose) I get the feeling that the things that are important to Sean aren't what's important to me. He doesn't care about how I feel, or the way it looks to other people when he acts the way he does.
Sean Avery: Yeah, you know what? Maybe if you didn't just sit around all day watching soap operas while I go out and work, maybe I would care...
GB: I love you... The players are happy, there is much slapping of backs and the occasional WOO! heard, when the coach speaks:
Alain Vigneault: Settle down guys, settle down. OK, I don't know how to say this, so I guess the best way is to just come right out and say it. This one doesn't really count.
(stunned silence across the room, followed by comments expressing disbelief)
Ryan Kesler: Coach, that's crazy, we beat 'em fair & square...
AV: Sorry guys. I was just on the CDC, and according to (shuffles through papers) um... Ringmaster 316, they have injuries and are without their top goalie. So it doesn't count.
Alex Burrows: Tabernac!
Mats Sundin: Aw man! You made Hordi cry...

And that concludes this edition of Pessimistic Canucks Fan Theater...

So there you have it Canucks fans. Don't celebrate this win. The Sharks didn't have the vaunted offensive powers of Jeremy Roenick, Mike Greer, Marcel Goc, Torrie Mitchell and Claude Lemieux. Their defense obviously missed the spark it would have gotten from Kent Huskins. And let's face it, Brian Boucher is no Evgeni Nabokov. It's not like he is Curtis McElhinney or something.

Using this logic, you can discount the losses to San Jose previous, because the last 2 came with backup goalies. Do you think they say that in San Jose? Hardly. Yes the Sharks are struggling a bit right now. But correct me if I am wrong, but they did still have Joe Thornton? Jonathan Cheechoo? Devin Setoguchi? Dan Boyle? I think you see what I am getting at here. It's almost as though parity only applies to other teams. With the Canucks, and their detractors (hell, with some of their 'fans' as well) there has to be a qualifier. San Jose is only one of the best teams in the league if they have all their players in the lineup. Garbage.

What I saw last night was another 60 minute game from the Canucks, and a sign that really made me smile: San Jose struggled to keep up with our team speed. They took a number of penalties last night, uncharacteristically bad penalties for them, as they tried to keep the Canucks rushers at bay. While they did have some chances, the Sedin/Sedin/Burrows line was held in check. Fortunately the line of Ryan Kesler, Pavol Demitra and Mats Sundin had a tremendous game. The team was fairly disciplined last night, hell I wouldn't even fault them on giving the PP goal to Thornton, as it was a bad break for Johnson, but they really should have given Blake a goalie interference call on that play. I actually thought there was a lot of contact with Luongo, but he doesn't seem to get the calls other goalies do. Probably has something to do with him not being able to sell it like other goalies (coughKiprusoffcough). And how about new Dad Darcy Hordichuk laying out Jody Shelley? That was priceless. Luongo was very very good last night, but still, we haven't seen one of those A games. It's getting closer for sure. Perhaps this next game Monday against the LA Kings, who have been playing desperate hockey down the stretch will see him truly shine?

So now we have Chicago just 5 points ahead, and the Flames are 8. We are now 4 up on Columbus, and 6 on Edmonton, Dallas and Nashville. No time to take the foot off the pedal, but it is nice to see the one thing we have craved as fans from this team: consistency.

While it may be early to judge them on one loss, you certainly can't judge the Flames on one win either. But I really feel as though the trading deadline acquisitions of Jokinen and Leopold are not going to make a huge impact. There is a dark cloud hanging over Calgary's heads: They are DONE if Kipper goes down. Add in that you would swear the team has ZERO confidence playing in front of him and this could spell trouble for the Flames down the road. Funny though, I though Kipper was the Flames goalie that let in 6. Looks like the kid is catching on.

A number of interesting games last night, was there not? From the huge outburst out of Eric Staal (think he is happy to have Eric Cole back?) to the Red Wings giving up 8 for the second consecutive Saturday, it was a pretty entertaining night of hockey. Apart from the Oilers and Columbus, the Canucks got the help they needed. best part was, they helped themselves as they are now 12 wins in their last 14 games.

GAME DAY: Canucks vs. Sharks

This was actually the script written for the podcast, so hopefully it translates well for this purpose...

After a long break, we are back and just in time for a

game that is a huge test for the Canucks, taking on a

suddenly mortal-looking San Jose Sharks squad tonight

at GM place. What can you say about the Canucks play

since getting out of that horrendous month-long funk

in January, the Canucks have been one of the hottest

teams in the NHL. This is due in large part to the

emergence of Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows, and

seemingly in spite of Roberto Luongo, who has slowly

been getting better. You can't help but feel positive

about their chances heading into the playoffs with the

way the team has played. The trading deadline has

come and passed, and while teams in the West loaded

up, Calgary and Edmonton in particular, the Canucks

and GM Mike Gillis held firm and decided to go in with

the team as is, apart from the pre-deadline waiver

pickup of Ossi Vaananen, who should make his Canucks

debut tonight. The Sharks are floundering lately

(ugh... who writes this stuff?), losing 4 of their

last 5 and 3 in a row. Their offensive production has

dried up, and that coincides with Evgeni Nabokov being

out the last 4 with a lower body injury. Backup Brian

Boucher has lost 3 straight starts, so the Sharks may

decide to start Thomas Greiss, who was called up from

Worchester.

The Sharks have a number of injuries besides Nabokov,

including the recently acquired Kent Huskins, who is

on the IR recovering from foot surgery but he may be

in the lineup tonight, as well as his former Ducks

teammate Travis Moen, both of them came over at the

deadline...

The Canucks have been rolling with two solid lines

lately, Ryan Kesler has really clicked with Mats

Sundin and Pavol Demitra, despite hot & cold

performances from Sundin. And what can you say about

Alex Burrows on the top line with the Sedins. They

have looked dangerous everytime they're on the ice,

and make the Sedins as big a threat as they were when

they were teamed with Anson Carter. The defense has

really solidified, and are producing, especially Kevin

Bieksa, who is playing some of his best hockey lately.

Roberto Luongo has as mentioned been slowly getting

better, but the last couple games he has looked like

he is regaining his form. The Canucks are currently

10 points behind the Flames for 1st in the NW, but

hold 2 games in hand. The Flames got blown out 6-1 by

the Carolina Hurricanes last night in a game that must

worry the Flames and their fans about their ability to

continue should goalie Miika Kiprusoff get injured.

Curtis McElhinney has not won a start in the NHL, and

the Flames defense certainly doesn't look to be

interested in playing in front of him if last night is

any indication. We will take a quick look at the

Moose and Salmon Kings in our farm report coming up in

a bit, but first here is the keys to the game tonight:

the Canucks have won 11 of their last 13, battling

their way back into a playoff spot and winning in a

number of different ways, from dominant performances

against Chicago and Ottawa to come from behind wins

against St.Louis and Phoenix, the Canucks are in full

on battle mode every night right now. I had conceded

that the Canucks had tuned out Coach Alain Vigneault,

but he certainly seems to have the Canucks focused and

playing their best hockey of the season. And after

the last match against the Sharks, where they lost it

in the last minute of the game after leading the whole

way, you know they want to not only send a message to

the Sharks but the rest of the NHL: this team is for

real.
Key 1- 60 minute effort- San Jose has been accused of

not playing complete efforts lately during this losing

streak, but even a small lapse by the Canucks to let

this team have a chance could prove disastrous. An

effort like the one against Minnesota, where they

completely neutralized them throughout the game is

needed, team defense, effective forechecking and

discipline to avoid letting the Sharks get numerous

power play chances will go a long way to ensuring a

Canucks victory
2- Third line must emerge- You can go a long way with

2 effective lines, but teams that are dominant have a

3rd line that can damage you as well. The line of

Bernier, Wellwood and Pyatt must not only be effective

in checking the Sharks dangerous offensive weapons,

but make the most of their chances in the offensive

zone. They got a very timely goal from Bernier in the

last game, they must build on that, and Wellwood

getting back in the groove will make the Canucks a

dangerous threat as we head to the postseason
3- Great save Luongo!- not something we have heard a

lot lately, but he has played well enough to give the

team a chance to win. As they get closer to the

playoffs however they will need him to be able to

steal a win or two, and this could be one of them.

The Canucks have as a team stepped up as Luongo has

continued his on the job rehab from the injury

suffered in November, and all signs point to him

having a break out game. Let's hope it's tonight.

One of the reasons GM Mike Gillis stood pat during the

trading deadline was an unwillingness to depart with

the few prospects we have in the system. We will keep

you updated on how the prospects are doing with the

Farm Report every week:
The Manitoba Moose continue to roll, leading the AHL

with a 42-17-0-5 record, and have won 6 of their last

10. Jason Krog leads the team in scoring with 21

goals and 43 assists, while they continue to get strong

goaltending from Curtis Sanford (5-1-2) and Cory

Schneider (22-5-1), Schneider leads the league with a

1.76 GAA and a .932 save percentage. The Moose are

set up well for a long playoff run, especially if they

have home ice for the duration of their playoff run,

which is good for the Moose, but not so good for the

parent Canucks if they wish to call up players like

Krog, Michel Ouellet or Micheal Grabner for the

playoffs. The Moose are taking on the Providence

Bruins tonight, then have 5 days off before a back to

back with the Hamilton Bulldogs next weekend.

The Victoria Salmon Kings seem to be doing the exact

opposite of the Canucks. While the Canucks were mired

in their losing streak, the SKIngs were turning heads

in the hockey world with a 15 game winning streak.

Once the streak snapped though, they have struggled as

they have been on the road for a long stretch. The

last game of this staggering road trip is tonight in

Idaho against the Steelheads, as they look to build

some momentum for a return home and hopefully a return

to their winning ways. The SKings are now in 3rd in

the West Division, 4 points back of Idaho and 3 behind

Alaska. The are still in a playoff spot, but going

2-7-0-1 in their last 10 has made them vulnerable to

missing the post season if they can't turn it around.

The good thing is they have their next 8 games at

home, before heading down to Stockton and Bakersfield

to wrap up the season in the last week of March.

Wes Goldie is the teams leading scorer, and his 43

goals is 2nd best in the ECHL, and Todd Ford is 15-12

in the nets for the Kings. The next series for the

SKings starts on the 11th as the begin a 4 game

homestand at the SOFMC against Ontario...

So have the Canucks made the right decision by not

bolstering the lineup with a Jay Bouwmeester or

another forward? Time will tell, but the fact that

the team is not just comfortable with the lineup they

have, but also mindful of developing the prospects

they have and not wanting to mortgage the future and

gamble with short term success is a good thing in my

eyes.

After tonight's battle with the Sharks, the Canucks 3

games next week, 2 of them on the road as they make a

trip down to LA to take on the Kings Monday night and

then over to Anaheim on Wednesday. Wednesday's game

is a PPV btw, and the Canucks players are taking their

moms on this trip... they return home on Friday for a

return engagement with the Kings at the Garage...

We really do appreciate all of you who take time to

listen and check out the blog if you'd like to get a

hold of us, you can email us at waachcast@gmail.com

Podcast Issues part 37

So the plan was that we would have a brand new podcast all ready to go for today's game. That was the plan, but as you know the best laid plans of... pfft. Whatever. Long story short, we have run into some hosting issues that have forced us to look at exactly how we produce and host the show. We have a plan in place and will be moving forward with it for a new weekly format, starting next week. We also found out the rss feed no longer works (part of the aforementioned problem) so that will all be addressed as well. Thanks for your patience.

Deadline Day: Canucks stand pat

And this may not be so bad. While the Calgary Flames made a couple high profile moves, the Canucks, winners of 11 of their last 13 decided there wasn't a deal out there that made sense for them. Right up to the noon PST deadline the Canucks were rumored to be in the running for Florida's Jay Bouwmeester, and Toronto's Dominic Moore, but the J-Bo hype didn't pan out, and Moore went to Buffalo.

Is this the right thing for GM Mike Gillis to do? Time will tell, but if you look at the way this team has rebounded from that oh-so-forgettable January, and factor in the Canucks aren't swimming in bluechip prospects down in Manitoba, they most likely didn't see a deal that would upgrade the team without giving up too much. With the temptation there thanks to Calgary's aquistitions, the fact they went with keeping a fairly solid core in tact may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Game Day: CANUCKS @ Montreal

9 days after their last dance, the Canucks return the visit as they wrap up the Eastern swing with a visit to the Bell Center. The big question tonight isn't which Canucks team we will see, but which Canadiens team we will see. The Habs looked good on Saturday, especially Alex Kovalev, who had 3 points after taking a couple days off (read: sent away to get his head together) by GM Bob Gainey. In a season that was mean to glorify the achievements of the Habs, there seems to have been more distractions and embarrassments than anything else. The latest kerfuffle is the news reports linking the Kostitsyn brothers and Roman Hamrlik to a Montreal crime boss. Add in the team's recent slide (4 wins in their last 16) and the crumbling self-esteem of goalie Carey Price and you have a schizophrenic hockey club to battle with tonight. One thing that has helped the Habs is the addition of Mathieu Schneider, who solidifies the blueline and has definitely helped their struggling PP.

So it is a much different Habs squad the Canucks will face tonight. After Saturday's emotional (read: scripted by the writers of the WWE, on loan to Mr. Bettman) shootout win in Mats Sundin's return to Toronto, will the Canucks be able to stay motivated for the chance to go 4 for 4 on this road trip? It's easy to see why they couldn't. Emotional letdown, fatigue, even a slight sense of complacency (though with the exception of the Sharks and Red Wings, no one in the West should be complacent right now) could all be a factor. But when you look at the significance of the game to 2 of the Canucks, you also get the feeling this could be a very special night. Last time the Canucks rolled into Montreal, Roberto Luongo, still in his ER gown after taking a slap shot to the throat in practice the day before shutout the Habs in his hometown. Alex Burrows is also eager to wrap up this Eastern tour in front of family and friends with a big night.

Should the Canucks come out on top tonight, they have only the lowly Tampa Bay Lightning to deal with to wrap up the month of February, and the possibility of going 10-1-0 for the month, which goes a long way in erasing the memory of a truly horrific January.

One thing that has really made a difference with the Canucks lately is their play on the road. They are now 16-10-4 away from GM Place, and at 8-1-1 in their last 10 the hottest team in the NHL. The improved play of Kevin Bieksa, Willie Mitchell and Shane O'Brien has been a key in all this. Bieksa has turned heads of late with huge offensive production, and praise from the likes of Red Fisher and Don Cherry. Now if we can get Edler, Salo and Ohlund back to where they should be, this team looks to be in good shape down the stretch.

The trade deadline is looming, wnd while GM Mike Gillis has said the Canucks don't look to be buyers on deadline day, I wouldn't rule it out. We have cap space, and the addition of a top 6 forward, as well as a mobile defenceman would certainly enhance the Canucks chances of a long playoff run. There is still a tough March schedule and a few key games in April to go, but it looks like Alain Vigneault has righted the ship. The thing that encourages me is that this team still hasn't played their best game, IMO. I am thrilled to see them finding the way to win night after night, but Roberto Luongo has yet to come out and truly dominate a game. Perhaps tonight we will see that.

After many threats to do so, the podcasts will be returning soon, once I have dealt with a nasty chest infection that has me on the IR at work. In the meantime I will be updating things on the site (a few new Canucksblog links to come) like the standings...

The game goes @ 4:30 on Sportsnet tonight, and as always there is liveblogging on Canucks.com in the Fan Zone. I may even pop in if I can snag Laurie's laptop :)

HE Returns... but what is the real problem?

After 7 weeks on the IR with a groin injury (all better now that he "pounded it pretty hard" on the weekend), Roberto Luongo returns to the crease tonight as the Canucks take on the Phoenix Coyotes at GM Place. And not a moment too soon, as the Canucks continue to let games slip away heading into the All Star break. Vancouver fans are obviously relieved to have Luongo back, but the issues facing this team still remain: This team can't find a way to win games right now. Myself, I am beginning to wonder if this team hasn't grown tired of AV's coaching 'techniques'. The Pavol Demitra demotion, and benching of Kyle Wellwood are just recent examples of a coaching staff that appear to be running out of ideas, and have begun rehashing things that didn't work last season. Sure, they've had injuries. Sure, there are players that haven't played to their potential at times. But I think we are reaching the critical point for Alain Vigneault. Either he can find a way to get this team back on track, playing solid, defensive-minded hockey with the kind of offensive outbursts that on paper we should be seeing on a nightly basis, or it is time to make a change before it is too late. I am not saying his job is in jeopardy, but you almost have to wonder why it isn't? It might be easy enough for Canucks detractors to say that this is the way things were supposed to be, this team wasn't going to make the playoffs anyways. But this team has shown at times they were as good as any team in the league, they just haven't been that way in about, oh... 7 weeks. So having Lui back in the lineup will be a huge boost. But Vigneault had better figure out how to get his charges back on the same page or he will find himself out of a job, you can bet that.

Nice to see Kyle Turris will actually play in front of family and friends tonight, unless Gretzky decides to scratch him again. That was probably one of the coldest things I have seen. Nice job, Wayne. Sami Salo is not ready to return to the lineup yet, but is getting closer. Curtis Sanford cleared waivers and has been sent to the Manitoba Moose. He is a good guy, and you know he will make the most of this. The Moose are a better squad now for sure. The Coyotes will be without Viktor Tikhinov and Kurt Sauer. Expect Wellwood to be a scratch tonight, and the Canucks have had lines of Hansen, Sundin and Demitra, as well as Pyatt with the Sedin twins in practice. The Canucks have lost 3 straight, and 5 straight on home ice and will be looking to reverse that against the Coyotes, who sit 2 points behind with a game in hand.

You had to know this was coming...

Curtis Sanford has been placed on waivers by the Canucks this morning. The Canucks have obviously made their choice for backup, and should he clear waivers I suppose he could get sent to Manitoba, or maybe even released outright. I am that pissed. Sorry, but I am just stunned at the lack of effort and heart shown by this team lately. Maybe they will get back to playing the kind of hockey they are capable of when Luongo returns Thursday, but they should have the will and desire to at least not get outworked at home. 5 straight home losses, Edmonton and Minnesota nipping at their heels, and Calgary leaving them in their dust. Who is going to step up and lead by example? Tomorrow's game against the Coyotes is huge for so many reasons...

Now you're all gonna get it...

Luongo's back, and dog help you all... After what seemed to be an eternity, some of those nights filled with the kind of goaltending we thought was long gone from these here parts, Roberto Luongo's groin is ready to umm... rock. And not a moment too soon, either. The Flames have moved 5 points ahead, and the Avalanche are only 4 back. But with our All-Star goalie healthy, and Mats Sundin getting closer to form each game, this could spell a return to the kind of hockey we saw 2 seasons ago at this time, when the Canucks, led by Luongo were the best team from Christmas on. The Canucks will likely start Lu on Thursday against Phoenix, but I certainly wouldn't rule him out to play tomorrow night against the Brodeur-less Devils. Certainly this will help light a fire under these guys who can't be happy with the way the game ended up Saturday night. They played with the best team in the league for 50 minutes, at times much better than the Sharks, but came out empty handed. Having a goalie who can shut the door will certainly help. You can't help but think Curtis Sanford has played his last game for the Canucks, with the way Jason LaBarbera came in here. What we needed from Sanford was for him to play against other teams the way he played against us when he was with St. Louis. We never really got that from him, save for a game or two. Great guy, good in the room, but this team can do better and they showed they can rely on LaBarbera in his appearances thus far, making the Sandman the odd man out. Nice to see Ryan Johnson back as well, as he will certainly make the PK stronger, and having his faceoff ability (as well as ferocious shot blocking) is always a bonus.

Unacceptable.

There's your minimalist game review. The Vancouver Canucks can't be taken seriously until they start showing up against teams like St. Louis (and Atlanta... feel free to add others). They looked like they might squeek out an OT point that they didn't deserve when Mats Sundin got on the scoresheet and effectively ended the game. I am not dumping on the guy, he gets a grace period from me, but holy crap that was dumb penalty. Whatever. Some will wish to sit and dwell on this one (and how Sundin is a failure already, gotta love CDC), but with the Sharks in GM Place tonight, they have more pressing concerns. Overall the Canucks need to step up defensively. While I am not saying Jason LaBarbera is blameless in this one, he certainly had an off night, so much so I would give the start to Sanford tonight. He held the Sharks off the board the last time these teams met after Corey Schneider surrendered 5, and it may inspire LaBarbera to a better outing next time. The Canucks didn't lose any ground to the Oilers as they lost 4-1 to the Sharks, and have likely lost Zack Stortini for the rest of the season. Warning, the video is pretty nasty, in a Joe Theisman kind of way. Stortini's a goof, but you never want to see someone suffer an injury like that. Souray also suffered an upper body injury last night so the Oilers have more adversity to face in the weeks ahead.

Grabovski gives the linesman a shoveski, gets some time offski...

Pardon the pun... As if to but a big handful of candy sprinkles on the steaming turd that has been the Leafs season, Mikhail Grabovski was handed a 3 game suspension for abuse of an official after shoving linesman Scott Cherrey during an altercation with Sergei Kostitsyn in the 3rd period of last night's game against Les Canadiens. This one is intriguing, as the two are former friends who have been at each other twice this season now, and Grabovski insists it isn't over. "I think he is not Belarussian now, he is French because I never fight with Belarussian guys," Grabovski said. "I don't know why he wants to fight with me. If he wants to fight, we'll go in the street and every minute of every day I'll wait for him and we'll fight", said Grabovski. Kostitsyn shed some light on the feud, saying "He talks too much in the Russian papers about me and my brother". As long as he doesn't fight like Alexander Semin, it's all good...

The Canucks are home to the lowly (yeah, I said it...) St. Louis Blues. I find it pretty amazing that Chicago has managed to improve after years of being crappy, yet with all those high draft picks the Blues continue to hoover away at the bottom of the NHL standings. There is a huge buzz on this game obviously, as Mats Sundin makes his debut in front of the hometown crowd. You can expect a playoff-like atmosphere at least as far as the Canucks are concerned. The Blues may as well enjoy it, as this is the closest they will get to the post-season this year. CDC reports LaBarbera should get the start tonight, but I won't be surprised to see Sanford go tonight against his old squad, with LaBarbera getting the nod against the Sharks tomorrow. The Canucks will have Ryan Johnson back in the lineup tonight, and have sent Alexander Bolduc back to Manitoba which means Jannik Hansen is back in the fold, I bet we see him with a lot more energy now that he has been shown he must earn his spot every night. The Blues are led by Brad Boyes, who somehow leads the team in scoring with 34 points while being a -22. Wow. Keith Tkachuk is having a decent season for an old bastard, and rookie Patrik Berglund has 25 points thus far, being one of their few bright spots. The Blues haven't played since Saturday so this long layoff may actually hurt more than help. While the Canucks have struggled against the Blues over the years (Sanford had a big role in that) expect them to steamroll St. Louis tonight as Sundin reminds Vancouver why he is still a dominant player in the NHL at age 38.

Not how I wanted to watch the game

So I had resigned myself to watching the game on tape after the fact, as I was working last night. Both players were enjoying their retirements when Burke called, desperate to make changes with a Toronto team that continues to flounder. It's been quite a journey to get to this spot, but after months of speculation, and emotions from hockey fans around the world Mats Sundin makes his debut tonight as a Vancouver Canuck. It had been thought that the Canucks would unveil him at home Friday against St. Louis, but I like the idea of him getting a game under his belt before playing for the hometown faithful. That's not to say that this isn't an important game, either. A divisional clash against a team nipping at their heels who have bested the Canucks the last time, the Canucks need a win tonight to keep pace with the Flames, who did something last night few can claim: they beat the Sharks. So with the Wild 4 points back, and the Oilers and Avs another 2 behind, a win on the road is crucial.

To expect Mats Sundin to be an influence on tonight's game beyond an inspirational and emotional one leadership-wise may be asking too much. But it seems right for his debut, only one other game, and it's in the eastern time zone, so all eyes will be on Rexall Place tonight, especially those of the Leaf Nation. Sundin and the Canucks will travel to the ACC next month, and many there are prepared to unleash their bitterness and frustration at Sundin when he arrives, much like they did on Bryan McCabe last night when the Florida Panthers rolled into town. In true Leaf fashion, it was much ado about nothing, as the Leafs lost 4-2. While some respect Sundin for his play as a Leaf (one of the greatest of all time, for sure) others treat him as a traitor for not waiving his no-trade clause last season. While my thoughts are generally once you leave the team, you play for the enemy there can be exceptions to the rule based on the player. I wouldn't have booed Trevor Linden on his return to GM Place. Todd Bertuzzi, eh... that's another story. And hate me if you want, but it could come to a coin toss when it comes to Markus Naslund's return to Vancouver. For me I guess it all boils down to heart. Leafs fans may be hurting (missing the playoffs does that to you, we know), but it's fairly naive to think that Sundin allowing himself to be traded would have had any impact on the team save for adding some young player. Do you think they would have been any happier had he gone to Detroit last season and raised the cup over his head? Face it, there's no pleasing Leafs fans.

Jason LaBarbera should get the start tonight, with Curtis Sanford back on the bench from his groin injury backing him up. Apart from the addition of Sundin, no real changes tonight, as all injuries are still status quo, though Ryan Johnson is about a week away, his broken foot healed but the broken finger still not well enough to allow his return. A key for the Canucks tonight is a quick start and a lead after 1. The Oilers have a .900 win % when leading after 1, .917 after 2 periods, but .286 and .071 when trailing the 1st and 2nd. The Canucks need to take advantage of Edmonton's awful PK, which sits 28th. LaBarbera has great stats in his career against Edmonton, winning 4 of 5 with a 1.05 GAA and .966 save percentage. The Oilers have won 2 straight, including the last match against the Canucks where they built a 3-0 lead and hung on to win 3-2. Sundin btw has 64 points in 41 games against the Oilers in his career. Just sayin'...

Former Canuck Jarko Ruutu has officially used up the last drop of his good will after the Chris Simon stomping incident as he is meeting with league officials to discuss why he allegedly bit Buffalo's Andrew Peters last night during a scuffle. To be fair, I don't think anyone deserves a facewash from Peters' stinky mitts. That being said, Ruutu appears to have Peters' thumb clenched between his teeth in the video.
The All Star game is fast approaching, and while many are still angry the league did nothing to curtail the ridiculous vote-rigging by Habs fans (sorry, I don't care how well he has played this season, Mike Komisarek is a nobody), there is more controversy over the league's picks for the reserve lineup. There always seems to be players left out so that each team can have a representative, which makes sense on one hand, but then again, is there really an All Star on the St. Louis Blues this season? So the NHL has named Roberto Luongo as it's Vancouver rep in the game. Forget the fact that Bobby Lu is on the IR, and has been since November, right? I am willing to bet even if he is ready to play, he turns down the invitation. He likely won't play until after the break anyways. That leads us to who should replace him, and more likely who should have been named in the first place. Daniel Sedin is having a hell of a season. He has more goals than many of those named, is in the top 20 in points, and has more than a dozen more points than Dustin Brown, the Kings' representative. So the league needs to replace Luongo with Daniel and all is good, right? But will they? That means some other team's goalie will get named. I think they should add rookie Steve Mason of Columbus, who has been outstanding. They likely won't, so expect Mikka Kiprusoff of Calgary to get the nod.

Our 1st podcast of 2009 will be ready to go Friday as we recap the week for the Canucks and look at back to back games against St. Louis and San Jose Friday and Saturday as Mats gets to know the fans and vice versa.

Canucks send Hansen, Schneider to the Moose

While it's no surprise that Cory Schneider is going back to the Moose, given the way he started the year, it is a shock to see Jannik Hansen headed to Winnipeg. Between time with the Sedins and a line with Kesler and Burrows, Hansen was off to a great start, and looked to be continuing the progress made last season. Somewhere along the line his play really began to drop off though, and he will now have to work his way back to the team. This is good news for Jason Jaffrey, who has done everything right since getting called back up to the team, even fighting to prove he didn't deserve to go back to the Canucks' AHL affiliate. Does this mean a certain #13 makes his debut as a Canuck Wednesday? Stay tuned...

The record's stuck... the record's stuck... the record's stuck...

Another great performance by Jason LaBarbera, another maddening shootout loss because we have guys who can't put the puck in the freakin' net... Dallas didn't really deserve a point in that game last night. Marty "Informer" Turco really saved their asses on a number of occasions, but was still the 2nd best goalie of the night. I feel for LaBarbera, who has played well since coming over to the Canucks, but only has one win to show for it. Things could change as we will know soon if Mats Sundin will be in the lineup Wednesday against Edmonton, but in the meantime the Canucks need to figure out a way to start getting wins in the shootout, or those lost points will come back to haunt them. A good night from the 4th line once again, Darcy Hordichuk is proving to be quite a good pickup for the Nucks, as well as the line of Raymond, Wellwood and Bernier, who looked dangerous all night.

Canada faces off against Sweden for gold in 15 minutes, I am calling it 5-4 for Canada. It's gonna be a hell of a game, and as a Canucks fan you have to love the way Cody Hodgson has played in this tournament. This kid will be a star, I can just feel it.

Sunday update: Nux @ Stars, Last second madness in Ottawa and more...

We will be making a few changes yet again here at WAACH, so bear with us as we implement them. Hope you all had an enjoyable holiday, I know we did here at the WAACHhouse.

Big game for the Canucks tonight as they look to get back on track on Dallas, but let's kick things off with more gushing about that incredible game against the Russians last night. The back and forth nature of that game certainly made for some high drama, as Pat Quinn's troops seemed to let their foot off the Russian team's throat everytime they got the lead. It could be a good sign though, maybe they are saving their best for last? There are still some issues that Quinn and the coaching staff will need to address before tomorrow evening's gold medal final: giveaways, and discipline. Those seemed to be the glaring issues for me in last night's game. Canadian players trying to make cutesy plays instead the smart and safe play (lord knows we on the west coast are experts on this topic...), like PK Subban in particular, were guilty of handing opportunities to the Russians when a simple pass or dump in would have sufficed. Let's not kid ourselves, these young men are under HUGE pressure to win at home, and many will never play in a bigger game than Monday night's contest, but they are there because they are the best players this country has to offer at this level, so they must be prepared to bring their A game. I was quite disappointed to hear booing during this game though. They are still kids, and booing them for not scoring on a power play, or because they couldn't stop a tenacious Russian squad from fighting back is mind-boggling. One of the nasty side-affects of being such a hockey mad nation, I guess...
The Swedes seem to be a very fast skating, skilled and opportunistic team, and Canada will need to throw everything they have at them, especially physically to come out with the gold.

The Canucks are back at home after a disappointing shootout loss in Atlanta on Friday. The good news is they play a Dallas team that despite staying over in Edmonton will still be tired. The Stars lack of success this season is a major story, Sean Avery circus aside. They have had some injuries, but a lack of production and sub-par goaltending from equipment standards informant Marty Turco has seen the once mighty Stars fall towards the basement of the Western Conference, tied with Nashville for 2nd last and so far behind division leaders San Jose they may need a GPS just to find them. The Stars are currently without Captain Brendan Morrow, Sergei Zubov, Joel Lundqvist and Fabian (Don't believe the hype) Brunnstrom, and last night lost the services of Landon Wilson after 42 seconds. He is listed as questionable. Global reported that the Canucks will have Mattias Ohlund back in the lineup tonight, after leaving the Atlanta game with an upper body injury. The Canucks are still without Roberto Luongo, Sami Salo, Taylor Pyatt, Curtis Sanford, Ryan Johnson and Rick Rypien.
The Canucks have managed to keep the ship afloat during Luongo's absence, but this win a game, lose a game streak has to stop. A win tonight will be the first time the Canucks have earned points in 3 consecutive games since November. The Stars have played better of late, battling to get to a .500 record, but they certainly aren't playing like the team that once dominated the Pacific Division this season. They did earn 8 wins in December, matching their total for the previous 2 months, but have a long road ahead if they hope to make the playoffs. It is worthy to note that those 8 wins have come since the team removed Avery from their lineup. The Canucks will be expecting a better effort from the line of Steve Bernier, Mason Raymond and Kyle Wellwood, who were pointless in Atlanta and called out by Coach Alain Vigneault to show up for tonight's contest. It's a PPV, starting at 7, and it should be a good one. The Canucks Fan Zone will be live blogging tonight, I just may pop in... not sure yet.

NOTES: Though it seems he regularly commits acts worthy of it, the Ducks Cory Perry was finally suspended by the league, this time for an elbow Friday night against the Flyers, he will miss the next 4 contests... What was funnier than Sidney Crosby's 'ready or not' tussle against Carolina? How about Alexander Semin showing that Rock Band and hockey fights don't mix... Wow. Not even sure what to say about that one...

Holidazed...

So as you may have noticed, the updates are not coming fast and furious right now...

I am currently back in Kamloops, spending time with family and will return on Monday, hopefully to rave about what a severe beating the Canucks laid upon the hapless Senators. And by you, I mean the 7 people that read this blog. Christmas and work have been hectic to say the least. So... what's new? While the Vancouver media are in an almost dancing-in-the-streets type frenzy over the signing, most Canucks fans seem to be like myself: very happy but cautiously optimistic.
We do remember other big-name players coming here: Mogilny for one (he played well but never met his potential here) and of course He Who Shall Not Be Named. Let's be clear, this doesn't pencil us in on the cup. But you certainly have to think the Canucks have just taken a huge step forward both in talent and legitimacy. Right up until the announcement, the Rangers were touted as the forerunners in this sweepstakes. All they had to do was move some players and make cap room. We were led to believe that this was actually doable. The revisionism on the behalf of the Rangers and their media actually begins there. Teams have not been able to just magically make cap space, and those that have had to did so in ways that probably hurt more than helped. But Larry Brooks of the New York Post feels that Sundin's decision was based solely on money, calling him a 'mercenary'. That's pretty rich from the beat writer of a team that has been showing the failure of hired guns for a while now. If you look at the facts however, Sundin's decision was based more on hockey and integrity than anything else. he went to a team that yes, offered him a huge contract. But he left a ton of that money on the table. He also went to a team that wasn't going to have to dump salary and players just to make him fit, something that could potentially destroy chemistry on a team. He chose a team he feels is ready to challenge for the cup not just this year but in seasons to come. And most of, I think he chose the team that was straight-up and honest with him from the get-go. There is no way we are even contenders with Burke or Nonis as GM. Mike Gillis made this deal happen, and he should be commended for sticking to his guns and landing this one, when no one in the world thought he could. Now we wait for his appearance in the lineup, and a fresh chapter in what is already a pretty remarkable season for the Canucks.

I had wanted to make a post on Wednesday, but didn't get the time. But I do need to say a few words about Trevor Linden. First, what a classy ceremony. Fitting of the man who did so much for the sport, the team and the city. Secondly, what a great speech. Humble until the end, it certainly cements his reputation as one of the truly good guys, on and off the ice to play the game. Thirdly, good call on MG to postpone what was obviously a big announcement until Thursday. I laugh now when I think about how he basically told everyone he was announcing it Thursday and everyone still insisted the Rangers would get it done. Hah. Oh, and a note to Brian Burke: when you trash the house, being surprised that you don't get invited to the next party is kinda dumb on your part. Maybe you should have called Kevin Lowe for tickets, he might have been a better shot for you.

Pregame for the Blackhawks will be posted tomorrow and believe it or not the podcasts are on their way back very soon.

Canucks 2 Wild 1

Another seemingly impossible win, another game where Jacques Lemaire complains to the press about the Canucks. In three losses to the Canucks this season Lemaire has deemed it necessary to let the press know that evil forces were at work, aiding the Canucks in their victories. Last night, it was the Canucks coaching staff:
"The only thing I have a hard time to accept is their coaching staff is always on top of the referees talking to them — always talking to them," Lemaire said after the Canucks' 2-1 victory at the Xcel Energy Center.

Lemaire and his players believed the Wild's Derek Boogaard had drawn an obvious tripping penalty in the third period. Vancouver's Willie Mitchell reached in with his stick and upended the 6-foot-7 Wild enforcer, but there was no call — and no power-play chance for the NHL's second-best power-play team.

"You saw the game tonight there," Lemaire said of that play. "I can't talk about the referees. You saw what happened."

However, Lemaire went on to say he believes Canucks coach Alain Vigneault and his staff are effectively badgering NHL officials.

"Somebody talks to them all the time," he said, "and you know I just feel at a time it pays off. That's what they're doing. And especially this team, that's the way they do it. It's every game."

I think it's pretty sad that Lemaire is doing this. He is arguably one of the best coaches in NHL history. I say arguably, because he has consistently, in both Minnesota and New Jersey, iced the most boring teams in memory. They were actually playing a trap while trailing in the first period, and apart from the press right at the start of the 2nd that saw Koivu tie it, really didn't muster much more than that for the rest of the game. They were held to 17 shots by a Canucks team that renewed their commitment to team defense and never let their foot off the gas. Congrats to Corey Schneider for his 1st NHL win, and a big thumbs up to Jason Jaffray, who had the game winner, and was an assist away from the Gordie Howe hat trick. We will have a little more on this game tomorrow as well as a preview of the Sunday match against the Avalanche. After that, we are taking a bit of a hiatus until after Boxing Day.

Could you please explain to me...

Why I have to feel bad about my desire to BOO the hell out of Todd Bertuzzi? To put this into perspective, should the Canucks win both games of this home and home series against the Flames, they will extend their lead over them in the NW Division to 9 points. Should they lose both, that lead will be down to a single point. Fortunately, the Canucks have decided that they aren't going to let a groin injury to Roberto Luongo stop them from continuing to play their best hockey of the season. They have only allowed more than 2 goals against once in their last 10 games, and have gone 8-0-2 since their 3-2 loss to Detroit to start the month of November.

Curtis Sanford has played quite well in Luongo's absence, posting a 1.69 GAA in the 3 consecutive games he has played. This game is likely to have a little more than the normal emotion between 2 bitter divisional rivals, as the Flames are unlikely to have forgotten the 2 losses they opened the season with against Vancouver, 6-0 and a 5-4 ot loss that the Flames led 3-1 at one point. Calgary's issue this year seems to be consistency. Mikka Kiprusoff is far from his All Star form of years past, and the once vaunted Calgary defence has made it harder for him by ensuring he leads the league in shots faced. The Flames will look as always to Jarome Iginla to lead the way, something he didn't do against the Canucks in the first 2 games,as he was held pointless. Iginla once again leads the Flames in goals, assists and points, but they will need more efforts like the 6-2 thumping of LA Thursday night if they want to catch the Canucks, a game that saw Mike Cammalleri and Rene Bourque score 2 a piece. Balanced scoring has been a big part of the Canucks' success so far this season, but their top line of Daniel & Henrik Sedin along with Pavol Demitra have been on a tear since being formed upon Demitra's return from injury. One of the real keys to this battle tonight is on defence. Vancouver's lunch bucket crew, led by Willie Mitchell, whose +16 leads all defencemen, and a possible return by Kevin Bieksa, against NHL poster boy (yeah it baffles the hell out of me, too...) Dion Phaneuf and Robyn Regehr. Phaneuf has been forced to play more minutes than ever due to sharp decline on the talent scale after himself and Regehr, averaging more than 28 minutes per game. The Canucks have had good success against the Flames on home ice recently, winning 6 of their last 8, and as we saw against Pittsburgh and Detroit, it would be a mistake to count this team out merely because Roberto Luongo is out of the lineup.

As mentioned, Bieksa is expected to return tonight, and hopes are he will slide right back into the groove he was in before the injury, where he was showing signs of being the defenceman we had seen in him earlier in his career. A bad loss for the Canucks though is that of Ryan Johnson, who has a broken finger on his right hand and broken bone in his left foot. 3 to 5 weeks is the prognosis for the Canucks shot blocking expert. Steve Bernier is doubtful tonight after injuring his shoulder and foot in an awkward colision with the boards Monday night. Luongo, btw is still listed as week to week but canucks.com reports he could return as early as next week. Rick Rypien is still on the IR with a sports hernia tear. The Flames could be without Dustin Boyd, who was injured Tuesday against the Kings. They are also missing Jim Vandermeer and Rhett Warriner.

Keys to the game:
1- Early shutdown: Seems simple enough, but a key for a Canucks win this year seems to be keeping the opponents off the scoresheet in the first. The Canucks are 10-0-2 when they don't allow a goal in the opening period, and 4-6-0 when they do. So a strong start defensively against a Flames team that will no doubt come charging out of the gate will be a huge factor.

2- Picking your battles: It wasn't bad enough the Canucks outscored the Flames in those 2 games 11-4, they also physically dominated the Flames (check out the Rick Rypien beatdown of Brandon Prust in the October archives). While Vandermeer is out of the lineup, you can almost guarantee Andre Roy will attempt to make his impact felt in the first 5 minutes of the game. I would not be shocked not only to see Jarome Iginla fight, but for there to be a line brawl in this one. It smells like old time hockey, and the Canucks must be ready to let the Flames know that they will go with them, but only when it makes sense. If they get an early lead, let the Flames take the penalty and kill them on the PP.

3- Big games from big players: Sure, everyone needs to play their roles. But in games like this, you need your top players to step up. The PHD line will need to continue their hot streak (26 points in the last 6 games) and they will also need some production from Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows and Kyle Wellwood. Defensively, Willie Mitchell, Mattias Ohlund and Sami Salo must continue their strong play on both sides of the puck. Vancouver has 20 more points from the D compared to this time last season, one huge factor in their success thus far.

The beauty of this run the Canucks find themselves on is it's not like each game finds them making Cinderella-type comebacks with lots of fluke goals. The wins have come with basic, honest hard work to a man from this team. They have jelled in a way we aren't used to seeing with the club, and it's kind of nice. There really isn't any reason to think they can't continue to roll, if they bring the same work ethic and attitude to GM place tonight. The game goes at 7 on Sportsnet and the team 1040.
