Snowklahoma

Yesterday we received record breaking snowfall. The official amount ended up being 21 inches with up to 8 foot snow drifts. We were pretty much forced to stay inside all day due to the blizzard conditions. However, later in the afternoon after the snow stopped falling, we did get out some, but not for long- it was so cold! The boys loved being out in the deep snow- but were very ready to come inside and thaw out after only 15 minutes or so.

***I am just now journaling the snow day that we had back in January due to some issues getting my pictures off of my camera.

The first snow day of the year was January 10. There wasn't very much snow, but the boys made the best of it and had a few snowball fights. These pictures were taken while the snow was still falling. My camera battery died so I didn't get any pictures after there was more snow.

It's kind of crazy looking at these pictures with the "limited" amount of snow on the ground.We are currently snowed in because of the Oklahoma Blizzard of 2011. The snow I can see out my window right now make this seem like nothing.

A Genuine Cowboy- Sort Of

Koen had cowboy day at school recently. He was decked out. He wore a western shirt, bandanna and genuine cowboy boots. All he was missing was a genuine cowboy hat. He was so cute. I'm not sure the cowboy hat could have added any more cuteness though. I just love seeing his hair. I hope it's red-ish forever!

This is my official apology to my parents (Mom in particular) for how much I hated shots as a kid. The boys both had shots today and lets just say that I will NEVER take them to both get shots by myself again. Gannon cried the whole way there and as soon as we were called back to the room the boys started full out fighting about who was going first. I was mortified. The nurse assured me that she had seen worse. I finally was able to sort of convince Koen to go first. I did however,have to pick him up and put him on the table. At one point the nurse asked me if she should get another nurse to help hold him down.

So, meanwhile Gannon was standing in the corner of the room shaking, crying his eyes out begging them to DON"T DO IT! I encouraged Gannon not to watch and he very quickly covered his eyes and sobbed louder. Just for memories sake, although I am not sure how I would ever forget it, he sounded somewhat like a mix between a cow giving brith and who know what else. Once I was able to lay across Koen with his hands under me, the nurse administered the shot and he barely even flinched. He didn't cry or anything at the actual poke of the shot.

Gannon was just as hard if not more to get up on the table, but even though he was kicking with all his might, not having another child that was having a nervous breakdown (remember that sound he was making) in the corner made things a little easier.

By the time it was all over I was completely sweaty and my necklace had been pulled off. We got our things together and left the room to check out. The boys both said with swollen tear streaked faces "That wasn't so bad!" Really?!?!?!?!?

The Language of a Brother

The boys are so close to each other in age and relationship. Sometimes they fight alot, but I have to think that they really love each other too. I know they would stand up for each other if need be and I like to think they will be the best of friends as adults too. At dinner tonight we talked about our family being a team and that we are for (rather than against) each other. This talk came on the heels of some disagreements that the boys had while building with Lego's this afternoon. Gannon was not wanting to agree that we were a team. Him and Koen got into discussion about it after I had tried to explain what I meant by that. Koen very easily got the point across by saying, "Gannon we have been a team since the beginning." It seemed to satisfy Gannon, as he no longer disagreed with the "family is a team" idea. I think they understand each other alot, maybe even more than I understand them. They speak each others language and seem to figure each other out so quickly. Later I was looking through older pictures and found these. How fitting.

Less is More

It is 2011 which is hard to believe considering it seems like just yesterday that so many were sure that things were to go awry come 2000 aka Y2K. But , time kept on ticking and another decade has come and gone. It is interesting because we are starting another decade in the sense of calendar years, but I am also starting another decade of my life. I feel a sense of excitement about the starting of both new decades.

I am not one to make New Year's Resolutions, nor do I plan to this year. I do feel like this year holds a lot of potential in the Bruski household. There are some exciting changes on the horizon that I am looking forward to see unfold. I just feel so good about 2011 and I will do my part to keep that good feeling going. I believe that attitude is THE most important part of the outcome of your day to day life. I hope I can instill that in my boys as well.

The attitude that I want to keep at the forefront of my mind this year is that less is more. This could go many different directions, but to begin with, our family is going to slow down. Maybe the success of a simpler Christmas has spurred this idea on, but I feel that we need more of a sense of simplicity in our home. In order to simplify we will likely have to turn down activities or invites, prioritize with much more scrutiny and be intentional on doing the things that truly matter. Another way I plan to simplify is by decluttering our house and being more picky about what comes into our home by considering: Do we really NEED it? Will it add to our home or simply take up space?

I can't wait to see what this year holds for us. Soon I am going to attempt to recap what the last decade has brought our way. It's kind of fun to reminisce and evaluate where you have been and where you would like to go.

This year will be super busy, but by intentionally focusing on making our life simpler in the areas that we can control, I think I will be able to embrace more of the carefree attitude that my two redheads have mastered so well!

Christmas Simplified

I can truly say that we had the best Christmas that I remember in years. SO many lessons were learned this Christmas from various events that happened. Each lesson learned helped to make this Christmas fabulous! I really am just journaling this for myself so that I can remember how making Christmas simpler this year helped to make it one of the best on record. This post is rather long so consider this fair warning.

To begin with; going into the season I made the commitment to myself that I would not over commit myself or try to over extend myself. I began by simplifying my decorations. ~~I have yet to take them down, but I bet I will thank myself when it comes time to take them down as well.~~ Since I originally started this post I have taken them down and as we were hauling things up to the attic I was very glad at how quickly I was able to get everything put away,. I cut down on how many sweets and goodies I cooked. And last I let go of many expectations for Christmas. In years past I have expected my children to act perfectly as we madly rush from place to place and spend time with friends and family. I expect them to act overly thankful and happy with each gift, which is different from grateful I have now realized. In years past I have expected to be able to jam pack our days leading up to Christmas with happy Christmas activities that will get us in the Christmas mood, when all they really do (in such large quantities anyways) is cause burnout.

This year I listed all the activities I had done in the past and then choose my favorite 5 and stuck with those. I turned down many invitations for holiday parties and such and just stuck to a few get togethers and mostly family time.

As Christmas grew closer I was letting myself fall back into old habits of hustle bustle and began to find myself very frazzled over all the things that needed to be done before Christmas. A few days before Christmas Koen became very ill and we had a couple of very scary days wondering what the outcome would be. This really gave me a reality check and I quickly realized what was important.

When Christmas did arrive I was so thankful for a healthy (mostly) family and what a miracle that was considering what had happened just earlier that week. As an adult, I do not believe I have had a happier Christmas. I was just truly overjoyed to be with my family and nothing else seemed to matter.

I did not get all of my Christmas cards out due to Koen's sickness, but I did get some out to mostly those that live away and that don't get to see the boys often as I included their picture in the Christmas card.

Like I said before I wanted to journal this in order to remember my feelings of this Christmas and keep things in perspective for years to come!

I didn't take hardly any pictures on Christmas, which I kind of regret, but I do have very good memories of my own, so I am OK with that. Here are a few I did get.

Summer Highlights {Post Vacation to Mid July}

We have done so much since we have been back from vacation. Here is a quick recap.

We went to a super fun birthday party at the Kiddie Park in Bartlesville.

Wayne, Shelly and the girls came over for a beautiful fireworks show and concert at Stone Canyon.

We went to Owasso Stadium to see the city of Owasso's fireworks for the first time ever! Also for the first time in history(that I know of) Gannon fell asleep about 2 minutes into the fireworks. They were so loud- I do not know how he slept!!

We enjoyed hosting a few friends, family and old and new neighbors for a cookout and some fireworks(in the rain) on July 3.

On July 4th after church we enjoyed some time with my parents and then we watched and lit fireworks with our neighbors. We were introduced to a new firework this year that is definitely my favorite- the sky lantern.

We took the kids to see Toy Story 3- 3D. SUCH a good movie! Very sad, but what a great way to end such a good 3 movies!

Brandon and I went to see Grown Ups- HILARIOUS!!!

Had to give our guinea pigs ( Moose and Fibble) away due to allergies and such, but thankfully Susie and Erin agreed to take them so we can go visit when the boys want to see them.

Had a great week at VBS at church- Treasure Quest. The highlights for the boys were the puppets, great music and seeing Bubba get inside of a 6 foot balloon and tell the story of Jonah from inside. It was so cool!

We celebrated my Mom's birthday! At this time last year she was taking radiation. She is once again cancer free, although she still struggles with some stomach issues that prevent her from eating some things. We are so thankful that she is cancer free and super glad to celebrate her birthday!

My Aunt Carol came into town for a family reunion so we headed to Fort Gibson lake a couple of days to spend time with her. The boys really enjoyed getting to spend time with her and she SPOILED them!

I know that there are probably things that I have missed and I would like to add pictures to this post, so this may be a post in progress for a while. It has been so hot the last week or so and I can hardly stand to be outside. I was looking through pictures and found this one- I needed to see this to remind me that the seasons will change and before we know it this "Oppressive" heat (as one of our weather men has been calling it) will be long gone!

Summer Vacation 2010 Part 2

On Wednesday morning we headed to Manitou Springs. We took the Cog Railway up to the summit of Pikes Peak.

After one and a half hours on the train we arrived at the summit of Pike's Peak. This was a breathtaking experience. You could see for miles! We were all bundled up as it was 35 atop the mountain with a wind chill of 32!!

{ The view was simply unbelievable. The pictures really do it no justice. }

{ I really like this picture because if you notice slightly to the right of center is a very red rock formation sprouting up out of the middle of nowhere. This is known as Garden of the Gods and we were also able to visit here while we were on the trip. }

We were allowed 40 minutes on the summit due to the risk of altitude sickness. At the top we were at 14, 1115 feet in altitude. We learned so much neat history about Pike's Peak. Once we got on the train and started heading down I caught this great shot of the moon while we were still above timberline.

Thursday we explored Garden of the Gods. Before we headed there we ate at The Hungry bear in Woodland Park, CO. It was so yummy!

After Garden of the Gods we began our journey home. We stopped and had lunch in Pueblo, Co at the river walk, stopped and got gas in Trinidad, Co and then we briefly drove through New Mexico- which was a very pretty drive. During this portion of the trip we were able to see the Sangre de Cristo mountains as well as a beautiful mountain range in new Mexico.

We made it to Guymon, Ok out in the Oklahoma panhandle and we stayed the night there. The kids were able to swim at the hotel to get some energy out. We drove home the next morning. We had such a great trip! We would love to go back to the Colorado Springs area again because there was so much more that we could have done.

Summer Vacation 2010 Part 1

For vacation this year we traveled to Beaver Creek, Co as well as Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs , Co. The first part of the week was spent in Beaver Creek with my father in law and his family. We stayed in a super cool condo/cabin. Kelsey Grammar used to own the one next door- cool huh?

For this portion of the trip we did very little driving once we got to the condo. We could walk out the back door of the condo right down into the quaint village below and shop, take in the GREAT scenery, ice skate or catch a lift up the mountain.

Our first day there we caught the lift up the mountain.Brandon was not sure if he was going to like the lift(he doesn't like heights and he HATES Ferris wheels), but he did get on and for the most part he did OK. Once we got off the lift we took in the beautiful view and had lunch. We could see the village below as well as the Gore Mountain Range. After lunch we took a short hike and than sat and took in the view some more. The boys enjoyed taking LOTS of pictures with their kid-friendly cameras.

I love this picture. We saw a Mule Deer and her new baby as we were hiking. The kids were taking pictures and Gannon shared with Isabel so she could take a picture too.

One day we went to a park nearby in Avon, Co and let the kids play as well as rent paddle boats and spend some time paddling on Nottingham Lake.

Our last day in Beaver Creek we spent part of the day shopping in the village and after dinner we took the kids ice skating. Gannon was not so fond, but Koen loved it. He had never been skating of any kind, but he just took off.

Happy 4th Birthday Gannon

Today we celebrated Gannon's 4th birthday! It is hard to believe that my "baby" is 4! He is such an amazing little guy at 4- he is so independent and just a fireball. He is also a thinker- always coming up with something that blows my mind! We enjoyed a batman themed birthday party. Unfortunately I "lost" my camera during the party (it was in my back pocket all along- I am sure the 32 kiddos running around had something to do with my absentmindedness). I only have one picture from the whole party and it's of the cake. My mom did get lots of other pictures but unfortunately I don't have them available to add to the blog. The cake was so cool- a mom from the preschool made it. She is so great! And just for memories sake- I had to put Gannon in timeout at his own b-day party. I don't think I want to remember the "incident" so I'm not going to document that. Ha!

High School Reunion

I really wanted to document this for memories sake.

This was one busy weekend. It began with my high school reunion. On Friday we started out with a tailgating party and a tour of the high school. It has changed so much and it is beautiful. Koen and Gannon came with us Friday night and they thought that they were so cool to get to see the high school. They especially loved the gym. This is kind of ironic because that is where I spent so much of my time in high school. I cheered and had to be there at 6 a.m. every morning and we practiced till I think around 8:45. The gym has been slightly redone, but the area just outside the gym was totally different.

The boys and I got a quick picture overlooking the gym.

We had a few friends over after the football game. It was a perfect evening. We hung out on the patio and had a fire in the chimenea and our fire pit. It was perfect. We reunited with some old friends that we had not seen in a while.

Saturday we went to the banquet for the reunion and had a wonderful evening. Brandon and I won the High school sweetheart award. I am so happy to have spent so many years with him, I wouldn't change a thing.

The reunion was great! It was so good to see old friends. I can't wait till the next one!

We ended the weekend by celebrating Koen's 5th birthday. I will blog about that soon!

The B Word in Spanish

Just for fun I thought I would record how our morning went today. Just so when I am so far out of these having two young kiddos that I fail to remember these things.

Gannon has been fully potty trained for a long time- except at night. He just can't get the hang of it. Well- for two weeks he woke up with a dry pull up. Two weeks seems like long enough- right? So last night he slept in underwear. Guess who was in my room at 2:19 a.m. ( well actually it was 2:09 because my clock is 10 minutes fast)? Yep- you got it- Gannon. And guess what he said- "Mommy you forgot to put a pull up on me I AM WET!" And ringing wet he was! So I got him changed, his bed changed and back to sleep we went. He was quite grumpy yesterday so I let him sleep in this morning. When he woke at 9:00 I just knew he would be more chipper. And it seemed as though I was right until.....

We were going to have cereal and bacon and fruit for breakfast. We had talked about this last night- that's what they had requested. So as we went into the kitchen Koen announced " I want a nutrigrain bar." Gannon shrieks NOOOOO! He did not want Koen to have a nutrigrain bar. After all we had already discussed breakfast and what was on the menu the night before right? Well- I somehow got that fire put out and got the cereal boxes out for them to choose. There was this one type of cereal out of 4 that had very little in it. And they both wanted it. So I told them they would have to split it- Gannon MAD! So I split it between their bowls and - Gannon MAD! I was being calm and explaining that we would buy more next time we went to the store blah, blah, blah. SO I get the milk and as I pour milk into Koen's- Gannon is still MAD- but now for a different reason. This is NOT the kind of cereal I want! Oh really- problem solved!

So the rest of Breakfast was pretty good until....

Gannon has been testing the waters lately with the B word- butt. We don't allow the boys to say it but (oops) Gannon really likes to try to slip it in- for reaction from us of course. So we have now told him that he will get his mouth washed out (man I hope he doesn't continue to say it- I don't want to wash his mouth out!) At breakfast he was saying something nonsensical and silly- this is Gannon we are talking about, and out comes ButtKick. He immediately covered his mouth and said I won't say it anymore. Of course the GREAT mother that I am was choking back laughter- have you heard a cute as a button three year old say BUTTKICK lately? It was funny! So he then rambles on in Gannon language. Koen is gearing up to watch the soap washing that is sure to come and when he realizes that it may not be coming cause Mommy is laughing I am sure his smart brain strted scheming. Well, as Gannon rambled on in his own speak Koen said

" MMMMMMMM, Gannon said the B word in Spanish!!!"

Gotta love this life- never a dull moment at the Bruski's!

You know how some days are just different than any other? You can kind of feel it coming. You know that it will be monumental (your little slice of the world monumental). And then when it arrives you know it is going to be different THAN MOST OTHER DAYS.

Today was one of those days.

For 4 years 10 months and 23 days Koen was always with me. Always is relative, but mostly always with me. He went to work with me- yes he wasn't always in my classroom, but he was there. I have left him with family, friends, or Daddy and been without him. So why would today seem so different? Not sure- I am still trying to figure that out. I know that a piece of this puzzle that I have tried to solve all day has not so much to do with today but more to do with the past 4 years, 10 months, 23 days that we just left behind and the next years and years to come. I think every Mom has felt this as they faced the day like we did today. Maybe Dad's too- not sure. I felt alot of emotions about today...happy SAD anxious uncertainty PRIDE- and I knew that everything that I have done for him in the last 4 years, 10 months and 23 days had prepared him for this day. I just hoped that he would keep his senses today through all the excitement that he was feeling to remember all that we have taught him- manners, kindness, understanding, diversity...

So today came, and Koen was talking ninety to nothing about what his day was to hold. He was clearly EXCITED! I talked to Gannon; giving him fair warning that today would be the day that Koen would leave for awhile and he would not. I just knew that Gannon's little heart would break a bit missing his big brother. He said "OK Mama." In the end it was Koen that missed Gannon- go figure!

The time finally came so Koen got dressed in his new clothes and shoes. He spent a few extra seconds in front of the mirror looking at how handsome he was. I was glad he slowed down long enough for me to admire my sweety as well. He came downstairs so HAPPY that Daddy had come home from work to see him off. He knew it was picture time- I am his mother after all! So he headed to the fireplace (default pic spot in our house) to have his photo shoot.

First he was a little shy for the camera.

Then he warmed up a bit.

I loved on him for a sweet picture- Molly even wanted to send him off right.

And he was one handsome boy!

We arrived with plenty of time...at a brand new school...

Walked hand in hand with Daddy- shoulders held high.

Stopped one last time for a picture before going inside.

With much excitement Koen found his room.

Mrs. McLoughlin had his name sticker ready as we entered.

As he put his backpack away in his cubby his eyes were wide with excitement as he took in all there was to see in the classroom.

Koen then gave us both hugs and kisses and took his seat on the carpet just as his teacher had asked.

And off we went...into the 4th year, 10th month and 24th day of his life. We are more proud of this little boy than I ever thought a person could be. And as I drove away through blurred vision, I knew he would do great, love it, thrive on learning, never cease to be curious, but for some reason letting go was hard today.

It was so great as I drove into the loop, saw him in his little line of classmates, pointing and waving "That is my Mommy" he said. As he got into the car I knew he had a great day. He couldn't have been more happy at that moment.

Today we left for vacation. We are ultimately going to Montana to see Brandon's Grandparents. We are heading to Denver today and tommorow we will go to Jackson Hole Wyoming. Tuesday we will meander through Yellowstone National Park before heading into Montana. Before we left we loaded up 12 hours of music, probably more stuff than we need and the handy dandy DVD players and off we went. Today we saw a wind energy farm in Hays, Kansas. It was a neat site. Something this Oklahoma girl has never seen before. In Gannon's words- That was cool.

Like I have been saying- I am going to play catch up.

~~Short~~, ~~sweet~~ honest and to the point- hopefully.

May………………..

I started my new job as Assistant Preschool director.

It’s the perfect job for me.

The boys started T-ball.

Koen’s considered designated hitter.

Brandon and I celebrated 7 years of marriage.

We've now been married longer than we dated.

June……………

We had a garage sale with Mom.

We made $400 dollars exactly.

We had VBS at church. Gannon got to watch frogs eat crickets. They both got to see a man on a bike play a didgeridoo.

Mom had surgery after discovering something abnormal on a PET scan. Her ovarian cancer has returned. She got her “tattoo” today. She begins radiation soon.

July……………….

We celebrated the 4^th of July on the 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th.

We broke tradition and did not go to the river for fireworks. Good thing we didn’t.

Koen and Gannon completed swim lessons. Koen advanced 2 levels and Gannon passed on to the next level.
