LiveResponse™ is a professional hosted service for broadcasting live video from temporary field locations to back-office settings and coordination centers. The live video is broadcasted from an ordinary cellphone and the videos are available via a hosted secure web application.
Allowing managers, experts and coordinators to assess the situation or problem at the field location leads to better understanding, improved problem solving as well as efficient coordination of complex tasks.

LiveResponse™ is based on results from a collaborative research project started in 2008, funded by the Viktoria Institute, Security Arena at Lindholmen Science Park and the Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre - SAFER at Chalmers University. The successful results from an extensive evaluation study at local emergency response organizations formed the foundation for transforming the insights into a hosted service for a global market. As a result IDEAviate AB was started by the design team and the Viktoria Institute.

The video gets a little bit into the technical ins and outs of the system, but what I find most interesting is the overall idea of this system. It basically allows you to get what you want out of technology without having to think about how to interface with it. This seems to be an interesting trend blooming in the tech world with the introduction of Microsoft’s Natal project at the recent E3 convention. This is something I have thought a lot about recently, and I think that if this trend keeps up, we could be on the cusp of making the next big technology leap, to where we don't notice the technology at all.

BeoVision 4 - My TV vision

Danish home electronics manufacturer Bang & Olufsen, famous for their slim lines and big price tags, are back with a new TV in their BeoVision line - and as always, it is all about luxury. BeoVision 4 comes in three different sizes, but I will focus on the larger of them - the 103 inch plasma screen.

Weighing in at about 500 kilogram (1100 pounds) this baby has all there is to wish for when it comes to design and technology. It would be the centerpiece in any living room in any home. I myself have not always understood all the fuss about B&O, but now it all comes clear to me.

The obvious question is "Where's the catch?" - and of course there is a catch. As mentioned, B&O are well known as a luxury brand and the price is therefore more than most can afford. The 103 inch version of BeoVision 4 is a € 100 000 plus taxes - it is time to smash your pig bank!

Introductions and Interesting Audio Art

Aaron Koblin and Daniel Massey have put together a piece of work that is pretty interesting from a lot of angles. Bicycle built for two thousand is a rendering of the old standard Daisey Bell, pieced together syllable by syllable and frequency by frequency with small vocal samples collected from all over the world. People were told to mimic a sound based on a short clip and not given any context for how it would be used.

There are more of the technical details of how this was done on the info page, but if you are wondering why this is interesting, beyond the sheer patience it takes to arrange 2,088 vocal samples into a recognizable pattern, it is because the very first example of vocal synthesis was in 1962 when Max Mathews and company compiled a version of this song electronically. That may not sound like much, but it was revolutionary at the time. And just as computers revolutionized this piece of music back then, social technology is doing so now. Also, it sounds pretty creepy.

Also, we are looking for someone to market We Find the Stuff online, by writing about us in forums, getting people to link back to us and things like that.

So, are we not going to post any entries at all now, you might wonder. Well, yeah, Christofer and I will be posting when we feel that we have the time to. But right now, we are pretty full, sadly.

Remember Wall-E, the animated robot in the Pixar movie titled as the main character? Here is a short film by Pixar about what might be his brother - Burn-E.

"Sonata is a film about a brief and fleeting moment in a man's life. He must face his fears and doubts and decide whether or not to take a chance." The film is made as a final thesis by a Vancouver Film School student.

Presto is another short film by Disney Pixar and shows the struggle between an illusionist and a hungry rabbit. Some of you might have seen it before, but it is definitely worth another look.

This is the story about Kiwi who spends his whole life working toward fulfilling his dream. This film too is a school project, made by Doni Permedi as a master thesis animation at The School of Visual Arts, New York City.

The video in this film again is made by Disney Pixar, however YouTube user RealDarknessWorriors made some editing and added the "McFly - Five Colours In Her Hair" song. The original version, along with other sound edited versions are available on YouTube.

This film was posted at WFTS some time ago and Henrik wrote "What will warfare be like a hundred years after the Hiroshima bombing, that being in 2045? Well, Vincent Chai, an animator with some real skills, will show you in this video. This is Vincents final degree project, made during his studies in 3D Animation at the University Of Hertfordshire in the UK. "

Big Buck Bunny is the film about a bunny who wakes up in his rabbit hole, only to be pestered by three other animals. When one of them kills a butterfly, Buck decides on a payback.

One man band is yet another Pixar beauty - this two-man-struggle is just great.

Unfortunately the embedding-function was disabled on this video and I couldn't seem to find any else, so I will just link you to it. Mario's Plumbing is quite an amusing piece about a man fixing his own bathroom plumbing - and no, it is not Super Mario.

I can't help my self, also the last film is a Disney Pixar piece. One mans (well...) struggle to control the machine.

The agency behind this campaign Ogivly & Mather, has done a great job and really reaches out to the viewer. Korea was split up when Japan was defeated in WW2 and the Soviet Union occupied the north part of the Korean peninsula and allied western countries occupied the south part. In 1950 North Korea used Soviet tanks and weaponry to invade South Korea which was the start of the Korean War in which millions of civilians died and most cities were destroyed. Today South Korea is a prospering nation with a people even more wealthy than my fellow Swedes (and we're wealthy alright), and North Korea suffers under the insane rule of dictator and Hollywood movie fan Kim Jong-il.

Japanese home electronics manufacturer JVC released these speakers with build in plant pots at the Tokyo Design Week about a month ago. The speakers are made from eco-friendly plastic and with a nice plant in the pot, it will bring some green feeling to your home. The speakers are easily linked together Lego-style.

How about charging your mobile phone, camera or iPod with wind power. This Mini Wind Turbine Charger from firebox.com will charge the internal battery at wind speeds between 9 and 40 mph, which then can be used to charge your devices. With an additional kit you can mount it on your bike and a 20 minute charge at 19 mph (30 km/h) should give you a 30 minute play time on your iPod.

Philips recently announced their 42" Full HD flat panel Eco TV - the 42PFL5603D model. Using eco friendly technology, this flat screen uses approximately 75 Watts, compared to other flat screen TVs which usually consumes 100 Watts or more. One of the three significant new features is a sensor that detects background light levels, resulting in lower backlight intensity when the room is darker. Along with these features, Philips have considered the standby current, and have managed to keep the usage down to just 0.15 Watts.

Italian luxury clothing company Zegna introduces a ski jacket that features a neoprene collar with solar panels stitched into them. The solar panels can be used to charge mobile phones, iPods and any other USB-connected device. It might not do that much change to environment I guess, but I like the idea of embedding solar panels into everyday things. For more info, see the ZegnaSport website.

How about saving the world and saving some money at the same time? Wattson Home Energy Meter displays the amount of electricity you are using at any given time, trough a combination of colours and numbers. Just clip the wireless sensor around your electricity meter and put the Wattson somewhere you can see it, and watch your electricity consumption and associated costs in real time. Now you can wander around your house turning of lights, observe your savings as you go.

It is often said that a shower uses less water than a bath, but that really depends on the flow rate and the shower head. The Eco Showerdrop is said to be the first low-cost, universal shower meter. The digital display lets you know exactly how much water your shower dispenses and a simple alert informs you when the recommended amount of water has been dispensed - meaning 35 litres. Saving water means saving energy - better for you, better for the environment.

This flashlight don't need batteries and the LED bulbs will last up to 100 000 hours, according to Amazon.com where the product is being sold. Cranking it for only 1 minute will give you 120 minutes of light. I'm not sure how they store the power from the cranking when there's no battery, but it seams pretty neat.

Today the USB memory sticks are more common and more used than ever, they are even so cheap, companies hand the out for free in marketing purposes. This off course lead to new waste and fortunately a couple of eco-friendly alternatives has spotted the light of day. Depicted below is EarthDrive, made out of completely recyclable plastic and another one from Swedish INF Import made out of recycled newspapers.

Rechargeable batteries is becoming increasingly popular and that certainly increases the health of the environment. One of the few annoying things about these batteries is the need to carry around different chargers and adapters to power them up. Fortunately, USB Cells from UK based company Moixa Energy solves the problem with a built in USB plug used to juice them up straight from the users PC. Due to the nomination for a National Energy Efficiency Award, the USB Cells are expanding from the original AA size, to also include C, D, 9V and mobile phone batteries. The USB Cells can also be used in conventional chargers, if you have no PC around.

With decreasing reserves of fresh water, this fresh water harvesting device from Element Four just might come in handy. The WaterMill works by drawing moisture from outdoor air, condenses it and filter it info fresh drinking water. Under ideal conditions, the WaterMill promises to provide 3.2 gallons (about 12 litres) a day, which would be enough for a family of six. According to Element Four, the WaterMill operates “at a cost of approximately 11 cents per gallon (three cents per liter), the average operating cost of 35 cents a day is a fraction of that of bottled water, which averages around $4.00 per day for the same amount of water.” Pretty nice!

Simply the Best

Think what you want about Manchester United, personally I sympathize with Tottenham, but they for sure hosted one of the most interesting personalities in the history of football - George Best.

As the first of five siblings, George Best was born in south east Belfast, Northern Ireland in late May 1946. At the age of 15, his talent was discovered by United scout Bob Bishop whose telegram to the United manager at that time, Sir "Matt" Busby, is said to have read: "I think I've found you a genius.". In September 1963, at the age of 17, George Best made his debut at Old Trafford in a 1-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion. Two weeks later Best scored his first goal and at the end of the season he was booked for a total of six strikes. At the age of 27, 1 January 1974 "Georgie" played his last competitive game in the United shirt against Queens Park Rangers. The United career resulted in a total of 466 appearances and 178 goals (including six in one game against Northampton Town) - he was the club's top scorer for six consecutive years. From this point on Best's career went into a rapid decline as he drifted between clubs in Ireland, America, Scotland and Australia.

Remember him as the true player he was.

George soon became a media favorite and his talent and showmanship made him the favorite among the crowd as well. His long hair, good looks and luxury lifestyle gave him the nickname "The Fifth Beatle". He was a true womanizer and got married twice, first to Angela MacDonald-James (1978-1986) and then to Alex Pursey (1995-2004). Below is George Best in bed with Swedish Miss World 1977 winner Mary Stavin (Mary Ann-Catrin Stävin).

British magazine GQ made George Best number four on their Top 50 Most Stylish Men list, beaten only by Marcello Mastroianni, Steven McQueen and David Bailey.

On the down side, George Best was a heavy drinker and over the years he developed alcoholism as well as gambling problems. In 1984 he was sentenced to three months in prison for drunk driving, assault on a police officer and failing to post bail. 20 years later, in February 2004 Best was convicted of another drunk driving offense and was banned from driving for 20 months. In September 1990, George Best appeared on BBC primetime chat show Wogan and clearly drunk he states "Terry, I like screwing!". Later George apologizes for his behavior, meaning his alcoholism was as worst during that time. A short clip from the show is posted below.

In August 2002 George Best had a successful liver transplant, but he continued his open drinking and attracted a lot of criticism for it. Three years later, in early October 2005 George admitted intensive care, suffering kidney infection caused by the side-effects of the drugs used to prevent his body from rejecting his transplanted liver. Five days prior to his death, in November 2005, British tabloid newspaper News of the World, on request by George Best published a photo of George in his hospital bed, along with his final message "Don't die like me". Five days later, the life of a legend ended.

This Dexter inspired set of furniture and table setting details is pretty neat, even though it might be a bit to extreme to go into my apartment.

The chairs are severely limited and comes as ten side chairs ($2500 a piece) and two arm chairs ($5000 a piece). These are my favorites in the set.

I am not sure that a setting with these plates and cutlery is the best to use when you invite your mother in law, but it is still damn nice.

11 people with extraordinary abilities

Meet Ben Underwood, the boy who sees without eyes. This guy lost his eyes to cancer but developed the amazing skill to "see" the world around him using sounds that he makes and then listens to - kind of like a bat.

This Londoner is called Stephen Wiltshire and he has a truly great memory. He is an autistic savant, which makes him one of just a few people in the whole world with this syndrome. Savants often have some disorders that work against them, but many of them develop incredible skills instead - like Stephen. He can draw an entire city from memory and in great detail too. In this video Stephens skills is tested as he gets to draw the city of Rome after a ride in a helicopter.

Next guy, Kim Peek, has been called The Real Rain Man. This is because Dustin Hoffmans character in the movie from 1988 was based on Kim Peek. Kims brain is really extreme. He can name almost anything you ask him, what day in the week the 4th of August was back in 1744, all the American presidents, famous people and everything about them, historical events and so on - in short, he remembers almost everything he ever read - he can't forget. This story is in five parts, see them all below.

David Tammet is, just like Kim Peek and Stephen Wiltshire, a savant with special abilities. But when you can see that something is unusual with Peek and Wiltshire, David Tammet seems just like any other guy - he doesn't seem to have any disorders like other savants have. David Tammet can do extreme calculations in his head and he does this by "seeing" the numbers as shapes and colors in his head.

Alonzo Clemons, also a savant, can make really detailed shapes of animals from memory, using clay or wax.

Cameron Macauley is a young boy who seems to have lived before. He tells stories of a previous life that doesn't seem to be made up. Has he really lived before? See the video and make up your own mind.

Wim Hof is in control of his core heat controlling mechanisms, making him able to withstand extreme cooling. In this video he tries to run half a Marathon in the cold above the polar circle in Finland - wearing just shorts and a winter hat.

Well, this might not qualify as extraordinary abilities but what these conjoined twins, Abby & Brittany Hensel, have to deal with in their everyday life is somewhat extraordinary I think. So, here is number eight and nine.

Derek Paravicini is a musical genious and he can play any song he ever heard. If you want a whole documentary about him, here is the five parts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The documentary is somewhat long, so here is a shorter video, which I couldn't embedd due to user request.

Just like David Tammet, this German guy called Rudiger Gamm is really skilled in math and he can do massive calculations very fast in his head.

Back in 1999 Honda started their research on exoskeleton devices to support their workshop personal. The first experimental machine was a walking assist device aimed to support people who can still walk on their own, but who could benefit from the extra stride length offered by the device.

The second experimental machine, now tested in Honda factories is another walking device that supports bodyweight and reduces the load on leg muscles, hip, knees and ankles. The machine also supports the users balance with a mechanism that directs the assisting force toward the users center of gravity.

As seen in the picture below the structure is simple, consisting of seat, frame and shoes. To wear it the user simply puts on the shoes and adjust the seat into position and of he goes.

Below are pictures of this exoskeletal device in use - looks pretty damn cool and useful if you ask me.

In one of their recent advertising campaigns German car manufacturer Audi takes a swing at their competitors in the luxury car segment; BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. In this series of ads we meet the leisure class dysfunctional family with the old man driving a Mercedes, the cocky unsympathetic brother driving a BMW, the dork brother in his Lexus and the very sympathetic Audi driver. African dictatorship Republic of Zimbabwe lead by president Robert Mugabe is facing economic problems of enormous proportions. The inflation in Zimbabwe rose from an annual rate of 32% in 1998 to an estimated high of 11 200 000 % in July 2008, according to CNN. No you didn't misread, 11.2 million percent. To put this in a perspective, the Swedish annual inflation is approximately 2 %. The galloping inflation forced Zimbabwe's central bank to introduce a 100 billion dollar note. Further more CNN states that the price of a loaf of bread in the country, in February 2008, was less than 200 000 Zimbabwe dollars. In August 2008, the same loaf of bread cost astonishing 1.6 trillion Zimbabwe dollars. The photography was uploaded to Flickr and depicts the new 100 billion dollar bill.

International gambling company Ladbrokes started to hand out condoms with their company logotype and short messages like "Don't play with fire - Play with us!" and "Go all in - but play it safe!". To the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Ladbrokes chief in Sweden Andreas Gillberg says that "We came to think about the fact that condoms - just like Ladbrokes - is all about safe transactions. Just like our games, it's about excitement and safety at the same time". This advertising campaign was aimed toward college- and university students all around Sweden and to me it's both intelligent and funny. Depicted bellow is three packs of Ladbrokes condoms - the text in Swedish says something like "Safe plays since 1886".

We are in the era of image manipulation and Photoshop retouching, and sometimes this fine art goes wrong. Here is a few examples, all found on the excellent blog Photoshop Disasters. It looks like there is some weird shit going on in the new 90210. Here is one whith an odd reflection in the window behind the bulldozer. This one could actually use some Photoshopping. Here is a t-shirt with a really visible print. If you're about to buy a house, remember to watch out for dogzilla here. Ooops. This looks like a serious injury to me. I read this article in inspirational online magazine PSFK yesterday and thought it was a cool idea. Well, not the blog post itself, but the creative travel guide to Beijing mentioned in the post. The guide called a little beijing is made up of a lot of postcards and a map with a route to follow. As a tourist you just follow the route on your map and when you arrive at certain destinations you've already got matching postcards with you, which you post and then the people at home can follow your every step and in the right order. I love this idea, it should be spread to other cities as well.

These two ads went live in United States yesterday and is yet another punch in the stomach for Microsoft in the war between the to rivals; Microsoft and Apple. The first video is a parody on the fact that Microsoft is spending $300 million on advertising Windows Vista.

The second video is another parody pointing out that Microsoft is trying to sell a product without mention it by name in commercials like this. This is great stuff!

This concept toaster from US based company Inventables must be indispensable for any kitchen gadget freak, or anyone who is just a sucker for perfect toast in the morning. With a transparent toaster you can watch the bread turn that lovely roasted color and push the button when it's ready. The idea is to use a transparent heating glass technology - unfortunately the glass still isn't getting hot enough to toast a slice of bread. Cool idea though.

In the centre of the circle, 6000 years ago is the Proto-Indo-European language, developing over millenniums into the languages of today - placed at the border of the circle. Each color of the circle represents a subcategory of the family of Indo-European languages - dark blue = Germanic, green = Celtic, yellow= Romance, pink = Greek, brown = Balkan, orange = Anatolian, red = IndoIranian, purple = Tocharian, sky blue = Slavic group and turquoise = Baltic. This is a collection of food packages with somewhat unfortunate names. I've tried some of the Swedish ones myself and I still remember how my mom used to bring Finger Marie crackers to the beach when I was a kid. Here's another weird name, what's the deal with this Australian ice cream? Or this company in Vancouver? And what do they do at the 'Kidsexchange' as seen in this blog post? But a good name isn't everything, to sell you might need a good company slogan as well. And remember, it's all about location, location, location.

This video was made by author, software developer, and data magnate (that's his words) Toby Segaran at kiwitobes.com. It shows how Wal-Mart has grown from just one store in Arkansas back in 1962 to cover all of the United States in 2007. By the end of January this year there were 971 Wal-Mart Discount Stores in the US, and 2980 stores in 14 countries outside the US. I've been trying to find similar videos about other companies but haven't found any good ones yet, will post when I find one!

Yesterday Sun Microsystems released the third edition of their open source office suite - OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice was first released in July 2000 and was aimed to reduce the dominant market share, hold by Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is a cross-platform office application suite, meaning it's available for a whole bunch of operating systems including Windows, OS X and Linux. OpenOffice.org includes most of the stuff you find in other office suites e.g. Microsoft Office - but with a sweet exception, it's free! Try the latest version, it will cost you nothing but a little of your time.

This first glimpse seem to full fill all expectations, and I am really tempted to sell my half year old MacBook - just so I can buy this baby. During the event Apple confirmed the rumor about the new MacBook shell being carved out of a solid block of aluminum - as we reported some time ago (New rumors about Apples the 'Brick'). I guess many of you have seen the Web 2.0 video that Kansas State University professor Michael Wesch made and uploaded on YouTube just before Super Bowl in 2007. That short video was a major Internet phenomenon and made it to the top on sites such as Digg and Technorati. This is a photo taken from the Burj Dubai tower, still under construction in Dubai. Some sick architecture already built in this ever changing city includes the Burj Al Arab, or the Tower of the Arabs in English. The Dubai coastline isn't all that bad either, with the Palm Trilogy, the awsome island representation of the World and the Dubai Waterfront welcoming seabourn visitors. I have just got to go there soon, looks too cool to miss.

This simulation by Zurich University of Applied Sciences - or simply Zhaw - shows the commercial flights of the world, seen over 24 hours. You can see how flights leave America as morning is coming to Europe and how Europe then becomes the center of air travel during the European daytime hours, and then it shifts right back again as the night falls over the EU. This shows quite clearly how we're becoming less of a bunch of countries and more of a global community, which is kinda cool.

GeoEye-1 is a unique satellite in that it is commercial - not military - and created to deliver super high-resolution images of the earth. It was sponsored by Google, giving the search engine company exclusive rights to the imagery. In other words, soon you'll probably be able to get fresh high-res images in Google Earth from GeoEye-1. This is an article in yesterdays New York Times about a software program that was developed in Israel. What they did was to have 68 Israeli and German men and women look at photographs of white people, to try to figure out what is attractive. So now this software is able to alter a photo that you feed it with, so that the person on the photo looks the best he or she could, without making alterations that makes you unable to recognize the person. They say this photo of James Franco looks so much like the original because he already is good looking. But then I can't understand why there is so little difference between these two photos of Woody Allen. Kinda cool software though, would be fun to try it out on your friends.

I'm really in to Danish film for the moment, so here is another one (posted this two weeks ago). If you're Scandinavian, chances are pretty big you've seen this movie, but to you other guys this might be news. Doesn't matter really, because this is a really good movie that's worth watching a second time. Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen - seen in Casino Royale - plays Jacob Pederson, a guy working at an orphanage in India that gets sent home to Copenhagen, where he receives some life altering news. This drama by Susanne Bier was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2007.

We Feel Fine is a pretty cool project from the creator of Universe.org, that I mentioned in an earlier post. This site constantly collects feelings from weblogs all around the world. It does this by searching for phrases like "I feel" or "We feel" and so on, in the weblogs. Then it saves the sentence containing the feeling, along with other info that it was able to collect, like the persons name, geograpical location, age etc. The feelings is then displayed in a way that makes you able to play around with them, get statistics and see pictures associated with feelings. Really sweet.

The Man from Earth is a science fiction drama that came out in late 2007, and tells the story about a college professor claiming to be an immortal. Alot of the movie circles around professor John Oldman (played by David Lee Smith) trying to convince his colleagues about his extraordinary ability. This is alot more of a drama piece than it is a sci-fi epic, and is a great way to kick back on a sunday evening in the couch.
