We Lost Our Gold: A Real-Life Treasure Hunt

Treasure Hunt? Puppets? Pirates? Ninja?? What's Going On Here?

welostourgold.com is a treasure map. There is a wooden chest buried somewhere within the five boroughs of New York City, and it is filled with $10,000 in U.S. currency. If you want it, you can decode the videos presented on this website. If you find it, it's all yours.

Also, it was buried by pirates...who happen to be puppets...one of which is a ninja.

If you're confused, you'd better shake it off and start concentrating. We've made eight videos. Hidden throughout all of the videos are clues you'll need to find the location of the "Pirates' Gold". The videos will be unlocked one by one, starting August 1st, 2010.

This is not a contest. We don't want your e-mail address. There's no purchase necessary—no list to sign up for. The sole purpose of this website is to exist only as a map to ten thousand dollars.

There is a real buried treasure under New York City. Good hunting, enjoy the videos—and by the way...this is for real.

Oh, and PLEASE don't just start digging all over NYC. We love this city, and don't want unnecessary holes popping up everywhere. When you've found the treasure, you'll know it.

Is this for real?

Yes, absolutely. This is not a joke or a stunt.

Prove it.

Well, there’s the rub. We can’t show footage of the chest going into the ground; it might give something away. However…if you stick around, and look hard, we promise that you will see each and every one of the ten thousand dollar coins in our videos. That’s the best we can do.

Is the treasure real gold?

Well…no. The treasure is 10,000 US mint one-dollar coins. Most of them are Sacagawea dollars, or the new Presidential one-dollar coins…the ‘John Quincy Adams’ one is hands down our favorite. So they are gold-colored!!! But ‘actual gold,’ no. Actual currency? Absolutely.

Why would you do this?

We wanted to create a real treasure hunt. If you’re reading this, you’ve found the map, and there’s a chest of ‘gold’ waiting to be found. We’ve always wanted to experience the excitement of searching for pirate treasure, so we decided to give that feeling to everyone else.

Why do you have a ninja?

The real question is why don’t you have a ninja?

NOTHING. This is not a contest. Please don’t send us your personal information. We don’t want your email. There is no list to sign up for. We just want you to enjoy the videos. They contain everything you need to find the chest.

How do I find it?

Jeeze, we just told you. The eight episodes contain every clue you need to find the treasure.

No, it’s really not. We may be stupid enough to bury all our money, but we’re absolutely not stupid enough to encourage people to start digging up Central Park.

Do I have to watch all eight episodes to find the treasure? I think I already know where it is!

You really need to watch all eight episodes to know where the treasure chest is. It is VERY unlikely someone would find it without watching each of the eight episodes.

Do I need to physically go and get the treasure chest myself?

Yup. Remember, this isn't a contest; we just lost our gold. It doesn't belong to us anymore. Think of it like finding a dollar bill; someone lost it, and since you've found it, it's yours. It's like that, except it is a dollar coin. And there are 10,000 of them.

People be talkin' about clues clues clues! Oh, I don't understand any of it. Seems like everything I says is a clue, and I don't even know what I said!

For example, I just said the word "clues" 3 times. Is that a clue? And I notice there's 3 Ws in WWW. And there's now an EPISODE 3!

Did you leave tangible, physical clues around the city? What am I looking for?

You're looking for the treasure chest. That's it. All the clues you need are found on the welostourgold website. Nowhere else. We did not leave any physical clues for you to find.

You might stumble across parchment from Mulligan advertising the site, or chest itself. Those are the only things we've physically hidden.
