The oceans have become much noisier over the last century because of shipping. We know whales can cope with the din to some extent by calling more loudly, but we have no idea if they are stressed by noise.

Anonymous strikes Syrian President Bashar Assad; emails hacked, leaked

Anonymous hacks and leaks email from the mail server of the Syrian Ministry of Presidential Affairs; Operation Syria (#OpSyria) continues.

On Monday, Anonymous hacktivists released hundreds of emails from Syrian President Bashar Assad’s office. Haaretz reports 78 inboxes of Assad’s aides and advisers were hacked, including the Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Fadlallah Azzam, and Assad’s media adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban.

Foreign Policy reports that one email, from U.N.-based press aide Sheherazad Jaafari to Damascus-based press aide Luna Chebel, was particularly interesting. It advises the presidential office on how to prepare the Syrian leader for his December 2011 interview with Barbara Walters. In that interview, Assad claimed the Syrian government was not killing its people.

“We don’t kill our people,” Assad told ABC “No government in the world kills its people, unless it’s led by a crazy person.”

By all accounts, Assad is currently killing his own people in a vicious and bloody crack down.

On a more humorous note, basic computer security measures in Assad’s office are apparently non-existent. According to reports, many of the high level government email accounts used the password “12345.”
