On a historical note, “We Own This Town” comes from the Ole Mossy Face song “Calls & Walls”. It has a small and intimate vibe but still carefully pored over for additional, subtle, textures - like a faint drum beat or layered, meandering, guitars.

It’s not filled with all-out rockers or self-indulgent acoustic ballads. It finds itself in that sweet spot between the two. It’s an altogether interesting and engaging listen with plenty of soft pop sensibilities that doesn’t blast away, vying for your attention.

Shanshala - Point NemoThe opening notes of the Point Nemo EP...

Shanshala - Point Nemo

The opening notes of the Point Nemo EP from Shanshala are a deceptive representation of the two full songs that make up the release. A gently strumming acoustic guitar accompanied by a warm organ might fool your brain into thinking you’re in for some Lightning 100-esque Adult Contemporary but the vocals introduce themselves with a slight warble that tells you otherwise.

There’s something nostalgically familiar about these two songs that harkens back to late 90′s era rockers that eschewed the Grunge sound and embraced more Classic Rock tenants. While more of a single than an EP, it still serves as a nice jumping off point to a slew of additional recordings over on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

Billy Anderson - Billy Again LatelyA lifetime could be spent...

Billy Anderson - Billy Again Lately

A lifetime could be spent documenting the work of R. Stevie Moore. Part of that undertaking would be shining a light on many of the 40 years worth of collaborations Moore has given the world. One such frequent collaborator is Billy Anderson, reportedly Moore’s best friend since the late 60′s and, from the sounds of it, a fitting partner.

Billy Again Lately was recorded released in late 1977 and features a number of lo-fi original pop gems that you’d expect from the frantic brain of R. Stevie Moore and some bombastic covers, such as the satisfyingly intense version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” As you’d hope, it runs a wide gamut of styles but somehow manages to feel like a cohesively good time.

Supposedly Anderson now resides in Nashville (if Bandcamp profiles are to be trusted) and I can only hope that leds to more collaborations.

The Pills - Lost TapeThere’s something completely endearing...

The Pills - Lost Tape

There’s something completely endearing about listening to a band that wears their influences brightly on their sleeve. Assuming you also enjoy those influences, it creates an instant common ground. The Explorer’s Club channels The Beach Boys every bit as much as Bully channels Grunge. They do it with their own twist and expertise but, regardless, the root influence is still there.

Such is the case with The Pills Lost Tape, a presumably older recording that they’ve just recently decided to surface. The general style is psych rock but they’re clearly pulling from the same bag of tricks Tame Impala draws from. It’s not derivative or overdone but it seems safe to call them fans of Kevin Parker’s infamous band.

DEDSA “Lighter Click”The official music video for...

DEDSA “Lighter Click”

The official music video for DEDSA’s “Lighter Click” has a visual aesthetic that you would typically associate with thrashing metal bands obsessed with wizards, creatures and fantasy tropes of all sorts. Surprisingly, the song is a dance-y number with a slow build into a chaotic explosion of energy.

I’m honestly blown away by the style of this video, the amount of work to create this world and the attention to detail. It’s more akin to Fantastic Planet than it is Heavy Metal but there’s clearly influences coming from all over.

This particular video was released two years ago, so there’s plenty to catch up on with the band. A deep dive is certainly called for after seeing this.

Volume 99

Welcome to 2018! While an astronomer might be quick to point out that there is nothing astronomically significant about January 1st, it works quite well as a time to refresh and begin again. A Fresh Start if you will. We’re hurdling into the new year by posting another 25 minutes of great local music, some of which is already available in EP and LP forms and some of which we have to wait a few months to be released in their entirety. Regardless, we’ve got a lot to look forward to this year and Volume 99 is just a taste of it.

They put on a scorching live show.

They released the second full-length record, Floral Canyon, on Dangerbird Records in 2017 and it’s excellent. Do Listen.

They are a funny bunch.

That last point is best exemplified by their antics of their podcast but there’s a quality dose of humor in the bands latest release, a quasi-Christmas song entitled “Baby It’s 2018.” It’s a short and silly treat here at the end of the year.

Smart Objects “The Autumn Man” (Official Video)Back in August we...

Smart Objects “The Autumn Man” (Official Video)

Back in August we shared the first single from Ben Harper’s new project, Smart Objects, “The Autumn Man.” Hopefully it’s been in your rotation since that time because it’s a damn fine piece of pop work.

Since that time, the band has been releasing a series of short films that, once stitched together, serve as the official music video for the track. There’s a clever bit of consistency throughout the pieces but, on the whole, it’s a wildly varied collection of animations. If you’re watching it and find yourself getting bored, just wait 10 seconds and some new and intriguing style will appear.

Rales - “Windsor Pl”2018 is really gearing up to be a...

Rales - “Windsor Pl”

2018 is really gearing up to be a great year of new releases. Like the previously released Journey Into Krautrock and Egyptian Overlord before that, McLeod picks a flavor and dives in deep, embracing the tropes of a particular style but always with his own enjoyable twist. May All Your Post Rock Dreams Come True is, obviously, his version of quiet-to-loud arrangements the likes of Explosions in the Sky, 65daysofstatic and Mogwai (of which there is even a cover). The songs build with tension until releasing into some overtly epic onslaught of sound, best listened to at the highest of volumes.

It’s refreshing for a project to give itself such particular boundaries and still find such successful execution.

Two Chalfonts “Merry Christmas Will Do”I’m all for a maudlin,...

Two Chalfonts “Merry Christmas Will Do”

I’m all for a maudlin, introspective, Christmas tune but sometimes it’s nice to get an infusion of upbeat pop-rock for the holiday season. I can only hope this means a full-length lies in wait for us in 2018.

Tristen “Crying on Christmas Day”Great to see Tristen keeping...

Tristen “Crying on Christmas Day”

Great to see Tristen keeping with her holiday tradition of releasing a new song in December. This years offering, “Crying on Christmas Day”, is a somber number but well suited for a time of year where we reflect. This pushes melancholy to its limits, in the most pleasingly moving of ways.

All purchases of the track go to Doctors Without Borders, so you can do some good this Christmas with very little effort.

Volume 98December is, historically, a time for reflecting on the...

Volume 98

December is, historically, a time for reflecting on the year’s previous releases - a worthy practice if ever there was one. However, there’s still plenty of great recent releases that haven’t been highlighted on our show and that just simply will not stand. If the WOTT Music podcast is a time capsule of the great music our city has to offer, we’re going to forge ahead with documenting those releases. There may be a Best Of episode in our future but until 2017 has completely run out of steam, we’re going to keep highlighting newness.

They’ve released albums from locals such as Palm Spring and Strange Æons but their latest release compiles songs from artists across the country to create a surprisingly pleasing, far-out Christmas album.

Typically, Vaporwave and Christmas would seem to be two ideas that would never work well together but this comp proves that theory 100% incorrect. Listening to “All I Want For Christmas Is You” or “The Scut Farkis Affair” it’s clear that there’s room for plenty of new styles in the Christmas genre.

While many of these artists are not Nashville based, Contemporary Tapes is from our fine city and serves as the mastermind behind bringing this all together. I applaud them for pulling it off.

Premiere: Λ°C - “R&R”

Hear the track on Soundcloud or Spotify.

Very pleased to premiere the latest single from Λ°C, aka Lambda Celsius, aka AC Carter. The title, “R&R”, usually evokes the phrase “Rest and Relaxation” but here the refrain is “Rhythm and Rhyme” - a lament about the stubbornness of the world around us and the difficulties of relationships.

Overall, the the electronic track twinkles with keyboard flourishes and a dancefloor beat calling back to the gothic vibes of 80′s predecessors, with the lyrical content digging deeper into the complexities of modern day.

It’s also being released on the same day as Patti Smith’s Horses album, back in 1975. This is no accident, as Λ°C draws inspiration and motivation from the likes of Smith and other empowered female musicians.

Tape Deck Mountain - Echo Chamber BluesAs everyone reflects on...

Tape Deck Mountain - Echo Chamber Blues

As everyone reflects on the Best of 2017, there’s plenty of good news about the future - particularly in regards to 2018 releases. Tape Deck Mountain just announced their next full-length, Echo Chamber Blues, will be released February 23rd and they’re taking pre-orders for the limited edition vinyl now.

If you aren’t familiar with the Nashville by way of New York by way of San Diego outfit, you may be missing out on some of the best shoegaze out there. I’ll save the full review for when the album is officially released but if you like big, reverb-y guitars, thick bass lines, foreboding samples and plenty of atmosphere, this will absolutely not disappoint.

Lionlimb - Tape RecorderOne of my favorite releases of 2016 was...

Lionlimb - Tape Recorder

One of my favorite releases of 2016 was the oft-overlooked debut from Lionlimb, Shoo. The Elliott Smith-esque vocals and sublime production was always enjoyable. So, I’m excited to see that 2018 will see the second official release from the band in the form of the Tape Recorder EP. From the sound of the first available track, “Maria”, the band is continuing with their previous sound but layering in a lot more instrumentation and even some strings to accent where necessary. Definitely one for the wishlist.
