Each year in Canada, billions of dollars in assets are transferred at death. If you plan to transfer all or some of your assets to your heirs, you want to make sure your money goes to the people you selected in the manner you intended. Unfortunately, wealth transfers don’t always occur as planned. Outlined below are some common mistakes people make when trying to transfer wealth.

FaIling to have a will

A basic and all too common mistake is failing to have a will. A will communicates your intentions and allows you – and not the government – to determine how your assets will be distributed upon your death. Having a will facilitates the administration of your estate and can help you save taxes. It also allows you to choose the executor of your estate ant the guardian(s) of your children.

Treating equal beneficiaries unequally

Often, when splitting assets, the intention is to divide them equally among beneficiaries- for example, equally among three children. However, if you fail to take into account the tax consequences, the wealth transfer may not be equal. Take a simple example in which you have three assets: a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), a home and a non-registered mutual fund portfolio. Each asset is worth $1 million. You name your first child as beneficiary of you RRSP, and in your will you leave the house to your second child and the mutual funds to your third child. You think you are leaving $1 million to each child, but the reality is that the third child, who is receiving the mutual funds under the will, is going to have his or her share reduced by any tax your estate pays on the RRSP and the mutual funds. Assuming a 40 percent effective tax rate, your estate will pay $400,000 in taxes on the RRSP, in addition to any potential taxes on the deemed disposition of the mutual funds, which we’ll assume are $100,000. As a result, the third child will be left with $500,000- significantly less than the $1 million the first and second child each received, and not what you had intended.

Spousal issues

Another example of failing to consider the tax implication often involves second marriages or separated and estranged spouses. For example, let’s say you name your spouse as the beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF to provide for him or her after your death, and you name your children (perhaps form a previous marriage) as beneficiaries under your will to inherit the rest of your estate. You assume that your spouse will roll over your RRSP or RRIF to his of her own RRSP or RRIF, and pay tax on any withdrawals. But what if your spouse doesn’t do this? Instead, he or she just takes the cash. Well, your estate will be responsible for any taxes on the RRSP of RRIF, which effectively means that money comes out of your children’s inheritance. Under These circumstances, it is possible that the legal representative of the estate to make a unilateral election to deduct the amount paid form the RRSP or RRIF in the estate. This effectively transfers the income inclusion to the surviving spouse. Alternatively, if you have a RRIF, consider naming your spouse as successor annuitant or Joint Life. This will automatically transfer the RRIF to your spouse on a tax deferred basis.

Minor beneficiaries

It is important to consider the age of the individual you name as beneficiaries. Remember that generally death benefits cannot be paid directly to minors, so if you name a child as beneficiary the funds often have to be paid into court or to the Public Trustee. In addition, once a minor reaches the age of majority, he or she will be entitled to the funds, without any restrictions.

If you want the death benefit to go to a minor, it is recommended that you establish a trust to receive the funds on behalf of the minor. The terms of the trust can set out how you want the funds to be invested and when payments are to be made for the benefit of a minor. If done properly, the trust could qualify as a testamentary trust and benefit from being taxed at the graduated tax Rates.

Failing to name a beneficiary on insurance polices and contracts

Unless there is a specific reason for having assets flow through your estate, such as to make use of tax losses or deductions or to apply any special instructions contained in the will, it may be a better idea to name a beneficiary directly on an insurance contract where possible. If your will is submitted for probate, it becomes a matter of public record, available for anyone to view. This may delay the distribution of your estate by weeks months or even years if your will is challenged.

When a beneficiary other that your estate is named on an insurance policy or investment contract (such as a segregated fund contract), the death benefit bypasses your estate and therefore avoids probate fees (and potentially other estate administration fees). The proceeds are paid directly to the beneficiary, usually within two weeks of receiving all necessary documents. By avoiding your estate, the death benefit may also avoid claims by creditors of the estate and challenges to the validity of the will.

Unused charitable donations

If you are planning on making a significant charitable donation at death, steps should be taken to ensure that your estate will be able to use the entire donation receipt. While the limit for claiming donation receipts at death is 100 percent of net income in the year of death and the year prior to death, it is still possible for there to be unused receipts. Individuals making extremely large donations relative to their annual income, who die early in the calendar year of who name a charity as beneficiary of their non-registered investment or life insurance policy nave a greater risk of having unused charitable tax credits. Naming a charity as a beneficiary of an RRSP or RRIF is usually not a problem because charitable receipts van be used to offset the tax on the income form the RRSP or RRIF. If you have a spouse with sufficient income, he or she could also claim any unused charitable receipts for the next five years.

If you are concerned that you may have unused charitable receipts at death, consider making some charitable donations during your lifetime and reduce your taxes payable now.

As you can see, there are many reasons why it is important to plan for a wealth transfer if you don’t have a will, arrange for your lawyer to prepare one. Review your will and beneficiary designations regularly, particularly after a life-changing event, to ensure they still reflect your wishes – and amend or update them as necessary. In addition, meet with your advisor to discuss your wishes for wealth transfer. He or she will be able to help ensure that your assets are distributed as you wish.

Your parents told you, when you were just a kid, that hard work was the road to success. But why is this world filled with people that get so much with the minimum effort? Is there a better way?

You don’t have to sweat a lot to achieve great things; you need to be smart. Here is a secret you will fall in love with. When you trade currencies, for a living, the less you work the more money you will make. Traders with the biggest gains only trade once a day, and sometimes once a week.

1st.- Don’t work for money; make your money work for you.

If you work for money your earnings will always be restricted by the amount of labor you can realize, no matter how big your paycheck is. On the other hand, if you make your money work hard your income potential has no limit. You will have earnings while you are sleeping or on a vacation.

I know what you are thinking: “Rich people can make their money work for them, but what about the rest of us?” You don’t need to be Bill Gates to trade the Forex market. One of the main advantages of currency trading is the minimal capital needed to open and fund your account. You might be able to start trading with only $10 dollars.

And…

You should never underestimate the power of compound interest when making your investing decisions. Small gains tend to add up very quickly. If you invest your money in a responsible disciplined manner in no time you are going to have a small fortune.

3rd.- You can’t think of the Forex market as a 9:00 to 5:00 job

When you go to a regular job you need to do some things during the day, you need to get busy. On the other hand, the currency market has its own timing. You should only take positions when there is profit to be made.You can’t think of the currency market as a regular 9:00 to 5:00 job, or you will lose. Being in front of the computer won’t influence the market moves, it will only induce you to over-trade. I know it sounds crazy but, when trading, you should work hard on your ability to do nothing, it is the difference between profit and loss.

4th.- You can automate your trades.

One of the beauties of currency trading is that you can manage your trades in 30min or less. You set your trades with their stop-loss orders and profit targets, then turn off your computer and go do something else. Most part of the trading process can be automated.

After all the market doesn’t move just because you watch it, remember it has its own timing.

The currency market gives me not only the money to sustain myself, but the time to enjoy my life. I don’t consider it a job because it only takes me 30 minutes once a week to manage my trades. Some other very profitable systems can be traded checking your positions once a day.

Are Intraday Trading Strategies Right For You?

There are many that love the action of a quick day trade and are going to require great intraday trading strategies. Though we have come to associate trading with elite investment banks and opaque commodity houses, there are still individuals who seek to make a living through intraday trading. What is day trading? Day trading is a term given to individuals who buy financial instruments ranging from stocks and options to complex derivatives and simple commodities, and complete the purchase and sale of said instruments before the market closes, thus making them intraday traders. Day traders generally operate on a short-term basis, looking to profit from movements in price of a security. This article will cover some intraday trading strategies that elite traders employ.

Technical analysis is the key to success, and it is usually the best of all intraday trading strategies. Day traders take advantage of automatic trading (aka algorithmic trading) which is the use of electronic platforms to execute high frequency trading within a short amount of time. Automatic trading can lead to large intraday market movements. That is where traders can profit: when markets move, whether up or down, profits can be made.

There is a solid set of day trading rules that day traders should also abide to:

Have an entry price, an exit price and an escape price. These are known as the three E’s. Set your limits and stick to them, do not allow emotion into the equation, if a price dips below your preset limits, time to take the loss. If a price surges ahead, cut your profits there and exit from your position. Optimism can take you to the cleaners.
Avoid trading on margin. Sure, we have all seen the success of highly leveraged deals on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, but day traders do not have a cushy back office to take care of the losses. One wrong move and creditors will be at your door for the rest of your life.
Never act on tips from uninformed sources. Although we would all like to be the next Gordon Gekko, insider information rarely leaks out to day traders. Do not expect to gain an edge from a hot stop tip from bar buddy. Usually these rumors have been priced in.
Be willing to lose. Anyone can handle of their portfolio moving up, but only seasoned day traders can shore their positions even after a large loss. Be careful if you are waiting for an upswing, you may wind up at the bottom of the lake.

Day traders operate on technical analysis, so what are some intraday trading strategies you can employ now?

Scalping – Scalping is the immediate exit out of position almost as soon as the trade becomes profitable. These usually result in smaller margins. It uses the momentum and buying orders coming in to grab a quick gain, with a possibility that it trades lower, but it is unlikely. This strategy can be dangerous if you do not also exit in a short time period if the trade goes against you.
Fading – Fading is shorting securities after a recent surge, this anticipates pricing corrections and assume the position has been overbought.
Daily Pivots – Daily Pivots involves watching the price and trying to catch it at its lowest point while selling it at its highest point in the day. Traders can thumb through historical prices to better position themselves at the trough and peak of the pricing.
Momentum – Momentum involves trading on a public release of information. Information generally draws volume and price fluctuations will be more pronounced. Intraday traders will try to ride the movement and exit as soon as volume dies down.

Money Management Strategies Of Day Trading

The most important of the trading strategies of any kind is how you are going to manage the trade to prevent losses and lock in gains. You may look at ratios of target price to stop prices so that you plan to sell at a 6% gain or -2% (2% loss) for example.

I look at “time stops” and list the following as “days” as it may apply to swing trades, but when adjusting for intraday trading strategies, you merely are going to use 5 units of time intervals, whether that be a 15 minute chart (3 15 minute periods or 35 minutes) or 1 minute chart (5 intervals= 5 minutes). Additionally the point is not to give you the exact day you should use but an example of what one may consider.

I believe in using TIME stops since a stock trade is a success if it performs well in a limited period of time. If you take a significantly long amount of time in a trade, it requires larger results to provide the same annualized rate of return. I have no problem with turning a intraday trade into a swing trade, and then swing trade into a position trade as long as it is performing. I like the prospects of a 5 day stop.
A Time stop is based upon qualifications of a stock within a set amount period of time.

A 5 day time stop can for example be either where you buy a stock and the moment it hasn’t made a new high within the last 5 days, the trade is over, and you either exit immediately or use some signal such as selling the next overbought signal or trending signal, (perhaps on a shorter time period). That version seeks to only continue holding if it makes new highs and continues doing so without allowing much opportunity for anything else. This is ideal for momentum stocks.

A version of the 5 day time stop that seeks to keep watch on the losses a bit tighter instead, but still trails them higher, and doesn’t mind a stock trading sideways as long as support is not broken may instead say, as long as a stock has not traded below it’s most recent lowest low within the last 5 days, you are going to hold it. This is similar to watching a particular moving average and selling on a move below it such as a 5 day moving average, only a big gain will skew a 5 day moving average, but also allow you to lock in the gains sooner, where a 5 day low stop will keep you from selling out on a volitle move up followed by a shakeout and then a move higher. A combination of both must use different time intervals. For example, you might say you want to give stock more flexibility on how much time it has to gain, but you are more strict on the downside. If this is the case, you might go with a new high on 15 day basis to a 5 day basis for the new lows. In other words, you look at a stock’s 5 day low and the moment it is breached, you sell it, while you also are watchig to make sure a stock at least makes a new high in the last 15 days. You may also have a market based trigger such as if the 5 day moving average in the S&P index dips below the 20 day, you exit all your trades.
You can apply an intraday trade such as using a 5 minute intervale instead of 5 day, or 5 5 minute candles or bars (or 15 mnutes). The time may vary. So you will have to identify what you believe works best for the particular trade. One way may be to look at the particular stock and adjust it based on the stock’s history. For example, if a stock has a tendency to trade down to the 5-7 day low before a big run up, you may want to give 8-10 days or more. If a stock tends to consolidate and work sideways without making new relative highs for awhile before it trades much higher, you may want to expand the number of days before you sell out on stock.

There are two final version of the 5 day time stop. One is that you have specific resistance or support zones. In order to not get shaken out due to volatility, you must see 5 candles or bars on some interval below that before you get stopped out, and you might need to see that before you make a purchase above resistance.The other is similar, but instead it isadding a bit more time before you sell. For example, your stop is breached. Now if your stop is on the downside rather than a target to the upside, an oversold bounce can still occur. A stock may breakdown and then bounce higher to overbought before plummeting. To avoid selling at a lower point everytime you might give the stock 5 days before you sell. If you do this, you probeabbly want a tenantive stop below first support but then a hard stop under it or another kind of stop. The idea is that if the stock doesn’t bounce very quickly and continues to make new lows, you may not be very forgiving. So if your stop is $100 initially, you might Give a stock until $99 to bounce. If it stays above $99 you sell in 5 days regardless, but if it breaks below, you sell immediately.

Conditional sells are important. You may sell a fraction of your sales at a given target price, but you may want to give 5 more days before selling higher. If a stock moves a certain amount such as 5% or higher in 3 days, you may give a full 10 days before you sell, unless another stop is breached such as making a new 5 day low and holding for 15 minutes below that mark or whatever.

Any trading method can work, but you have to put the odds in your favor somehow. If for example you do not, and you say you take profits every small % amount higher without a plan if things go against you and thus you fail to sell out the stock goes much lower, you are very likely to never end up ahead. Even if you win a high percentage of the time (minus commission which will be very high if you trade like that), eventually you will land in a stock that goes to zero, and wipe out all of your gains. It doesn’t really matter how high your upside is or downside, as long as proportionally they make sense, and you give enough time for it to realistically get to those targets. Any intraday strategy is going to occur much more quickly, and action si going to have to take place often. The trap is overtrading without having a method of having upside outweigh downside. So you should look for systems that have an upside of 3 times the downside for example, and you should track the percentage of times that you hit the upside target or higher and percentage that you hit your sell points and make sure that the method is profitable. Only then can you consider different securities or trading methodologies.

Cover ratio is the minimum amount that must be available in the account. If the cover ratio in the account is below the amount of securities that the investors have provided then the client will receive margin call and investor will have to deposit will have to add more money in the account to make the balance in the account. In this case, the difference between the value of the securities and the loan will be the amount of one’s own cash used. The difference has to stay above minimum margin requirement. One of the reasons why the difference has to stay above the minimum margin requirement is to protect the investors against the fall in the value of securities to the point that investors can no longer cover the loan amount.

The company provides two different margin accounts which are known as N100 and K75.

What would it take to make millions of dollars by utilizing the stock market? The answer is not really all that simple. Each week I will be adding the stock investments I recommend to my own portfolio. However, “just so you know” as modern mobile phone parlance goes, I will not until after the date of publication have any holding in those I select.

This is not to suggest that my purchases are always as inherently safe as I expect these to turn out to be since in other dealings I am prepared to accept a higher risk for short term gains. With my F.O.G. selections I try not to do so though it’s often difficult when I find something I really like. So instead of using the charts, the fundamentals or the p/e ratios, I apply my own tests.

I am not for one moment suggesting that these stocks will never as Shakespeare put it “suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune”. If any financial adviser tells you otherwise, beat a hasty retreat; you are in the hands of either a megalomaniac or a crook. Nowadays in stock investing, uncertainty is the only sure thing. Most of us grew up with parents who used expressions such as “safe as houses!” or “as good as money in the bank!” It’s some time now since I last heard them. Obviously for good reason; we’ve had the three F’s (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and foreclosures) which put an end to the former and countless bank failures and bailouts to the latter. The notions of a capital growth in the value of your home and a realistic rate of interest on your bank savings are now nothing more than a sick joke.

These days it’s very difficult to see further than the end of the street in investment terms and so I have laid down certain criteria which my stock should conform to. If it does not I reject it for the purposes of F.O.G though I may still dabble given the right fundamentals in my general portfolio business. So which tests does my would be F.O.G stock have to pass?

First and above and beyond all, I want to know my corporations have a social conscience. To have that attribute is good for business right now and I believe into the future it will be increasingly so. I spent many years in England in the 80′s and 90′s and remember very well the Co-operative Bank, a mutual with three hundred branches, more commonly in the north of that country since it was formed in Rochdale Lancashire, at the end of the nineteenth century. During the time I was there and ever since so far as I am aware, the bank has stressed that it conducts its business on a strictly “ethical” basis by which description it means in practice it will not carry out banking for, or give loans to, or invest in any company it feels is not ethical. These include tobacco companies for example though of course the businesses those companies run are perfectly legal. I recall then that the bank’s principles were considered oddball in some respects, a bit divorced from practical reality, maybe something freshers at university might demonstrate as being in favour of. Now I believe it’s right on the nail.

The bank I refer to does not have branches in the USA and so should not be confused with the bank of a similar name which failed in recent years. As a matter of record it is one of the few UK banks which does not pay executive bonuses and did not need a bailout during the bleak days of 2008 and 2009, though I am not suggesting this was as a result of their ethical investment policy. Yet maybe in some small way it was, since perhaps this bank always took a more conservative approach due in part to its humble beginnings.
