I have had this for over a year now (xmas gift in '08) and absolutely love it. I live in Denver, and I have had no problems with the temperature sensor with temperatures ranging from -10F to 100F. One feature that this product has that others may not (based on pictures I have seen) is that the temperature sensor for outside has a small display of the temperature and humidity on the sensor itself (it alternates displaying temp and humidity every 2 seconds or so). That's a nice feature to have when you are outside and want to check the temp. The humidity sensor is also very nice to have in the dry climate here in Denver, but I'm sure it's useful in other more humid climates (e.g. East Coast) as well.

I haven't had to change any batteries in either the oustside sensor or the inside base in the 13 months I have been using it.

I like this product so much I bought it as a an xmas gift for my parents this year.

This is a great idea for a product, but this one is poorly thought out, poorly done and poorly supported.

The first thing I discovered was that it's annoying that the temperature scrolls along the bottom, so that you have to wait for it. That should be front and centre, and visible all the time. You *could* pick the thing up and locate a button on the back and press it to start the scrolling temperature---if you can figure out which button it is. I read the instructions and I still can't remember what they all do. I think you have to hold down the "+" sign to connect to the USB port. Not very well designed.

Secondly, I lose the connection to the USB port every couple days or so. I have to run up to the computer and hit "Reset" whenever this happens. Support hasn't been able to solve this problem for me. I'm sure it's an unacknowledged bug in their product.

Thirdly, the forecast is just plain wrong much of the time. We had a cold snap where the temperature was -30 for about a week---and the 2-4 day forecast consistently showed a high of exactly freezing. Customer support told me to keep a log of all the predicted temperatures vs. the actual ones and send them a report. Uh, yeah, no thanks.

Fourthly, support seems to be overwhelmed with problems. It takes them forever to respond to questions, and when they do respond they're copying-and-pasting lists of time-wasting questions like "what brand of battery are you using?" and "who is your ISP?".

This was a waste of $100. I plan to throw this in the garbage and buy something else.

Actual rating is ONE STAR. The temperature probes work at least, even if they don't have much range.

This is my fourth wireless remote rain gauge, and my second with a wireless remote temperature sensor. I bought this unit after owning Oregon Scientific units that failed quickly. This unit doesn't have the 300 foot range of the Oregon Sci unit's rain sensor, although both claimed to have a 100 foot range for the temperature gauge. The Oregon Sci unit has a large external antenna which swivels; the Taylor unit only has a wire laid around the interior of the catch unit, although there is a bracket molded into the sending unit which seems to be for a cell-phone type antenna.

I put the display in the same kitchen location as the Oregon Sci unit's display and could not get a signal from either sensor. I moved the display much closer to the rain gauge into my home office and still couldn't pick up the temperature sensor's signal but the rain gauge began to work.

Finally, I moved the display/receiver unit into my living room, higher up and above our big-screen TV. The heat from the TV raises the interior temperature figure, but I can live with that because now it picks up from both sensors. Maximum range in my house? About 80 feet for the rain gauge, 40 feet for the temperature sensor.

The rain collector/measuring unit interior works looked remarkably like the guts of the Oregon Sci units that failed after a year or so, which gave me a bad feeling and may cause me to modify this review in the future. It's slightly easier to change batteries on the rain sensor of the Taylor vs. the Oregon Sci and the larger collection area seems to give greater sensitivity to the amount of rain falling; it shows results sooner than the Oregon Sci.

Two things about this unit I don't like (other than the abysmal range) are: 1.) It clears the total rainfall amount figure at midnight on Saturday, starting the "weekly rainfall" total over again at 12:01 AM Sunday morning, and 2.) it does not keep a year-to-date rainfall total like the Oregon Sci unit.

If this unit shows better reliability and life than the Oregon Sci unit I can live with it; but I won't like its poor range and goofy totaling scheme. Only time will tell.

One thing I DO like about the unit is that is simple to change the date/time with this unit because it has three large button on top which are easy to reach. They are labeled "Mode," "+", and "-". It's so simple, even a caveman can do it ...

UPDATE: The rating ought to now read One Star, but I can't change it; Amazon won't let me alter my original entry, which seems unfair.

We found, to our absolute surprise, that this Made-in-China unit actually stops working when it gets wet. Not the outside temperature probe -- we could live with that. No; the rain gauge loses its mind and "forgets" both the week-to-date amount and the Today's amount. That would seem to be a vital item to show when it's advertised as being designed to show how much rain has fallen.

It failed the first time when we had a relatively heavy rain; about .5" in 45 minutes. It dried out and began working after a day or so. The second time it didn't fail, but there was only a light drizzle/mist that barely registered on the rainfall display; .03". The third (and last) time it failed it crashed under a day-long drizzle that accumulated .17" in the 14 hours since it reset itself at midnight. As soon as I can find a suitable replacement I'm scrapping this piece of Oriental, um, junk. (Another prot to bring Amerika to her knees?)

My own works pretty well except for the outside thermometer.

The initial problem was getting the damn clock to tune into Fort Collins and get the atomic signals -- I'm up against the Catalina Mountains in Tucson and that seems to block the signals. Finally, after taking the clock outside the house and laying it *flat* on the ground *overnight* I can get the settings. Took a while to figure this out, however.

The next problem is trying to push the various buttons to get the various settings showing on the face -- the buttons were designed by an imbecile. Also the manual was written by his cretinous brother.

Once I got all *that* set up it was fine for about, what?, six months. Then the outside temp. sensor stopped working. Nothing I did can get it working again. But, unlike the two people who wrote earlier reviews, I was too smart to waste $12.50 on ordering a replacement. I figured that it probably wouldn't work anyway.

The Oregon Scientific UVN800 ultraviolet index sensor was amongst the first things I bought after having purchased their Oregon Scientific WMR100 Professional Wireless Weather Station. Unfortunately, this device leaves a bit to be desired.

First of all, this thing is quite expensive for what it does... it's a glorified light sensor. It simply detects the amount of UV light from the sun and sends the result as an integer estimate to the main console. It's also a bit odd why Oregon Scientific didn't just include this device with the weather station in the first place, instead of leaving you with missing functionality right out of the box. That being said, after setting up my weather station I soon found it to be a necessary purchase in order to complete the package. After the pain of spending more cash was aside, it was relatively easy to install the batteries and mount the UV sensor to a post using the included bracket (a ground stake is also included for placing in your yard). About every 73 seconds, according to the manual, the UV sensor takes a reading and sends it to the console.

Now for the bad. Like I have found most of Oregon Scientific's weather instruments to be, this UV sensor is not incredibly durable. After having the device for not quite one year, surviving just one mild Washington State summer and winter, the sensor failed. It simply quit sending a reading to the main unit. After a long chat with customer service, we declared it to be dead, and Oregon Scientific sent me a new one (as of three months it is still working). The moral: make sure you keep a keen eye on your weather station's sensors, this one included, and if one seems to be acting up, act immediately while they are still under warranty.

One thing I must add, slightly unrelated to the UV sensor, is that Oregon Scientific's manuals are a bit sparse and contradictory. For example, the manual for this device tells you to mount the sensor with a direct view of the sky (makes sense), but further down the boilerplate text explains how you should never allow the sensor to get wet or experience extreme temperatures. A little proof reading would make things a little less confusing. Nonetheless, this sensor is easy to get set up without a manual.

Purchased this thermometer and it worked well for a day. Then segments of the display stopped working (as reported by others). I opened the case (four tiny screws) and discovered a ribbon cable with a dozen (or so) connections to a printed circuit board. Pushing on various connections at the end of the cable would light up the malfunctioning segments but not permanently. Soldering ribbon cable is very tricky (too much heat will melt the cable) and I was unsuccessful at restoring the broken connections. Finally threw the thermometer away and got the Oregon Scientific THT312, which is working great.
