Weaverville North Carolina, just minutes north of Asheville, is growing into an awesome suburb and foodie community. We walked through the town recently and visited these restaurants and local businesses.

1. Maggie B's Wine & Specialty Store - This is THE Wine stop on the northside of town. If we are in the North Asheville or Weaverville area, we love to stop in and check this place out. Lots of wine and snacks, including a beautiful seating area and right in the middle of downtown Weaverville.

2. The Glass Onion - We have not personally eaten here yet, but it is definitely on our bucket list. Several friends said they love the food and atmosphere.

3. Jack of Hearts - This is an "extension" of Jack of the Wood in downtown Asheville and has made a nice splash in the Weaverville community. Great experience every time we have been there, yum food, and lots of local and craft beer on tap!

4. Stoney Knob Cafe - This is the foodie must stop in the Weaverville NC area. Folks drive from Asheville, Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee regularly to eat here.

5. Well Bred Bakery & Cafe - Whether you are looking for desserts, coffees or a light meal, Well Bred is always the perfect choice. A great business meeting spot in the Weaverville area!

6. Blue Mountain Pizza - Awesome food, beer, atmosphere and some bluegrass music. Love coming here for lunch or dinner. Pizza is Yum!

7. Mike's on Main Street - Here is a place to get lunch.. a delicious All American Joint... burger and sandwich shop. Ate here several times and had meetings here too. They have inside seating as well as a private deck in the rear.

8. Athen's Restaurant - This is a Greek spot on the northside of town that cooks lunch and dinner in a less commercialized manner. I have not been here in 2 years, but it is usually full when we pass by.

9. Granny's Kitchen - The BEST Bacon, Egg & Cheese I can find in the area!! This is a small greasy spoon restaurant that serves a great breakfast, lunch and some homemade desserts.

10. Poppy's Kitchen - This place is another greasy spoon diner, but a little more countrified than Granny's. I have eaten here a few times for a quick lunch or breakfast.

11. Weaverville Milling Company - We have eaten here several times and it is a good spot. Most of us enjoy the little "Milling House" experience, food is okay too.

We were the first on the scene of this BMW accident in Weaverville North Carolina on Reems Creek. Mission's MAMA Helicopter raced to the scene, got the victim, and took off. Hopefully he will survive. Reems Creek Fire Department came moments after I called and I grabbed the vid cam when they did.

This is about 5 minutes to the new North Asheville Wal-Mart, and about 2 minutes from the quaint little Town of Weaverville North Carolina. About 12 minutes to Downtown Asheville! Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse in Weaverville is almost complete with Wal-Mart not trailing too far behind. Some of the smaller stores that were to follow are not moving forward as of yet... but they will soon... or someone will! This is such a great location with Madison County, Tennessee, and Asheville so readily accesible. This move will also add to the value of land in North Buncombe and Madison County as well. I just love going to Stoney Knob Cafe in Weaverville North Carolina for Sunday Brunch. Their food is so wonderful, that many can sometimes skip the ride to Asheville and end up winning. Everyone is preparing for the new North Asheville Wal-Mart in Weaverville North Carolina. All of the other local stores (big and small) are planning for the "big boom", and are building, adding onto, or renovating in preparation. Here is the little Ice-Service store, right near the Post Office in Weaverville NC. They have been here for years and plan on the area taking a nice economic turn for the better. North Asheville is about to explode. Like DanBel recently said on a video comment... "HELLO!".

Lake Louise Playground Weaverville NC

Lake Louise is the perfect suburb park, playground, and picnic area. It is about 10 minutes North of Asheville and it is a great asset to the Weaverville community. I know when I stop by, one kid runs to play with the ducks, the teens want to jog around the lake, some of the others jump in one of the playgrounds, while the others run over to the other smaller play area. I like to hang out on the benches meeting some of the great residents here in Weaverville.

Weaverville North Carolina is a strong community with the local Weaverville Police Department backed by the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department, and North Carolina State Troopers. Woodfin is also right next door to Weaverville, so their Police always supports this area as well.

Our Course Is Recognized As A Golfing Jewel Of Western North Carolina

Reems Creek Golf Club in Weaverville, N.C. offers a secluded setting that captures the splendor and rustic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and that has regularly won four stars in Golf Digest's “Places to Play.” Lots of the holes on this par-72 mountain course have elevation changes that test your ability to pick the right club to fit our terrain. You'll also find that most of our par-4s here are almost target holes that require accuracy and strategy. One example of a great placement hole is our 5th. You're hitting downhill on this short par-4 (348 yards from the back and 251 from the front). You'll see a large lake off to the left along the fairway and another one in front of the green. It can be hard to play this hole without crossing water. “It's our signature hole,” said Larry Carter, our director of golf. “It's not a tough hole, but when there's water to cross, it can be interesting.” The 9th hole here is a great par-5 that plays at 532 yards from the back and 455 from the forward tees). “You tee off and hit up to a plateau about 200 yards from the tee box where you'll make your second shot,” Carter said. “Then you hit downhill while trying to avoid the bunkers in front of the green. It's hard to reach the green in two; you really need two good shots to do it.” Our 12th hole (542 yards from the back and 419 from the front) is a par-4 that requires you to hit you ball up to the landing area. “The green slopes from right to left and you may find that your putt here will move very quickly,” Carter said.
On the 16th, a par-4, playing at 358 yards from the back and 268 from the front, has a pond to cross off the tee and a second lake at about 220 yards down the fairway. The fairway is nestled into an area that provides one of most picturesque views up the valley. You'll be making your second shot over the lake to a two-tiered green. You want to hit your drive about 200 to 210 yards to get as close as you can to the second pond. “But if you go too long,” said Carter, “you're in the water.” Our 18th, another great par-5, measuring 522 yards from the back and 456 from the front, can easily be viewed from the clubhouse dining room. So do you best as you putt out to impress the other golfers who are eating lunch and watching you from up above. You'll need to watch out for the lake off to the left as you pitch up to a much higher green or you could become the center of attraction.

Course distances, ratings and slopes: Blue 6,492 yards (71.9/133); White 6,106 (70.2/126); Red 4,605 (68.1/122).

Riddle Law Firm in Weaverville

Norman worked out of his basement for years off of Reems Creek. He does pretty peaceful law, in that he works on real estate transactions with banks, etc. mostly in the Asheville area. I remember a friend of mine got in a conflict and went to see Norman Riddle... and he was like "Wrong Attorney, no litagation here". The Riddle Law Office is now located in the building right across from Ingles Grocery off of the New Stock Rd exit where Weaverville and Woodfin intersect. 828-299-1515.

The Collect, Epistle & Gospel are found on pages 98-99 in the Prayer Book. The Ushers are Cecil Beumer & Winston Pulliam; the Acolyte is Mark Monaghan; the Reader is Kay St. Clair; the Chalice Bearer is Jim Tucker; the Teller is Cecil Beumer.

There will be other Christmas services at All Saints, Mills River/Arden: Christmas Eve 10:30 p.m. and Christmas Day 10:00 a.m. St. Timothy's, Swannanoa will be having a Christmas Day service at 10:30 a.m. So if you can't make the one at St. Matthew's, you should be able to be in Church at one of our other Anglican Churches.

No Thursday Study Groups & Eucharist the next two weeks.

The renovation of the Church moves ahead. I believe all the painting and repair of the exterior will be done by this Sunday. The exterior of the Church is looking wonderful. We are receiving another gift of five thousand dollars for the building fund/renovation work. So that brings us to a total of thirty thousand dollars towards the forty thousand dollar challenge gift. Ten thousand more and we will make that goal and have enough funds to complete phase II & III of the renovation.

Morning Traffic on Reems Creek in Weaverville NC

Just a quick picture showing the traffic waiting to get off of Reems Creek Road and onto Merrimon. As this area of Weaverville grows, making this a 4 lane would be a little bit of a task, but I believe the Town of Weaverville and Buncombe County will work it out. Of course you can head up Hamburg Mountain Road or Dogwood Road to go into Downtown Weaverville and North, but this is the road most people use when heading to Asheville, etc.

Recently Resigned Weaverville Police Sergeant found dead 12/13/08

MARS HILL – The Madison County Sheriff's Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death of a former police officer who resigned his position as a sergeant with the Weaverville Police Department earlier this month after he was arrested and charged with assault.

Andy Cody, 38, died Friday night or Saturday morning, law enforcement officials said Saturday. No one from the Madison County Sheriff's Department was available to provide details Saturday, though the police chiefs from both Weaverville and Mars Hill confirmed Cody's death.
“He's not with us anymore,” Weaverville Police Chief Greg Stephens told the News-Record & Sentinel. “We've lost a good man. He will certainly be missed.” Mars Hill Police Chief D.K. Lewis said he responded to the death scene overnight but couldn't comment on the case because the Sheriff's Department is investigating. Lewis was visibly upset when asked about Cody, who was once a lieutenant in his department. Lewis said he responded to the scene “for the family,” but was not involved in the investigation. Mars Hill police officers had their badges covered with black mourning ribbon Saturday as they worked directing traffic and providing traffic control at the Mars Hill Christmas parade. Stephens said he was helping with funeral arrangements Saturday morning, but said he couldn't share specific details about Cody's death.

Cody was arrested Dec. 2 at his home in Mars Hill and charged with simple assault after deputies responded to complaints of a domestic disturbance at Cody's home. “There were obvious signs of domestic violence,” Madison County Sheriff's Capt. Buddy Harwood said at the time.Released on a promise to appear, Cody then sought and received a domestic violence order of protection against Angela Tweed, 38, whose relationship with Cody was described in court documents as “unmarried, of opposite sex, currently or formerly living together.” Cody, who had worked with the Weaverville Police Department for six years, resigned the same day, Stephens said. “We're certainly going to miss him,” Stephens said, describing Cody as a “good worker; a good employee. He was a good person, and a good friend,” Stephens said. Calls to the medical examiner and the SBI were not returned. ***End of ACT story

We all grieve and mourn the death of Weaverville Police Officer Andy Cody. He was under a lot of pressure and maybe embarrased over a recent scuffle; even to the point that he recently resigned. Please let the community know what we can do to help. We have lost a great citizen.

Weaverville Breakfast at Granny's Kitchen (what is going to happen?)

Granny's restaurant, lunch spot, breakfast stop, hole in the wall... whatever you wish to call it, is a little behind the times. I remember years ago they were talking about remodeling the building. Then they mentioned an addition to the existing structure. Now I think they are just waiting for someone to buy them out and build something there. The Weaverville Hardee's that was across the street diagonally went out of business due to mismanagement when it comes down to it. I stopped going because it looked unkept totally from the outside, then I walked it and got bad attitudes and service, and the Manager was constantly behind the counter eating. It kind of made me lose my appetite.

Granny's is a great place for a quick snack, home cookin, breakfast and lunch specials, and periodic desserts. Some people call it the "greasy spoon" because there is nothing "Green" about the place (well I did see they had some fruit one day, lol). Country Cooking in the raw, maybe just lightly blended to match the mixed clientel around Weaverville. Contractors and subcontractors (as well as regulars and locals) fill this place up for breakfast and lunch. You have to go outside (and then in another side door) to use the bathroom, so it is kinda the outhouse effect. I remember years ago, they used to ask what type of ham... City or Country. I did not know at the time, but quickly realized "City" ham was what I wanted. For those of you who do not know what Country Ham is; it is a slab of thick ham and covered in salt. Throw that "slab" on a biscuit with some eggs and breakfast was served. I think it comes from back in the days before we had refrigerators and food slicers. I like my ham thin, and the Boar's Head brand if available.

Granny's has been around for years, but with the area growth, they will be forced to make a move soon or get run over by incoming chain restaurants and competition. Businesses are going to eat the New Stock Road exit in Weaverville NC alive. There is too much room and it is the perfect connector to Woodfin and North Asheville. Granny... can you please tell us your plans!

Here is the first of many buildings being constructed in Weaverville NC right up the street from Lake Louise (Between Reems Creek and the Lake on Old Weaverville Hwy/Merrimon). There will be hundreds of residential units going in here. It is a very big project and the Developers are out of South Carolina.

Weaverville NC Cell Phones by US Cellular

First of all, they have a nice feng-shui in this store (and even more with people everywhere)... which makes this store inviting. The colors are also well placed, with ads and spice balanced all around the store. US Cellular has been one of the top runners in great service (cell and customer) in the mountains of Weaverville. When cell phones were first introduced, they only covered Asheville and then the highway that went through Weaverville. Residents were like "WHAT?!?!" Now everything is "cell phone beautiful" with Verizon and US Cellular making major advances in the area. Even SkyRunner out of Asheville is running high speed wireless internet into these Weaverville mountains, and making sure we are covered. Thank you Skyrunner. I know a few whole mountains in Weaverville that run wireless from Skyrunner. Being able to go relax on your acreage with a little laptop keeping you in touch with the world... when you want to of course.
