Here are five simple and powerful ways to use Google Analytics:

1. Find out which of your website's pages are getting the most traffic, and optimize those pages.

If you are running ads on the pages, make sure they are properly placed and updated. If you are linking to affiliate products, make sure your links are up-to-date and that you aren't missing any links, or new products which should be there. If you are using that page for some other purpose, such as to generate subscriptions or whatever the case may be, make sure that the page is laid out as well as possible. This can be helpful if you have a large website which has a long "to do" list and many things to optimize or tweak. By just starting with the most heavily-trafficked pages, you will get the maximum results from your efforts and also know where to start.

2. Find out which referrers are generating the most traffic, and continue any actions you have been taking to generate traffic from those referrers.

For example, if you see that Twitter is generating a large amount of targeted traffíc, you can expand your activity on Twitter. If you see that your article submissions are getting new visitors from article directories, you can make a note not to drop those out - or possibly step them up. Conversely, if you see that you have been spending time/money on a traffic-generation method which is not getting very far, you can stop wasting your time on it (presuming you have given it time to take effect).

3. Find out which keywords you are ranking the best for, and see which ones you can "push to the top."

If you had a website on dogs, for example, and found that you were ranking at #30-#40 on Google for many keywords, but ranking #11 for, lets say, "dog chew toys," you might want to work on increasing your rankings on dog chew toys and focus more of your SEO efforts on this term (of course there are other factors you would consider as well, such as the searches and competition for this term). Climbing from position #31 to #20 will generally not get you a huge improvement in traffic. But climbing from position #11 to position #3 almost certainly will. Focus first on keywords or key phrases that have the best chance of ranking high in the near future, and then move on to the others.

4. Find out which pages keep your visitors' attention for the longest.

If the average visitor on Page A stays for 5 seconds, while the average visitor to Page B stays for 150 seconds, the likelihood is that your visitors find Page B's content more interesting than Page A's.

5. Look at the graph of your bounce rate.

This tells you how many people left your site without visiting a second page. Depending on the website and the page, this may be a good or bad thing. But if you have a blog or a content site, it is usually a good sign when people stick around to view more of your posts and content before they leave. If your bounce rate increased or decreased after you made a certain change, you can opt to revert that change (if bounce rate increased) or keep it (if bounce rate decreased). For example, if I changed the theme of my Wordpress blog and then noticed a date-co-incident jump in my bounce rate, I might consider changing it back :) This statistic can be used in many ways - it will depend on the nature of your blog.

There are many, many other ways to use Google Analytics. The above are great ways to start, if you aren't familiar with or used to using this tracking system. Google Analytics can give you a far greater understanding of what's happening on your site and can guide you to continue on successful actions and drop the unsuccessful.

In case you haven’t noticed yet, the hand drawn style is one of the hottest design trends. There are several ways to create hand drawn images — you can create it from scratch in Photoshop or you can scan an actual hand drawn sketch. Personally, I like to use a scanned drawing because you get a realistic drawing texture. Here is a quick tutorial to show you how to create a hand drawn design in Photoshop using the blending mode and alpha channel.

1 Create From Scratch in Photoshop

If you have a tablet, you can simply draw the sketch by using the brush tool.

Don’t Have a Tablet?

If you don’t have a tablet, you can create the artwork in Adobe Illustrator and then imitate a hand drawing effect in Photoshop.

First draw a vector illustration. Then import it in Photoshop. Use a grungy brush and gently erase select parts of the image. Use the Blur tool to create the smug effect.

2 Scan It

The easiest way — scan the drawing and set the layer blending mode to Multiply.

Invert Color

If you want to have a white color stroke instead of black — go to menu Image > Adjustments > Invert (or press shortcut Cmd+i) and then select Screen blending mode.

Step It Up: Create Color Gradients

What if you want more than just a black or white stroke (ie. colors gradients)? Then you will have to extract the drawing from the white background. A simple way to do this is by using alpha channel.

Copy (Cmd+C) the drawing.
In the Channels palette, create a new channel. Then paste the drawing in the new channel.
Invert (Cmd+i) the channel layer.

Go back to the Layers palette, create a new layer. Go to menu Select > Load Selection. In the Load Selection prompt box, select Channel: "Alpha 1" (which is the name of the alpha channel I created earlier).

CSS is an amazing web tool, but it can easily get messy or sloppy. To get the best out of it, you must stay organised. So no more sloppy code, or unrecorded hacks. Your education in organising your CSS code is about to begin.

Keep organized. Rather than dropping in classes and id’s at random, try and keep things structured. Declare generic items first, followed by the not so generic items, and keep to that pattern. That way other developers are going to be able to follow the code, which is one of the great advantages of using CSS.

Title, sign, date. Ensure that people know it was you that did the design. This is helpful if another designer needs to clarify something with your design. This is especially helpful with a template.

Template libraries are brilliant. Once you have a good layout, strip out everything that is not generic to the template and file it. It is pure madness to write every style sheet from scratch, so this will save you a lot of time for your designs.

Remember you can save variances on a theme by saving them in a certain way, two column layout, blog layout and so on and so fourth. There are some good editing tools which will help you to do this.

Naming conventions are useful. Good naming conventions can make a lot of difference when you come to modify the design. The key here is to use generic names rather than what the element is. So instead of .largefont, .title is far more a useful name.

This has far reaching scope when it comes to modifying designs, so think carefully about what you are calling them, and this will save you a lot of work in the future.

Avoid using underscores. As backward compatibility is an issue with CSS that use underscores, try and form the habit of using hyphens instead. If you do, you will save yourself a lot of modification work later on, trying to figure out why your code is not compatible with older versions of IE or Firefox.

Repeating yourself is to be avoided. Always look to group elements where possible. This saves time coding and compiling, and try to utilise the opportunities for short cuts too.

Optimize. On the same theme try and cut down code wherever possible. So group and employ shortcuts as above. The fewer lines of code, the faster the page loads, it is as simple as that. Loose what is unneeded, and remember that zero can just be stated without a unit.

Write for Gecko. If you write your CSS design for Gecko browsers, tweaking for Webkit and IE will be easier than the other way round. So make sure Gecko browsers work first before you do anything.

Use a validator. If your CSS design is stuck, use a validator to find errors. W3C has a free validator, and this will be a big help in getting your design back on track.

Keeping it clean. By keeping browser specific CSS style sheets individual, and just use java script, server side code, or conditional comments when needed, will help you keep things clean and tidy.

These CSS tips for keeping your code well organised will not only help you write better code, but better templates too. Your colleagues will also benefit from a tidier coding from you, and you will be better thought of as a designer.

solution they return, the higher the overall quality of their product
and the more popular their search engine will become. Providing
quality content is vital for SEO success.

2. Keywords are your number one tools for achieving high rankings. You
must understand keywords and how they work on the web. You must know
how many searches are made each day for your chosen keywords. Sites
like Wordtracker and Seobook will give you a rudimentary number of
searches. Design your pages around your targeted keywords and don't
forget to do some deep-linking to these pages on your site. Find and
build backlinks to these interior keyword pages and not just to your
home page or domain URL. Picking keywords with medium to low
competition has worked out well for me. So too has using the more
targeted and higher converting "long-tail" keywords been very
beneficial for me.

3. Onpage Factors and site design will play a major role in the
spidering and indexing of your site/content. Make sure all your pages
are SEO friendly, made sure all your pages can be reached from your
homepage and no pages should be no more than three levels away from it
- keeping a sitemap listing all your major pages makes the search
engines happy. Make sure you have all your meta tags such as title,
description, keywords... are all optimized. (Title = around 65
characters, Description = around 160 characters) Remember, your title
and description should not only be keyword targeted but these are the
first contact/impression anyone will see of your site - make sure you
use them to draw and entice interested visitors to your site and
content. Also make sure your title and URL are keyword matched for
maximum effect. Having your major keyword in your Domain Name also
helps, using a pike | to separate different elements of your title has
helped my rankings, so too does having your keyword in the first and
last 25 words on your pages.

4. Google will send you the most qualified traffic so concentrate the
majority of your SEO efforts on Google. Don't ignore Yahoo! or MSN but
Google is king of search so give it the respect it deserves. With its
new browser, Google's influence will only grow stronger so you must
optimize your pages for Google. Use Google's Webmaster Tools and
Google Analytics to fine-tune your pages/content for Google. I also
use Google Alerts to keep up on my niche keywords and for comment
link-building on the newly created pages Google is indexing.

5. Link Building is still the most effective way to boost your search
rankings. Make sure you get backlinks from relevant sites related to
your niche market and make sure the 'anchor text' is related to your
keywords but don't ignore the text and overall quality of the content
linking to you. The anchor text is the underlined/clickable portion of
a link. Don't forget linking is a two-way street, make sure you link
out to high quality, high ranked relevant sites in your niche.

6. Article Marketing
is a well established method of getting quality backlinks and it still
works. Writing short 500 - 700 word informative helpful articles with
your backlinks in the resource box is still very effective for getting
targeted traffic and backlinks. Longer articles have also worked for
me and I use an extensive network of distribution including
SubmitYourArticle, Isnare, Thephantomwriters... plus other major
online sites. Don't forget the whole element of blogging and RSS feeds
in your article distribution. And always remember you're also using
these articles to pre-sale your content or products. Don't forget to
leverage sites like Squidoo, Hubpages... to increase your rankings and
traffic.

7. Onsite Traffic Hubs have worked extremely well for me. These
traffic hubs are whole sections of your site devoted to one
sub-division of your major theme. For example, if you have a site on
Gifts, then wedding gifts could be a separate section. This would be
fully fleshed out with extensive pages covering everything dealing
with wedding gifts - a self-contained keyword rich portion of your
site on wedding gifts. Works similar as a sub-domain but I prefer
using a directory to divide it up, such as yourdomain/wedding_gifts.
(Most experts suggest always using a hyphen in your urls but
underscores have worked fine for me.) Search engines love these
keyword/content rich hubs but keep in mind you're creating content to
first satisfy your visitors.

8. WordPress blog software is extremely effective for SEO purposes.
WordPress software is easy to install on your site even if you have no
experience with installing server-side scripts. Besides search engines
love these highly SEO friendly blogs with their well structured
content and keyword tagging. I have at least one of these on all my
sites to draw in the search engines and get my content indexed and
ranked. I also use Blogger (owned by Google), Bloglines and other free
blogs to help distribute my content.

9. Social Bookmark/Media Sites are becoming very important on the web.
These include a whole range of social sites like MySpace, FaceBook,
Twitter... media news sites like Digg, SlashDot, Technorati... you
must get your content into this whole mix if you want to take full SEO
advantage of Web 2.0 sites. You should be joining these sites and
using them. It's time consuming but it will keep you in the swing of
things. One simple thing you must do is to put social bookmark buttons
on all your pages so that your visitors can easily bookmark your
content for you. You can use a WordPress plug-in or I like using a
simple free site/service from Addthis.com which gives me a simple
button to put on all my content.

have an overall masterplan/strategy when it comes to SEO. You must
have an understanding of what SEO is and what it can do for you and
your site. More importantly, you just don't want SEO - you want
effective SEO. In order to achieve effective SEO you must have three
things: Relevance, Authority and Conversions.

First, your content/site must be relevant to the topic or niche area
you're pursuing - your content must fit in and be related to all the
other sites in your niche. That's why closely themed sites do so well
in the search engines, they give only relevant content to what's been
searched for or discussed.

your subject or niche. Establish this authority position and the
search engines will love you and your content. One way is to develop
this authority, besides offering superior content, is to form
links/partnerships with other perceived authority sites in your field.

conclusion.

Third, conversions should be your main goal of any SEO efforts because
