There have been many battles between Sony’s and Nintendo’s gaming devices, however, never one quite like this. This time, it is the Sony Playstation Vita vs the Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS was launched on March 27, 2011, while the PS Vita was released on February 22, 2012, giving the 3DS nearly a year head start. In this battle between two very popular handheld gaming systems, we will create 5 rounds, each with a win either for the PS Vita or the 3DS. In some cases, there may be a tie. Then, we will see how many wins device received, add them up, and determine a final winner. We will be testing these two systems in 5 rounds: Hardware/Graphics, Design, Game Library, Digital Stores, and Value. Will the 3DS fly high or will the PS Vita knock it down?

Hardware/Graphics
PS Vita: The PS Vita is by far one of the most powerful portable gaming consoles, hardware-wise and graphics-wise. The PS Vita packs in an ARM Cortex A9 core (4 core) CPU and also has a 6 axis motion sensing system: 3 for gyroscope, 3 for accelerometer. On the front and back, there are two cameras. There is a front camera and a rear camera, the latter of which can take photos and videos in 0.3 megapixels. On the front there is a 5-inch OLED touch screen while on the back there is a touch pad. The PS Vita has built in stereo speakers as well as a microphone. Visually, the 5-inch OLED screen produces jaw-dropping graphics. It has a resolution of 960 * 544 pixels and can produce about 16 million colors.

Nintendo 3DS: The 3DS was the first gaming system to introduce autostereostopic 3D(glasses-free) technology, and it’s pretty amazing. The 3DS isn’t nearly as fast as the PS Vita, and it does have a lower resolution. The top screen is about 3.5 inches while the bottom resistive touch screen is about 3 inches. The resolution of the top screen has a resolution of 800*240 pixels and it is capable of displaying 16.77 million colors. The lower screen is 320*240 pixels in resolution. The 3DS also features cameras: two on the rear for 3D or 2D photos and videos and one on the front for 2D photos and videos. The camera’s have a resolution of 640*480 pixels, surpassing that of the PS Vita. The 3DS has a built in microphone, stereo speakers, streetpass, spotpass, and a retractable stylus for use with the touchscreen.

This round goes to the PS Vita mainly because of it’s bigger screen and better resolution.

Design
PS Vita: The PS Vita features many different controls on its awkwardly shaped design. On the front lies the action buttons, directional pad, stereo speakers, dual-analog sticks, menu button, wrist strap holders, select and start buttons, front facing camera, and of course, the 5-inch OLED touch screen. On the bottom you have an SD card slot, charging port, serial number, and headphone jack. On the rear is the multitouch touchpad. On the top is the game card slot, power button, shoulder buttons, and the volume rocker. The PS Vita’s design is a bit bulky and has a slightly awkward shape, which makes it difficult to fit into a standard pocket.

Nintendo 3DS: The 3DS comes in the same clamshell design that the original DS came out with, making it much more portable than the PS Vita. This design also protects the screens and fits inside a pocket more easily. When closed, the front includes the two cameras and the notification LED. On the top, you have the infrared sensor, shoulder buttons, stylus slot, game card slot (for both 3DS and DS games), golden prongs for charging with a charging cradle, and charger port for charging with an ac adapter. On the right side, there is the wireless switch. On the bottom, there are wrist strap holders, power and charging LEDs, and the headphone jack. On the left side, you have the volume slider and the SD card slot. When opened, the top houses the stereo speakers, 3.5 inch LCD 3D screen, and the 3D depth slider. On the bottom there is the circle analog stick pad, directional pad, action buttons, power button, 3-inch LCD touch screen, and the start, select, and home buttons.

These two systems have entirely different designs, but this round goes to the 3DS mainly because of the better positioning of the buttons and the convenient design to allow greater portability.

Game Library
PS Vita: The PS Vita hit the market about a year after the 3DS, which gives the Nintendo a huge advantage in this category. However, the PS Vita’s library is quickly growing with new games coming out even as you read this article. The PS Vita has about 150 games on the market along with many games available in the PlayStation Store. One major disappointment for many fans, though, is that the Vita is not backwards compatible with PSP games. A solution to this is to download PSP games from the PlayStation Store. If you have a big collection of PSP games and you buy a PS Vita, you probably wont be able to use all of those games on the Vita.

Nintendo 3DS: The 3DS got a major head start, but this didn’t help too much, as there are just about as many games for 3DS as there are for the Vita. The 3DS now has about 150 games and this selection is also growing rapidly. A big plus is that the 3DS is backwards compatible with all DS games while the eShop provides many dsiware titles, 3DS games, and classic games.

This section is a tie. Both systems have about the same amount of games, new titles coming out rapidly, and games for all demographics. They also both feature stores with games that you can download digitally.

Digital Stores
Ps Vita: The PS Vita comes with the PlayStation Store installed into the system. This store has a wide amount of content that you can download digitally. You can buy or rent movies and TV episodes, buy songs to put onto your music player app, and buy PSP games, PS Vita games, applications, and so much more. There is so much to choose from that it actually feels like the iTunes store on a gaming handheld. Along with so many categories, there is so much content that you can download. This PlayStation Store integration along with the graphics capabilities makes this device feel like a portable PS3.

Nintendo 3DS: The 3DS comes with the Nintendo eShop pre-installed. It is definitely better than the Wii shop channel on the Nintendo Wii, but it does feel a bit limited. There are three major categories that the store is split into: DSiWare games, 3DS games, and Virtual Console games. Notice a pattern? They are all games. Sure, there are some applications and the Virtual Console is nice to those who love good old classics, but the eShop feels pretty limited. No movies, TV shows, or Music. Just games.

This round definitely goes to the PS Vita because its digital store offers a much wider variety of content for your system

Value
PS Vita: The PS Vita comes at a hefty price tag of $249.99 for the wifi-only version and $299.99 for wifi+3g model. That is much more money compared to the 3DS. Another major downside is that to play a game, you must have an SD card. However, the system doesn’t come with one. So on top of the price of the system, you also have to add an extra 20 to 100 to buy an SD card. The PS Vita is great, but the price is one of its potential deal-breakers.

Nintendo 3DS: The 3DS sells for $169.99, $80 less than the cheapest PS Vita. You don’t need to have an SD card to play games, but the 3DS package retails with an SD card, which can save you a lot of money.

The 3DS wins this round because it costs about $100 less than the cheapest PS Vita and SD card combo.

Final Results: The Nintendo 3DS won 3 rounds while the PS Vita took 3 rounds as well. Both are even and tied. Both systems had their pros and their cons. The main deciding factor in choosing between the systems is your personal tastes. If you love the PlayStation 3 and you’re looking for a portable gaming console to match, you’ll most likely lean toward the PS Vita. On the other hand, if you love Nintendo and all of their classic titles and characters, you’ll most likely favor the 3DS.

Today, we begin the Android App of the Day series with a simple app. This app is called Shush! It’s a very simple app that is designed to get rid of one of the small nuisances of life. When you set your phone on silent or vibrate, this app kicks in and asks you how long you want your phone to stay on silent. It is a great app for people like me who are constantly missing phone calls because I forget to take my phone off of silent mode.

When you set your phone to silent, this timer automatically pops up on your screen. You can set the timer for anywhere between 15 minutes and 12 hours, in increments of 15 minutes. The circular display around the time is a real clock. As shown in the picture, the blue portion begins where 1:00 would be on a clock, and ends at 3:45, when your phone’s ringer will be restored.

There is also an option to keep the ringer silenced indefinitely. This can be used when you need to silence the ringer for a period of time longer than 12 hours, or if you are not sure how long you need your phone to stay quiet.

At the bottom, you can see a bar that shows 100%. This is the restore volume level. Your phone will automatically restore to this level after the set amount of time. The level can be customized by exact percentages, although your smartphone may have its own set levels of ringer volume.

Here, the color theme of the interface is black and blue. There is an option to set the interface to any of five colors: blue, purple, green, orange, or red. The black background is a constant and although the other colors look great, I personally think blue looks the best.

I’d like to hear what your favorite colors are for the Shush! app. Comment below!

This concludes the first Android App of the Day post. To suggest future Apps of the Day, comment below. If you found this article useful, be sure to share it with your friends.

Please note that Web4Tech is not affiliated with the developers of the apps featured on “App of the Day”.

Along with the new tutorial format, Web4Tech also introduces a new feature named “App of the Day!” Today’s app from the Windows Store, or any other app store, is iHeartRadio by the nation radio company, Clear Channel Communications. We’ll be taking a look at the Windows 8 version of the app.

For those that are unfamiliar with iHeartRadio, it’s a service that allows you to stream local radio stations owned by Clear Channel. Like Pandora, it creates a playlist of songs you might like based on a song that you select. Let’s take look at the pros and cons of the Windows build.

Pros:
iHeartRadio for Windows utilizes the Windows live tile layout, which allows for a clean and simple layout. This app, being available on Windows 8 desktops and laptops, incorporates all of the usual features of the iHeartRadio app for mobile devices. The automatic playlist format is nice for students working on a paper since they won’t have to listen to the same songs over and over again or manually select songs. Best of all, it’s FREE!!!

Cons:
As well as using the live tile format, iHeartRadio for Windows utilizes the special tablet menus. It might seem like you cannot search for a song, but in reality, you have to use the default Windows search pane, hidden to the right.

You can save radio stations, songs, and other iHeartRadio services by right clicking anywhere. This may be inconvenient to those on a laptop or desktop.

iHeartRadio for Windows also does not save account data. Even if you connect your Facebook profile or have an iHeartRadio account, you will always see the following screen when loading the app:

It’s a bit of an inconvenience to those who are impatient and want to listen to their punk rock or dubstep stations right away.

Overall, iHeartRadio does what it promises on yet another platform. Clear Channel could have implemented the search and save functions differently from within the live tiles. As seen by the screenshots, there is plenty of free space near the play and scan buttons for the “Save Station” and “Like Song” buttons. If the app API was different, the search function could have been implemented from within the tile. There is hardly anything negative to say about the app itself since most of its issues are API-related.

Alright people, we at Web4Tech are excited to launch the new tutorial format! Let’s get it started! Today, we’ll start with something moderately simple and appealing to an older demographic: blocking websites.

As we know, the latest operating system of Microsoft, Windows 8, doesn’t contain a physical start menu button like it had in Windows 7. Many users who have upgraded to Windows 8 are indeed of the missing start menu button on their desktop. So how do we get the start menu button back on our Windows 8? It’s simple! The folks at Classic Shell made an excellent program which automatically installs the start menu button. You can find and open your programs, files, control panel, and power options with one click of the start button. Follow the steps below which will lead you to a successful installation for the start menu button.

Step 1: Go and download Classic shell

Step2: After download completes, run the program and follow on screen instruction to complete the installation

Step3: If you followed the on-screen instructions properly than setup should would finish successfully

Step 4: After clicking finish, you will get a window that you see below. Select “Basic Settings” than press “ok”

Step5: You are all done! You should now have a start menu button just like Windows 7. You can play around with the Classic Shells settings to your needs.

*If you want to access the Windows 8 App Menu section than use the left bar and select Start*

Today, HTC held a media event in New York City and revealed its new Android flagship called the “new HTC One.” The rumors flew around for the past months in the news and many thought the device was going to be known as “HTC M7,” but they were wrong. After many struggles in the phone market, the Taiwanese phone manufacturer took the big step to announce this new smartphone and is hoping to see a positive result which will get the company back on the success path.

“People today immerse themselves in a constant stream of updates, news and information. Although smartphones are one of the main ways we stay in touch with the people and information we care about, conventional designs have failed to keep pace with how people are actually using them,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “A new, exciting approach to the smartphone is needed and with the new HTC One, we have re-imagined the mobile experience from the ground up to reflect this new reality.”

So what are we waiting for? Let get to the specs of the device. HTC One comes loaded with a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor and has a stunning 4.7-inch 1080p Super LCD 3 display. The flagship has a outer aluminum unibody design weighing in at 143 grams. Obviously its running Android 4.1.2 JellyBean, but the company went ahead and added its new HTC Sense 5.0 to satisfy its customers. If you haven’t noticed yet, the handset is the first to offer Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 600, clocked at 1.7GHz and combined with 2GB of RAM on-board.

The handset also offers a 2,300mAh Li-polymer battery with dual Beats Audio-certified stereo speakers. To understand the camera features, check out the statement from the company itself.

The breakthrough HTC UltraPixel Camera redefines how people capture, relive and share their most precious moments. HTC Zoe gives people the ability to shoot high-res photos that come to life in three-second snippets. These Zoes, photos and videos are then displayed in a unique way that brings the gallery to life and transforms the traditional photo gallery of still images into a motion gallery of memories. It also automatically creates integrated highlight films from each event comprised of Zoes, photos and videos set to music with professionally designed cuts, transitions and effects. These highlight videos can be remixed or set to different themes, and can be easily shared on social networks, email and other services.

To enable this innovative camera experience, HTC developed a custom camera that includes a best-in-class f/2.0 aperture lens and a breakthrough sensor with UltraPixels that gather 300 percent more light than traditional smartphone camera sensors. This new approach also delivers astounding low-light performance and a variety of other improvements to photos and videos. In addition, the perfect self-portrait or video is just a tap away with an ultra-wide angle front-facing camera which supports 1080p video capture. Multi-axis optical image stabilisation for both the front and rear cameras also helps ensure video footage smoother whether stationary or on the move. HTC UltraPixel camera adds many other features and effects such as enhanced 360′ panorama, time sequencing and object removal.

There we have it folks, the new HTC’ flagship has landed. The HTC One will be available globally through more than 185 mobile operators and major retailers in more than 80 regions and countries beginning in March.

An official Bloomberg report indicates that Facebook is developing an app which will allow your friends to track your location. That sounds so stalkish right? For example, you decide to go to the coffee shop and one of your close friends is also in the nearby area. Obviously you want to go meet him and say good morning since he is nearby, and that is exactly what Facebook is trying to do. Basically, the new App will track your information in the background and will inform you if one of your buddies is nearby. The feature seems to be similar to Foursquare’s radar technology, which gives you a notification when your friend is nearby.

Facebook’s terms and conditions already reserve the right to collect your information. “We may put together your current city with GPS and other location information we have about you to, for example, tell you and your friends about people or events nearby, or offer deals to you that you might be interested in. We may also put together data about you to serve you ads that might be more relevant to you,” Facebook states.

Facebook continues and says, “When we get your GPS location, we put it together with other location information we have about you (like your current city). But we only keep it until it is no longer useful to provide you services, like keeping your last GPS coordinates to send you relevant notifications.”

Lets wait to hear the official words on this Facebook rumor. Indeed Facebook is finding better ways to connect and bring people together, but this idea can lead to chaos.
