The sites are now optimized for screen width 1024 pixels rather than 800, but the biggest change is in performance. Since we started working with optimization back in March/April this year, load time for the home page has been reduced to a third of what it was. A big benefit for users!
You may think this has been achieved by stripping the page of images and functionality, but no, quite to the contrary images are larger than before and all content and functionality is still there. Instead we have made a lot of improvements behind the scene.

I'll give most of the credit to a tool called YSlow that I have written about in a previous post. that is very helpful in guiding us in our work. This is an add-on to the Firefox browser that analyzes your page and scores all elements.

It may come as a surprise to many that the amount of content is only of marginal importance, it is all the overhead that slows down loading, especially the number of elements in a page.

When we started optimizing we had 64 elements in the home page, this is now down to 18.

A tool that can help you understand this better is pingdom. Here are links to our reports for March and November respectively, showing the improvements that we have made. A great feature with pingdom is that it saves your results so you can make comparisons over time.

When we started out YSlow gave the homepage a score of F (56/100), now the score is A (96/100). But we're still not at the end of the road. Our main focus so far has been on the top pages as they receive the most traffic. The pages further down the hierarchy have also benefited from these improvements, but is addition they have their own issues that require further investigation.

When we install new hardware later this year we will also start gzipping more content than now, as we have been holding back some elements for fear of putting too much load on the servers.

The challenge of translations

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdPCLFsnxV32yp0geKDeqjErfS59VuygCoRyRc8l7s1tZZKO_wgPQwza89R7HB-E7tHeMsAPdyKPD_U8wd9Hy5J8TqIZUk7QXpBrdpU22ikZ2_0IvfSJbYc6hDDwzdIppTPpM1vKcU3tQ/s320/welshroadsign.jpg" border="0" alt="courtesy of news.bbc.co.uk"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264046508632053234" />We have 28 languages on ABB's web site, and sometimes I wonder if translations are correct or not. And so is this blog by the way, that is the standard width for all Google-hosted blogs.

But many sites have moved a step up the ladder to 1024 px width. My favorite news site http://news.bbc.co.uk/ changed a while ago, and I've noticed Facebook recently followed suit.
Only 3 % of our users still have screen size 800x600 and the number keeps falling.

But that is not the whole picture. Many users with better screens do not maximize their browser, so the active window is actually smaller than it could be. I've seen recent statistics (I've lost the link, sorry!) indicating that about 20 % have an active window that is less than 1024.

We know from all user testing that people hate horizontal scrolling, and they will certainly not do it just to see what is outside their current screen. When you have millions of users, one in five makes for a lot of people!

But at the same time we're facing a challenge from the opposite side and that is the dilemma; more than 50% of our users have a screen wider than 1024 px.

I've noticed that many use "screen size" and "screen resolution" as if they were synonyms, but they're not. Some years ago a 14" screen would be 800 pixels wide, today it is often 1400 px. As a consequence all elements shrink with the site itself, making it difficult to read on a more "modern" screen. A 9 pt font that looks okay on an 800 screen looks like a 5 pt font on a state-of-the-art laptop. Hopelessly small! So over time you need to increase the font size to accommodate these users.

In the end we have decided to increase the site to 1024 px, despite all the work it takes to redo a site with more than a hundred thousand pages. But what tipped the scale may have been something else; 800 px has started looking old fashioned. It's not about vanity, it's about making the right first impression to users; if the design looks outdated, users may believe the content is outdated as well.

Next weekend we plan to launch the new design. And as we make the change we have also used to opportunity to refresh the use of images as well as optimizing performance and improving usability in different ways. I hope to get back to that once we have launched.

The importance of critical mass in social networking

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP0Hw9_CWC3E49QrewWhmJcfMyXfDnI3oscza4syRRtlGSxKg-iLrdnWQ3eFbOJlr5M5kp37-LNhdVsekJPplvvVVzKkuycGjwhg20zCRK-icp9VPuhtCPEMihj74fe_yfRJsVJpfS9io/s320/socialnetworkdistribution.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187881937392922290" />I came across this graph on the preferred use of social networking sites from Le Monde, courtesy of O'Reilly Radar. You probably need to click on the image to see it in full size to be able to read it, but it shows which networking sites are the biggest in different countries.
MySpace is the biggest in the US, Venezuela and Italy, while Hi5 is the most popular in Central America, Portugal and Mongolia. Like most Norwegians I prefer Facebook and so do the Canadians and the Egyptians. Orkut is most popular in India and Brazil, while Bebo is most popular in Ireland and New Zealand

In most cases there is no pattern, like language, connecting the countries with similar preferences. In stead I suspect it is all about being the first to reach critical mass. When you consider which social network to join you are obviously most likely to join the ones where you friends already are, creating a snowball effect that benefit first movers in the area.

I believe there is a lesson in this for us as well; if we want to succeed in building something similar inside a company, you need to get the snowball rolling...

Time for a performance check-up again

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2myYjXpsIiNw7kRqAr0fBA6D2PqyJ4bcZfrRW5GtjkRfhz-lFPnuQgx0yOZV8jazwOgjxKYQsFH-LzWuTsVO4y9uxC_AQbTCTIH_kL8oYGvX59nzSDK9TSr_QiU9Fc9P7BqxUN5cZgu0/s320/yslowscreenshot.jpg" border="0" alt="Click on image to enlarge"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187484210536410786" />In my view performance is one of the – if not the – most important "feature" of any web site. It's something you must have at the back of your head whenever you make a change, but I still find that every now and then you need to step back and look at performance as such. The small "improvements" you make in every release may still add up to damaging the users experience over time. The content itself is rarely an issue, that's most often only 5–20 per cent of the total, it's all the overhead it generates that really matters.
While working on this lately I've come across a very useful tool that I'd like to share. It's a Firefox add-on called YSlow, developed by Yahoo. Once installed (You have to install Firebug first.) it gives you a very good overview of issues that affects performance for the end user. Just go to the page you want to look at, open Firebug, then Yslow, and you see an analysis of all elements on the page.

In one view it displays a long list of action that could improve performance of the site, including advice on moving CSS and JS in the page, elements that would benefit from using a Content delivery network (CDN), components that lack expiry header and page parts that could be gzipped.

The Yslow application also references the Best practices for speeding up your web site from the Yahoo developers network, and I wish I had found it sooner. In one glance it sums up many of the issues we've spent weeks and months figuring out. It also taught me quite a few things I was not aware of...

First pilot takes to the air!

On 19 March, ABB in Norway kicked off the migration of ABB's intranet.

The migration went smoothly and intranet users in Norway are now able to comment on all pages on inside/no (both News and other pages) and rate each page on a scale from 1 to 5.

Since the launch, there have been more than 18.000 visits to the Norwegian intranet, 200 ratings have been recorded, and roughly 15 comments have been submitted.

-Posting comments live on the intranet may seem like a daring thing to do, so I think the readers will need some time to get used to that functionality, says Helene Gunther Merg, head of Corporate Communications in Norway. -But quite a few of our pages have already been rated by many of our users, and we are happy to receive any feedback, good or bad.

Read more about how the pilot was received in this article on inside.abb.com (requires intranet access).

Ready for piloting

After several weeks of testing we are now ready to launch our first pilot of ABB's migrated intranet. Our focus on the intranet offers some consolation, but the issues are still there. The use of Ajax -which is central to most web 2.0 solutions - does not only offer the average user new possibilities, but also provides hackers with new, enhanced options!
I came across a recent book on the subject; "Ajax Security" by Hoffman and Sullivan (2007, Addison Wesley, 470p) that seems to offer one of the best overviews of the issues. While going into some detail about threats and remedies, it also offers non-technical readers like myself a good overviews of issues and remedies.
If you're intereted in the issue, take a look at this review (courtesy of Pathfinder; Agile Ajax)that also gives a useful summary of many of the issues that are further covered in the book:

"[The book] demonstrates not only new security threats that are unique to Ajax, but established threats that have gained new traction in the Web 2.0 era. It then details both the specific technical solutions and - more importantly - the mindset that are necessary to combat such threats.
Because so many developers have historically overlooked the importance of security, the authors approach their topic for what it is: a remedial subject. They take pains to explain the basic mechanisms by which hackers have exploited insecure web applications over the last decade: cross-site request forgeries, denial of service attacks, cross-site scripting and SQL injection. Then they explain how those mechanisms have changed thanks to the rise of xmlHttpRequest, public APIs, mash-ups and aggregators. If you've ever read a Douglas Crockford rant about the "brokenness" of the web security model and wondered why the guy was such an alarmist, Hoffman and Sullivan are only too happy to provide you with a much-needed wake-up call."

Agile Ajax also has an interesting follow-up detailing some of the most shocking finds based on the book.

Microsoft buys FAST Search & Transfer

Today's big news is that Microsoft is buying FAST for US$ 1.2 billion. FAST is a major player in the enterprise search market, and a merger opens interesting possibilities if and when Microsoft succeeds in integrating FAST's search technology with their own Sharepoint platform.

ABB currently has an enterprise agreement with Verity/Autonomy, which we use for all structured search on our web sites. In addition we're using Google's enterprise solution GSA to serve search results for unstructured content both on http://www.abb.com/ and on our intranet site inside.abb.com.

We have recently looked at FAST's search solution, and found it to be excellent. However, switching costs and uncertainty about the future development of FAST and their major competitors made us conclude that we should stick with Verity for the time being, and rather look at how we could fine tune the current solutions.

The different search platform evolve over time, and in addition our user needs are changing. When we scrapped using Verity for unstructured content and replaced it with Google's GSA some years ago, we were very happy with the resulting improvements. Now we see further improvement is needed, especially for the intranet.

Search on an intranet is inherently different from Internet search; While ranking of Internet search results to a great extent can rely on link popularity, intranet search must to a much greater extent depend on relevancy. Even if no search solution is either or, this calls for different weightings in the algorithms for the two vehicles.

With exponential growth in web content, both inside and outside the firewall, more focus on the issue of findability is called for. And search is an important element of this. Our plan is to look into possible short term improvements using the current solutions, while we start the process of assessing our long term options.

Don't tamper with Wikipedia...

Over Christmas we've had a small edit war over the ABB article in Wikipedia. Someone, apparently associated with the company, tweaked the article in several places to paint a positive picture of the company and it's history. But Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a collection of marketing material, and sentences like "ABB is rated Number One in Power Technology in the World" has no place in an encyclopedia.

These edits were done on Dec 26, and probably thanks to Xmas it took several days before most of the changes were removed. But after that edits went back and forth several times in a small edit war. Hopefully it has calmed down by now, so the article will not be blocked from further changes in the future, waiting for tempers to calm...

The original changes are clearly not in compliance with Wikipedia's NPOV (Neutral point of view) policy., which is absolute and non-negotiable. There was no source quoted for this claim of supremacy. And while it may be correct that ABB on some occasions(s) have been "rated no 1 in power technology in the world" it is pretty obvious there is no institution entitled to bestow such an honour on an individual company. So it is pretty obvious that some of our competitors can claim the same.

As stated by Wikipedia, "The neutral point of view is a point of view that is neutral, that is neither sympathetic nor in opposition to its subject". This also mean that a careful selection of facts to support a specific view is a violation of the policy.

Be aware that also "anonymous" edits can be found out, by tracing the user's IP number using wikiscanner.

Writing a blogging policy is not as easy as you would think...

When we started out working out a blogging policy, it seemed fairly simple. There are private blogs and corporate blogs, and that is it.
But as we have been digging into the issue, what appears as distinct categories from the outset start blurring into each other. A corporate blog has to include some personal - and perhaps even slightly controversial - issues to attract and retain readers. Some personal blogs are more often than not about company related issues.

And is there really a difference between blogs and other types of web postings? Certainly not with regard to possible effects on the reputation of the company. So the policy needs to cover other forms of web postings that can be connected to ABB.

Also, the distinction between anonymous postings, personal postings and postings that can be connected to ABB starts blurring when you look close enough. No-one is truely anonymous on the web. If an ABB epmoyee should vandalize a Wikipedia entry about a competitor, he can be found out based on his IP address, even if he does so without identifying himself.

Here are some incidents in the past that I feel we need to address:

An employee posts slanderous information about the management of another company, stating his full name, title and name of ABB unit... I don't think anyone reading it would suspect ABB as such was behind it, but it is still unacceptable in my view.

An ABB employee has a blog that covers the use of ABB products. He feels a strong urge to tell George W. exactly what he means about the war in Iraq... He has every right to freedom of expression, but how should we handle this from the company's point of view?

An ABB employee anonymously stuffs articles on Wikipedia with ABB marketing material. He is outside ABB's corporate network so cannot be found out, but does that make it any more ethical? Anyone reading it would automatically suspect ABB is behind it...

We've also seen an much publisized incident on the web where a senior manager (not in ABB!) posted false rumours about the financial health of a competitor on news groups using a nickname.

Hopefully these issues are properly covered in the current version, but I am sure that we will need to go back and amend the guidelines as the web evolves.

ABB blogging and web posting policy

Here is the "final" version of our blogging policy that has been in the works for some time:

"In general, the company views employees' web involvement positively, and respects the right of employees to use the web as a medium of self-expression. However, if you choose to identify yourself as an ABB employee or to discuss matters related to our technology, business or activities, please bear in mind that, although you and we view your web postings as a personal project and a medium of personal expression, some readers may nonetheless view you as a de facto spokesperson for the company. In light of this possibility, we ask that you observe the following guidelines:

The principles and guidelines that apply to ABB employees at work also apply to their on-line activities. Know and understand ABB's Code of Conduct and relevant Group directives and instructions. Please contact Group Function Legal and Compliance in case of doubts.

ABB strives to compete fairly and thus the web should not be used for covert marketing or public relations. This is especially important if you post anonymously to third party web sites. Remember: No-one is truly anonymous on the web and your postings may be tracked back to you or the company and damage our reputation.

Make it clear to your readers that the views you express are yours alone and that they do not necessarily reflect the views of ABB. If you have a blog or personal website, reduce the potential for confusion by putting the following notice – or something similar – in a reasonably prominent place: "The views expressed on this website/blog are mine alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer."

The best way to be interesting is to write about what you know. Try to add value by providing worthwhile information and perspective. If you have a deep understanding of something, talk about the challenges and issues around it. Respect your audience.

Be careful to avoid disclosing any information that is confidential or proprietary to ABB or to any third party that has disclosed information to us. Do not publish specifics about ABB's relationship to customers or partners without their explicit consent. Be extra careful with information related to financial performance to make sure you are in compliance with financial disclosure regulations.

Be as respectful to the company, our employees, our customers, our partners and affiliates, and others (including our competitors) as the company itself endeavors to be. Show proper consideration for others' privacy and avoid comments which may be derogatory in nature. This includes material that relates to aspects of gender, race, age, nationality, sexual orientation, politics, religion or physical ability.

You may not attack personally fellow employees, customers, competitors, vendors, or shareholders. You may respectfully disagree with company actions, policies, or management.

Remember that what you publish will remain public for a long time.

Be the first to correct your own mistakes, and don't alter previous posts without indicating that you have done so.

Respect the copyright of others.

You may provide a link from your site to the corporate website. Over-hyped Web 2.0 technology developments risk diverting resources from the high-ROI design issues that really matter to users.
Nielsen has previously aired his scepticism to excessive use of new technologies, but admits that Web 2.0 ideas are not inherently bad for users.

"They can be highly effective; we sometimes see examples of usability-enhancing Web 2.0 designs in our studies. But it's more common to find Web 2.0 ideas that either hurt users or simply don't matter to users' core needs. While the latter case might seem innocent, irrelevant website "enhancements" diminish profits because they indicate a failure to focus on those simpler design issues that actually increase sales and leads."

Nielsen notes that community features are particularly useful on intranets The reasons communities work better on intranets also explains why they're often less useful on the open Internet:

A company's employees are an actual community with a crucial shared interest: succeeding in business.

Employees are pre-vetted: they've been hired and thus presumably have a minimum quality level. In contrast, on the Web, most people are bozos and not worth listening to.

Although some intranet communities — such as those around internal classified ads — are aimed at lightening up the workplace, most intranet communities are tightly focused on company projects. Discussions stay on topic rather than wandering all over the map.

Intranet users are accountable for their postings and care about their reputation among colleagues and bosses. As a result, postings aim to be productive instead of destructive or flaming.

Small groups of people who know each other are less susceptible to social loafing, so more users contribute to intranet community features. In contrast, Internet communities suffer from participation inequality, where most users never contribute and the most active 1% of people dominate the discussions.

As an extremely rough guideline, here's Nielsen's advice as to what the percentage of Web 2.0 infusion that might benefit different types of user experience:

Informational/Marketing website (whether corporate, government, or non-profit): 10%

E-commerce site: 20%

Media site: 30%

Intranets: 40%

Applications: 50%

Applications score so high because users perform actions repeatedly and thus truly benefit from rich UI possibilities. In contrast, mainstream websites have very few repeated actions that justify the added complexity of a full GUI's shortcuts.
For website usability, the problem is not whether a specific operation takes 1 second or 10 seconds; people typically perform each operation only once or twice. The problem for websites is the 5-10 minutes users lose when they do something wrong because the site is too complicated. (After such an experience, they usually leave — and you lose the business.) Simplicity is more important than efficiency for done-once actions.

To read the full article, go here.

If you want to subscribe to his newsletter, go here.

Stop doing social because it's cool, do it because it's effective

I came across a useful article over at Forrester's Groundswell blog on introducing social web technologies - blogs or communities. No rocket science, just common sense, but perhaps useful none the less.

"What do most companies do wrong when they enter the social world? No, it's not that they're being fake, or don't "get it." It's that they don't really know their objectives."

"Is your company doing its social strategy backwards? If you started by saying "we should do a blog" or "we should create a page on a social network" or "we should create a community" the answer is probably yes."

"It's time to stop doing social because it's cool. It's time to start doing it because it's effective."

To help clients with this fundamental idea, they've come up with a little acronym called POST: People, Objectives, Strategy and Technology. Do it in this order, don't get it backwards!

Dopplr is opening up

Dopplr is a site that keeps track of people's travel plans. When "folks" tag your content they are likely to use colloquial terms closer to what other users would look for. If you have an excellent web site about "canine nutrition" chances are slim that users will find it, as most of them will they search for "dog food". That is, unless you let your users tag it with "dog food" so others can find it as well.

We have the same issue on the ABB web site. Our excellent flow meters are called "flow measurement products", a term that I suspect no sane person would use trying to find them. Likewise, the relevant business unit insists on using terms like turbocharging as opposed to turbochargers, and robotics rather than robots...

However, letting users tag content is not straightforward in our case, not least because we have 28 languages on the web site and suspect that tags must be connected to the correct language version to be effective. It would be interesting to hear from you if anyone has found a good solution to this?

Another nugget from Berlin: Designing tag navigation

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8fP2nQEg6kQCXL7TT78Y7yvFObpBzSJb44ysYnDNLtrRSHEWJn18AnigJlmXl_IaHlxd6e9qD505XclyhV9f6MNJ50hQK7VtfE8EmQxDukMcRia3rRyQwGCOKwSJzacfY0D3rE1HjZME/s200/Web20Expo_Prog_cover.gif" border="0" alt="Click here to dowload the program for Web 2.0 Expo in Berlin"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5135303112623025970" />The web 2.0 Expo in Berlin recently clearly showed that Europe is lagging behind the US in this area. Certainly not all presentations met my expectations, but I would still say the nuggets I found among all the gravel made the visit worthwhile.
One presentation I would recommend in addition to Cal Henderson's below is "Designing tag navigation" by James Kalbach. He has a degree in library science and is currently a Human Factors Engineer with LexisNexis. He has previously served as head of information architecture with Razorfish Germany. There is nothing revolutionary in the presentation, but it gives a very good overview of the pro and cons of different approaches to tag navigation.

You can find more presentations from the conference on slideshare.net.

Improvements to Doodle

I have previously introduced you to Doodle, a nifty little web site you can use to find the best meeting time for a group of people. You go there, list the options, then receive a unique link that you can send around to participants, who can then check off which options fit their schedule. As soon as someone adds his preferences, you receive a mail in your inbox, and one glance on the page shows you the best option.
The site has recently launched a new version which is now available in 13 languages, including Hungarian, Ukrainian and Rumantsch... They have also added a feature letting users select one or more among several options, like a list of venues or preferred topics. Very helpful and saving a lot of time when more than two people are trying to agree on something.

Geeky stuff: Optimizing web site operations and performance

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinhyqFKpjPi2n3EoH_FJ5cYgr18b3lkEDjT9hr_wmBF89HY7YaYnSVbvCClYQsjdH38CjWNP_9fYpzomYzJQ-QqIW71igkGuMEjYmsf0U7WsjCq2qBkKOfyivVGRmvlc-Au7LO6lFuYCs/s200/51T4N9YGE9L__AA240_.jpg" border="0" alt="Building Scalable Web Sites"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5135249425531825954" />To optimize performance of a web site with a complex application structure, several servers and a world wide user base is quite a challenge. Every site is unique in its set-up so learnings from others have limited value. But there is always something to learn.
Attending O'Reilly media's Web 2.0 Expo in Berlin recently, I had the pleasure of listening to Cal Henderson, who is responsible for operations at flickr.com, the extremely popular photo sharing site. From his presentation "Scalable Web Architectures; Common Patterns & Approaches", I took away quite a few good ideas on how we could improve performance both for abb.com as well as our intranet. Improving performance is not only a question of server set-up, tuning and distribution, but also how the application itself stores and accesses data.

If his 145 slides are not enough, I'd recommend his book "Building Scalable Web Sites". Still want to know more? If so, you should enlist for O'Reilly media's planned Velocity conference in San Fransisco June 23-24 next year, which they claim is a first of its kind. In addition to Cal Henderson, Amazon.com and other global web sites will be presenting.

UPDATE: Cal Henderson is in fact lead developer on Flickr, not responsible for operations.

Amazon launches new e-reader named after ABB CEO?

I don't normally cover new technical gadgets here on this blog, but I simply have to make an exception as Amazon have launched their new e-reader named "Kindle".
