New website has gone live

The new Scobie website went live today. This is a site that I have been working on with graphic designer Sophie Fenton. Sophie has had all contact with Scobie and been in full charge of designing the look of the site. She then provided me with PSDs (photoshop files) of each page of the site which I sliced up to create the working website.

It’s a big, technical website but the project went very smoothly.

Working with graphic designers

The last 3 weeks I’ve been busily working on a new website. The site was designed by a graphic designer who gave the design to me to program. It’s a large site with a lot of pictures so it’s been hard work but interesting too.

This project has made me think about what is the best way for graphic designers and web developers to work together. Just knowing how to get started can throw up many questions such as:

What is the best format for the graphic designer to present the design to the developer?
What software is best to use?
How to show the designer the progress of the site during development

Many graphic designers are used to designing for print and are not necessarily aware of some of the complications of designing for the web. There’s a lot to consider such as:

What are the best /safest fonts to use?
What restrictions are there in terms of colour?
How to keep the number of graphics to a minimum without totally compromising the design.

I’m planning to address some of these questions soon. If anyone has any other suggestions / questions to add, please feel free to add a comment.
