So search engines remove those sites from their database. If you use a lot of meta refresh tags to redirect pages, the search engines may decide your site is spam and delete it from their index. I don’t believe sIFR, Cufon, and any other replacement techniques are what would qualify as the “right way”. Most of them use a combination of JavaScript and/or Flash (either of which might be disabled or blocked at the users browser), or dynamically generated images (which is far from ideal, concerning many points from usability to bloating, as someone before me mentioned), and many of them even pose a problem to screen readers and such. Maybe I’m missing a method here, but if I am, I doubt it would provide a holy grail. Of course, I’m open to suggestions. </P><P>Personally, I’ve been tempted many times to use some form of replacement, but I tend to look at it as a kind of slippery slope – once you start things might get ugly (Of course, another factor is that some people like ugly, or at least – don’t mind it). The big news of the day is the <A href="http://www.mediaite.com/online/gawker-medias-entire-commenter-database-appears-to-have-been-hacked/">Gawker hack</A> that happened over the weekend. This has serious implications as many people use the same password for many different sites. <A href="http://websearch.about.com/b/2010/12/13/all-gawker-media-sites-hacked-with-usernames-and-passwords-compromised-are-you-at-risk-heres-how-to-check.htm">Find out if you are at risk.</A> <P>If you use a standard password for many different sites and you've signed up to comment on Gawker sites (like Lifehacker, Gizmodo, io9, and others, to name a few that I read) then you should <STRONG>change your passwords</STRONG>. Not just on those sites, but on any site where you use the same or a similar password. And you should consider not using the same password on any sites, as <A href="http://financialsoft.about.com/b/2010/12/13/gotcha-do-you-use-the-same-user-name-and-password-everywhere.htm">shared passwords are not secure</A>. The About.com Net Security Guide has posted a <A href="http://netsecurity.about.com/b/2010/09/11/is-your-password-strong-enough-to-not-get-cracked.htm">tip to create strong passwords</A>. </P><P>A good way to protect yourself is to use a password safe like <A href="http://macs.about.com/od/applications/ss/top-10-applications_2.htm">1Password</A> (available for Windows, Mac, and iPhone/iPod/iPad — with cloud syncing). With a password safe, you only need to memorize one password — the one to the safe. Or, is the search function's disappearance simply a fluke?</P><P>A request for comment by MySpace was not returned. But getting and keeping a domain can be very difficult. I heard a story a few weeks ago about someone who had trouble renewing their domain and inadvertently lost it. Then their domain registrar (who shall remain nameless) said they could re-register it if they paid them a $50 bounty on the domain (in addition to the domain fees). Unfortunately, this type of hijacking is much more prevalent than it should be.
