In an attempt to change their image as not being appealing directly to consumers, Microsoft plans to open up stores around the U.S. in an attempt to create a environment where they can have trained retail associates on duty to better help the buyers get what they need from the computer. Alongside selling computers we can expect them to have all the latest Microsoft Zune players and accessories all in one place which will help for those who do not like dealing with Best Buy.

Really appealing directly to the consumer is the main concern for Microsoft here, in recent market changes they lost a full percentage of the market two months in a row while Apple grew to have 10% of personal computer sales. This is not the first attempt by Microsoft to open a retail store in 1999 they had a store in downtown San Francisco however it closed not long after due to the blue screen on death, er, I mean to say due to other shops in the area closing down as well (area desirability?.)

Personally I am excited to see what the stores will look like, Apple has unveiled some pretty cool stores and now it is Microsoft’s turn. I expect to see Xbox 360’s blaring and Zune advertisements everywhere and hopefully on the desktops of the latest of what Microsoft has to offer in the handheld/personal computer category. Microsoft has already hired a retail lead to head the project, David Porter, who is a dreamworks exec with 25 years under his belt as a Wal-mart’s VP and general merchandise manager of entertainment. All I can say is lets hope the service received at the Microsoft store chains is better than finding out what all these error codes mean in Vista.

p.s. I am new to the staff here you can check out my personal blog <a rel="nofollow' title="the details" href="http://www.nickpruett.com/" target="_blank">the details (wip) for the latest in the blogging community, or my <a rel="nofollow' title="nick pruett bloggersbase" href="http://www.bloggersbase.com/?rl=y4DBOzhPF9Y%3D" target="_blank">bloggersbase for more posts by me.

Ok, maybe it was just me, but earlier today any search through Google displayed the malware warning below the returned result.

First, my wife and I were searching for Petsmart and my wife noticed this warning:

I thought that was odd, but large sites have been hacked before. So maybe they were having some problems. However, as we searched for other things, we saw that same warning below every listing in Google, no matter what the search phrase was. We even searched for “google maps” through Google’s search and here is what we got:

If we attempted to click on any of the returned search results, including the one that would take us to google.com, we got this warning:

In the process of doing more troubleshooting, it seems that the glitch worked itself out. I wonder if anyone else noticed these issues. Shout back if you have a second.

I am guessing that the errors we saw were a result of one of these situations:

1 - Google Malware Reporting was experiencing some type of glitch and was erroneously flagging every site as potentially dangerous.

2 - I have gotten some type of virus that is somehow playing around with something hidden in someplace I have yet to discover.

3 - Every site on the Internet (including google.com) was briefly infected with some type of malware and Google was dutifully warning everyone.

Hmm. Thinking. Thinking.

I am hoping it was #1

Economically, things are tight everywhere you look these days and State budgets are feeling the pinch too. This year, States have seen drastic reductions in collections from income tax (if a person’s income drops, so does their tax), sales tax (people are not buying as much) and property tax.

Well, the Governor of New York is proposing one measure that is sure to get music lovers up in arms: impose a state tax on iTunes and “digitally delivered entertainment services.” Awesome!

Governor Peterson’s proposal still needs the approval of New York State Legislators, but I am sure there are 49 other states paying close attention to the outcome of the iTunes tax bill (or iPod tax, as they are calling it).

So, your $0.99 music download might be going up to $1.06 . If bills like that are passed, I bet there will be a marked increase in music and movie file sharing.

Facebook has quickly become one of the most popular Social Networking websites around and that is something that virus writers, hackers and other bad guys have certainly noticed.

There have been reports of those wacky Nigerians hacking into Facebook accounts and impersonating the user to try to scam money from their friends and reports of a Facebook javascript bug.

Now, there are reports of a virus called Koobface in circulation on Facebook. Here is how it works:

A hacker infects a Facebook user’s PC

The hacker then sends messages to the user’s Facebook friends. The messages say something like “You look just awesome in this new movie” or something seemingly innocent like that.

A link contained in the message sends the recipient to a website where they are prompted to download a supposed update of Adobe’s Flash Player, so they can “view the video”.

If the recipient clicks the link, their PC is infected and the cycle continues.

The hackers are taking advantage of the climate of trust the exists on Facebook. Friends feel that any message they receive from one of their friends on Facebook should be trusted because of the privacy features in place. We tend to let our guard down and not think that our friend’s account could have been hacked or that a message we receive could contain a malicous virus like Koobface.

This post is certainly not technology related, but I cannot help but wonder about the thought process of some people.

According to a report from Wilmington NC television station WECT, some residents are saying that hunters are shooting Swans in Hewlett’s Creek. These Swans are the kind that children feed with bread crumbs, in some cases they will eat right out of your hand. Shooting an animal like that is wrong on so many levels:

The animal does not fear humans and so cannot distinguish the threat. So they are not really “hunting”, are they?

It is illegal to shoot animals in Wilmington City Limits.

It’s a Swan - it is not like they are killing a wild boar or a bear. I suppose these guys need something that presents a little less of a challenge.

The residents that say they have witnessed Swans being shot also say that the hunters are covering up their boat numbers so that they cannot be identified. Evidently, they know that what they are doing is wrong and would probably be embarrassed to get caught.

Hopefully, the residents will get some evidence on camera.

If you are one of the “hunters” who shoot animals as they innocently swim close to you, please leave a comment because there are lots of people who would love to see if you can create a complete sentence with your words .

Michael John Maris allegedly stole the identity of a three year old child and used it to setup accounts with local utility companies.

According to Alamance County Deputies, 44 year old Mebane, NC resident Michael John Maris stole the social security number and identity of a 3-year-old child. He then used it to get natural gas service and a telephone.

Maris was charged with two counts of obtaining property by false pretense and one count of identity theft. His bond has been set at $5,000.

The child’s grandmother, Linda Raker, was alerted to the problem when a collection agency contacted her requesting payment for the natural gas bill - which was in her granddaughter’s name. That, of course, raised red flags (what child needs natural gas service, afterall ) and the grandmother notified the authorities.

It also seems that Mr. Maris is related to the grandmother, but the Sheriff did not disclose the exact nature of the relationship.

Identity theft is quickly becoming a serious epidemic. In fact, the United States FBI website says that you cannot prevent the theft of your identity - yikes! If you think you are a victim of identity theft, contact the authorities first and then follow these other steps

The recently reported clickjacking vulnerability affecting Adobe Flash Player could also allow a hacker to remotely activate a computer’s microphone and webcam (meaning they could see and hear what you were doing).

The Adobe Security Blog is reporting that a Flash Player patch should be available by the end of October and until it is released, they are encouraging users to change their browser’s Flash Player settings by following these steps as a temporary workaround:

Access the Flash Player’s Global Privacy Settings panel at the following URL: http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.html

Click “Always deny”

Click ‘Confirm’

Completing those steps will keep the bad guys from remotely accessing your computer’s webcam and microphone - although I am not sure why that ability was even an option in the first place with Flash Player. Why would someone, good guy or bad, even need the ability to remotely access and control another person’s microphone?

Since YouTube and other online video sites use Flash to display the videos, users that frequent those types of sites could be particularly vulnerable, I would think.

UPDATE: Adobe has released Flash Player 10.0.12.36 which fixes the potential clickjacking issue that still exists in previous versions. Adobe’s security bulletin recommends downloading and installing the latest version. If you cannot download it, you should follow the steps above and they hope to have a patch ready in November.

My wife and I wanted to rent a movie and do the “home body” thing this past weekend, so Friday I went to our local video store to see what caught my eye. We take turns selecting the movies and it was my turn. The pressure was on. My mouth was dry.

After wading through the TONS of movies out there, I was leaning toward a George Clooney movie: Leatherheads. My wife and I agree on most romantic comedies and with George Clooney and Rene Zellweger starring, surely this movie is going to be great!

I am also one of those people that scans the cover of the movie box to read the review snippets and there were two placed prominently on the cover to further convince me of the wise choice I was getting ready to make:

“Hilarious!” - Christina Vandre (KARE-TV)

“Clooney and Zellweger are comic gold.” - Kevin Steincross (Fox-TV)

Even though I had never heard of either of those two, I felt that surely they must be in the know when it comes to movies. “They both work for TV stations”, I mused, “and TV stations are responsible for the things that display on people’s TV screens and movies are also shown on screens.” The connection was obvious to me.

Selection in hand, I proceeded to the checkout. In my world, things were moving perfectly.

Upon my arrival home, it became clear to me that my wife did not share my enthusiasm. She was apprehensive about having to watch a “football” movie. “But, honey”, I assured her, “two TV people said it was a score. Look, right here on the cover. Read that.” I was confident that she could not deny my logic. She was unimpressed.

Undaunted, I inserted the movie into the DVD player. It was about that time that things fell apart.

Leatherheads could have been more entertaining were it made as a silent movie. At least then there would be justification for keeping one’s eyes open and focused on the screen throughout as opposed to a) dozing off or b) reading the list of ingredients on the box of candy one was eating.

I have seen tomato plants that were more entertaining.

I cannot elaborate on the details of why this movie was a dud. Mainly because of these two reasons:

I dozed off in parts.

We turned it off halfway through, reasoning that we had already gambled and lost an hour of our lives and, since the movie was going to be 2 hours long, decided to not lose any more.
