Well considering the poster in question has posted other gems on
other videos such as "FIRST!", I can tell that this is a
true leviathan of the education system that has to be reckoned with.
But it's not alone. I've seen other posts on my old paintball
videos, usually people who go at least a year back in the archives,
slamming me for not creating content for paintball anymore in a place
they know nobody will attack them.

Cowardly, sure. But this is about par for modern paintball keyboard commandos. It works for their heroes, why not them? I've noticed that these people love to watch
others try and fail rather than try themselves. Another typical thing for them, but now I'm getting personal so I'll stop. But, if you need to
know, here's the simple answer.

Paintball isn't worth my time anymore.

I came to realize that paintball, as an entity, does not want
progression. Players and talking head e-celebs SAY they do, but when
it all comes down to it they don't. Progression, in this case,
refers to the embetterment of the game. Solving problems, moving
forward, making it better. But when I look at the game as of now,
it's the same problems we've had for 15 + years.

Overshooting : People don't like getting lit up with 100+ rounds,
but love dishing out the punishment. It's been this way for years.

Paintball "needs" to be mainstream : Most instances of televised tournament
paintball have been glorified infomercials, paying the network for
the air time to show a game nobody would watch otherwise. Hell, if
tournaments didn't deliberately plant themselves in people's faces,
the general public would never watch the games.

The gear costs too much : Back when I started a Piranha LB sold
for about $200. Now the top end tourney guns that "everyone
needs" tips the $1500 mark. When you ask these players why you would need a $1500 water balloon shooter, they scoff and say "You just don't get it!"

(whatever) team attitudes SUCK : I heard this about woods tourney
guys back in 1990, then arena tourney teams in 1998, now about
scenario team guys in 2013. At least teams don't trash hotel rooms
anymore, amIright?

Cheaters : Most of you won't remember the "Cheaters live
longer" shirts, but most of you have heard the "it's not
wiping, it's a foul, like in basketball!" routine. It's the
reason corporations won't touch the game in general, they don't want
to be associated with the player base who they see as "WWE" with goggles.

And I could go on, but you get the idea. The problems have
existed for years and years and years. So why haven't they been
solved? The simple answer is that financially speaking, it's not
worth it to the companies. They figured out that if they basically
let the players do what they want, the players happily give them
money. They complain about tournaments and scenario games, but they come back to the
next one. And besides, even if they don't, a new crop of players
will be here in 3-5 years. The burnout rate is offset by the
incoming player rate.

This brings me to, well, me. I took stock in the current
paintball scene, and figured out it was the same basic game as in
1994 or so. The guns changed, the fields changed and the tech changed, but the player and industry attitude was
the same. the sales pitch was slicker, but the same "responsibility is for losers" mentality. The only difference is that with video sites like
"youtube", you could make a character and oversell the
image. The "E-Celeb" culture is really hurting the game by
marketing themselves as immature, irresponsible players who know
everything and are NEVER wrong. Scream and swear at a camera, trash
people who disagree with you, go after personalities and not problems.
Most of you won't remember the Henrys, but those who do will
understand why I mention their names. Cult of personality. The game
is nothing but a vehicle to push the persona, just like it was around 1994.

Paintball players claim they want progression. They want to see
an end to overshooting, cheating and so on. They want to see
paintball on TV. In the end, however, they won't do what it takes to
actually make it happen. If you don't believe me, ask an e-celeb to
walk up to a major distributor and ask them to stop making high ROF
guns or to make their sponsored teams sign a code of conduct. Hell, ask them to stop using their high ROF sponsor gun or sign a code of conduct for themselves. They more than likely won't. They'll mock you for making the suggestion, then push their
penny auction site or branded t-shirt store with new jerseys with their logo on it.

Paintball hasn't changed, and for that matter paintball, as a
sport, does not want change.

And after taking stock in that fact, I had to re-evaluate why I
was wasting my energy on something that did not want to evolve. And
believe me, it would be easy to sell out. I could shave my head
bald, make a persona of myself, scream at a camera, swear at kids,
show highlight reels displaying how awesome I am, trash everyone
else, always say I'm right, make videos of "guy sitting in front
of a camera" and "keep it real" by spouting off
anything that came to mind for 20 minutes but pushing my own brand
name....

Or I can walk away clean.

I haven't fired a shot on a paintball field for over a year, and I
don't miss it. In all the hobbies I do now, there's a sense of
"progression". Snowboarding, for example, in the same
timeframe as paintball's lifespan has gone from "hooligans on a
mountain" to "Olympic discipline". I don't fool
myself, I'm not a halfpipe or park kinda guy, but I still see real
world benefits every year from them. In paintball, not as much.

There are still unfinished projects. My old computer died some time ago, taking
the "Legends" movie with it, but I've been trying to save
what I can to fulfill my promise of DVD's. It's like picking needles
from haystacks scattered across Nebraska, but it's still being worked on. I also have one more
project I want to do, self funded, of which I am not going to promise
anything. Just, for now, if things hold out I'll try to film it
after spring. But other than that, I walk away clean.

Paintball seems to be a monster to me, always hungry. You can
feed it all your money, all your energy, all your effort, and it
still wants and demands more. Not just the industry, but the
e-celebs want more of your hits and time, the players want more
content and complain when you're not playing more so they can have
opponents... But if you get nothing out of a monster but crap, why
keep feeding it? This is why the burnout rate is so high. Paintball takes, and rarely gives. And even then, yeah the giving has strings attached.

So, let me return to DanielPaintball. A person who's previous
works include "First", "MOARRRR GEAR BAGSVIDEOS!!!!!!" and "You shoulddo a gear-bag video". "wtf" am I doing now?
Something you'll be doing quietly in about 3-5 years if statistics
are valid. Walking away.

"Here Is the riddle: It's 3am, the doorbell rings and it's your parents and they are here for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, juice, bread and cheese. What is the 1st thing you open?" If you get it wrong, you are "required" to change your profile pic to a giraffe for a length of time, hense the "Giraffe Riddle".

Spoiler alert ahead, you've been warned.

Back in grade school I had a particularly nasty teacher. She decided to make a point at us by asking the students to "write instructions to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich", and then forcing the students to follow their own instructions TO THE LETTER, humiliating them in front of a classroom of peers when they couldn't do the task as they had written down to the letter. So as a result, I learned a life skill. Never make an assumption on incomplete information when there is punishment on the line. Especially when being distracted.

The Giraffe joke is like a lot of old distraction jokes as well. "Ethyl and Marv are going on a picnic. They have three children, each one married and had 3 children. Each family has a dog. how many people are eating at the picnic?" Two. Ethyl and Marv. the rest is a distraction to make you over think.

So in this case, the base information given is "It's 3am, the doorbell rings and it's your parents and they are here for breakfast. - What is the 1st thing you open?"

You're supposed to ignore the food items listed, think outside of the box, and give an answer not chosen. Currently, there are two answers that are "accepted". The first answer they're looking for is "the door" (IE : You open to door to let them inside for breakfast). The second is "your eyes" as sane people sleep at 3 AM. The funny thing is that depending on who asks the question, one answer will be wrong, the other will be right, or visa-versa. Hell, they can change it just to say "UR WRONG! BE A GIRAFFE!"

I contend both answers aren't 100% correct, and here's why. First of all, the question is making assumptions. Remember that part above, about learning that assuming things is bad? Yeah. The question assumes several things like "You don't live with your parents." and "You sleep at 3 AM." Both of which may not be the case. So you may not need to open your door NOR your eyes. But, let's play with the assumptions, shall we? So let's assume that you live alone, and it's unusual for your parents to want to have a meal at 3 AM, shall we? We're operating outside the "riddle" here, but why not.

Well you SHOULD be opening "Your heart", because it's your parents, and if you love them, you're probably wondering what the hell they're doing at your door at 3 AM and you may be concerned. Are they ok? Why are they at the door? Why aren't they home? You love them, you feel empathy for them, so you open your heart to them and invite them inside. This is, of course, assuming you love your parents.

Not everyone gets along with their parents. I know many people not on speaking terms with them. They wouldn't open the door even if it was hailing outside and their parents were being beaten into bloody pulps, so they may wish to open their minds, as the parents may have something they want to say at 3 AM that simply will not wait until morning. Or, conversely, if they came to the door at 3 AM to simply harass the kid and call them, oh I don't know, faggot or hippie or half-breed or similar, the person answering the riddle may open their phone and call the cops.

Or, if you want to take a rather macabre turn, if my parents are dead, and they show up at my door for breakfast, I might want to open a box of shotgun shells, open the gun locker, and then open fire.

So yeah, I get the riddle. It's to fool people into the answer you think should be correct, but without specificity it's instead asking for the answer YOU think should be given. It's a way to say "HA! I AM SMART 'CUZ I THOUGHT OF THIS!" and, in reality, it's an open ended question that shouldn't have a "correct" answer. Especially when people can't agree on the "right" off-answer to begin with.

I once saw a poster that said something along the lines that a teacher never knows how far their lessons will be carried. One spiteful, jaded teacher taught me a lesson a long time ago, and I still carry it now. So thanks, bitch.

"The point", mirrored post

IK'm mirroring this post from a techPB discussion because I figure it will be deleted once they see I haven't been banned yet. (on a good note, I'm amazed they haven't banned me)
it's fair. I've used the line "follow the money" a lot myself so it'd

to pay that off unless I get numbers in the hundreds of thousands.

And
besides, as far as I know that blog is not monetized (if there's ads on
it I didn't put them there) and the video response to Mike was
intentionally not monetized specifically becasue that kind of video is
not something I want to make money on. I don't know about the rest of
you, but I use ad blockers anyway so if anyone has ads I never see
them. So to me, that's all a wash.

No, posts like the one I made is about more than "making a few pennys". My interest has been, and remains, the future.

I'll
try to keep this short, which is difficult because I tend to look at
this holistically. So, opinions. Paintball isn't a sport, it's a
buisness. It's in the buisness of selling an image. That image
currently is "you can do anything you want in paintball." It's how they
pick up a lot of their demographic of teenagers who are usually in the
"rebellion" stage. You suck them and their parents dry by telling them
"HEY! Wanna be cool? Buy this gear, attend this tourney, go to this
event, and you'll someday be as awesome as your heroes. And you want to
be cool like them, right?". Heroes that make self-promoting videos on
youtube so they seem accessable 24/7/365. So the industry supports the
e-celeb who sells the image that "I play paintball and I'm cooler than
you, and I can do anything I want to do, and you can too if you buy this
gear", players support these guys through page hits and by buying the
products they endorse.

The problem is that this
model is awful for long term growth. Without maturity and restrictions,
you can't have growth as a sport. Restrictions make it so that you don't burn out all at once. Maturity
gives a sport perspective enough to weather out bad times without
worrying about failure. As paintball players have seen time and time
again the 3-5 year rotation is very real. Fortunately, there's as much
an inflow of players as there is outflow, but as we saw with the
"PAINTBALL IS DYING!!!!" trend a while back, that's very volatile. It
also creates a toxic environment in which players are all about
"themselves", and not a "community". When everyone is trying to "take",
and nobody is "giving", you run out of resources (real or social).

That
is what "this" is all about. Looking at a symptom with the hopes that
it will get people to look at an overall problem. Mainly that every 3-5
years, we get a full rotation of players when it SHOULD be "every 3-5
years, our paritcipation doubles". Ironically, when I look at
individual sports like snowboarding, they manage to keep participants
invioved for a lifetime. Snowbaording is a gear driven activity too,
and they have celebrities who make videos that they sell on DVD, but
they also manage to do it without burning people out. I think the key
is that snowboarding has an understanding that "money won't buy you
skill" and they have celebrities who have a sense of maturity about how
they present themselves and their sport.

Ask yourself if the actions you see a lot of these painbtall e-celeb guys do would EVER fly in real professional sports.

(Edit add 8-7-13)

Mike responded in the thread, including this statement. :

"Rob, you can say whatever you would like to say, and I'll close this thread. After that, you're not welcome on this site anymore. This site is full of family and friends of TechPB, not backstabbing fucking cowards who don't have the decency to call or email a friend before blasting them on a blog with no provocation or warning. I don't have time for some guy who thinks the whole paintball world should model videos after his, an oof pacing back in forth in front of a camera with a backwards hat on, gesturing wilding, and bitching about overshooting. "

So my prior comment about not being banned from TechPB is no longer applicable.

The profitability of the "E-Celeb"

The last few days have been.... enlightening. Yes, we'll call
it that. But in the end, it's been proving to me what I've known for
a while, so allow me to elaborate.

Some of the feedback I've gotten from the last blog post said
"It's just paintball, can't you let it ride?" And it's a
valid point. It's "just" a game, right? Well, that's sort
of the problem. See, when Mike Phillips of TechPB fame absolutely
flipped his stuff at me, he inadvertently let me in on the real story. He's turning a hell of a profit, and his actions
are to protect his income.

Let's backtrack. Mike Phillips runs TechPB, Markerbids.com and
his youtube channel "paintballtechpb". When I named him in my last blog piece, he
decided to go after me with all the resources he could, first appealing to
our "5 year friendship" then attacking me on my failing health
and financial issues publicly, rubbing my nose in his success and
quoting his numbers at me. What was really the tell for me was in an
e-mail he sent me after I had already told him "goodbye".

In it, his points of contention is
that I put his name in a "google searchable" blog and said
bad things about him. He also bragged about clearing "6
figures" through Markerbids, TechPB and his youtube channel
"paintballtechpb". His thrust has been, and remains, that
popularity is more important and justifies what he does. And that's
when it clicked. This has nothing to do with paintball, it's all about profits.

So I did some looking about. According to socialblade.com,
Phillips could be clearing as much as $137
a day, or about $50K a year, in monetization of his youtube
videos. Granted, this goes by raw view count and does not account
for non-monetized videos and CPM fluxuations. By comparison, Wolf's
estimated income is $8K
a year from paintball videos, A-Train is about $521
a year, Midnight Angel is around $474 a year, and PBFashion (HK Army) is about $146K
a year on videos alone.

Keeping in mind that these are estimations, but if they're close
then yeah there's a lot of money involved in paintball popularity
just on youtube. Combine that with marketing yourself in a paintball
website that can sell branded items like t-shirts, headbands, guns
and accessories to paintball players, and now you're starting to see
it clearer. Mike Phillips also runs a penny-auction website
(markerbids.com) and I'd love to go into that, but there's a puppet
who does it much better than I.

What I'm getting at is that this isn't "just a game",
it's a business. It always has been. The business of paintball is,
and always has been, selling an image and not a sport. The
modern money maker is to get popular by selling the image that
paintball is a game where you can do anything you want and demonstrating that you can in videos. The main
commodity is popularity, the numbers are everything. And allegedly
it is "6 figure" profitable for people who are willing to
do it.

Profitable, but not progressive.

See, in all the numbers that are being slammed in my face what's
being ignored is that paintball has yet to progress past "hobbist"
stage. Paintball is over 30 years old now, and we still play a game
that isn't even a blip on the radar. Compared to snowboarding,
skateboarding, bass fishing, poker, League of Legends... paintball
has yet to evolve past "OMG WE GOT MENTIONED ON A TV SIT
COM!!!!!" But who cares, as long as the individual has popularity on their side that makes it good.

People keep calling me a throwback or a dinosaur, and in a way I
am. I would like to see paintball legitimized into the realm of true
sport. I'd like to see our players be considered athletes, and see
them get paid millions to play the game. I'd like to be able to find
team uniforms and logo shirts on the racks of the local "S-Mart". But instead, what we have is what we have. An industry selling an
image of permanent vacation and our "heroes of the game"
acting like children. It's no wonder why sponsors run away screaming
when paintball looks for outside money.

In my opinion, this is one of the big dangers of the e-celeb
culture. It stifles growth. But then again, if nothing else the
last few days have shown me that paintball doesn't want to grow. It's happy where it's at. A small niche activity that the outside
world doesn't seem to notice. It's safe, in that when the world
isn't watching you can do anything you want. The moment other people
look in and critique
everything you do, then you have to actually act responsibly. And
paintball doesn't want to do that. It would cut into individual
profits. It would make the individual e-celeb less popular when they actually have to be accountable for what they say and do.

In my town, a new
lazer tag place opened up. It's becoming something of a phenomenon
here. I'm not exaggerating when I say there are three "tactical
lazer tag" facilities in 30 minutes drive of where I'm sitting
to write this. To get into the rocking chair a little, I remember
playing "Lazer Zone" in the Chicago suburbs with car
headlights and photo-sensitive sensors glued onto headsets, so it's
always interesting to see the progression of it.

The whole reason I knew about this place was that one of the
viewers of my show told to me that they were opening and recommended
I check it out. So I went the other day. The guy behind the counter
was friendly, happy to talk about the place. I mentioned that a
viewer of my paintball show told me about the place, and he asked
what the show was. I told him "Web Dog Radio".

Instantly, he told me "Never heard of it, and I'm a hardcore
paintball guy."

I told him I wasn't surprised. And in all honesty, I'm not. Web
Dog has always been the "best kept open secret" of the
paintball internet community. Everyone knows about it, nobody talks
about it. And I kind of understand why. So forgive this being self
serving, but I want to explain this.

A few months ago the phrase "internet paintball celebrity"
was thrown around as an insult. It described people like A-Train,
Mike Phillips, Wolf, "Mr. H", "Necro", "Midnight
Angel" and in fact most of the self-proclaimed self-important
people who manufacture shows and useless videos about paintball
without actually saying anything of importance. Here's a clue in
order to figure out who I'm talking about. In a video interview with
someone else, is the "celebrity" also on camera and/or talking
40-60% of the video about themselves? If so, they're an e-celeb.

The thing is that all of these guys have a following that dwarfs
what I do. I would kill for their numbers if I thought it would
help. They have these followers because they present an image that
is bigger than life. They act like jerks, they're loud, obnoxious,
permanently immature, and basically all the things people want to be.
Permanent vacation, chasing the next paintball match with no
tomorrow, bragging about getting the latest and greatest in gear,
only to trash it for the next thing to come along.

But let's go back a little ways, to about 2003 when I started
making paintball how-to vids in the backyard. At the time it was
unheard of. The videos before then was PigTV's event coverage (which
was more like a news broadcast) and Serenity Dragon (which was an
interview show). I hosted the videos out of pocket, and paid for the
bandwidth more than I care to admit. Did pretty solid shows about
tactics and techniques without trying to come off as a tactical
genius. Wasn't loud, wasn't obnoxious, wasn't full of self
importance. Just stuff that worked for me, and stuff that I could
pass along. It was my way to give back to a community.

When the costs of bandwidth and production started to get a little
out of hand, I reached out to the industry to support the show. I
was laughed at. National Paintball Supply told me outright "There's
no future in paintball videos on the internet." I was told
"Nobody wants tactics videos, there's already the Ironmen tape".
It didn't gel with the message the industry wanted to sell, mainly
"buy our gear, get better." I quietly did three seasons or
so of videos before hanging that up.

That isn't to say that nobody got the point. Tom at Airgun
Designs got it. Collin at LAPCO got it. Chris at Flurry got it.
The guys at Nexed got it (and were amazed that, unlike their
tournament teams, I actually did what I promised I'd do.) But for
the most part, the industry didn't support it. Therefore, I had no
real grand exposure or presence. Yet, I kept plugging along until it
became too much of a cost for me.

Fast forward to now. Changed gears in the last few years to make
a more "culture" show because it's cheaper. I've turned my
focus to trying to put a harsh spotlight on the ugly sides of the
game. People don't want to see that, they just want to be happy in
ignorance. The message of my early videos was "Learn the theories, learn the game, play longer." This wasn't profitable, apparently. I switched gears to an angrier mode to slap people awake, and that wasn't popular either. No support, no exposure, no help. Just like always.

I get told a lot "Shut up and play", usually
from people about to be gone on the 3-5 year plan and pass the problems on. Funny thing is that when I offered to change gears again, to be more like the "popular paintball people", the outcry was equally loud of "NUUUUU!!!! DON'T SELL OUT!!!!!" Thing is, the "PB-e-celeb" formula works.

I
look at the modern "e-celeb" videos and I see basically
self-serving fluff, and people eat that up. These aren't people,
they're characters. Or more properly caricatures. Everything that
the demographic wants to be told, the e-celeb reinforce. Act like you want,
shoot lots of paint, buy these new guns, light people up, you'll be a bad-ass and be happy. That's the way
the industry has been all along, why change now?

A few months ago, I simply stopped filming paintball videos. I
have yet to see anyone ask me "what's going on?" that told
me something more than any direct feedback could. Meanwhile, someone spouts profanity or screams "hoo-ya"
at a camera or makes themselves a laughable parody of a paintball
player or releases video of guys getting the snot shot out of them in
slow motion, and that's what gets supported.

Fluff.

I told a friend that there's a lot of money to be made telling
people a message they already want to hear. The harder route is
selling them the message they don't want to hear because it's
uncomfortable. It's not popular. It's not going to be supported by
an industry built on selling players a message that they want to
hear. Its the demographic, its what they want, its what the industry
will support, its what the players want to see and be told is
"acceptable". That's what gets passed along. Not things
that think long term, not things that are helpful like tips and techniques, just
things that make players feel good now.

So all that in mind, I'm not surprised that a hardcore
"modern" paintball player has never heard of Web Dog Radio.
They know brash personalities, they know the caricatures, they know
the brand names like HK... Not a show that doesn't make them feel
good by condescending to them and offering them milk and cookies.

I'll be shocked if people know about Web Dog in 2 years.
Paintball is a sport of "What have you done for me lately"
not "What have you done to build this foundation I play on?"
And in the end, I'm getting to be "ok" with that. So I'm
just that obscure paintball guy who made some videos "back in
the day" using "dated equipment". The tactics are
still sound, people can watch the videos now and get something out of
it, but they won't. It’s easier to be told "buy this new gun,
go out and kill! OOOORAAAA!!!!!" For that matter it's easier
to buy a new gun than to improve your skills with your current one,
but that takes time and on the 3-5 year train who has time for that?

It's not as easy to be asked to think about what you're doing, but
in the long run it makes for a stronger sport. The modern "hardcore"
crowd doesn't want to think. They want to shoot ropes of paint,
light people up, yell at people who light them up and have fun
without responsibility. Ya know, someone left feedback on one of my
more modern videos saying "you're thinking way too much."
I'd like to give my response now.

The topic is on my videos about elitist paintball players, and so on. Eskimo stated that calling yourself a "Tournament player" is just a way to describe what you regularly play.

"Like how speedball would be derived from X-ball, which would be derived
from the larger woods fields. (X-ball did not evolve per say into
speedball, X-ball fields are still around. One was simply, modified into
another style, another environment)
Scenario ball players, speedballers, tournament players are all like that. Just easy ways to describe where you tend to fall."

So, my reply, with some more photos thrown in for the bloggosphere :

X-Ball was actually stolen in a way from the original USPL format from
2000. The idea was that they needed to make a paintball match last a
pre-set amount of time for TV purposes. A normal paintball match could
go for 30 - 45 seconds, which is bad for TV. When viewed in this light,
a lot of decisions made for paintball make a lot more sense.

video platform
 video management
 video solutions
 video player

Back in the 1980's paintball had a reputation as a survivalist war game. (click here for a "Nightline" video) Keep in mind we also had "grampa Reagan" in office and being a
red-blooded ass-kicker was part and parcel of being a citizen here. As
we turned the corner into the 90's, and we had Bush Sr. ("I'm NOT a
wimp!") paintball decided it needed to be a "kinder, gentler" sport.
(any old guys will laugh at that, anyone younger than 20 won't get it,
but that's cool) the reason being that the powers that be decided
paintball needed to be on TV. Why? MONEY! TV brings in ad dollars,
tie ins, and all that.

A little more set-up too. Back in the 80's the game was radically
different. At $1 a tube of 10 rounds, you can imagine ROF was out the
window compared to today. Games varied from field to field, but for the
most part it was 45 minute games on 4-5 acre fields. When you got shot
out, it sucked. I won't deny that. Especially if it was in the first
10 minutes of a long campers match. SC Village claims to have invented
speedball (along with the second coming of Christ, but let's not go
there) but a lot of fields created similar playing areas. The idea was
it was a time killer, really. You got shot out of the main match, you
jump into the "speedball" arena and take revenge on the other team for a
while.

To that end, most of the speedball arenas were created to showcase woods
skills in some way or another. Snakes are supposed to simulate
crawling lanes, for example. Hyperball was the first commercially
available pre-made field, and it was industrial grade PVC pipes. Reason
given was "it's more like trees" (reality : It's cheap and easy to
get.) But most fields literally threw hay bales in a somewhat mirrored
pattern and called it the speedball course. Ok, moving on.

So most of the 90's was used to do anything, and everything, to make
paintball TV friendly. Tournaments banned camouflage from being worn.
In fact, my favorite "GAWD-Awful" image from paintball's past is in the
1993 JT Catalog :

Yep, people wanted this setup.

It was in 1994 that paintball spent a lot of money to put the game on
ESPN. And in 1995 they did it again to a massive flop, and ESPN said
"We don't want your kind here no more" and that was pretty much that for
a decade.

ESPN the Magazine Fall, 2001 Issue 4.17 Page 152, under the title "Rejected X"

But I'm getting of topic and losing most of 'yall with the "wall of
words". Point I'm getting at is that the game really hasn't evolved as
much as it's been changed to try to cram it into places it doesn't
belong. All along the way, the powers that be try to keep a foot in the
past too, trying to keep the crawling lanes from woodsball into the
X-ball arena but it really doesn't fit. So I would argue that
paintball's derivative forms such as X-Ball, scenario, woods, speedball
and so on are really the same game with only a few variations. A
talented speedball player could hold their own in the woods, and a
talented woods player can do the same on an x-ball field.

Which, bringing this back to the elitism, is ultimately where I have my
problem with players who say "I'm a tournament player." Dude, you play
the same game I do but you shoot 5X the paint and you think you deserve
something for that. Check your ego at the door and come pound some dirt
with me in the woods using a renter. Oh, you're above that? Thought
so. One of the things I liked about this one in paticular is for milsim players, it's VERY similar to military MRE's, but a heck of a lot easier to get a hold of. Arguably more legal too, actually... Starting a new segment for this year, "Lunch Break" will be full-blown reviews of MRE's easily available for the civilian market. Mostly for paintball players, but if you're into camping or hiking, this might be of interest to you too!

MUD2MMO : Hardcore VS Casual Gamers

But, I'm ahead of myself.

On WDR's youtube page I've been doing angry rants for the last few weeks. The reaction to them has been, well, explosive for my usual numbers. 800-1500 views per video, which for my stuff is pretty good actually. But I've been getting a LOT of flack from the viewers from those. "Too angry" "Too ranty" "Can't you make tactics videos again? I don't like the new Tyger."

So I did a video showing some techniques that transfer to paintball. As of this typing, less than 350 views and it's over a week old. It's possible that the fact that it's "lazer tag" has turned people off of it, but I don't think that's what it is.

Once again, you people say you want one thing, and the numbers say something else. You want "angry Tyger" because it's funny or lulzy. You want "More tacticool" because it's making fun of people. You want angry tirages (originally typod that but I like this spelling better) yelling at tourney players for being stupid and shortsighted.

Why? Well I'm up for ideas but I've got a few of my own. One of which being a societal one. We're not allowed to be angry anymore. We can't hate anyone or anything, or we get a "peace and love" message crammed down our throats. "Don't hate", "Just tolerate", all that. So seeing someone else angry, even superficially angry, lets you live vicariously through that rage and share it. But I'm open to ideas.

Anger is not content, it's hollow. Many people have accused me of making videos to "get hits" or to get popular. You can choose to believe this or not, but I really have passed the point of caring enough about paintball players to care if I get subscribers and views on that channel. If you want swearing, go watch Mike's stuff. If you want anger, go watch AVGN. If you want to see people full of themselves there's dozens of people on youtube with self-inflating channels bragging how awesome they are at paintball and life. You can't swing a random dead animal online without hitting one.

To be honest, the gaming shows are worth more to me on several levels. But even there, people want anger, and I'm not gonna give it to them either. I know it'll mean that the show won't get as "popular" as other shows, but I'd rather do a quality show than have 5 minutes of weekly empty rage. Quality takes longer, but it's much more satisfying. And if I can make an informative show that gets people thinking or talking, that makes me happier than gratuitous swearing.

So to wrap this up. You tell me one thing, I see another. The numbers simply do not lie. So my choices are to listen to the numbers, or follow my own path. I'd rather make good videos with some content or at least a lesson to take away from it rather than 5 minutes of rage. But, I'll tell you what. If you want that, I'll record a video of nothing but swearing and demolishing boards for 5 minutes. You'll love it, it'll get thousands of hits, but it won't make me feel any better. Just sayin'.

MUD2MMO : "Wizard of Speed and Time" movie review!

I had a long post, but I know the interwebs have the attention span of a ferret drinking Mountain Dew. So I'll TRY to be brief.

Ghostcrawler's post made me want to reach through the screen and smack whoever that was. I don't care if he's the head of the dev team and putting out a persona, abusing the hell out of your customer base isn't cool.

PvP is crammed down your throat. There are several achievements and in-game rewards that can not be accessed any other way. "School of Hard Knocks" is required if you want the title "Matron/Patron" and want to get the achievements involved. And "Darkmoon Defender" as well if you want tickets for the faire. And the fact is that at level 85, what else is there to do for these players? The daily cap is 25, so after that then what? Dungeons? Sure, but the better (and faster) rewards are given to PvP.

So when I read "Ghostcrawler" say "so even if you don’t care for PvP now, maybe we can get you interested in the future." that, to me, is a NOT SO SUBTLE HINT that the dev team is focusing on the PvP player base. I may be jaded as a "casual player". I may be jaded because, as a hunter, PvP sucks when all any toon has to do is run up into your face and rip the gun out of your hands. I may also be jaded because last night I spent 90 seconds shooting an AFK player without scratching his armor, only to have him come back and obliterate me in 5 seconds based solely on gear.

Once a trigger jockey, always a trigger jockey. Wanna make hunters PvP interesting? Gimme a sniper rifle, the ability to shoot significantly more than 40M, a 10 second cool down on it and a ghillie in game, I'll show you what "hunters" should be in PvP.

I may also be jaded by the elitist gamer culture that I see rampant in this very thread. case in point :

Heaters
i read this topic, saw a terribad pve'er complaining, and smiled. LET PVP REIGN SUPREME IN MOP.
ADAPT OR BE LEFT BEHIND

And this is the mentality of PvP players. "OMG L2P!!!" Well teach me. "LURN 4 URSELF NOOB!!!!" So what are you doing so I can learn how to do that too? "FIGRE IT OUT 4 URSELF!!!!" repeat ad-nauseum.

Personally, I do not like the direction that WoW is taking with Mists. I do not like that I need to have a full command of knowledge on how to stack resilience to wade through damage like gnats. I do not enjoy being demolished by people who simply have better gear than I do and the "skill" of playing the numbers better, and not because they have superior tactics. And I think there's nearly 2 million subscribers who agree with me and have already spoken with their wallets.
Musical Interlude : Aerosmith "Fallin in Love (is hard on the knees)" video review!

If you're not on the TGWTG forum, you're missing out on a lot of fun collabs going on, and this is one of them. ScooterMike challenged a lot of the reviewers to make reviews of Michael Bay music videos. This is Aerosmith's "Fallin in Love (is hard on the knees)".

I need to say this, and here is as good a place as any

I just did a quest chain for the first time as an alliance toon. I'd
done this storyline from the Horde side a few times, but this was the
first time I got to see it from this side of the fight. The quest is
"Return To Angrathar", and it's part of a rather epic quest line that
ultimately used to end with "The Battle for Undercity". More on that in
a few. The quest ends with a pretty cool cinematic, which I'll be kind
enough to post here for it's raw epicness. It'll also bring you up to
speed on the quest chain, or at least give you "The story so far" in a
way.

But after this cinematic... That's it. Story line OVER.

tl/dr : this ending sucks.

The long explanation. Without the next few quests, there's a LOT of dangling problems here. I'm no red-shirt guy,
but storyline wise this has created a huge consistency problems. Not
to mention that Alexstrasza atill beckons you to come ot her, but only
to re-show you the cinematic. This ending is, well, unsatisfactory at
best.

The lack of an epic quest like "Battle for Undercity"
aside, the storyline as it is now is just lacking. Honestly, it
wouldn't take much for Blizzard to have made several workarounds to this
whole thing. I'm going WAY far out there, bear with me.

We can start with a lampshading of the chronological problems of
Northrend and Outlands. This would be pretty simple to address, simply
have a keeper of time on the docks and the zeppelin bays. They could
explain that it is of vital importance to go back in time and assure
that things happen as they need to happen in the past to preserve the
future. Problem solved. Heck, make it a plot point where you HAVE to
talk to the keeper of time before you can go in there, at least then
it's a speedbump that everyone slows down over and those interested
could READ it.

Second idea would be a simple phasing issue. Phase the world for the
player so they could do the last 5 quests of the chain, including battle
for undercity. THEN add one more quest at the tail end, reporting to a
keeper of time, and they could simply "correct" time, and you'd be back
in Cata world and happy to know that you preserved the timeline as
needed. And this could be done raid-party style in that "you begin this
last part of the chain, you may not do any other quests until you are
finished." Heck CHROMIE is in the region of this quest! You could talk to her (it?) to initiate this as a chain too!

REALLY! She wouldn't mind doing it!

Third is just a storytelling issue. If someone handed you a copy of, oh
I'll choose something properly geeky here, "The Empire Strikes Back"
and the last 20 minutes were removed, then a lot of "Return of the Jedi"
simply wouldn't make sense. (spoilers here folks, you've been warned)
Like the wholse scene where Luke calls Vader "father", or Why Lando is
working with the rebels or... Ok you get the idea. They could have
found a better way to wrap up the loose ends other than hacking them off
with a machete. That's all I'm saying.

And yes, I CAN do better, thank you for asking. My JOB is to write
schlock like this, I can do it in my sleep. I call those my nightmares.
Blizzard has told me they don't want decent writers, so heck with
them. And if they steal this idea, they could give me some game time as
a thank you, but I won't expect it. Nobody ever thanks the guy who
actually SOLVES these problems.

The Battle for Undercity (Horde / Alliance)
had been one of the highest rated quests in the game. Seriously, it
was the quest you looked forward to doing. You worked your tail off,
grinded through almost two dozen quests to get there, and it was a quest
you FELT like you just changed the world by completing. It also gave
some rare insight to the motivations of the leaders of the horde and
alliance. And now, just gone, cut off because they didn't take 5
minutes to think about it.

I play WOW for the story, and honestly this is more than a little
disappointing. It's quite the storyline to get wrapped up in and then
ultimately let down. I know that video games lately have this trend to
make sucktastic endings, but this is pretty much the ultimate one for
WOW. You guys can do better than this, I'm shocked you refuse to.

RELUCTANTLY I can understand abandoning this storyline, it doesn't fit
with the Cata world because, in part, it involves THRALL who is now
indisposed elsewhere. But on the other hand, Battle of Undercity was
widely held as one of the best quests in the game. To trash it seems to
be a waste, and a needless one at that. And far too many players will
just roll over and say "oh well, it was cool, but they'll never put it
back in." I think I demonstrated how htey could, if they chose to, but
unless we demand it, they won't.
