Italian Translation needed! Without the use of online translators?

I need to figure out how to say following in the simplest form without the use of an online translator:

When I was three years old, I wanted to be an ice-cream man. I thought I could have all the free ice-cream in the world. When I was about 8 years old, I decided that I wanted to be a lawyer or a psychiatrist because they made a lot of money. When I was old enough to work, I started working in an office as a secretary. I had many jobs since then. At my last job I was the boss in an office. I quit working there and moved to Santa Cruz to go back to college.

Now I am a senior and I will be graduating next week. It took 11 years to finish, but I am finally doing it. My friends, my husband’s mom and dad and my dad are coming to see me and we will all go out to dinner. My mother is very ill and cannot come which makes me sad. I will be the first one in my family with a college degree.

During the summer I will be traveling to Europe for my vacation and for a wedding in Italy. After summer I will be moving to San Francisco with my husband and a friend. I want to go back to school and earn my master’s degree, but not in theater. I would like to work as a therapist for couples and their problems.

Peter Lauer answers:

??? is almost wrong (maybe used an online translator).
This is my translation – trust me, it’s all correct (I suppose you are a woman; if not, tell me and I will change the translation):

Ora sono all’ultimo anno [we don't have a word to say "senior", we just say "I'm attending the last year"] e mi laureerò la prossima settimana.

Dopo l’estate mi traferirò a San Francisco con mio marito ed un amico (if the friend is a male) / un’amica (if the friend is a female). Voglio tornare a scuola e fare un master [we don't say "earn a master’s degree" but just "attend a master"], ma non in teatro. Mi piacerebbe lavorare come terapista di coppia e risolvere i problemi (delle coppie).

what would you choose on this case i need advice?

I’m 18, and i’m tired of living with my parents so i’m moving out. I also miss my old city back in san francisco. I make $4200 a month, and i already own my car.

What would you do?

1. Rent your own apartment $1300?

or

2. Rent a room and share a luxury condo with a roommate she’s 30 and a professional so no prob and it’s in downtown sf with great views (pool, jacuzzi, gym, home theater and security 24/7) $1500?

Peter Lauer answers:

If 1,300 is including your bills electricity etc, then get your own place, there’s nothing like having privacey when you want it, being able to take friends back to your place and having the use of the whole place not just kinda one room !! why would a 30 yr old want 18/20 year olds wandering around the place? surely they would be more likely to have friends/lovers to stay nearer their own age and might find it uncomfortable after a while with an 18 yr old indoors !To me it would be like sharing with my son ! Do yourself a favour, have your own space, where you can decorate it how you want, run around naked if you want to, live in your own home how you want to without it possibly affecting a friendship..remember an apartment is your home renting a room is in someone elses home ! Whatever you do I hope your very happy with your choice.

Does my male friend of 4 years have an interest in me? How deep does he care about me?

I have a friend that I met initially by walking into his dept. store when I worked at the other establishment on the opposite side of town. He noticed me before I noticed him kind of thing, 3 1/2-4 years back. I knew a friend of mine who worked at the same dept. store as “M” did, and asked him to get the opinion of “M” about me. “M” said he wanted to take things slow and see where things go. Soon after wards I graduated from high school and had professional photos taken. I gave him a few of them; later finding out this whole time and up until this day he has all my graduation photos still in his wallet. A little odd if we are just friends correct?

We have gone to San Francisco a couple times by car, and Reno as well. Just last year I was over at his house and watching some music videos. He was a little tipsy but I was completely sober. He started dancing and then grinding when he was dancing, he later sat me on his bed and kissed me, and tried to do more. I told him no because he was drunk. Is it true that alcohol tells no lies?

Earlier this year, “M” invited me to the store but I politely said, “No thanks, I’m good” because I was talking to his sister. “Come on Jackie, let’s go!” “No M, I’m good, I’m comfy and I’m having a good conversation right now.” “Are you coming or not?” “No thanks,” His sister noticed he wasn’t too happy at the time but I was like okay, but why? Thinking he’ll get over it sooner or later. He came back from the store, but not really talking to me. This summer his mom was in living room, we were all sitting down and she pretty much ratted out “M”. Explaining about the store incident where I didn’t go that one time. After I had left that night, he told his mom how upset he was that I didn’t go with him, and later crying about it. He was like, “Mom stop! She didn’t need to know it. It’s in the past. She didn’t need to know!” His mom always says, “M, stop lying! You love Jackie. Jackie stop lying, you love my son. Y’all make a cute couple. You said it yourself “M” before about how Jackie is the only one who cares and loves you. The girl needs to know! He don’t be looking or talking to no one else.” He always gets embarrassed, smiling at the same time.

Then once again a few weeks back I went over for a quick visit and right when I walked in the door he did the same thing, grinding on me, dancing on me…all that crazy stuff.

And just recently while at the movie theater watching Avatar, with my right leg propped up from an injury at work, and my left one bent at the knee in front of me. “M” whispers in my left ear, “Dang, looks like you’re going into labor.” Now what does child labor have to do with Avatar? Makes no sense!

His mom from pretty much from day one has called me her daughter-in-law, and how she wishes I would have a child with her son. Also whenever he gets into an argument with his parents, M says, “Well I’ll just go move in with Jackie!” His mother’s response, “I’ll help you pack!” And he denies ever saying that, but his mom says otherwise.

But, after all we are just friends. What do you think is going on with his mind? Greatly appreciate your thoughts and opinions!!!
And yes, I have asked him out every year except this year because he kept shooting me down. “We are only friends. You deserve a guy so much better than me, why me?” he would ask in the past.

And oh yeah, I am a student pilot and working at the airport for an airline temp. A year ago, he thought I was crazy for working around aircraft, now he just got hired on and wants to work the same shifts as me and wants to work close to me gate wise. And always on a lunch or break he will stop by my ticket counter and hangout or ask when do I get a break. Do I want something to eat/drink as well. Everyday he asks me if I’m working or not.

Peter Lauer answers:

Please ask him in private whether he loves you. If he says “no”, well great, you have your answer. If he says “yes”, ask him 1 day’s time.

That day, kindly, please, without any delay, ask your heart a question and feel an honest answer from it – do you LOVE “M”?

If M were to permanently go away today, and you knew you could see him just one last time, what would you do?

If your heart cries at that very thought in the mind, bloody hell MARRY M ASAP and make SOME KIDS DAMMIT. Else, no issues, tell M you don’t feel the same way, he’ll understand. Please don’t keep him on the hook. That is the worst injustice you can do to a man. The worst.

Talent show ideas for a beauty pageant?

Hi,
I am entering a beauty pageant and they have asked me to do something which should atleast last for 3-4 minutes for the talent part. Yikes, i am freaking out! I have done dance and sung in school theater with a group but never alone on the stage! Plus, I really dont think I can sing solo, since i can get pretty off-key! All I do these days is study which leaves pretty little time for anything else, 17 units load and Chem is pretty exhausting!

I am not afraid of being on the stage, I just dont know what I can do for the talent show part. Is there someone out in the Bay area or even in San Francisco that can coach?

Some of the other girls are dancing, singing, doing a monologue, I can’t think of anything. I reaallly realllyyy wanna do well in this show since the prizes are amazing.

Any ideas for what I can do….PLEASE Help.

Peter Lauer answers:

Try singing with playing an instrument (like guitar), I think the judges will love that talent! Spend your free time practicing, like you said the prizes are amazing so do your best for those prizes. You can always dance with your friends but maybe they won’t agree on that but you can always ask your friends to be your background singers also, you can always look at videos of the dance steps or what they do when their singing so you don’t need a coach for just 1 show. Good luck!

What are my odds of getting into a Claremont?

I’m going to be a senior in high school next year, and Pitzer College is my dream school. I toured it last spring and fell completely in love with it, but the Claremonts are ridiculously hard to get in to – Pitzer’s acceptance rate is less than 25%. Can anyone who works in admissions or who got accepted into a Claremont let me know if I stand a chance?

I have a 3.84 cumulative GPA.

I scored 2070 on my SAT (760 reading, 720 writing, 590 math)

I got a 4 on the AP World History test and 5′s on the AP English Language & Composition and the AP U.S. History tests.

I’m taking five AP classes next year (French, Calculus AB, English Literature, Biology, and Economics).

I’m active in my Youth Group and go on mission trips every summer to build houses on an Indian Reservation and every fall to hand out homeless kits and work in the food bank in San Francisco.

I’ve played softball for the past three years and plan on playing it my senior year.

I was in the fall play last year and I’m planning on doing it again this fall.

I work in the nursery at my church every Sunday.

I’m currently working at the box office at a movie theater.

Do I stand a chance? I feel like my GPA and my SAT math score aren’t high enough to get in…

Peter Lauer answers:

Presuming 3.84 is your unweighted GPA, you definitely have a chance. The Claremont’s are very desirable schools, so yes there acceptance rates are low, but you are in the ballpark. Make sure your essays and LORs look spectacular and you may be accepted.

Be sure though, that you also apply to some safety and match schools, since the acceptance rates are so low. Pitzer may be a dream, but I’m 100% sure, that there are tens or hundreds of other schools where you can be very happy and get a great education.

I need ideas on what I should do for the talent part of a beauty pageant?

Hi,
I am entering a beauty pageant and they have asked me to do something which should atleast last for 3-4 minutes for the talent part.

Any ideas for what I can do….PLEASE Help.

Do some amazing cheerleading type dance!

But if you aren’t up for that, find a song you know really well (you know every single note) and practice until you’re word perfect – then start practicing in front of your friends and family – they will support you and tell you how to make your performance better!!

what would you do help i need your advice?

I moved 30 minutes away from home san francisco, and i really miss it i feel depressed.

However where i live is really luxurious, and i would like that same look when i move back to sf. With a pool, jacuzzi, gym, and home theater, security etc.

1. I seen a 2br/2b condo leasing for $3000 a month would you go for it if you made $6000 a month?

or

2. If you have 60k saved up would you use it as a down payment it cost 520k to buy?

Peter Lauer answers:

What do you miss about living in SF that you can’t get where you live now? I mean can’t you just do your stuff in Frisco, then drive home?
30 minutes in California means you moved 10-15 miles away.

To answer your real questions, most experts recommend no more than a third of your income go to rent/mortgage. At 6% with $60,000 down your payment would be around $2,600.00 / month
That is, if you can get away with an 11.5% down payment

Male friend of 4 years…does his actions speak an interest of more than friends?

I have a friend that I met initially by walking into his dept. store when I worked at the other one at opposite side of town. He noticed me before I noticed him kind of thing, 31/2-4 years back.

Earlier this year, “M” invited me to the store but I politely said no thanks, I’m good because I was talking to his sister.

Explaining how the store incident where I didn’t go that one time, he came back later that night, telling his mom how upset he was that I didn’t go with him and later crying about it. He was like, “Mom stop! She didn’t need to know it. It’s in the past. She didn’t need to know!” His mom always says, “M, stop lying! You love Jackie. Jackie stop lying, you love my son. Y’all make a cute couple. You said it yourself “M” before about how Jackie is the only one who cares and loves you.” He always gets embarrased, smiling at the same time, and then his nieces and nephews join in and start saying how “M” likes and loves me.

Then once again a few weeks back I went over for a quick visit and right when I walked in the door he did the same thing, grinding on me, dancing…just craziness at the time.

A few days later, while at the movie theater watching Avatar, with my right leg propped up from an injury at work and my left one bent at the knee in front of me, “M” whispers in my left ear, “Dang, looks like you’re going into labor.” Now what does child labor have to do with Avatar? Makes no sense!

His mom from pretty much from day one has called me her daughter-in-law, and how she wishes I would have a child with her son. Also whenever he gets into an arguement with his parents, M says, “Well I’ll just go move in with Jackie!” His mother’s response, “I’ll help you pack!” And he denies ever saying that, but his mom says otherwise.

But, afterall we are just friends. What do you think is going on with his mind? I’m a Libra myself, and he is a Sag born the same year, but I’m older by only a couple months. Greatly appreciate your thoughts and opinions!!!
I have asked him out every year except this year because he kept shooting me down. “We are only friends. You deserve a guy so much better than me, why me?” he would ask in the past.

And oh yeah, I am a pilot and working at the airport for an airline temp. A year ago, he thought I was crazy for working around airplanes, now he just got hired on and wants to work the same shifts as me and wants to work close to me gate wise…food for thought?

I agree with the first answerer except if he doesn’t like you in that way, it doesn’t mean he’s gay. You could be the prettiest girl in the world and a guy or two is bound not to like you that way. But from what you say he definitely sounds interested in you. I think he is just afraid of the relationship not working out resulting in his/your friendship not being the same.

Your GPA is good enough; your math score is low, but you really don’t know what will happen until you apply. All of the top schools are like going to a casino, so roll the dice and apply. Hopefully you’ll get in.

The World’s Best Orchestras?

A recent poll of music critics in Europe and North America asked for recommendations for a league table of the world’s best orchestras. The result is below. While I abhore this sort of meaningless comparison, I thought it might be interesting to get others’ opinions on who they thought might be missing from the list and who is on the list that they wouldn’t include.

It was also interesting that not a single chamber or period-instrument orchestra was mentioned – even though there are many stunningly good ones. Shame on the critics for completely ignoring them!

1. Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam
2. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
3. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
4. London Symphony Orchestra
5. Chicago Symphony Orchestra
6. Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
7. Cleveland Orchestra
8. Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra
9. Budapest Festival Orchestra
10. Dresden Staatskapelle
11. Boston Symphony Orchestra
12. New York Philharmonic Orchestra
13. San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
14. Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre Orchestra
15. Russian National Orchestra
16. St Petersburg Phillharmonic
17. Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra
18. Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York
19. Saito Kinen Symphony Orchestra, Japan
20. Czech Philharmonic Orchestra

On my part, some glaring omissions (although I would never try to put them in order!) include:

Australian Chamber Orchestra
BBC Symphony Orchestra
European Union Youth Orchestra
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (there isn’t a single orchestra from the southern heimisphere in the list)
Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (London)
Philharmonia Orchestra (London)
Royal Danish Orchestra, Copenhagen
St Paul Chamber Orchestra
Swedish Chamber Orchestra
Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich
Toronto Symphony Orchestra

Incidentally, Y!A’s prompt as to which category this question should be posted was “Food and Drink: Beer, wine and spirits”
Wow! some swift responses. I feel I can now add some of my views on those additions some of you have suggested:

The English Chamber Orchestra – actually created to be a recording orchestra (as was the Philharmonia, actually) is possibly the best-known chamber orchestra on the planet. However, as a ‘live’ ensemble they are less impressive – somewhast boring to my biased ears.
I concur with those that mentioned the revitalised Hallé. Mark Elder was undervalued for too many years, I have to say. I’m still not sure if they should be on a list of the ‘top 20′ in the world. And should they be there in preference to, say, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra?
I agree that there are too many American orchestras for a world list, although I too am surprised to see the LA Phil and San Francisco orchestras on the list instead of the still fabulous Philadelphians. I would add Montreal to my original list (perhaps in preference to Toronto).
Stefan K is right to put in a bid for the Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra in Venezuela – especially if one considers what the value of the orchestra is within that country (or continent) as a whole. It knocks the socks off most others on the list in that respect.

I would say that neither the London Philharmonic nor the Royal Philharmonic are currently in the world top 20 (not even among the best in the UK!). The Royal Scottish National Orchestra would outplay them any day. And Malcolm, I should have included the Scottish Chamber Orchestra – they are one of the best in the world of ANY kind.

However, I have to take issue with Malcolm’s Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Oh dear, of dear. One of the dangers of playing without a conductor is that 1) you have to play ‘safe’ and 2) you play like a committee. I find the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra one of the dullest orchestras I have ever heard. They can even make Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony sound boring!

I’ll be back later …
As the answers seem to have dried up now, I shall conclude and then try to pick a best answer (difficult!). Thank you all for your contributions. I’m glad I didn’t let this slip into the public vote this time!

It would seem that a general consensus (coloured by my own opinion, of course!) might be:
Orchestras on the list that don’t deserve to be there:
Saito Kinen Orchestra
Budapest Festival Orchestra (yes, it’s a pick-up band but so are the big 4 London orchestras!)
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra

I would suggest the four to replace them should be:
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
Montreal Symphony Orchestra
Philadelphia Orchestra
Philharmonia Orchestran (London)
Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra (for their amazing work and inspiration)

Stefan K: sorry I didn’t find room for some of your excellent suggestions. Maybe I’ll post a question about the best ‘non-symphony’ orchestras. That might be interesting.

I saw this poll likewise.
The glaring omission as you rightly point out,
of the London Philharmonia is frankly unforgivable.
Unless unbeknownst to me their standards have suddenly dropped in the last few years how could they not be in there.
Yet the Saito Kinen Orchestra of Japan makes the list.
Madness!
Of course I’m slightly biased being English but regardless,
seven American ensembles to our one entry?

is it tough being on your own ?? does anyone has any experience moving out from parents ?

ok so im an 18 year old guy living with my parnets in Queens ,NYC
i like living in a big city but sometimes i wish that i was on my own cause my parents drive me crazy and its really annyoing and they cna bring me down sometime

im not in college yet ,im in a GED prep classes im gonna get my GED in Dec. or Jan and i will go to college next fall to study veterinary technology
i would want to be on my own but im just afraid that im just not gonna be able to survive on my own not having a job and completed education and now that the job market is really bad
as i said i do have plans for the future i wanna become a vet tech, i love working with pets my parents know that i wanna move out but they want me to stay as long as i want and that after college i can look for my own place and the thing with that is that i wanna move to the other side of the country i wanna live in San Francisco or Los Angeles
i will want to go back to college and study either veterinary medicine or musical theater

Peter Lauer answers:

hey this is the story of every 18 year old now a days , i can share with you my friends’ story and then give my opinions on it.

there used to be a friend of mine who decided to move out at an age of 18 and moved to L.A frm New York and he decided to continue his studies there but came back after three months just because of difficulties you are talking abt. while another friend of mine passed through everything smoothly and is still living away for 10 years.

the reason is :-
you may find it very annoying and disturbed and demotivated when your parents yell at you and you may like to have a lot of freedom and independence and may want to experience sense of responsibilities of feeding yourself
but the fact is when you will move out WITHOUT job you may find a lack in quality of life and you may find it very difficult to handle with all the worldly nuisance put together on you
the fact that second friend survived was that he had many talents and many relatives to help him there.
my advice would be that you should move out only if you have some ability to do job or to make money , to make goood friends easily so that they can help you , you are not spoilt and you have some sort of help in face of relationship or friend in there .
you can try to move out and live in N.Y for a month or so and then jump because that’s what i did when i was 21 after completing my education
so its completely your decision now think hard ,decide pros and cons and then conclude what you wanna do but beware.
because you haven’t done your education
you’ll have to decide because we’re not going to suffer it’s you and only you

These wooden frames were created in San Francisco in the late 1960s by the “Diggers”, a group of artists and radicals, including the actor Peter Coyote.

The original “free frame of reference” was a twelve-foot-square free-standing frame painted yellow, through which people were invited to pass.

There were also miniature frames about 2 in X 2 in, which could be worn around the neck. The idea was to get people to think differently about society and politics by giving them a new [metaphorical] frame of reference.

Victorian Props/Back Drop/Wall Mural?

Hi Everyone,

I would like a mural (for lack of a better term) for a 12 foot wall in my home. I want it to be of a row Victorian houses–ideally the painted ladies of Steiner Street in San Francisco, and again, ideally, I would like it to be made out of wood like a facade. That may sound weird, but I have seen one such mural, and it is fabulous. I found out the person who made it did it himself, but he is unable to be located.

Where would I even begin to look to find something similar? I have seen photograph wall murals, but that’s not really what I want. Maybe a theater prop making place? I would appreciate any ideas.

People whispered for many years that U.S. presidents elected in years ending with “0″ were doomed to die in office. From 1840 through 1960, every president elected in the 20-year cycle died while he was still president. (Some called this “The Curse of Tecumseh,” after the Shawnee chieftain whose brother allegedly predicted the presidential doom in 1836.)

Ronald Reagan finally broke the “curse” by serving two full terms as president before stepping down in 1989 — though he had to survive a 1981 assassination attempt to do so.

Here’s the full roll call of 0-year presidents through George W. Bush:

1800: THOMAS JEFFERSON served two full terms, 1801-1809.

1820: JAMES MONROE served two full terms, 1817-1825.

1840: WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON was 68 years old when he delivered his inaugural address on March 3, 1841. The speech was a stemwinder, lasting an hour and 40 minutes in frigid weather, with Harrison refusing to wear a coat or hat. The new president came down with a cold which rapidly developed into pneumonia. Harrison was bedridden for a month and finally died on April 4.

1860: ABRAHAM LINCOLN was just beginning his second term when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. on the evening of April 14, 1865. Lincoln survived the night but died the next morning at a house across the street from the theater. Lincoln’s death came only six days after the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox and the end of the Civil War.

1880: JAMES GARFIELD was shot by assassin Charles Guiteau on July 2, 1881 in a Washington railway station. The shots were not immediately fatal; Garfield lived for two months before dying from complications on September 19th.

1900: WILLIAM McKINLEY was elected in 1896 and re-elected in 1900. He was attending the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York when he was shot by unemployed millworker Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901. He died a week later as a result of gangrene caused by the bullet wounds. (McKinley was replaced by Theodore Roosevelt, who a decade later was shot but not killed while trying to regain the presidency.)

1920: WARREN HARDING made a cross-country rail tour in 1923, a major undertaking for that time. Harding became the first president to visit Alaska, but while returning south to California he came down with intestinal cramps and then pneumonia. While convalescing from these illnesses Harding suffered an apparent stroke and died on August 2 in San Francisco.

1940: FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT, first elected in 1932, was beginning an unprecedented fourth term when he died in April of 1945. Worn down by years of exertion leading the country during the Great Depression and World War II, FDR suffered a cerbral hemorrhage while on a working vacation in Warm Springs, Georgia. His last words have become well known: “I have a terrific headache.”

1960: JOHN F. KENNEDY’s death has perhaps replaced Lincoln’s as the most famous presidential assassination. Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald during a motorcade through Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963. Two days later Oswald was himself shot and killed by Jack Ruby.

1980: RONALD REAGAN served two full terms, 1981-1989. He survived an assassination attempt by John Hinckley on 30 March 1981.

2000: GEORGE W. BUSH also served two full terms, from 2001-2009, thereby putting the final kibosh on Tecumseh’s Curse. He narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by a pretzel on 14 January 2002, but his administration was otherwise healthfully uneventful.

Does every performance of the Rent Broadway Tour feature Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal?

I saw it in Dallas in May and I was wondering if the performances later this year (specifically the one in San Francisco) still featured Anthony and Adam. I went to check out the ticket situation on the theater‘s website and it showed a photo of another actor in Adam Pascal’s role.

Peter Lauer answers:

Yes, I am almost positive that EVERY performance with the exception of sick days feature Adam and Anthony. Lexi Lawson is still in the cast, as well. I am pretty positive that the cast will stay the same for the entire tour. Since it’s called the 2009 tour and contracts have to be a certain length of time, The tour will probably end when Adam and Anthony decided not to renew their contracts. Hope this helps!

Peter Lauer answers:

University of California, San Francisco only offers graduate-level degrees.

UC admission evaluation is based on a variety of factors. All UCs favor students with rigorous HS curriculum (high number of a-g and UC-approved honors/AP/IB/CC courses), excellent weighted and unweighted GPA, and stellar SAT/ACT scores. You are also compared to your peers, meaning your academic and extracurricular achievements are viewed in context of students in your HS and the general applicant pool in the year you apply.

Berkeley is general achievement oriented (academic and extracurricular) and the campus is especially interested in students who will take advantage of what Berkeley has to offer and become the agent of social change.

The rest of the UCs are academic achievement oriented, meaning excellent grades and stellar test scores are essential to be competitive.

You can see the profiles of admitted students to every UC campus (detailed breakdown of GPA, SAT, ACT, and other statistics) at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/index.html (click on the campus name, then “Freshman Admission Profile,” then “Detailed Freshman Admission Profile (PDF)” to see the stats in a chart). This will give you an idea of how competitive you should aim to be for admission to each UC campus.

help with economic about Externalities?

4. A local drama company proposes a new neighborhood theater in San Francisco. Before approving the building permit, the city planner completes a study of the theater’s impact on the surrounding community.
a. One finding of the study is that theaters attract traffic, which adversely affects the community. The city planner estimates that the cost to the community from the extra traffic is $5 per ticket. What kind of an externality is this? Why?
a. positive Externalities
b. negative Externalities

b. Graph the market for theater tickets, labeling the demand curve, the social-cost curve, the supply curve, the social-cost curve, the market equilibrium level of output, and the efficient level of output. Also show the per-unit amount of the externality

c. Upon further review, the city planner uncovers a second externality. Rehearsals for the plays tend to run until late at night, with actors, stagehands, and other theater members coming and going at various hours. The planner has found that the increased foot traffic improves the safety of the surrounding streets, an estimated benefit to the community of $2 per ticket. What kind of externality is this? Why?
a. positive Externalities
b. negative Externalities
d. On a new graph, illustrate the market for theater tickets in the case of these two externalities. Again, label the demand curve, the social-value curve, the supply curve, the social-cost curve, the market equilibrium level of output, the efficient level of output, and the per-unit amount of both externalities.

Stimulus…or smut-ulus?

Stimulus money for the National Endowment for the Arts is supposed to be “restricted specifically to job preservation. ” Looks like the stimulus money is being used for much more than we thought. Here’s a small excerpt:

· $25,000 to CounterPulse in San Francisco, California that just held this past Saturday (July 25th) “Perverts Put Out” which urges one to “Join your fellow pervs for some explicit, twisted fun!”. The picture accompanying the announcement is a nude man onstage at a microphone.

and this one where the theater owes back taxes…

· $25,000 to Borderlands Theater Teatro Fronterizo, Inc. in Tucson, Arizona is delinquent in paying federal taxes (see here, last item at the bottom of the page). Recently did “School of the Americas” about Che Guevara and has upcoming “WHAT’S UNDER THAT SKIRT? A BORDERLINE LOOK AT GENDER” and “SHE WAS MY BROTHER”.

Where are the smut-ulus police?
