The Register is reporting that Peter Gabriel's web server was stolen. The pop icons website first went offline late Sunday night, May 4, 2008 when a thief left his web hosting company with a number of servers. As of right now PeterGabriel.com is hosting a slim down site with the message that they are working to restore the website to normal as soon as possible. The website was apparently being hosted by a UK company called Rednet Ltd.

<dc:subject>General News</dc:subject>

Communication and Internet provider, Comcast is considering placing transfer limits on their Internet subscribers. This would help ease the burden on their network. Comcast has roughly 14.1 million subscribers with a small percentage (less than .001%) using a large percentage of the network bandwidth by using file downloading, Peer to Peer programs (P2P). The initial plan, according to DSL Reports is:
... all users get a 250GB per month cap. Users would get one free "slip up" in a twelve month period, after which users would pay a $15 charge for each 10 GB over the cap they travel.
Initial testing is planned in a month or two.

From time to time everyone needs some motivation or maybe an extra push towards excellence. Success Magazine just released their choices for the 50 Greatest Entrepreneurs of All Time. The list is divided up into categories including Finance, Industry and Retail. The categories I was most interested in is Technology (which included the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates) and the Internet. The Greatest Internet Entrepreneurs includes Jeff Bezos (the founder of Amazon) and, Larry Page and Sergey Brin the founders of Google. The Google founders happen to be the same age as me (born in 1973), looks like I have a lot of catching up to do ;-)

Each category includes 4 or 5 people with a short paragraph for each with a synopsis of their accomplishments. It's a great read.

<dc:subject>General News</dc:subject>

After further review HostPapa has updated their shared web hosting plan to have unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space. This is up from their recent change (from last week) of 17,000 GB bandwidth and 1,700 GB disk space. There is no increase in price for this upgrade and it effects all existing and new customers.

Just remember as with other shared and unlimited hosting plans from other web providers, this does not include using excess server processing power.

Check out our review for more information on Host Papa.

<dc:subject>General News</dc:subject>

According to The New York Times, data centers are huge polluters of today's environment. Currently data centers produce more carbon dioxide emissions than Argentina or the Netherlands and is just under the carbon emissions of Malaysia. The study by McKinsey & Company also projects power hungry data centers will surpass the airline industry as greenhouse gas emitters by 2020. The total carbon dioxide emissions of the worlds data centers as of 2008 is 0.3 percent. For comparison, the airline industry is at 0.6 percent and steel plants are at 1.0 percent.

Web hosting providers are starting to realize their impact and some hosts are starting to do something about it. Host Papa is currently are only reviewed web host that buys green certificates from Certified Green Renewable Energy Sources.
According to CBC News Microsoft withdrawed its bid to buy Yahoo. The reason given was the two sides couldn't agree on a sale price. Microsoft's latest offer was $33 per share, making the total $47.5 billion US. This is $2 more per share and roughly $3 billion more than Microsoft's original offer. Yahoo wanted $37 per share.

Before Microsoft original offer Yahoo's stock price was just under $20 per share, Lately it has been in the $26 to $29 range in anticipation of the potential sale.
