Google Now Indexes External Resources Loaded in Flash

Google announced it has expanded its Flash indexing functionality by now indexing files that are loaded externally by Flash on a website.

In regards to Adobe Flash, Google also indexes AS1, AS2 and AS3 Action Scripts as well as any text content that a user may interact with as they click buttons or use other input tools (Googlebot mimics user input). The Googlebot also attempts to discover any links in Flash files.

Google has definitely made it a lot easier this past year for websites with Flash embedded, to get more information indexed into the search engine. Besides the odd header, image viewer or logo of a site I still do not recommend a Flash based website to my clients unless, getting as much traffic from the internet as possible is not important to them.

Twitter and Internet Explorer Problems

Anyone else having problems trying to use Twitter in Internet Explorer today? I've tried IE 6 to IE 8 and an getting a File Download - Security Warning dialogue box that says unknown file type and asks me if I want to open it. I can seem to view all other websites fine in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

When I tried Google Chrome and Firefox I am having no problems viewing and using Twitter.

Strange!

The Future of Shared Hosting

The post on Matt Heaton's blog is a little old but it is worth a mention since it is some exciting news for customers of BlueHost and HostMonster. Hosting has come a long way in a few short years. Prices have dropped while resources have increased, now days you wouldn't be hard pressed to find shared hosting around the $5 mark per month. What has hampered shared hosting and what Matt Heaton and his team of developers has almost fixed is resource allocation in a shared hosting environment. In the current shared Linux hosting environmentit is hard to determine the usage of resources by a particular user so servers at any time can slow to a crawl by just one website hogging all of the resources.

Matt and his team has spent 3 years and thousands of hours working on this issue and now are able to track and manage CPU resources and Disk I/O resources on a per user basis.

We have spent considerable time and money modifying the linux kernel and userspace applications (MySQL, Apache, etc) to report exactly which user is responsible for cpu and i/o usage in real time. Lets give an example - Lets say we have user “matt” that does a MySQL query that take 2 minutes to complete (clock time) and 90 seconds of real CPU time to complete (Actually number of CPU seconds required to complete the query). When MyQL passes the query to specific thread to be serviced we start tracking for that particular user the EXACT cpu time that was used, and the exact number of system reads and writes as well as device specific reads and writes. We can use this to track and slow down the extremely heavy users in real time so that the server is calm and available for everyone to use.

This means a website now can only use the resources allocated to it, the user is contained much like in a Virtual Private Server environment (VPS) but at less cost. No more can one website make an entire server of websites come to a standstill.

In most cases a website that hogs resources is not done intentionality, maybe Google is suddenly sending the site more traffic and the user didn't realize it. This way, not only is the other websites on the server protected but the user will be informed of any changes to his resource use as it happens as well.

Service Pack 2 for Vista and Server 2008 is Here

My Nod32 Antivirus notified me that I had some Windows updates that needed installing, and to my surprise it is the often delayed Windows Service Pack 2. The final release of Service Pack 2 for Vista and Server 2008 is finally here. Web hosts, it's time to update those Window Servers!

Go Daddy Recommends Stronger Internet Security

Web host and domain registrar, Go Daddy, testified Thursday in front of a Congressional subcommittee. It was in regards to the continued relationship between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the U. S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). Go Daddy recommended that the Joint Partnership Agreement (JPA) which is set to expire Sept. 30, 2009, be extended between these two entities. ICANN is responsible to administer the entire worlds web address system. Go Daddy is worried ICANN can not operate independent of NTIA oversight, because it

may be vulnerable to “capture by another government, international organization, or business that does not have a secure and stable Internet as its top priority.”
