Choosing The Right Colors for your Website

We have already gone through the important points to be noted for the development of a website- Design,Technical, Content and Quality guidelines. Now, let me share with you something interesting and different. i.e., choosing the right color combination to your website. The color scheme you choose for your website is as important as the content and design.

As we all know, each color has its own effect on us, physically and mentally. Some studies have proved that red color has very strong impact on us. It can even raise your blood pressure. It is interesting that in Casinos, they use red lights because people gamble more in red light!! But, blue color is having the opposite effect; it calms down our mind. So, we can conclude that there exist particular emotions and meanings associated with each color. But certain colors represent opposite emotions. For example, black color represents power & strength as well as evil & depression. Any way, I personally don’t prefer black color ;-)

Is this the only reason for choosing the right color scheme to your website?? There are some more things to be considered.

•Creating Brand Awareness: Many companies already have their own color patterns and schemes. So, while developing a website, it is better to use the same color scheme. This can build up good brand awareness.

•Website Type: This is a major factor to decide the exact color combination. Suppose you are developing website for a business, website may be blue or white. Green color is also preferable for businesses/ corporate as it represents power and money.

•Who visits your website: If your target audience is young and vibrant, you may use red, orange etc. Suppose your website is more visited by senior citizens or those with vision troubles, better you go for grey or black& white color pattern. Colors are preferred according to gender also. Thus, men tend to prefer blue and orange to red and yellow, while women prefer red to blue and yellow to orange.

Some Facts and Studies

There are colors associated with shopping!! It is said that certain colors make people react differently while shopping. So, this can be taken under consideration while building an E-commerce website. Normal people respond better to sky blue, pink etc. Those who insist on budget while shopping will like teal, navy and pink. But, impulse buyers tend to respond to blue, black, red-orange etc. Also, free yourself from prejudices: if you are addressing to women, do not automatically employ pink.

If your website addresses an audience larger than your country of origin or it is meant to attract prospects from a specific country, research the specific meanings of colors in different nations. White is considered as color of peace in Western countries, but it stands for unhappiness in China, Japan and India. Pink is very much appreciated in Japan, but is considered as non-manly color in India. It is up to you to obtain creative colors that will be internationally accepted, but you have to do your homework quite well.

Your website can be hard to read, making visitors to become uncomfortable and close the page altogether. First of all, the text color should stand out from the background color. If the text color doesn’t contrast with background color, it will be unreadable.

Use a natural palette of colors.

They are more pleasing than any of their artificial counterparts. You may start with say, three base colors that are related or similar and those don’t contrast with each other and two colors that contrast with the base colors. Then, adjust the brightness, hue, or saturation of color to get the best combination that works best for your website.

Now you might have realized the importance of color scheme in websites. Take enough time to choose the right color combination that conveys your company’s brand, goal and message. Choosing a wrong schema has its own negative impact on your website. So, what I wish to tell you is just break the rules and think out of the box! Don’t be afraid to use any color combination, which you think can produce positive color.

Meaning of Colors

•Red: energy, passion, excitement, power, aggression, danger.
•Blue: coolness, spirituality, freedom, patience, loyalty, trustworthiness, sadness, depression.
•Yellow: light, optimism, happiness, brightness, joy.
•Green: life, naturalness, restfulness, health, wealth, prosperity, decay, toxicity.
•Orange: friendliness, warmth, approachability, energy, playfulness, courage.
•Violet: wisdom, sophistication, celebration.
•White: purity, cleanliness, youth, freshness, peace.
•Black: power, elegance, secrecy, mystery, evil.
•Gray: security, maturity, reliability.
•Pink: romance a feminine color.
•Brown: comfort, strength, stability, credibility.

In my previous posts, we came across the Design, Technical and Content Guidelines. Now, let us see what all Quality Guidelines are to be followed:

• Remember- we are making websites primarily for users and not for search engines. It is not good to present different content to search engines than you provide to users. This is referred commonly as “cloaking”.

• It is better you avoid tricks that improve your search rankings. Just provide your users something which you would have given evenif the search engines didn’t exist.

• Using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the preferred way of separating content from style in quality web pages. With CSS, you can store all style information for your web site in one single document. All major browsers have support for both the CSS 1 and CSS 2 standards. Using CSS will improve the quality of your web site and increases the readability for many different browsers. It will also greatly reduce your web site development costs.

• Avoid links to web spammers on the web that adversely affects your search ranking itself. Also, it is better you don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your Page Rank.

• Using unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings etc s not recommended by Google. Google doesn’t recommend the use of products hat send automatic or programmatic queries to it.

• Avoid hidden text or hidden links and don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects. Avoid sending automated queries to Google.

• A validator is a software program that can check your web pages against the web standards. When using a validator to check HTML, XHTML or CSS documents, the validator returns a list of errors found, according to your chosen standard.

• Your website should not be a keyword-stuffed one. Also, there should not be any duplicate content.

• Don't create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, Trojans etc.

• If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

In this blog, we will see the guidelines that have to be followed while preparing website content. Hope you have gone through my previous posts- Design Guidelines and Technical Guidelines.
• Every page should be focused on a particular topic, if possible. If you have different products or services, better you discuss about each one in different pages. In this way, your products/ services will get noticed more than if they were listed in a single page.

• Like unique pages, you should contain unique page titles that give an overview of your service / product. So don’t forget to write accurate, relevant page titles.

• Give attention to the “description” meta tag. Surely the search engines will look at the “keywords” meta tag. But if you could write a unique and pointed “description” meta tags for every page, it will create a great impact much than the “keywords” meta tag. So remember- a well-crafted description can persuade searches to click your link.

• More often you add good content to your website (articles, latest news, blog posts etc.); more often crawlers will visit your website. The benefit will be seen when you add a new product or service. The crawlers will find and index your page soon.

• It is more time consuming and tiring for eyes to read from computer screens. So, try to make the content simple and clear. Avoid jargon and complex sentences in your website. Using short words and active phrases can also be considered as a good technique.

• The website content has to be written for your visitors first, I agree. But remember- search engines are also reading your website. So, try to include as much keywords as possible while trying to make your website content simple and easy to understand by people. Please don’t make your website a keyword-stuffed one.

• Assigning single and unique idea to each paragraph will help your website visitors to scan through your web page content. Also, they will more likely move on to the next paragraph, hopefully thinking there is some usable kind of information.

• It is better to follow a ‘Front-load content strategy in website content also. I.e., putting the conclusion first and then explaining how and why. This will help people to quickly scan through the opening sentence and to decide whether to read the rest content.

• Boldening important words which describe main point will also makes your website content readable.

• Using lists will help readers to read the information vertically. Also lists are easier to scan and less intimidating.

• Left-aligned text is easier to read than a justified one. Normally center-aligned and justified text makes reading very slow. So, readers may skip the content if it is time consuming.

Here we come across some technical points to be noted while developing a website:
• If you use fancy features like JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash, search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your website. On the other hand, if you could use a text browser such as Lynx, then you will get good result.

• For tracking individual user behavior, allow search bots to crawl your website. This doesn’t require session IDs or arguments that track their path through the site. But, since the access pattern is different, this may result in incomplete indexing of your website.

• Web publisher should always assume that a visitor doesn’t have any plug-ins installed. So, while publishing a content that requires a plug-in, clear links to the relevant download should be provided to the visitor.

• If you buy a content management system, make sure that the system creates pages and links that search engines can crawl.

• Monitor your site's performance and optimize load times. Fast sites increase user satisfaction and improve the overall quality of the web.

• Your web pages should be designed so as to load within 15 seconds over a 28.8k modem. Remember that if a page doesn't load in 8 seconds you could lose 1/3 of your visitors. For a page to download in ten seconds the 'page size' (i.e. the sum of the file sizes for all the elements that make up a page including the HTML file and all embedded objects (e.g. image files) should be no greater than 80Kb.The user should be presented with predicted download times and/or file size details when downloading a document, video clip or other multimedia element.

• Ensure that advertisements (Google ad sense) do not affect search engine rankings.

• Publishers should atleast use HTML 4.01 or above as the standard HTML version. This should be declared in the “Document Type Definition” at the head of HTML pages.

• A good website should be a unique and information-rich site. The website should be with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link. You should also write the web page content accurately and clearly.

• Carefully select the keywords that users would type to find your website. Don’t forget to include these keywords within your website.

• Creating a site map in your website with links that point to the important web pages will be a great idea. If there is large number of links, you may break the site map into multiple pages. So, better keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number.

• You have to use actual text instead of images to display content or links. Your visitors may be able to read the text on images, but the Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images. They will be able to learn about what your website is about only if you could give plenty of text. If you must use images, consider using the "ALT" attribute to include a few words of descriptive text.

• Try to have a text-based site menu. The main website menu may be made up of small graphical buttons that change colors when cursor is moved over it. Since you don’t use a poorly-written JavaScript or DHTMLcode, Google crawler will surely be able to follow these graphical links. But, it will be better if your website contains atleast one text-based site menu.

• Remember- a Flash-based home page is not user-friendly. It may draw the attention of a visitor for the first time. But, after that the visitor simply skips your web page like anyone else. As users are interested in grabbing information quickly from the web, more than 80 percent of people hate Flash intros.

• Another important point to be taken care of website design is not to use Frames to build your website. It makes your website difficult to link to. Quality links from other websites gives your website better search engine rankings. If you avoid the use of frames, more easily others can link to your website.

• Check for broken links if present as it may affect your website badly.

• If your website is dynamic, not every search engine spider crawls the web pages well.

Commenting on Blogs..

You may think whether commenting on other’s blog has to be taken under consideration. You will get the answer if you know why you are commenting. Normally people comment on other blogs inorder to get notified, or to promote the link or website they attach along with their comment. You can find a number of comments listed under a good blog. So, your comment has to stand out of others, right? Under this post, we will come across some points which I believe, will surely help you.

As a part of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), I’d been following normal or ‘traditional’ “Nice post” strategies while commenting on other blogs. This might be a cordial or formal style of commenting. But, there are chances of your comment getting un-noticed by others. Also you may find a large variety of this “Nice post” strategy.

But, if you want to post nice comments, the first thing you have to do is to read the blog. Thinking about wastage of time, I had commented on some blogs without even reading it. This is surely not a good practice. I can surely say without reading a blog, whether interesting or not, you can never comment on it sincerely. I can’t say as tips, but these are my suggestions for you on how to do good commenting on blogs. It may take some time, but you will surely get a good result.

Disagree if you cant agree!!

While you read comments on other blogs, you may notice some comments that disagree with the blog. We will automatically let us to read that comment. Why? Because these comments stand out of other normal comments I mentioned before. Disagreeing posts need not be without respect or rude. But remind, saying you disagree without pointing out the exact reason is worthless. So, you have to explain why you disagree with the author.

Add a little humor.

Don’t feel frightened to post comments with appropriate humor content. Surely it will make people to go through your comment at least twice. Since normal comments are serious, your comment will surely give a cool look. You don’t want to search comic books to make people ‘LOL’, just be frank.

First impression is the best impression
First impression is the best impression!! So, create a sharp and pointed opening line. This will surely draw people’s attention. If you are successful in building a witty and powerful opening line, surely one will read your comment without skipping.

Add your piece of information.

You have read many articles like “10 ways to get more Facebook likes”, right? Why cant you suggest a 11th way? People who read such a blog will surely read your comment as they are interested in increasing their Facebook likes. Obviously, they will find your suggestion hopefully useful.

Make the author to visit your website.
Impressing the author is another trick. Just make a feel to the author that you are familiar with their works. If possible, make a comment on the Portfolio, positive or negative. You are even getting a chance of the author visiting your website!!! Yea, its true.. If you like to provide any suggestions, visit our Portfolio.

Search your category.
Searching for highly relevant blog posts will be much beneficial. You may use the blog’s search function to find blog posts where you can expose your knowledge.

Use website name.
While filling the comment form, people normally put their website’s link in their name. I prefer you website name to your name. You may be little confused. But, try this. A catchy, keyword-focused name will surely encourage people to click on your link. Even the author himself may visit your website.

Make it fast.

Remember, no one wishes to read a novel. So, keep it short and simple!! Point out your points quickly.

Why can’t you comment on other comments??

Making meaningful conversation with other commentors will draw attention to your website. It will give a chance not only to increase your visibility, but also to show off your knowledge.

Yahoo buys Interclick for $270 million!!

Yahoo plans to buy Interclick, an online advertising company in the present competitive situation with Google and Facebook. Some experts say that the deal values about $270 million to help advertisers reach online users with more targeted messages.

Interclick is a New York based online advertising technology company founded in 2006.The acquisition is meant to help Yahoo to gain back its revenue which it is losing out on millions a year. Digital ad sellers are buying ad space on Yahoo and reselling it to other advertisers for a much higher price. Since Yahoo needs to improve its display advertising business, it is not a major acquisition for Yahoo according to some business analysts.

Interclick stockholders will get $9 a share, Yahoo said, a 22% premium to the stock’s Monday (31st October) close. The tender offer is expected to close by early 2012. Yahoo may use the purchase to revive sales of display advertising, such as banner ads, which stalled last quarter. The company is seeking a CEO after firing Carol Bartz, and has embarked on a strategy review as it grapples with competition from Google Inc. and Facebook Inc.

Interclick is expecting that with this tie up, Yahoo can sell its ad space for a higher price through an automated system. Some experts in this field say that Yahoo generates around $600 million a year from ad space alone. By this joining, Yahoo can earn more with ad space. Also it will be getting more executives to work with this ad space in order to maximize its value.

Kerry Rice, an analyst at San Francisco said “Interclick's behavioral targeting technology could help Yahoo to grow its display advertising revenue faster”. Also let’s hope that Yahoo could give Interclick more resources to expand into areas like mobile and video advertising.

Reduce your Spam score- Email Marketing

In the previous blog, we discussed certain points that add your spam score. I think it will be better if I could discuss with you how you can reduce your spam score. So in this article, we will discuss some tips, or you can say tricks to escape from spam filters. You can build up a good e-mail marketing strategy if you could give a little attention to your subject line.
• If your subject contains newsletter header (list), it will reduce your spam score (- 0.22)
• It is more beneficial if your subject contains newsletter header (news). (-0.62)
• Again, if your subject contains newsletter header (in review), it will reduce your spam score (- 1.00)
• If your subject contains a frequency-probable newsletter, it will reduce 0.73 from your spam score.
• If your subject contains a month name-probable newsletter, it will reduce 0.48 from your spam score.
• If your subject contains a date, 1.60 will be reduced from your spam score.

Some other words or phrases that help you out of these spam filters include a PGP signature, about a forgotten password or a registration system.
Another important part you may miss in your e-mail is your signature. You are getting much probability to escape from a spam filter if your mail contains an e-mail signature. Most spam messages don’t have that. Anyway I couldn’t find any points saying whether it will add your spam score if you don’t have a signature in your e-mails.

• Long signature present(no empty lines) ------- 3.13
• Long signature present(empty lines) ------- -0.30
• Contains what looks like an Email Disclaimer------- -0.70

Next point to be remembered is not to mention Spam Law Compliance. It is not wise to claim that you observe all the spam laws. You will be penalized from 0.91 to 3.47 points for this. Most spam messages’ size range is below 20K. So if your message is below 20K, it will be surely flagged as spam. So, SpamAssassin will credit you upto -0.71 if your message size ranges from 20-40K. If it is above 40K, you will reduce your spam score upto -0.12.
Some people may add e-mail addresses to your e-mail addresses to your list just to get you in trouble with the anti- spammers. I prefer scanning your e-mail database for an e-mail address starting with abuse@, postmaster@, or nospam@. Also you might scan for the word “subscribe” among your e-mail addresses. Another small percentage of recipients use systems that block all e-mails except those that respond to an e-mail message and sometimes give a name and reason for the e-mail. So, you have to monitor your “From” E-mail address for challenge systems.
E-mail client programs such as AOL 8.0 and Hotmail have changed their interface to allow users to sort their mail into preferred folders. As people subscribe, ask them specifically to place you in their address book (AOL), "safe list" (Hotmail), or "whitelist" (some spam filters) so that your e-mail will come directly into their inbox. You may find difficulty in asking people to do so. But, this increases the probability of your e-mails found in the inbox itself. Monitoring Blacklists and Test Accounts will also helps you a lot. SpamAssassin currently checks 3 blacklists:
• Razor2 (http://razor.sf.net)
• DCC List (www.rhyolite.com/anti-spam/dcc/dcc-tree/dcc.html)
• Pyzor (http://pyzor.sf.net)

Some other blacklists that may prevent your recipients from receiving their e-mail include:
• Mail Abuse Prevention System (MAPS, www.mail-abuse.org)
• Network Abuse Clearinghouse (www.abuse.net)
• NJABL.ORG (Not Just Another Blacklist, www.njabl.org)
• SPAM Blocking Blackhole List (http://blackholes.bruli.net)

Currently there are some services you can use to test the spam quotient of your e-mail offers before sending them out. Examples are Site Sell Spam Check Report and Assurance Systems. But currently spammers who used to spam as it is cheap will no longer spam because of the increasing risk. So, let me hope you will be able to build up a good e-mail marketing strategy. About 5% of e-mails are blocked by spam filters. Filters are very much sophisticated that it can be made to delete an e-mail with “bad words”. Actually while going through some articles with regard to e-mail marketing, I got some tips, which I’d love to share with you. You might have noted that many of your important mails to your clients/ target audience are drastically flagged as spam. Some filters look for patterns and add or delete points for certain points. If we learn to subtract points in a filter, we can build up a better e-mail marketing strategy.
You may find some points that are least important, but surely I can say this will provide some useful tips to you. Now, let me come to the points to be remembered while doing e-mail marketing.

Certain listservers have developed a bad reputation for sending spam. If the e-mail is being detected by these, it will add points to your spam score. If your e-mail address contains @ email-publisher.com or if you employ any free web hosting services commonly used by spammers, it will also add points to your spam score. So the first thing you have to take care is to avoid listservers used by spammers. The desktop e-mailing software used by spammers is penalized from 3.0 to 2.0.

Capital letters are found to be more spammy. Excess capital letters cost you .21. If you are using more upper case letters, you will be penalized for that. You may limit your capitalization to partial lines for avoiding this.
If your HTML message has more specific formatting with more than 50% HTML tags, you will have to pay again for that. So, better keep your HTML simple. If your mail contains stylized formats, it will reduce your score. According to my opinion, the following points will increase your spam score. But I can’t say that you should avoid these things:

• HTML table with thick border
• JavaScript contained in the message.
• HTML form in your e-mail.
• Links without an http:// prefix cost much.
• Don't link to URLs using IP address numbers instead of a domain.

High art will cost you highly. If you use special font colors that aren't in the palette of 217 web safe colors, it will cost 30 points. Hidden letters also cost you very much. The cost of different colors is as follows:

Black-- 0
Blue-- .21
Red-- .32
Grey-- .33
Green-- .41
Cyan-- .41
Yellow-- .42
Unknown color-- .42
Magenta-- .44

Black colors are safe, but since it is not that attractive, you can try to avoid it using it in font tags. Using a background color other than white will take your 0.317 points. Fonts larger than +2 or size 3 cost you 0.34 points. You may probably use HTML headers in the future rather than font tags to increase font size.

SpamAssassin also take immediate action against certain subject lines.

• GUARENTEED------- 0.62
• Starts with “Free” ------- 0.30
• Starts with "Hello" ----- 1.58

Creating a Facebook Ad

Many ecommerce experts have reported that Facebook Ads are generating a good positive return. But truly speaking, Facebook has not yet reached the same level with e-commerce. In this article by Web India Solutions, we will discuss some tips to improve the effectiveness of Facebook advertising.

Facebook Advertisements mainly come in two forms: Premium and Marketplace. Premium Ads are reserved for big corporate companies with a huge capital and good return. But, Marketplace Ads are comparatively low budget ads and they cost very little. Facebook makes it possible to advertise a Page, Event, Group or a website itself.

There are four main steps to creating a Facebook Ad campaign. As a first step, note down your advertising goals. This may include increasing likes on your Facebook page, getting more traffic on your website, creating an unbeatable online brand to your business and many more. You may have to create individual campaigns for each goal. Defining your target audience is the next step you have to do. Compared to any other advertising channels, Facebook has more demographic data available to you. Facebook also offers targeting based on interests and likes, location, demographics etc. Also you can easily point out people with all levels of education.

Creating Facebook ad is comparatively less complicated process. This consists of only some simple steps like designing the ad, determining the target audience, set pricing and submitting the ad for review by Facebook. Facebook allows upto 135 characters for the ad itself, whereas Google allows only 70 characters. Another feature of Facebook ad is thumbnail image can be used. But, we have to be very much aware of the fact that the Facebook platform doesn’t allow us to change the title. An alternative to this problem is that you can direct visitors to a website instead of fan page. But it may not convey the social aspects of an ad because of the ‘Like’ button that is automatically generated by Facebook.

Facebook allows you two options for payment: Pay for Impressions (CPM) and Pay for Clicks (CPC). You may select either of these two depending on the campaign you are running. If you are focusing on branding, then you may go with CPM which tends to be less expensive. Here you are paying for the number of impressions. You can select CPC model if you are running a campaign focused on some type of conversion. In CPC model, you need to pay only when someone clicks. Facebook suggests a bid range, which you can follow. You will never need to pay more than the maximum bid. Higher your bid, more likely your ad will get shown. Once you have designed your ad, targeted your audience and determined your campaign budget, you can place your order. Another option that Facebook provides is that you can review the ad before you place the order. If you couldn’t do so, you will have to set up a payment source, using a credit card, PayPal or a Facebook coupon.

Each Facebook ad is associated with a campaign. Firstly, you have to choose a campaign name, but this may be changed later on, if needed. While setting your budget, you can either choose a ‘per day’ rate or a ‘lifetime budget’. If you select the former one, Facebook will distribute your ad budget by day. On the other hand, if you are selecting the ‘lifetime budget’, the distribution will be throughout the duration of the campaign. Also you can schedule your campaign to run continuously or specify start and end dates.
