How to change logon screen background in Home and Pro

1. Click Start > click Run > type regedit > and click OK.

2. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

3. In the details pane (right-side), double-click the Wallpaper string value item.

4. In Value data , type the path and name of the picture or background, and then click OK .

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you specify the path correctly to the Background. And that it is a Bitmap!

You have now changed the logon Background.

This will take effect when you logoff.

Open Large Folders Faster

This tip will help increase the display speed in detailed view (mainly noticeable when used in folders with numerous files, such as a music download folder).

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder that you wish to increase the display speed. Then click View then Details

If you ever notice that when you click on your start button, that it takes Windows XP awhile to open the menu, you’ll want to follow this guide. Please note: typically when you notice a rather large slowdown, that it means that you are running low on system memory.

Change the Default 'Save As' Locations

Whenever you are in any given application and you click Save As…, you may have noticed that in the Save As Box, there are some handy locations that are listed on the left hand side. The Default Locations are: My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, and My Network Places. This guide will show you how to customize these locations to whatever location you want.
Decide on which locations that you want to use as shortcuts. The exact full address path will be needed. To ensure that you get the full address path, I suggest you navigate to your desired location by clicking start then going to My Computer, then clicking into the various folders until you are inside the desired location. Then copy what is displayed in the Address line and pasting into Notepad.

Below are a few examples of locations (remember you can choose what ever location you want)

Looking at the above 2 screenshots for the first one, the address line would be: C:\Program Files.

For the other screenshot, the address line would be: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Favorites

I copied these (and chose a few more locations) and pasted the address lines into notepad (the reason I pasted these into notepad was just to keep track of them, if you wanted to simply write these down instead, that would be fine…just be sure to write them EXACT, including blank spaces).

Repeat this for Places2, Places3, and Places4 (if these strings are already there then you don’t have to create them, just skip down to the next step).

Now, Double click on Place0 and enter in the Address Location that you saved earlier of the first location.

Then click Ok. Then double click on Place1 and enter the Address Location that you saved earlier of your second chosen location. Repeat this for Place2, Place3 and Place4.

Then Reboot your Computer.

Now whenever you are in an application and you click Save As… your new locations will be listed conveniently on the left hand side

How To Remove The Text From An Icon

Are you very good with figuring out what program corresponds to what icon? If so, you may be interested in this guide. This guide with show you how to remove the titles of the various icons. You may be thinking that it is very easy to remove the titles. Probably your first thought would be to rename the icon and make a blank name. Well, that doesn’t work, if you don’t believe me try it out for yourself and see….

Here is the result
Click Start, then My Computer. Click on Tools then Folder Options.

What happens when you try to rename the icon to a blank name? It simply reverts back to the previous name.

BEFORE:

For this trick to work, we need to make sure that File and Folder Settings has the Show File Extensions for known File Types Enabled. This is the default setting in XP, so if you have not made any changes it should be set properly. If you are not sure, then check. Here is how …

On the View tab check mark Hide Extensions For Known File Types then Click Apply

Ok, now that we have that set...Here is the trick to removing the icon title and having a Blank Text untitled icon

First, right click on the icon that you want to remove it’s title, then go to Rename

Now, what you need to do, is hold the ALT button down. With the ALT button held down, and using the keypad type 255 then release the ALT button and hit enter, and voila you now have a untitled icon.

This trick will work only for icon, if you are creating multiple Blank Text icons then you will need to name them like this:

For 1 Blank Text Icon: ALT + 255 (release ALT)
For 2 Blank Text Icons: ALT + 255 (release ALT) ALT + 255 (release ALT)
For 3 Blank Text Icons: ALT + 255 (release ALT) ALT + 255 (release ALT) ALT + 255 (release ALT)
And so on…

The reason we need to do this is because part of Windows XP rules state that you cannot have a file/folder/shortcut with the same name in the same folder. To get around this restriction, we simply name the first icon with 1 blank space, the second icon with 2 blank spaces, the third with 3 blank spaces and so on.

This trick (the Blank Text Icon Trick) combined with the Blank Icon Trick (this trick will be posted on FixMyXP soon) can be used to make a super hidden folder (it will have no icon and no text, so completely blank).

Make XP look like Windows Vista / Longhorn for free!

Changing the XP theme
First make sure that you have patched up your uxtheme.dll file. So go read my other recipe if you haven't so already. This recipe also tells you how to change your themes.

Now you are ready to do some downloading.

There are many msstyles themes out there that look super cool and look like vista/longhorn. You can also get shell packs and windows blinds themes but some people claim that this can mess up your computer badly.
The theme that I found works best is VistaXP by -kol! (but it was so popular that MS got it removed). Just go to the comments section to find themes you can download. These themes will make your computer look like Windows Vista for sure. So... go ahead and download it.
Then unzip or copy it to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes

All right now you can change your computers theme to the Vista theme you chose.

Changing the Wallpaper
There are lots of Vista wall papers available... chances are that you have one included with your theme as well. If you don't then you can try your luck at WinMatrix's great post for Vista wallpapers. If not then you can always search on Google for Vista Wallpapers.

If you want you can also get this wallpaper which also a CoolGrass wallpaper by ApacheUser plus it has the Windows Vista logo on it!

Changing the cursor
You can download the aero cursor pack over here. Just read the read me file supplied and enjoy. Additionally, you can go to How to change your mouse pointers article and change your mouse pointer to the 3D-White (system scheme), it looks very similar to the original cursor in Vista.

Getting Vista-ish applications
Now once you are done that. And you like some transparency on your computer get these two very cool tools.

Vista Explorer: Something like the original Vista explorer but for XP and plus it has..... transparency. YES! IT IS TRANSPARENT! Just like the original one.
Internet Explorer (transparent version!): This is also very similar to the real internet explorer. Plus the internet explorer button on the task bar says internet explorer 7 (good for fooling people)! You can also get the real IE 7 (no transparency though)

Now your system should look like Vista for sure, but why stop when you have come so far?

Get the Alt-Tab Replacement PowerToy! This shows you the windows you are switching to (sort of something like in the real windows vista)...

Fine tuning
After that, fine tune your font settings and turn on ClearType fonts with the ClearType Tuner PowerToy (you can also do this online). Since the real Vista uses the font 'Segoe UI' which is a cleartype font, you can mimic the real fonts by using ClearType.

However, some themes already come with the Segoe UI font so don't forget to enable it while you are using it.

Shell Packs
If you really want to get shell packs to do what you can already do on your own then here are some of them:
- Vista Customization pack by JoeJoe
- The brico pack by CrystalXP
- The Windows X longhorn Transformation pack by Windows X

Please keep in mind that the shell packs don't customize your computer to look like the latest Vista/Longhorn builds, so your computer might not look like the recent Vista screenshots.

The Vista Sidebar
Go to AlexTheBeast's tutorial on how to Install the Vista/Longhorn Sidebar into XP and put that on your computer too.

And when you are done that you can start celebrating! In fact you can claim that you have Windows Vista already, and nobody will doubt you. One last step enjoy and don't forget to show-off your new look!

Hack: How to access orkut or any other website when it’s blocked by a filter!

This is for all those pathetic souls out there who are sad and worried sitting in their office cubicle behind a firewall/filter, which has rendered your dear old orkut inaccessible :-)!

Well, just as something to do with my free time today as my brain was unable to solve a bug in my current code, I decided to break open the filter settings of orkut being inaccessible :-)!

Pre-requisites

Need to keep trying and trying hard @ breaking stuff
A lil bit know-how of using computers… Essentially the mantra of Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V
Ability to browse

That’s right - anybody with the basics of browsing can break open the filter for orkutting

Principle behind the breaking
This section can be skipped by the people who are not interested in learning why you can break open a filtered site! Essentially what your filter is checking for is the domain name to be blocked. IOW, the filter would search for ur HTTP header for the domain name to be say www.orkut.com and will block any headers from proceeding to the website :-)!

Now, how can we hack this?

The answer is much simpler than it seems actually. At least for my case, I just replaced the domain name by its corresponding IP address. For e.g. the time when I wanted to access orkut.com

I went to Convert Host Name to IP Address or Find IP address of a host - e.g. find IP address of host name of and found out the IP address of www.orkut.com

Replace the www.orkut.com occurrence in the URL on your web-address by the corresponding IP. Boom, everything starts working!!

Instructions specific to accessing orkut

With orkut you require a little bit more patience…

Step 1: Get the IP address of orkut.com from here, and let’s say it’s named X.X.X.X
Step 2: Type http://www.orkut.com/GLogin.aspx?done=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.orkut.com%2F and replace “www.orkut.com” with the IP address you have located. So, the address should be http://X.X.X.X/GLogin.aspx?done=http%3A%2F%2FX.X.X.X%2F

Step 3: This would lead you to another blocked page, wherein the site address on the top/or the URL that was blocked needs to be retrieved… Usually it’s of this type - http://www.orkut.com/RedirLogin.aspx?page=http://www.orkut.com/Home.aspx?xid=::weirdnumberhere::

A ray o hope?

Step 4: Replace www.orkut.com with the IP address and the ::weirdnumberhere:: with your unique XID [Everybody has a unique id], and click on enter.

You are through, pathetic soul :)!

Top Ten Steps For Computer Troubleshooting

June 2004 Your computer is never going to crash at 4:29 p.m. on a Friday before a long weekend when you couldn't care less if it stopped working. It will crash twenty minutes before a critical deadline when you are trying to get something done. Needless to say, this will be extremely frustrating.

While solving computer problems can often be complex, more often than not, some basic troubleshooting will help you quickly fix the more common problems, which are often the simplest ones. Here are the ten steps you should go through to systematically troubleshoot basic computer problems:

1. Take a deep breath and don't panic. Stand up and step back from your computer. You want to approach things in a systematic, calm, and controlled manner. Panicking likely won't help solve your problem, and it could make it much worse, including causing you to lose valuable data.

2. Save your current work. Before doing anything, make sure you save your current work so that you don't lose it. Save it on the hard drive or on a floppy disk. It doesn't matter where, just make sure you save it.

3. Backup your critical data. If it looks like your hard drive may crash or the computer may not start up again, take steps to backup your critical data while it is still working and before you turn it off. Hopefully you have a recent full backup and will only have to backup your most recent documents. Consider copying the data to a network drive or burning it onto a CD-ROM.

4. Reboot your computer. Turn your computer off, let it sit for two minutes, and reboot it. Sometimes one command of the hundreds a computer executes every second can cause corrupted memory or other temporary unexplainable problems. Rebooting will clear out all the gremlins and gives everything a fresh-start.

5. Is everything plugged in properly? Asking this a question may seem very basic, but you will be surprised how often it can often be the fix you are looking for. Cables get bumped or work themselves loose over time. Make sure they are all snug and tight. If you want to look under the hood, and are comfortable doing so, ideally you should check the cables and connections within your computer case as well. You should also make sure all cards and memory are firmly seated by gently but firmly pushing them into their respective slots.

6. Ask yourself what you did last. Did your problems start just after you installed new software programs or updated hardware drivers? This can be a great clue as to the source of a problem.

7. Is your hardware happy? Unhappy hardware is often the source of problems. To check your hardware, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tab, and then the Device Manager button. This will open the Device Manager dialog box. It lists all the hardware devices on your computer. Devices that aren't working properly will have a yellow exclamation mark next to them. Double-click on the problem devices to open a dialog box that may have details on the problem, and a listing of suggestions on how to fix it.

8. Check you computer for nasties. Run a complete system scan with your anti-virus software (make sure you update your virus definitions before you run the scan). You can do a free online scan at TrendMicro's Web site (http://www.trendmicro.com/). You should also scan your computer for adware, spyware, or other malware with a product like Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) or SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/). Scanning your machine with two of these products can be helpful as sometimes you will find something that one product missed.

9. Install software or driver updates. If it seems one program or hardware device is acting up, check the manufacturer's Web site for updates. The code in most software is thousands if not millions of lines long and it is impossible for software companies to find all the bugs in their programs. As users discover problems, software and hardware manufacturers often release revised software or updated drivers that include new code to address newly discovered problems.

10. Check online support. If you get as far as this step, your problem is probably more complex. Most hardware and software manufacturers now have extensive support information online in searchable databases. These are often called Knowledge Bases. Microsoft's support page is at http://support.microsoft.com/. Odds are someone else has already experienced the same problem you have, and you can often a solution online. Good luck with your troubleshooting.

Understanding Password Complexit

Understanding Password Complexity
A complex password that is enforced by the operating system is one of the most effective methods that you can use to deter the opportunity for a successful attack. When you configure both an expiration time and a minimum length for a password, you decrease the time in which a successful attack could occur. For example, when you enforce password complexity with a password length of 6 and set the password to expire in 60 days, a user can choose from a permutation of:

• 26 lowercase characters

• 26 uppercase characters

• 32 special characters

• 10 numbers

This means that:

• 26 + 26 + 32 + 10 = 94 possible characters in a password

• Password length policy = 6

• 94⁶ = 689,869,781,056 unique password permutations

With a 60-day password expiration time, the malicious user would have to make 133,076 password attempts every second to attempt all of the possible passwords during that password's limited lifetime. If it takes only 50 percent of the permutations to guess the password, a malicious user would have to attempt to log on to the computer about 66,538 (133,076 * .50) times every second to discover the password before it expires.

To decrease the chances that a malicious user has to discover the password, you can use a password length of 7. When you set the minimum password length to 7, the possible password permutations exceed 64 trillion (94⁷= 64,847,759,419,264). When you compare the calculations above that have a password length of 6 to the calculations below that have a password length of 7, you will notice that the malicious user would have to log on to the computer about 6,254,606 times for each second that the password is valid in the 60-day expiration time that you set.

The following list describes how increasing password length deters both dictionary and brute force attacks. Note that the examples that are in this list assume that you are have applied a policy that requires users to create complex passwords. When you do this, there are 94 possible characters from which the users can choose their password.

• 6 characters: 94⁶ = 689,869,781,056

• 7 characters: 94⁷ = 64,847,759,419,264

• 8 characters: 94⁸ = 6,095,689,385,410,816

• 9 characters: 94⁹ = 572,994,802,228,616,704

• 10 characters: 94¹⁰ = 53,861,511,409,489,970,176

How to create a strong, memorable password

A strong password is a password that is difficult for others to determine by guessing or by using automated programs.

Note: Some sites and services on the Internet/Network might require you to have a strong password to sign in.

To create a strong password that is easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to determine, try one of these techniques:

Merge two or more words, and combine the words with numbers and symbols. For example: Walk[My]Dog, Po#34tato, Champions=1995.
Abbreviate a phrase you'll remember. It could include numbers and symbols, or words that you can substitute with numbers or symbols. For example: I ride my bike 5 miles each Saturday could become the password Irmb5meS.
Use punctuation and numbers to combine the initials of people or objects from a familiar group, such as your favorite athletes, friends, movies, books, or historical figures. For example: Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and Joan of Arc could become the password 1G,2AL,3JA.
Drop all vowels from a favorite saying, and then add numbers or symbols. For example: Walk three dogs could become the password Wlk3Dgs.

To be strong, a password must:

Contain at least seven, but no more than 16, characters.
Combine three of the four different types of characters:
- Uppercase letters A thru Z (for example: A, B, C).
- Lowercase letters a thru z (for example: a, b, c).
- Numerals 0 thru 9 (for example: 1, 2, 3).
- Symbols (` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \ : " ; ' < > ? , . /).
Not be a common word or name, or a close variation.

Creating a password using the process above would give a hacker trying to crack your strong, complex password would have a 1 out of 64,847,759,419,264 chance in getting the correct password.

Some service providers require that a strong password also:

Not be the same as any of your four previous passwords.
Not be a minor variation of your old password. For example, if your old password was Champions=1995, a new password of Champions=1996 would not be acceptable.

Important

Don't use one of the above examples as your password.
Don't write down your password.
Never give out your password in an instant message conversation or share it with anyone else. It is policy for us to never prompt you for your password in an e-mail.
If you have more than one account, for instance, one for work and one for personal use, you should use a different password for each.
Your password should be changed every 45 days.

4.	Click the More Options tab, and then under Installed programs, click Clean up. The Add or Remove Programs dialog box is displayed.
5.	In the Currently installed programs list, click the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove (or Change/Remove).
6.	If you receive a prompt to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
7.	Repeat step 5 and 6 to remove other programs that you no longer use, and then click Close.
8.	Click OK, click Yes to proceed with this action, and then click OK.

Remove Restore Points

To remove all restore points except the most recent restore point, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2.	Right-click the disk in which you want to free up space, and then click Properties.
3.	Click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup.
4.	Click the More Options tab, and then under System Restore, click Clean up.
5.	Click Yes to remove all but the most recent restore point.
