WA friend lost his job recently at age 63. He had been a fundraiser for a major national charitable organization that has seen its donor base hammered by recession and now is cutting head count. My friend does not want to retire – but at the same time he understands that the odds are not great that he’ll find a new job at his age, and with his level of seniority and pay.

Instead, he’s thinking of going the entrepreneurial route – and he’s hardly alone. The ranks of older entrepreneurs have been growing quickly in recent years, and even more boomers will take the plunge in 2011.

But is it smart to start a business during a recession, when consumer demand and business-to-business spending is falling – especially as a midlife entrepreneur? My answer is yes – with several important qualifications.

Qualification No. 1: You need to identify a business where you’re confident demand will exist and you have the skills and passion to succeed.

Qualification No. 2: Many boomer start-ups are not entrepreneurial ventures in the traditional sense. These won’t be businesses that involve raising funds, hiring employees and renting office space. Instead, many will start out as bootstrapped self-employment operations, run on a shoestring from a home office.

Qualifications aside, there really is no perfect time to start a business. If you believe there will be long-term demand for your product or services, there’s no reason not to get started in a down market.

And midlife can be a perfect time to get going if you have the time and resources to devote to a business. If you’re an empty nester, your living expenses have stabilized and you can devote more hours to the business. If you’ve put away enough of money to live on for at least six months, you’re well positioned to get going, and reinvest what you make back into the business in the early years.

Sole proprietorships are by far the most common form of start-up. The good news about sole proprietorships is that you don’t need much start-up capital to get going. Many small enterprises can be started for a few thousand dollars, thanks to the Internet and inexpensive technologies that enable work from home. The key is keeping overhead low.

Here are some other plusses to consider when starting a business during a recession:

Expenses fall. The expense of running a business declines during a recession. Suppliers are cutting prices, and fees also fall for services.
Tough times weed out weak competition. If your business has staying power, you’ll find yourself running a more open field.
The first customer may be your old boss. Many bootstrap entrepreneurs start businesses in the fields where they formerly worked full time in order to leverage their experience and network of contacts.
Certain markets tend to be recession-proof. Consider anything related to health care or insurance, including services to doctors or medical equipment companies.

I told her that I noticed an ad on the internet that announced her success and was calling to check into the program she was advertised in. I shared with her the URL in which her ad appeared. She started laughing and jokingly said "I had no idea that I was so famous." Her emotions quickly changed to that of concern. In our discussion it occurred to her that she had looked at a couple of ads about work at home moms and that she had entered some of her basic information to get some details. From this basic information, this program created bogus ads that targeted local areas for misleading advertisement. The ad was impressive and seemed legitimate but it was nothing more that a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

So many are taken advantage of with this kind of less than honorable marketing practice.

Please don't think that all or even the majority of ads/programs exercise underhanded practices. In fact, there are many that offer honest and legitimate help. Being able to recognize the good from the bad can sometimes be challenging.

A few tips to help you recognize scams;

The offer is just too good to be true;

The amount of money you can earn is too enormous;

There are documents that require you to pay;

Your personal details and documents are asked, i.e. id, passport, bank account info, etc.

You are told you must act quickly;

You are asked to deposit payments via Western Union;

If you see claims (as seen on CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, FOX, etc), it's most likely a lie;

NEVER pay someone to work. If you are asked to pay money, chances are it's not a real job;

ALWAYS search for a detailed description of their business model. If not available prior to sign up, your email in-box may be inundated with "Opportunities to make you wealthy" that are just a waste of time.

Some things to check:

If there is no contact information, name, or number, it's more than likely a scam. Check out Alexa dot com website; see if they have any information on the domain name. If the website is legitimate there will be contact info along with how long the site has been on the web

Watch for excessive testimonials. Actually read the testimonials, and assess how realistic they sound.

Do a Google search for the program. Look for real reviews. Be careful of the reviews, many can be bogus created by the program owner(s).

Is there an affiliate agreement?

What are the conditions of the agreement?

May I terminate the agreement? If so, How?

Is there a fee to join the program?

What is the commission rate?

What is the cookie duration?

Does the program pay lifetime commissions?

And many more . . . .

So how do you decide on what company within an industry to hitch your wagon to? Well, I think for many of us, the summer of 2010 will be . . . . memorable. I think the best word I can use to describe it for me is extreme. Extreme heat combined with the extreme economic climate of today's world. With that said, I believe we all have had an amazing summer ~ probably one of the best ever. It's all about choices and each of us is in control of our choices.

With so many things beyond our control, I decided to take control by using the summer as an opportunity to getting better and over the physical effects from the car accident I was in last October. It seems to have taken it's toll. In addition, I am having to overcome the sudden awareness of a heart condition. Wow, I say is there an end in site. Well, to make a long story short, I decided that it made good sense to be closer to my son. We are planning for me to make a move to Charlotte, NC. That will be great to be closer to him.

Talking about an amazing summer ~ my son rented a place at the beach and we all stayed there for one full week. It was incredible. Everyone out there. . . . . yes, you . . . listen to me. Take the time to be with your loved ones. There are no words that could describe the joy it will give to you mentally and emotionally. Despite the growing up pains of young ones, my grandchildren brought and blessed me with indescribably joy and memories.

My partner, Roger also spent a week at the beach. He does every year with his family and now I can fully understand "why." It's a bonding and phenomenal memory creator that will last for many years to come.

Our approach to life and how we live is a choice that each of us makes. Independence Day is considered a federal holiday, which usually means that all non-essential federal institutions (like the U.S. Postal Service, court systems, etc.) are closed on the Independence Day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation's heritage, society and people. Speeches and editorials may invoke Revolutionary war themes such as Founding Fathers of the United States (such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington and others), the Constitution, the Liberty Bell, and democratic principles such as liberty, freedom, equality under the law, inalienable rights, and representative government.

Families often mark the Fourth of July with a picnic or barbecue, and often gather with family relatives, taking advantage of the three day weekend or day off from work. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) generally are colored in red, white, and blue due to the colors of the American flag. Parades are often held Independence Day morning, baseball games are usually held (July 4th being nearly halfway into the baseball season), and the evening is usually marked by displays of fireworks at public parks. Some other Independence Day traditions concurrent with these events include face painting for the children and tossing of a football or frisbee.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by a pops orchestra playing patriotic songs such as "The Star Spangled Banner", "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", and the "1812 Overture".

"The Star Spangled Banner", also the USA's national anthem, commemorates the United States flag that was visible by the light of "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air." This view of the flag throughout the night of bomb bursts was inspiring to the captive Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 and it provided hope concerning the ability of the United States to competently defend Fort McHenry.

Most fireworks shows in the United States end in a grand finale, where an intense volley of fireworks is rapidly launched almost simultaneously. Major displays are held in New York and Boston harbors and on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and on and on.

Whatever you do on this day of freedom, remember how wonderful it is to have our freedom. Enjoy the day for it is a gift given to us by all who have fallen and sacrificed. So it is in their honor, celebrate our freedom and yes, God Bless America!

As the week draws to a close and everyone is gearing up to the celebration of a long holiday week-end and celebrate Memorial Day. I read the following article by Justin Cox and would like to share it with each and everyone of you.

On the warm, green plain of the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Congressman John Carter closed his Memorial Day speech by saying that military families carry just as much importance as the military itself.

It was a gesture to those left behind that the leaders of Central Texas gave Monday – a gesture to some of the smallest ceremonial participants.

Accompanying Carter were Sen. John Cornyn and Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch.

In front of several hundred spectators, one of the biggest crowds ever seen at the site, Lynch said he had received many "Happy Memorial Day" wishes over the weekend; but he said it's not a day to be happy, it is a day to reflect.

"I don't think God cares about whether you're a U.S. senator, or a congressman or a lieutenant general. I think he cares about how you care for people," Lynch said. "Just know that every day, we think of you, and we think of your sacrifice. It's important to reflect on the fact that we'll never forget? Freedom has never been free."

It was children these men cared for on this day, caring for the people they will become in a world made that much harder to grow up in now that a parent is gone from their lives forever.

One by one as the name of their parent was called, the children stepped forward. And most were young.

"Every Memorial Day, we honor those who make the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom," Cornyn said. "Today, we are going to honor the children of those fallen warriors through a gold medal of remembrance. It tells these children that their mom and dad were heroes; hopefully it will help soothe some of their loss. It gives them a legacy to live up to, and maybe help soothe some of the loss of a parent who served their country.

"Hopefully it tells them that they are heroes, and it gives them something to live up to in their own lives." The medals went to boys and girls alike, all who had lost a parent in this latest conflict overseas.

One child, no taller than his mother's waist, ran up to receive the medal presented by Sen. Cornyn. The tall, white-haired senator placed it around the little boy's neck; the boy smiled, and clasped his arms around the leg of his mother, proudly standing astride.

Farther down the line, two sisters, no older than 12, stood with their mother in a strong, but sad procession.

The procession moved on during the close of the ceremony to witness the unveiling of a black granite slate with the names of each of the fallen soldiers of 2008, placed alongside all the others marking the years since the war began in 2003.

The Passing of a Legend

With great sadness we share that Robert Reed, commonly called "Unc" was our very dear uncle, WERBIZ member and friend, left us February 13, 2010 for a better place.

For those of you who participate in our weekly conference calls, his all familiar voice will now be silent. We doubt that there ever was a call when he was silent. Unc had a determination about him. He was a testament to his message . . . . he never gave up and never gave in.

Someone once said "when you are born you enter the world crying while everyone else is rejoicing and when you die hopefully you have lived such a life that everyone will be crying while you are rejoicing". Unc lived such a life.

For those of us who were blessed to know him on a personal level were amazed by how this modest and unassuming man could communicate such an extraordinarily powerful message in simple and straightforward terms. We will treasure our personal memories of Unc and know that we will forever benefit from the wisdom of this remarkable man.

We know Unc, is looking down on us at this very moment with a smile saying I did it, I gave it may all, I went for it, now it's your turn. Go for it. Make your life a life worth living well.

There will be no call this week in honor of "Unc."

Hard to believe that we have just brought another year to closure, another chapter in our lives. 2009 certainly has presented challenges to each and everyone of us. Challenges so very different to each other but yet challenges to you. With this in mind I thought . . . . .

What if you were to ask yourself “What’s the best thing I did in 2009?” And then tell your story to the world. Perhaps you finally lost that 50 lbs of excess weight and you feel great and your health is better. Or maybe you finally had the determination and will power to start that long desired home base business. Besides your best thing for yourself you also did a best thing for others. Maybe you brought joy to others and worked several hours in a local soup kitchen. There are so many answers to this question and each and all different and unique to each and everyone of us. The important thing is to be honest with ourselves in answering "what's the best thing I did in 2009?"

Now that we've answered that how about telling yourself and the world what you want for 2010! Did you know that when you write down a goal or an intention you are 95% more likely to get it! Is there really an education needed to be an entrepreneur? This is a question often asked by aspiring entrepreneurs.

Well, it all depends on the individual. There are times even when those that have no educational business background are still able to make it big in the business world.
