These days are among those where a lot of spams are being sent specially from yahoo accounts.
Unusual to the previous cases where they wanted to send out the money from the bank of Nigeria or else, this time they are just dropping a line and putting links.
In my experience, a lot of spams are now able to make to my inbox because it is coming from legit yahoo accounts.
The spam filter can not filter those because these are the Email addresses where I did sent Emails to or received from. Moreover, we do tend to send links only in the Emails. That must be making it difficult to filter the spams.
At one point I realized that my yahoo account was also compromised when I checked my "sent" folder. There were two in drafts. Not Good!!
I think it is time to change the password.
At the moment I have only one suggestions: Do not click on the links that you are not familiar with.

How to detect them? that is whole another level of complicated question.

#Captivate to get Gingerbread 2.3

Samsung Captivate is getting the updates for android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Back in the days, when I was inside the walls, I was excited when I was able to go from 2.1 to 2.2. A lot of wind has blown since then. I rooted my galaxy S.
I am not going back after having installed the Cyanogenmod 7 into my android?
Thanks, but no thanks!
I heard that it would not be able to handle 2.4. However, CM7 is not bad at all! No bloatwares, better battery life, more control... almost makes me regret why I could not root it sooner!

Copy path information in Lion 10.7

At times, I wished for a shortcut to copy the path information of the files. I had tried Tree, but it was not that much informative.

Finally I found a helpful link in macworld. There were twenty different ways of doing things. This one worked nice for me.

Open Automator, select the Workflow.

Select Files & Folders, and drag "Get Selected Finder Items to the workflow"

Select Utilities, then drag "Run Shell Script to the workflow". Then change Passinput (on the right) to "as arguments".

Make the following changes:

    echo "$f" 
done

for f in "$@"

do
    echo "$f" | pbcopy

done

Save it as Application in a safe place.

Go to the saved location, select the application that you just saved. Press command+T to add it to the sidebar. Any time you want to copy the path of a selected item in finder just click the application on the sidebar. This will simply copy the path information, you can paste.

Of course, you could simply drag the items into the terminal and copy from there. But this one is much better!

The Map link does not work. My suggestion is on how to make it functional.

A story of two post men that my father had told me while I was small:

Two post men come from the east and west side of Nepal every morning. They meet at mid-day and exchange their parcel/packages and then return. Who will bear more pain?
Hint: See the picture.
Going west on sun set: too much photons hitting your eyes. And, vice versa for the east.

Re-Flashing Samsung Captivate with Cyanogenmod

How to Manage & Search in Firefox with key

In opera, you could do "g search term" in the address bar and it would "google" that for you*.

Recently I found that you could do the same for firefox (hello! chrome users! :P).

The motivation was to have GoogleScholar (GS) as one of the search engine. So, I installed the GS search addon by BarryRidge [Link to the addon].

Now back to how to manage search engine with keywords:

In order to assign the keywords: open the "manage search engines" from the search button.

The list of search engines come up. Click on the Edit Keyboard.

Keywords assigned.

Assign the keyword of your choice. For example: b for bing, g for google... etc

b for Bing, g for google! in Firefox search bar.

Assigning keywords is fun as it allows you to search from the address bar (ctrl+L). This is so chrome, but OK. For example by doing the things mentioned, "g search item" googles search item.

Samsung Captivate: cyanogenmod installed

Problem:
Galaxy S (I) started shutting down randomly [I rambled about it here]. The worst part was that it was out of the 1 year warranty period [link]. I Updated it from 2.1 to 2.2. Did not solve the issue.

Solution:
Well, I first rooted it [link]. However, I did not install backup.
Well, after little bit of nailbiting excercise, I was able to install cyanogenmod 7.1 into Captivate.

Microsoft is trying to combine the social with search.

Circles into your Gmail

Google has inserted circles into your mailbox@Gmail.

This is nice as it bridges the gap between the social circle and the Email. It seems to filter out the communication with the people from circle.
With this attempt, Google has clearly shown its intention to link social life with Email. I should say this is the second attempt of Google to insert Gmail into social circles. Facebook already integrated message system into the social networking, making message as one of the activity. The only thing is that Gmail was accepted as an Email service, whereas facebook started as something else.

What amazes me is how people are confortable with the ole' style communication of sending one-to-one Email. Although Facebook has changed it a bit, Sending Email is regarded as one of the formal ways.

Here is a hacked list of how people have been communicating over time:

Birds, Telephones, Radio, Letters
Letters, Emails, Text/SMS, Messages

There are communications which need to happen over the circle, versus one-to-one. Both are important. What we share in circle is different than what we communicate in personal Emails.

Updating Samsung Galaxy S to Froyo

It is shame that my samsung galaxyS has been turning off a lot these days. I had chosen samsung's product instead of iPhone. I might regret that decision.
:(

I have also tried contacting the customer service via email. They suggested simple reset (factory reset //or// battery out reset). It seems that there are problems with the galaxy phones constructed before certain dates [(This post explains some bit of my problem: link)].

I have now updated the Firmware from 2.1 to 2.2 Froyo. Lets see if that resolves the problem.

CMF Ads closing down!

Too bad!
CMF ads was established by a bunch of enthusiastic guys: BenandTurnip. After running dry with the ads, they had tried different mechanisms: fireworks ad, spike, atomic ads etc. None proved to be their nuclear option to save it.

Although I was one of the "once in the blue moon" guy there, I liked the sense of community in the forum. I also appreciated the efforts of individual help that Ben had provided to the members.

In the words of word grrls "it was good! Well run, honourable, reliable, it offered more than just a place to buy and sell ad space, CMF Ads was a micro community."

I am sure that the creative minds of CMF will come up with better ways to help blogging people.

Firefox plugin for Devanagarik Nepali Script

There are few options for typing in Nepali Unicode (for mac) that I am aware of
1. First one: Use Google's compose mode with transliteration. Most of the time, it is easy to use.

2. Then there is Firefox extension:

It also comes with the keyboard layout.

Few experiments for ease of use:

I had to press the following in the keyboard with the firefox add on (had to look into the layout) :

Q/yak/kE p/rsMsa

When typed with transliteration on in Gmail:

ठ्याक्कै प्रसंसा
could be written by just typing:
Thyaakkai prasansaa

Semi-Conclusion:

Using the firefox addon is not so convenient... :(
tai pani aafnai ghar ko tihun mitho bhane jhai, I will give it a shot. I will try it.

I thought: well he is a star, so no wonder if people/ladies go crazy (on teez :P )!

Today, I saw similar message on my wall.
Half dozen other friends also saw the similar post and they all "liked" them.
Having seen similar wall post before, it clicked to me:
It is a spammy app for sure!

The trick here is to show the picture of the person looking into the app. This makes the post virtually likeable by anyone who is viewing it. No wonder other people liked it because they were thinking that the first person wished him/her.

Need to spam friend?
There is an app for that...

Google+'s theme overhaul in Google system

Note how the google system has gone from nice sky-blue to "khaki-black" theme after arrival of plus.

I just can not keep myself comparing the red-blue versus black spider-man.

Watch how the black suit gives dark power to spidy.

It's probably me, let hope that there is no evil in going from blue to black (unlike in spiderman movie where spider man becomes evil-istic after going black).

A Laborious Spammer: Gotcha!

Well, I have an interesting finding to share about manual spammers.
I am sure that you all are being bombarded with manual spam comments in your blog-posts. Some of these are detected by Google-blogspot-spam blockers. Some are not.
I found that there were few comments waiting for moderation.
They read something like these:

The comments look almost as if they were real comments. They are off topic in this case. However, there are instances where they stay on topic and insert links on the last sentence.

I looked into how they got in here...

The search trick for spammer is to type...

site:blogspot.com inurl: <keyword>

Note how they are targeting the comments section by having them in the search item

And they are from... New Dehli, India!

I am thinking that the spammer websites have outsourced the spammers too!!!
