Are you utilizing search and social media together? According to Lee Odden, CEO of TopRank Online Marketing, many people keep their search and social campaigns separate. However, if they combine their efforts, they would be more capable of reaching their goals and even expanding them.

Are you utilizing search and social media together? According to Lee Odden, CEO of TopRank Online Marketing, many people keep their search and social campaigns separate. However, if they combine their efforts, they would be more capable of reaching their goals and even expanding them.

Typically, people use social media for branding and customer engagement. With search, people want to increase sales and leads by being more visible. But a joint effort produces better results. Take, for example, the Wal-Mart Check Out blog. It has 16,000 inbound links and is great for engagement, but it has a severe lack of SEO. The site ranks for phrases such as “checkout” but not for any of its content.

On the flip side, IKEA is actively involved with social media, but the company applies SEO to it as well. Odden says that people and companies that optimize their social content drive traffic, build relationships, and reach customers all at the same time.

In addition, many people falsely look at social media as a direct marketing tactic, although it is not at all. Odden said:

“Measuring ROI as a direct result of social media is not the right question because social media is a platform, it’s not a tactic.”

He went on to say that making that comparison is similar to asking where the ROI is in email. The use of a platform determines the results, not the platform itself. If your goal is to increase your revenue, you must look at ROI. If not, you can find value in social media through relationships, branding, and visibility.

Near the end of September, Yahoo began a new branding campaign in an effort to re-shape the Internet giant’s image. WebProNews caught up with David Roth, the Director of Search Marketing at Yahoo, to talk about the re-brand and specifically, the paid search element of it.

Roth said the purpose of the new campaign was to re-engage users with Yahoo. The campaign put a new face on Yahoo and gave it a new slogan: “It’s You!” The tagline’s intention is to put a focus on users and show that Yahoo has something for everyone.

Since Yahoo is trying to re-engage its users, Roth saw the need to incorporate paid search techniques. Although people talk constantly about true value lying in branding and awareness, any time a person pays for something, he wants to know what he gets in return. As a result, Roth and his team had to essentially apply revenue by creating metrics for measuring the engagement.

They did this by placing pixels all over the site for things such as pageviews, calls to action, and even hard conversion points like making Yahoo a homepage and downloading the toolbar. In addition, they conducted ad-hoc analysis to look at all the Yahoo data.

Although it has been a challenging process for Yahoo, Roth said it has been a good experience.

Former Googler Vanessa Fox has written a book entitled Marketing in the Age of Google. The current founder of Nine By Blue spoke with WebProNews about how her book emphasizes the importance of search.

Former Googler Vanessa Fox has written a book entitled Marketing in the Age of Google. The current founder of Nine By Blue spoke with WebProNews about how her book emphasizes the importance of search.

Since there are numerous paid search books, Fox wanted her book to primarily cover organic search. Although it is not a technical SEO book, it does contain high-level strategies for incorporating search into the overall business process. It includes valuable search data consisting of searcher behavior, market research, and information for building a searcher persona.

The book also looks at the integration between search and social media. Several years ago, businesses realized that they needed to have a website. Fox said they are now having similar realizations regarding their need to get involved with social. Unfortunately, search was skipped along the way. In her book, Fox gives helpful tactics for how search and social can both be easily integrated into business strategies.

Speaking about the book, Fox said: “I’m hoping that it just helps companies understand why it’s important to engage with search marketers.”

Although the book has not yet been released, you can pre-order it through Amazon.

Well-known author Mark Joyner has two new books that offer very practical advice for businesses. Joyner, who is also the founder of ConstructZero, talked with WebProNews at BlogWorld and highlighted each of his new books.

The first is called Integration Marketing: How Small Businesses Become Big Businesses – and Big Businesses Become Empires. Joyner said he researched businesses throughout history and found that they all utilized forms of marketing that were both low cost and high return. In his book, he tells businesses how to find those areas of opportunity that will allow their business to take off.

Secondly, Joyner co-authored The Worst-Case Scenario Business Survival Guide with David Borgenicht. This book is a serious spin-off from the humorous book Borgenicht also co-authored entitled, The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook. Joyner and Borgenicht’s book offers advice for how businesses can approach unfortunate issues such as the recession, layoffs, loss of funding, and numerous other potential disasters.

Since the online marketing space is still relatively new for so many businesses, SitePoint approached Brandon Eley and Shayne Tilley about writing a book on the subject. The book called Online Marketing Inside Out provides an introduction to Internet marketing and explains why it is important for businesses to embrace.

WebProNews caught up with Brandon Eley who discussed specific elements of the book. Each chapter covers an area of online marketing such as search engine optimization, pay per click marketing, email marketing, social media, and more. In the end, the book ties all the areas together and offers advice for creating an online campaign and tracking the results.

Many businesses have a website but do not know how to make it visible to their audience. Eley said this is one of the biggest challenges businesses face. The book provides answers to this challenge and also gives tips that encourage customers to act.

If you would like to learn more about Online Marketing Inside Out, you can purchase it at any major bookstore or on Amazon.

According to Darrin Clement, the CEO and Founder of Maponics, local search is, in fact, being redefined by the Web and mobile. The good news for users is that it is giving them more control to dictate what they want from local.

As Clement explains to WebProNews, local search is not just about latitude and longitude. The context of the search also needs to be included into the equation. Some people may be searching from their mobile devices and want real-time results, while others may be performing local searches for the next day.

Looking ahead in local search, Clement sees social networks and local search working together and being tied around geography. He said there would be rich development in the real-time aspect of social networks when combined with local search technology.

Many small businesses have thought about turning their business into a franchise. Joel Libava, also known as The Franchise King, spoke with WebProNews and offered some tips for businesses to consider before they take the plunge.

First of all, he advises businesses to be extremely careful. There are many franchise development firms that will try to take you for your money. Secondly, he suggests having at least 1 or 2 locations already in operation. In addition, he recommends having an operation’s manual formulated in order to have a structured plan.

According to Libava, the franchising industry is also beginning to adopt social media. Because everyone is tired of pushy advertising, he said smart franchisors are utilizing article marketing and social media in order to attract people.

Libava also points out that franchising is not for everyone. Be sure to consider all the options before taking the plunge with your business.

When it comes to SEO, Stephan Spencer is one of the best experts in the industry. But when it comes to content monetization, his eighteen-year-old daughter Chloe is also considered an authority. While other teenagers were busy babysitting and working in food service, Chloe was beginning a successful career online.

After her dad explained to her how Google AdSense worked, she decided to create a fan site for the ever-popular Neopets. Chloe did everything right. She picked an area of interest and then utilized various offerings from the search engines. Her site took off and she began making money.

In the area of advice, Chloe suggests having relevant ads that blend into the content. She also recommends putting ads above the fold (before you have to scroll) in order to be visible.

Has someone ever posted a picture of you online that you wish wasn’t there? Since nearly everyone has a smartphone, it is so easy to post a photo to Facebook or Flickr instantaneously. But how could that image affect you in 5 years?

Some cases are harmless, but there are other situations that could have a lasting impact on individuals. WebProNews spoke with Wayne Sutton of OurHashtag who gave some tips for preventing social media from coming back to haunt you.

Social media etiquette is still a gray area online. Some people act differently online than they do offline and vice versa. Sutton said that he personally tries to be the same person online that he is offline.

He went on to say that individuals should establish a presence online that adequately represents them offline as well. It is also important to remember that even a simple tweet could hurt yourself, your brand, and potentially, others.

Sutton offers this simple, but wise advice: “Think about what you’re posting before you post it.”

It has been an exciting year for Google AdWords with the release of its new interface and several new tools, but it looks to get even more interesting over the next year. Frederick Vallaeys, the Senior Product Specialist for AdWords, talked with WebProNews and explained how the online advertising arena is and will continue to evolve.

Ads have traditionally consisted of three lines of text, but Vallaeys indicated that they would soon be changing. Google advertising has to keep up with the company’s organic side and integrate platforms such as universal search, images, video, and more, into ads.

He said, “We really can’t have the advertising product lag behind and not be as visually appealing, if you will, and as a result, maybe have advertisers not get as many clicks as they could’ve.”

Vallaeys also predicted changes to come in regards to advertising for mobile devices. In the past, the ad text had to be shorter for mobile devices, but as mobile technology has developed and advanced, the text can now simply be enabled to fit. In addition, ads can be specifically targeted and relevant for mobile needs.

In an announcement last week, Google revealed that it acquired mobile ad firm, AdMob. With both Google and AdMob working together, Vallaeys said users could expect interesting and useful results moving forward.
