How To Design Enticing Registration Pages

It’s difficult to persuade new visitors to sign up for a website. Most of the time they just found the site and have no idea what it does. With exciting copy and some relatable graphics you can often get people interested. But how do you craft a registration page that attracts visitors and pushes them toward the submit button?

In this post I’d like to examine a number of registration pages which utilize superb methods of interface design. It’s possible to create a well-designed website but ignore the facets of great interfaces and user experiences.

Creative Form Inputs

I suggest trying to break away from the default browser styles by creating your own input fields. You should obviously still use the HTML tags but modern CSS properties offer web designers a spoonful of expanded creative boundaries. And man, those are tasty!

Similarly the signup page for Oozled uses large oversized letters and input fields which blend cooperatively.

Guiding Tips

For more detailed webpages you might consider offering brief tips during signup. These could be placed in the form of tooltips, floating text, or input labels. The goal is to clarify a specific purpose for each field and get visitors onto a streamlined path towards completion.

Quick & Simple UX

When discussing the user experience of signup pages one word comes to mind: simplicity. The end goal should be to finish registration in the simplest manner possible. Avoid extraneous fields that aren’t necessary on signup. Keep a focus on the form itself and write error messages that encourage rather than dissuade.

Perhaps one of the simplest examples can be found on Udemy. The signup page starts with an e-mail address and once filled out moves on to request a name & password.

Take for example the signup modal window on Gumroad which offers two distinct methods of registration.

Dynamic Content

While animated pages are not always going to increase registration numbers, they will often feel more developed than static pages. The effect is more psychological than technical but I find myself impressed with forms that use animations for CSS3 effects or switching between input fields.

Take for instance the login & signup page for Lanyard. Once it first loads there are two large text links that users can click between. Both login and signup forms are located on the same page and switch between views like an accordion menu.

Another similar example can be found on Mapbox which relies on the modal window approach. After clicking the “sign up” link a modal window appears over the screen with typical input fields. You’ll also notice a small “sign in” link in the bottom-left corner of the modal which animates a swipe event to show the login form. Both forms are displayed in the same manner and easily accessible from the same page.

How to Improve Website's Conversion Rates? Dna Analysis 6 Design Tips An appealing website design is important, but you can’t lose sight of what your website is really for: to convert traffic into lead-form submissions, phone calls, physical-location visits, contact-form submissions and sales. Without these actions, your business will not generate revenue. Naturally, the more conversions your website produces, the more revenue your business is going to produce.

I recently sat down for a morning cup of coffee with a friend that wanted me to audit his company’s website. Its conversion numbers were extremely low and my friend was willing to make any necessary changes to improve those numbers. Here are six takeaways from our conversation that you can implement to improve your conversion rates.

1. Opt for a responsive design.

Approximately 31 percent of all traffic to the top 10 digital properties came from mobile devices, according to ComScore’s 2015 US Digital Future in Focus study. This number, while already significant, will keep increasing. If your website doesn’t provide a pleasant mobile experience you are shooting yourself in the foot.

A responsive website design (RWD) adapts to fit any screen -- desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets -- in a way that makes all pages, features and actions accessible, regardless of which devices the user is browsing on. Are you going to sit there and try to manipulate your mobile screen to read the content or access an offer? Of course not, and neither will your customers.

2. Chose a simple design over complex noise.

Years ago web-design trends were over the top -- lots of animation and flash were all the rage. Today, clean and simple flat designs are popular. Brands used to go overboard trying to impress visitors with quirky features, while today's consumers appreciate a nice, clean layout.
Impress your visitors with your content and offerings. Bombarding them with unnecessary flash and animation not only annoys them, but it also slows down the load time of your website. Whatever you do, don’t mirror your site after this masterpiece.

3. Say no to stock photos.

First, let me say that stock photos are great for some things, such as your blog posts. In a previous column I listed several sources of free high-quality stock images. However, they don’t belong on your company’s "About" page.
I cringe when I see a website that uses painfully phony stock images on pages that describe what the business does or the individuals behind it. If you want to include images of your team, hire a professional photographer and book studio time.
Consumers aren’t going to have much confidence in a business that is trying to convey their expertise and professionalism using stock photos.

4. Keep your navigation simple.

When consumers land on your website they need to be able to find what they are looking for within two seconds. If they have to search any longer than that they are going to become frustrated and find another website.
Keep your navigation menu as simple as possible. Too many options will overwhelm your visitors. You need to have a clear path to whatever action it is you want your visitors to complete, whether it’s a submission form or a specific destination page.
My company is in the middle of a website-redesign rollout, and we really simplified our navigation, condensing 15 services pages down to a single page. The end result is a much easier path to our conversion goal -- a consultation-request form.

5. Don’t make it difficult for a potential customer to contact you.

While a phone number is always a great idea, many consumers would rather contact a business through its website, especially if they are inquiring about a service. They don’t want to be pitched and sold to -- they just want information. Make it as easy as possible for potential customers to contact you.
The previous design of my company’s contact page had two options: a quote-request form that had 12 fields and a general contact form that had three fields. We now have a simple three-field consultation-request form. The consumer doesn’t have to decide between two forms any longer. There is just one simple form -- we can gather all of the information needed when the initial contact is made.

6. Remove your social-media feeds.

When social media was new and fresh, everyone put their social feeds on their websites. Now, consumers know how to connect with your brand on social media if they want to. Placing Facebook and Twitter feeds on your website just draws attention away from your conversion goals.
Place social icons in your footer or sidebar and link to your accounts -- if a visitor feels inclined to follow or connect they will. You want them to read your website content, complete your forms and make purchases, not scroll through your previous tweets and posts.

It also adds language-level support for object graph management and object literals while providing dynamic typing and binding, deferring many responsibilities until runtime.

Elixir

Elixir is a dynamic, functional language designed for building scalable and maintainable applications.Elixir leverages the Erlang VM, known for running low-latency, distributed and fault-tolerant systems, while also being successfully used in web development and the embedded software domain.

Framework:

In computer systems, a framework is often a layered structure indicating what kind of programs can or should be built and how they would interrelate. Some computer system frameworks also include actual programs, specify programming interfaces, or offer programming tools for using the frameworks.

Node.js

Node.js® is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient. Node.js' package ecosystem, npm, is the largest ecosystem of open source libraries in the world.

Django

How to Center Anything with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

CSS is a stylesheet language that describes the presentation of an HTML (or XML) document.

CSS describes how elements must be rendered on screen, on paper, or in other media is a great way to center images, blocks of text, and even your entire layout. Most of these properties have been in CSS since version 1, and they work great with CSS3. Centering is an alignment that can be very useful for web designers. And CSS is the best way to center everything.

Here are four ways to center things using CSS:

centering text
centering a block
centering an image
vertically centering a block or image

1. Centering Text with CSS

The most common and (therefore) easiest type of centering is that of lines of text in a paragraph or in a heading. CSS has the property 'text-align' for that:

p.center { text-align: center; }

Every paragraph written with the “center” class will be centered horizontally inside the parent element, or the width of the paragraph if that is set. Here’s the associated HTML:

<p class="center">This text is centered.</p>

Here i mention some Some point to remember when centering text with the text-align property:

Text that is centered with the text-align property will be centered within the container element.
This is an alignment of the text, like left alignment, right alignment, and justified alignment. It doesn’t move the entire block of text to the center.

2. Centering Blocks of Content with CSS

Blocks are any element on your page that has a defined width. This includes layout blocks. The proper way to center blocks with CSS is to set both the left and right margins to auto. Here is the CSS:

div.center {
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
width: 8em;
}

And this is the HTML that applies to:

<div class="center">This entire block is centered, but the text inside it is left aligned.</div>

3. Centering Images with CSS

Most browsers will display images centered using the same text-align property, it’s not a good idea to rely on that technique, you should explicitly tell the browser that the image is a block element. Then you can center it as you would a block. Here is the CSS:

img.center {
display: block;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
}

And here is the HTML that is centered:

<img src="sample.jpg" alt="webredesign" class="center" />

4. Vertically Centering Elements using CSS

Centering elements vertically with css is something that often gives designers trouble. There are however a variety of methods for vertical centering and each is fairly easy to use.

How to vertically center items in a container:

Place the elements to be centered inside a containing element, such as a DIV.
Set a minimum height on the containing element.
Declare that that containing element is a table cell.
Set the vertical alignment to "middle".

For example:

    .vcenter {
      min-height: 12em;
      display: table-cell;
      vertical-align: middle;
    }

And here is the HTML:

    <div class="vcenter">
    <p>This text is vertically centered in the box.</p>
    </div>

There are some ways to force IE to center and then use conditional comments so that only IE sees the styles. But they are ugly. I’d rather just wait for real vertical centering to be supported in the browser.

Facebook's new app curates news stories from old media in 'distraction free' format

Facebook has announced a new mobile app named Paper that could see the social network control a significant portion of the digital news market.

The app will launch on 3 February for the iPhone in the US and promises a “distraction-free layout” by pulling in new stories from various media publications - both the established and the “emerging”.

Working with human editors, Paper will curate various sections (including sport, food, science and photography) whilst also allowing users to customize their own feed. Traditional updates and pictures from users’ friends will also be available in the app, but they will be kept separate from the news stories.

In terms of visual style and navigation, Paper appears very similar to news-curating app Flipboard. Users’ navigate through Paper with a series of swipes; going from left to right to flip through stories, and pulling up or down to expand or shrink content.

Users can also tilt their phone to pan through panorama photos whilst small, context-rich ‘cards’ are used to compress stories. This latter concept is becoming increasingly common online, with both Twitter and Google Now using these small packages of information to break up the ‘firehose’ of information online.

Paper is the first major step in Facebook’s ambitions to create “new and engaging types of mobile experience” in 2014,and some commentators believe that the app might even supplant Facebook’s current offering.

Paper doesn’t offer quite as many features as the standalone version of Facebook, but plenty of other apps have won over users by offering them a single service as simply as possible. Complex navigation doesn’t always transfer well from PCs to mobile, and Paper looks to offer a stripped down approach to Facebook that could appeal to many.

Google is putting a different twist on the concept of "automated reply" with a new tool that aims to write artificially intelligent responses to your email.

The technology is part of an update to Google's Inbox app for managing and organising email. The feature announced today

is the latest example of Google's effort to teach machines how to take over some of the tasks typically handled by humans.

The most conspicuous example so far has been Google's 6-year-old project developing cars that can drive without a human steering the wheel. Google also has been using an artificial intelligence program called "RankBrain" to help determine the pecking order in its influential Internet search results.

In this instance, Google says it has created a program that identifies which incoming emails merit quick responses and then figures out the appropriate wording. Up to three choices will be offered as a reply before it's sent. The responses that people select are supposed to help Google's computers learn which ones work best.

Google expects its new "smart reply" option to be particularly popular when people are checking emails on smartphones equipped with smaller, touch-screen keyboards.

The new feature is available to all consumers who use the free version of Inbox, as well as the more than 2 million businesses who pay for Google's suite of applications designed for work.

Google unveiled Inbox a year ago as a more sophisticated alternative to its popular Gmail service. The Mountain View, California, company hasn't said how many people have installed Inbox.

Gmail has more than 400 million worldwide users, according to the research firm comScore. Google is part of a recently formed parent company, Alphabet Inc.

02. Pattern Lab

In chemistry, atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. They have distinct properties and can't be broken down further without losing their meaning.

Translated to interfaces, atoms are basic tags, such as form labels, inputs or buttons. They also include more abstract elements like color palettes, fonts, and animations. Atoms are abstract and aren't often terribly useful on their own, but they provide a useful reference and allow you to see all your global styles laid out at a glance.

In chemistry, molecules are groups of atoms bonded together, which take on new properties as a result.

In interfaces, molecules are groups of elements that function together as a unit. For example, a form label, search input, and button atom can combine them together to form a search form molecule. Building up from atoms to molecules encourages a “do one thing and do it well” mentality, and encourages creating reusable interface patterns.

03. Sketch

Vectors mean scalability. Sketch’s Vector shapes easily adapt to changing styles, sizes and layouts, allowing you to avoid a lot of painful hand-tweaking. Sometimes though, you still need to account for physical pixels. Sketch supports this, meaning that you can fine tune when you need to.

In Sketch, every shape you create is an item in the Layers List. No more hidden paths.

With our flexible boolean operations, you can combine paths to create complex shapes, while all the parts stay 100% editable. Working on a large document? Name and group layers to keep things organized, then search by name when you need to find something.

04. Sass

Sass is an extension of CSS that adds power and elegance to the basic language. It allows you to use variables, nested rules, mixins, inline imports, and more, all with a fully CSS-compatible syntax. Sass helps keep large stylesheets well-organized, and get small stylesheets up and running quickly, particularly with the help of the Compass style library.

05. PostCSS

If you think CSS preprocessing is cool, you should check out what's being done with PostCSS. The idea is simple: it's a JavaScript-based tool for 'transforming' your CSS. The most popular PostCSS plugin seems to be Autoprefixer, which parses your CSS and adds vendor prefixes to the necessary rules by checking Can I Use for support. This makes a large portion of frameworks such as Compass unnecessary.

What I love about the concept of PostCSS is that we can polyfill any of the coming CSS features based on their not-yet-implemented specifications. This is incredibly exciting and you can do it today using cssnext – another PostCSS plugin.

06. Chrome DevTools

Just as most modern browsers are constantly being developed, so are the developer tools that ship with them. Recently, Chrome has added a few features which I've found very useful in responsive web design. Here, I want to highlight three specific features which I think are worth looking at.

These are most easily accessed by toggling 'device mode' in the Chrome DevTools. You get there by inspecting the page and clicking the little 'phone' icon in the top-left of the inspector, next to the search icon.

07. Divshot

Divshot is a static web hosting platform. Everything served by Divshot is a static file: HTML, CSS, JS, and images. Static web hosting is great for landing pages, JavaScript applications (like those using AngularJS, EmberJS, or Backbone), blogs, and more. If you aren't familiar with the difference between static hosting and something like Ruby on Rails or PHP, this article explains the difference.

08. BrowserSync

Enter BrowserSync; a free, open source tool for testing and debugging sites across all the devices in your testing lab. Not only does it sync the URL of any browser, it also syncs scroll position, clicks, form inputs, toggles and submits, and refreshes or injects CSS as you make changes. It comes with a slick UI (available by default at localhost:3001) and includes the open source project weinre which enables you to remote debug any of the devices connected to your localhost.

BrowserSync has an official Grunt plugin and works seamlessly with Gulp. It's also got an API for those looking to develop other integrations. When you're dealing with today's web, BrowserSync is seriously useful. [For more on BrowserSync, check out our tutorial in the next issue].

The folks that participate in this group are largely responsible for the new <picture> element, along with the new srcset, and sizes syntax. What has me really excited, is that the next project they intend to tackle is a solution for element queries.

Element queries will enable us to selectively apply styles based on the width of the containing element, not just the width of the viewport or device. Combine this with the ideas of pattern-driven design and new specs like Web Components and the future is looking pretty bright!

Deep Learning has had a huge impact on computer science, making it possible to explore new frontiers of research and to develop amazingly useful products that millions of people use every day. Google internal deep learning infrastructure DistBelief, developed in 2011, has allowed Googlers to build ever larger neural networks and scale training to thousands of cores in google datacenters. Google used it to demonstrate that concepts like “cat” can be learned from unlabeled YouTube images, to improve speech recognition in the Google app by 25%, and to build image search in Google Photos. DistBelief also trained the Inception model that won Imagenet’s Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge in 2014, and drove our experiments in automated image captioning as well as DeepDream.

Today google proud to announce the open source release of TensorFlow -- his second-generation machine learning system, specifically designed to correct these shortcomings. TensorFlow is general, flexible, portable, easy-to-use, and completely open source. Google added all this while improving upon DistBelief’s speed, scalability, and production readiness -- in fact, on some benchmarks, TensorFlow is twice as fast as DistBelief (see the whitepaper for details of TensorFlow’s programming model and implementation).
