Every now and then I meet a business owner who has started a business, either online or offline, who just doesn’t “get” the benefits of using Social media.

It makes me think that perhaps it is time to offer a few thoughts and suggestions that might help others take the fast track to Social media success.

First off, Social media, which ever application you choose, is not going to suddenly bring you traffic overnight simply because you create a Facebook page,Twitter account, YouTube channel or LinkedIn profile. That is not how it is going to work. But, over time it will increase your exposure and help you to create a following of people with whom a longer term relationship can be built.

Which Social media system should I choose?.

As an answer to the statement,” I don’t think Social Media will help my business” first take a look at who are the most important components in your business. Your customers right?? ….Are they using Social media?… You betcha…maybe not to promote themselves but they are in some way using it. So if you are not sure where to start, figure out first where your market hangs out and go there…Make that your guide.

Here are some ideas on which system to use and what you could make its purpose.

Facebook- Database creation and relationship building.

• Setup a Business page with an opt-in box to collect email addresses-You are going to need a valuable offer in exchange
• Regularly post updates that contain useful information
• Use a search application like Advanced Search 2.2 beta to specifically find potential clients. this might include joining targeted groups
• Maintain a consistent look and feel to your pages. remember this is not your personal profile it is your business page which is an extension of your web page.The replacement for FBML is called I-Frames and it allows your web pages to be displayed directly on a Facebook tab..

Twitter- Dynamic updates and smart linking strategy

• A micro blogging site so you can use headlines and shortened links to drive traffic to your webpage
• Use the search function to locate your prospects using keywords and mutual interests
• Quick updates to carry on a theme or strategy.

You Tube-Traffic Generation and Sales Conversion Strategy

• Promote your business visually using online video
• Teach your market exactly what they need to know about your product and how to use it
• Keyword enrich your video’s so they can be searched
• Create an emotional journey for your viewers and reinforce with a defined call to action whether it is to buy or to opt-in.
• Preparing visual content to use to keep viewers on your web page for longer which helps your “Google” juice.

LinkedIn

• A professional profile to promote you, not so much your company. (although this is now changing with new initiatives being brought to the table by the designers of the site)
• A chance to network with potential Joint Venture partners
• Market information and advice from other professionals that can be used for the benefit of your own business
• Exposure to opportunities that you wouldn’t usually get a chance to benefit from..

These four are the ones that I focus on with regards to my own business. I have set them up so that they share information between applications in order to optimize my time at the keyboard. The one drawback of Social Media can be the time it takes to maintain a consistent strategy.

REMEMBER: Your customers use Social media to communicate with each other, share stories and experiences. Those experiences will also include their thoughts about doing businesses with companies  like yours. Treat them well, get to know them and most of all let them get to know you..

And now to the very important update…

Facebook just introduced several improvements to Facebook Pages that we are told will ultimately allow brands large and small to establish and maintain much better relationships with their fans, while making the Business Pages more relevant to the audiences that surf there.

Here are the changes and what they mean for YOU and YOUR fans.

New Facebook Layout

This new update was hinted at way back in December when there was an accidental release of the new layout and subsequent recall and removal. The new layout looks and feels similar to the layout of the new Facebook Profiles and actually features many of these same enhancements. The new Pages layout has removed the tabs at the top of the Page and now presents the same side-bar navigation as the Facebook Profiles. The update also added the top of screen photo showcase and additional info display. If you see the right-side of the Page it has also received a makeover. The lovely folks at Facebook have unveiled a section that will highlight the Page’s admins ( if the admin so chooses). Similarly, on the right-side panels there is now  a section showcasing how many of the user’s friends have also “liked” the Page they are viewing and features interests they have in common.

It has changed the look and the feel of the page but it shouldn’t take too long to adjust.

What does this means for you and your fans?

The layout gives a more efficient and cleaner approach to any business  Page. It still allows a clear expression of your brand by way of the photo stream and customizable information sharing at the top. For fans, it’s similar to their own Profiles making navigation very seamless. The whole point being ease of assimilation and navigation. It also quickly gives them access to the most useful information (top and side-bar navigation). The mutual interests and shared friends really gives users a strong connection with your Page and makes it much more relevant to them. And for business that has got to be good..doesn’t it??

Facebook now gives better Communication

Page administrators are now able to completely communicate as the Page (or their brand) nearly everywhere on Facebook–posts, comments and likes on other Pages can appear as the brand and not the individual admin through a feature called “Login as Page.” By logging in as the Page you manage, you can interact with the Facebook community as the Page. You cannot, however, interact directly with users by posting on their wall or commenting on a status UNLESS the user has given “everybody” that permission in their privacy settings. When a user is logged in as a Page, they see a completely different News Feed–it’ll show them relevant content from the Pages they’ve “liked.” Another equally important update related to efficient communication is in the notifications to Page admins. When a user is logged in as a Page, they can choose to get notifications (via traditional on-site notifications or via email) for new “likes” and other activity (interactions) occurring on their Page. So when you go to click the account link and look for manage pages you are presented with “use Facebook as Page”.  Don’t let this throw you.. What does this mean for you and your fans?

This has HUGE implications for brands. Now your brand has a presence on Facebook beyond your stand-alone Page. You can respond to negative comments and posts on other Pages AS YOUR BRAND. You can also endorse or support partner Pages as your brand. The News Feed view for Page admins will allow you to stay updated on the latest and most important news from other Pages you care about. And the notifications will give you insight into new fan/like acquisition as well as an easy way to manage incoming activity on your Page. This gives your fans easy access to interact with you in other ways. It also should give them a faster response time from your brand.

Everyone Filter

Imagine being able to easily access the hottest topics and discussions on a Page? Now you can! As part of the changes, Facebook added an “Everyone” filter which when selected brings the most engaging posts and threads to the top of the Page.

What does this mean for you and your fans?

With the click of a button, you are able to see the most “liked” and commented conversations on your Page and engage and monitor those conversations seamlessly. For fans who choose this filter, they can really get a feel for the conversations that take place on your Page. A post from your friend with 50 comments from fans is much more inviting and relevant than whatever may appear at the top of the Page with the previous recency-ordered filters. Relevancy is king on the internet.

Advanced Admin Controls

This update may be coming at a later date, but there will be significant improvements to the admin control settings. Admins will be able to HIDE posts (spam and posts containing words on your customized Blocklist). While fans will only have the options to filter posts “by page” or by “everyone,” admins can see “hidden” and “most recent.” Which at the end of the day is what being an admin is all about anyway..

What does this mean for you and your fans?

Thankfully this this gives the admin entity much more control over the monitoring process and allows admins to easily toggle between posts as and when they want to and also to manage spam or potentially harmful posts by overzealous fans. And on the fans side of things this should also mean a faster response time and in theory a better stream of information from the brand.

The changes launched today are in preview mode and will be unrolled across the wider platform on March 10, 2011. During the preview mode, admins can see the preview of the new Page layout and decide if they want to make the switch. Important  note though, once you opt-in to upgrade your Pages to the new design, there is no way to revert back to the old layout. So tread carefully especially if you have things inside your content you wish to change or backup. If your brand image requires a certain layout then you have until the tenth to look into maintaining that look.

Now if you need any help with this get hold of me quickly. As of March 10th you will have had to have made your mind up..I have been reading many comments for and against these changes. WORDPRESS Plugin by Aweber.com

There are many thousands of plugins that have been written for WordPress and many of them are fantastic additions to your WordPress website. But one that has only recently been released and in my humble opinion is one of the most useful plugins around is the Aweber WordPress Plugin.

This is a really useful plugin because it allows the owner of the site to very quickly and easily add an all important opt-in box to his sidebar without having to go and visit Aweber.com to create and then cut and paste html or java code and then go back and paste that code into the sidebar text widget every time they set up a website..

All the configuration and selection is done from the widget itself. All you need to have done already is obviously setup an Aweber account and a list name that you have created to house the leads that come flooding (hopefully) to your site and the webform that you want. The rest becomes very easy.

So here are the steps..Go to Plugins>add New  

Select the Plugin and Install and activate

Authorise the Plugin with an Aweber API code

Next Step…

Once that has been done go to Appearance > Widgets and select the newly installed Aweber Widget and place it in your side bar.

Drag the Aweber Widget into the sidebar and select your List

Then Select Your Web form. You can Preview it or just save and away you go. It will interface directly back to your Aweber database management.

I find this incredibly convenient and easy to use.

If you want your OPt-in box to be placed in the content of your page or post you will still have to copy and paste the HTML code but this gives you a quick way of populating your sidebar.

Well, the new year is now upon us and for those of you in Business it is a chance to take stock of what happened last year and decide whether you want more of the same, less of the same or something completely different.

All of you have websites and I want to focus in on using the websites as one of your most powerful tools.

Lets imagine it to be the salesperson in your business that never sleeps, it is the store front that never closes and the light house that never turns off its light, trying to attract customers like moths to a flame..

In short it is the one tool that delivers you a really good return on your investment so long as you apply some basic principles..

Here are 5 things that I suggest you may wish to review so that your site is doing its best for your bottom line..

1. A Lead capture generation process…

If your website is a Lead generation tool then it is very important to make sure that it is designed to attract exactly the right kind of leads and once they get there, make sure you give something of value and at the very minimum collect email addresses. Set the site up as a landing page so that as soon as they arrive you have made an offer of value that, if accepted, is delivered immediately. On all our sites we make use of a really good database creation tool called Aweber . It collects email addresses, allows message tracking, manages your database and tracks the clicks made by your readers.. In fact you may have noticed that this newsletter is managed by Aweber. There’s proof in the pudding that it works eh??

2. Optimise the written content for Search Engine indexing

There is a strategy behind writing any content and putting it online. It’s called SEO ( Search Engine Optimisation) and it basically gets you to develop content so that Google and other search engines, view your sites and indexes it easily so that your browser is able to deliver the results of a viewers search request quickly and easily, and based on how well indexed your site is Google gives it a priority when it displays it.. Your goal is to set it up so well that your site arrives on page 1 of those results..And find a good tool to tell you whether or not your site is working well.

3. Start Blogging and Set up your RSS..

Whoa there…! I heard you say…Whats Blogging and What the heck is RSS..???  Well two very key ingredients to creating traffic to your website actually. A blog is a way to start creating a following of people who like your content so much they just keep coming back to your site and the RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) is a way to allow them to subscribe to your content and read it so they don’t have to physically visit your site to read it.. How does that sound…easy?? Well actually it is easy,  as long as you follow some simple steps. But lets back up a second  , why would you start a blog?? Quite simply so that you can keep a regular contact with your customers and attract new customers..Your goal is to be come viewed as an expert and have people like what you are talking about or like the environment that you are creating. An example of a reasonable blog is www.kiwiblog.co.nz where the community has been built up because the owner of the site has set it up so that people are encouraged to comment..Imagine being able to do that with your customer community..  It might work or it might not but by having a good blog going it opens up the channels to market to people who already think your content is valuable.. Setting up an RSS feed is reasonably simple as well. I am using a service called feedburner to allow people to subscribe to my sites. I will be filming an instructional video very shortly to show you how to set that up so stay tuned..

4. Video

Well at the risk of rambling on about something that I am passionate about and boring you all to tears, I have to say that using video on your websites is by far….the… most… effective sales tool in your arsenal when it is combined with a good blog.. Teach your market how to appreciate your product or service and educate them how they can get the best out of it..Sometime I overdo the words “Emotional Journey” but it captures exactly what the idea is with video and what you must do for your viewers..Allow them to make a buying decision from their keyboards..It so reinforces your call to action which by the way many people seem to forget about. So now you won’t..

5. Analytics

Why is analytics the last of the 5? Well simply put if you dont know where your customers are coming from its very very hard to put some bait out to bring in some more. The most widley know Analytics package is the googel one. And since they purchased the software off of the company in wall street , the analytics that they promote has had several great features added to it. Look at it this way, using the google tool will tell you which keywords have been used to find you, when they arrived , how long they stayed on your site and where they went within your site. Isnt that kind of like having a retail shop?  Of course it is…if you dont collect those kinds of numbers it is harder to keep improving the performance of your site. Imagine you have an e-commerce site and you know that one little string of keywords brings a flood of customers…If you didnt realise that they were responsible for that flood of traffic then you wouldnt really be able to optimise the site or even worse in your tweaking of the site you might even get rid of them… Its valuable information.

So, there you go.. 5 important things you should be considering for your website  , what ever it is and whatever it sells. And again at the risk of boring you to tears, we chose WordPress for our training courses because it gives its site owners ease of administration and the ability to add those 5 little beauties quickly and easily..

At the end of the day, business is always about relationships. The old adage, “its not what you know but rather who you know” has closed so many deals over the years that bears this point out.

Social Media Isn’t Something New

Technical knowledge will help you deliver the product or service but it is a good strong relationship and the trust that comes with that, that really keeps the wheels of business going. And that is why, for me the surge of Social Media onto the world stage isn’t actually something new. Sure it is being delivered by the power of the internet but the underlying concept of people getting to know people hasn’t really changed.

What has changed is that age demographics have changed the delivery mechanism so that you get to know someone a lot faster and more in depth online before you even get a chance to meet them face to face, the old fashioned way. Oh and borders are now a thing of the past as well because as we know, the world wide web has most certainly broken those down.

So what does Social Media do in real Business term??  There are a couple of things that Social Media ( and I’m going to focus here on the big 4, Facebook, Twitter., YouTube and LinkedIn because they are the 4 that I use in my business ) allows a business to bring to the table and leverage off of in the same moment.

Third party Validation

Where other people extol your virtues through their own Social Media Portals and articles and Blogs. In business terms this takes a way the fear element for anyone considering using you..Nothing is more powerful for your business in terms of bringing new people to you than a testimonial or a validation. Social Media certainly gives people the chance to do that.

How Can you build a Database with Social Media

Once you have created a Social profile and you start getting viewers interested in knowing more about you, you can then start offering them the opportunities of receiving valuable information in exchange for their contact details and in particular their email addresses. The exchange of information needs to one of value. Otherwise they will not stay around for very long. The other thing is the process of supplying an email  address must be followed up quickly with the “value offer” being delivered straight into their in-box. Here a good email marketing application must be in place. Firstly to deliver the report quickly but also to allow you to manage your growing database efficiently.This writer makes us of an application called Aweber.

It is this product that allows quick and easy management of the growing database.

So will having a Social profile allow you to grow a huge database overnight?. Well that’s why this article mentions the crock pot. Its a slow cooker and must be worked on over time..Bringing people to you is easy but keeping them interested comes down to how they feel about the relationship. ok  Using an Opt in box is all about offerring your viewers something of value in exchange for their contact details.

I have been reading and listening to various newspapers and radio and television channels down here in New Zealand and there is a theme creeping in. That theme is that the recession we have all been living through is slowly coming to an end and all our collective economies are back in a growth phase..And I must say I have to agree with it.

The Economy has Turned a Corner

The signs I am seeing in our economy are that it has turned a corner. Its still a long way back to where it was before the downward spiral for sure, and dont forget, there is still some cleaning up to do and many,many governments will have to do some creative accounting to get those economies back up and running, but it is now heading in the right direction.

So what are you going to do about it?? Will you wait for the recovery to arrive or will you get off your butt and go out there and make things happen. Both personally and financially.

As Jim Rohn said so eleoquently, “if you keep doing the things you always did, you’ll keep getting the things you always got”.

The experience you had over the last 2 years will be repeated for you unless you take stock now and decide to do it differently. The great thing about a recession is that it shakes all the dead wood from the tree and you suddenly learn just how tough you are, how robust are your beliefs and just how much opportunity surrounds us all if only we have the eyes to see it. Well, there’s nothing like hard times to make us look at life with different eyes.. But I ask you again, what are you going to do to bring about a change in your curcumstances.

You Have Some Choices

In my humble opinion you have a couple of choices to make and the first is to work for somone else and the second to work for yourself. In either of these cases you can sink back into the same habits and mindsets that has got you this far. But if it hasnt taken you where you want to go then it is imperitive you must change your habits and you MUST change your mindsets. As a Business Coach its my role to get my clients to take a good long and hard look at their goals.

Without a Goal There Can be No Victory….

No Truer words can be spoken in jest..  If you have read one of my earlier posts you will see that I am a believer in starting a business to either sell it or to turn it into an entity that produces revenue without you as a business owner having to be there to run it..Well right there is a goal. If the business requires you to be there then that can provide you with a chain around your neck that can quite often drag you to plummetous depths.. So you came through the recession, and now what??  well what have you learned from these tough times…

There is nothing like a good recession to teach you what your strengths are and also what your weaknesses are. Is this a good time for you to follow strengths or to follow a weakness. What can be added to your product offerring that is a good fit for your business or your lifestyle.

Adopt these 5 measurements in your business and let them make your business profitable:

1. Leads- How many potential customers can you introduce to your business?
2. Conversions- How many of those potentials can you turn into actuals?
3. Average Value of Sale- What is the average value of each transaction with those customers?
4. Profit Margin- How much actual money has a sale brought into your business?
5. Repeat Business- A measurement of how great an experience your customers have had in your sales process.Are you good enough to have them buying from you a second and third time?

For a start any business needs customers. Well thats a no brainer really but you’d be surprised how many business owners dont seem to factor in the need to keep bringing new customers to your door. But what do you do.. go after new customers or look after the ones you have? Well, in my humble opinion I would probably put more effort into keeping the ones you already have simply because you have probably already spent money on getting them. In business terms it is a low aquisition cost…

Having said that, you obviously also need to be bringing fresh prospects through the door to replace the natural attrition from your database..
So whats your strategy for doing that…?? Advertise?,Market?,Referrals? Well, done properly all these methods will bring you in new business without a doubt. The question I always ask is whether the money being spent on bringing new prospects into your business is producing a profitable result for you. That is to say are you bringing in the right KIND of customer. Dont say “who are my customers”, say “who do I want as my customers”. Use that as your main lead creation strategy. Identify them and go after them.

Next, say you have the right kind of customers interested enough to take a look at you to do business with. Thats great right?? You have now moved to the Conversion stage. Now this stage is so important becuase its the stage where the money happens for the first time. Your prospects suddenly become your clients.
Or do they.?? If you get 100 people walking into your shop and you only sell something to 5 of them, thats very poor 5% conversion rate. If you have some testing in place you will know these numbers.
What could be going wrong? Your goal is 60-70% conversions right.. Either you are bringing in the wrong kind of customers or you are just a very poor salesman or your product simply sucks.. If your conversion rates are that low then you know where you need to focus. Better leads or better sales process.

If you are building an online business then your website needs to have a database capturing process. Everything you do online must be part of the lead generation strategy which then brings traffic to your nerve center

Over the weekend I happened to walk into a local business while out shopping. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a nice warm sounding voice coming across the shop, as the man behind the counter was talking with the patrons who were up in front of me. I wondered if I had suddenly walked onto the set of the twilight zone. Everyone was smiling as they all were watching a master at work. And what was he doing? He was communicating to his customers and giving them a great experience. This is the stuff of retail legend and something that sadly is lacking in many retail stores. But it was wonderful to watch and when my own turn came I realised that I was smiling even before I got to the counter as there was a mirror in behind this chap so I smiled even more as I anticipated what was to come. It was a great experience for sure.

How do you make your customers feel? 

Do you let them know they are worthwhile? Do you empower your staff to look after your most valuable asset?

It doesnt take to much effort to smile at them and make them feel like you really care. Its going to make them keep coming back and even better, they will relay their experience to people they know and that is where the real benefit comes into play. Your database will grow and your customer aquisition cost will reduce. And that goes straight to the bottom line. And believe me that is very healthy for your bank balance.

If you are the business owner it is so important to take just a little time to keep renewing your relationship with your customers.

As I walked away I remembered a little short film I had seen that shows the power of really caring about people. Its a manufactured situation but shows very well what a little bit of communication and a smile can do for your business. Enjoy the film but more importantly, think about how you make your customers feel when they do business with you.

How can you teach someone to be a business owner?

One of the things that I notice is that with all the opportunity flying around on the internet, with all the “Business Opportunities” on offer, there doesnt seem to be much being said to “prospective networkers” about what they must do to prepare themselves “before” they enter the industry. What lifestyle changes they must make and what new disciplines  must they take on to make a real go of it..

And lets face it…, if you dont have the capacity to adopt a disciplined approach because its not in your character, then all the MLM “secrets” and the “trainings ” and “webinars” and “meetings” and “events” are really there for the people who are already in the system and not for the ones who are in the process of considering it…

If you look around at the Networking Industry and actually have a good hard logical look and not an emotionally charged look at it, all the positioning is being done to show the opportunity as being the selling point. Why is that.??   Obviously if it wasnt such a great opportunity then people wouldnt be attracted to it.

If you have spent money to get into it its unlikely that you are going to tell people that it is not a good opportunity..are you??? That would be the same thing as closing the doors on your business.

Would it??  Maybe not… depending on who you are saying it to..

Sorry But This Opportunity Is just Not For You….

How would it feel to be able to say that to a prospect and why would you say that to a prospect…?

Well here’s why… Because you have filtered them out and they just dont meet the criteria of people you are looking for…even before they sign the application.

Now this scenario is unheard of in 99% of Networking Opportunities because every bit of effort is spent getting people signed up and into the system just as fast as you can say “welcome to the team” but imagine how sustainable your business growth would be if you were bringing just the right kind of person into your business. Someone who knew how to run a business and he was passionate about running it. What amazing downline you would have.

What would a prospect need to have to be a perfect member of your team..?? Here’s 5 criteria for you to consider..

1.  A reason to go into business for themselves. Without an emotional driver a prospect will not be able to sustain the committment required to go the hard yards

2. A disciplined approach to goal setting. Take a look at how they run their lives. Are they already successful or do they lack the skills to be successful at anything..Its a hard call but how much time will you have to spend just helping them set goals and getting organised.

3. Are they Coachable enough to learn your system inside and out..Why the MLM industry is littered with failures is because it lacks networking professionals. People who know how to make it a career.

4. Do they spend time developing their mindset. Without personal growth there will be no business growth

5. Are they the kind of people you would like to go into business with or become friends with.

These are 5 items that I would suggest you consider when you are looking for downline for your business. Putting time into downline who just have not got what it takes can be the straw that broke the camels back. Your business would be far healthier if you said no more often than you said yes..

The 6th item for you to consider is how do you  prospect for these kind of people. The internet is becoming a huge ally of the modern day MLM’r but that still provides you with many prospects who should be filtered out unless they are serious enough to invest money in the process of looking for an opportunity.
