Six Steps to make your client Happy

Catching attention and bringing in new clients is easier than it seems. A lot of it is down to keeping your existing clients happy, offering a fantastic customer service, and generally doing things to keep your clients in a positive mood about whatever it is you do for them, whether you’re a graphic or web designer, web developer, or even a photographer. This article outlines eight great tips to help keep your clients super happy, ultimately resulting in long-term clients and even a longer client list!

Step 1: Keep A Positive Attitude

Some clients know a lot about the creative industry, and can sometimes surprise to just how much they actually know, especially if they’ve been in the same job or running the same business for a long time. These clients are usually generally easy to keep hold of, so long as you get the work done to a good standard. Others, however, are amateurs, and either think they know more than you about your professional field but actually don’t know much at all (these are the bad clients – you can usually tell instantly if a bad client has approached you if they something along the lines of “I have made a proof of the design I want in Microsoft Office”, or just generally don’t know much about design and are happy to let you get on with it (these are the good clients, who leave almost everything up to you).

Mainly because of the several types of clients I listed above, it’s not always easy to keep a positive attitude whilst working for them – some know exactly what they want and won’t stop harrassing you until it’s perfect, others don’t know what they want at all and don’t stop harrassing you until you’ve made thirty-odd-thousand revisions, and then there are some that are fine and just let you get on with it. So, what can you do to keep a positive attitude?

Listen To Your Client

However much they annoy you and make you feel like your blood cells are about to burst from your veins and splatter all over the ceiling, try your hardest to listen and to pay attention to what they’re saying. Wait until after they’ve finished talking to make your own suggestions, instead of interupting them, otherwise they may also get annoyed, resulting in a bad relationship on both ends and probably leaving you without some work, which definitely isn’t worth it just because you couldn’t bare to listen for any longer!

Show Your Client Examples Of Work

Show them examples of your ideas, whether existing work from your portfolio, or work of other creatives – you could print some examples of work that have a relation to their company or project (i.e. if your client wants a brochure designed for their clothing company, look for some great examples of brochures related to apparel design or fashion) and show them when at a meeting, or send it via email. This could be a great opportunity to show off your technology, too – why not upload the photos to your iPhone or iPad (when it has been released, of course!) and flick through some examples this way? This way your client can interact, keeping them happy and possibly making another conversation about the device, which helps to build up a happy working relationship. Discuss what you like about the shown examples, and what they like, and come up with your own (rough) ideas whilst you are still with the client.

Discuss The Ideas

Discuss the ideas and try to repeat some of their ideas in their inital brief/speech to keep them happy, and to make sure they know you were listening to them when you first spoke about the particular project.

Make the Footer Stick to the Bottom of a Page

There are several ways to make a footer stick to the bottom of a page using CSS. But until now, they've used long and messy hacks or a lot of extra HTML markup; this method uses only 15 lines of CSS and hardly any HTML markup. Even better, it's completely valid CSS, and it works in all major browsers. Internet Explorer 5 and up, Firefox, Safari, Opera and more.

Add the following lines of CSS to your stylesheet. The negative value for the margin in .wrapper is the same number as the height of .footer and .push. The negative margin should always equal to the full height of the footer (including any padding or borders you may add).

5 Ways to Add Value to Your Work as a Web Designer

Let’s face it… we’re in a day and age where someone can buy a domain, hosting, and install a premium WordPress theme in the same time that some designers take to respond with a job quote/request for proposal.

On top of that, many designers are attempting a race to the bottom by lowering rates and adding a myriad of services they wouldn’t have offered years prior.

It seems to me that times are a bit rough, and as a result, designers loosen standards in order to get — and keep — more clients.

But there’s a problem with that: You don’t have the stamina to race to the bottom. None of us do.

Our time is worth much more than that, and our sanity even more so.

But what do you do? How can you compete with people that offer cheaper services or are willing to do the work you don’t want to do?

The answer is simple: You don’t.

Here are some tips and ideas for adding value to your work as a web designer.

1. Stop Racing to the Bottom

Rather than chase nickel and dimers, consider moving in the opposite direction — chase the people that have money and are willing to spend it. This might even mean raising your rates (scary, I know) or being more selective with the clients you take on, but it’s an important step in making the game work for you.

I recently had the opportunity to interview several of the top designers in my field and one of the similarities between all of them was the fact that when the market wanted them to go lower, they chose to go higher. And it worked.

I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but the reality is that if you’re fighting over scraps, then you’ll have nothing but scraps. However, if you can raise your rates and take fewer clients in the process, then you can focus on doing nothing but great work.

2. Cater to a Specific Demographic

Obviously, if you are going to raise your rates, then you need to be able to provide the value to match. One of the best ways to do this is become the go-to guy or gal for a specific niche rather than trying to become a one-stop shop.

If you do best with mini-sites (e.g. single page websites and vCard sites), then become a mini-site designer. If you do best designing niche blogs, then brand yourself as the niche blogging design guru. If you prefer corporate sites, then pitch corporate clients.

It’s easy to think that in trying to serve everyone, you can make more money, but the truth is that as a consumer, I want to know you are an expert in doing what I need you to do. If I need a logo, I go to a logo designer, and if I need a blog, I go to a blog designer.

Brand yourself as a specialist rather than a generalist, and you’ll be much more of an attractive option for your target market.

3. Know What Your Market Wants

Now, if you’re going to target a specific audience, then it’s important that you know how to best serve them. For a Silicon Valley startup, you might need to focus on high conversions and optimization. If you’re working for authors, maybe you need to learn how to make their books look great.

I’ve been on both sides of the coin, and each time I’m amazed by designers that prefer the harmony of their design over my ability to get more newsletter subscribers, buyers, and readers.

On the other side, it’s important to remember that not every client knows what works best in their industry, but that doesn’t mean you should turn them down. Remember, you’re the expert — so act like one. Don’t be afraid to share your expertise. In many cases, this will give them even more confidence in your vision.

4. Don’t Forget the Little Things

Aside from my work as a freelancer, I also own a few web shops, from which I sell a variety of eBooks and other learning courses. When I’m designing these sites, it’s important that the product, logo, and website all match. That being said, I’m amazed by how many designers might offer to design eBooks but not the website hosting the book. It happens the other way too. Designers love to stick to one thing, such as site design, while completely ignoring a client’s need to have a book to match.

There are many little things that designers miss (nuggets of opportunities). Here are a few examples:

Web banners
Social network brand design such as Twitter background/profile design
Avatar photos for a uniform social media brand
Icon design
eBook template design such as a PDF template for eBooks or whitepapers

Your clients might not know they need these things. Take the initiative to start the conversation.

Now, I’m not asking you to become a one-stop shop, but try to put yourself in your client’s shoes. What do they need? Many times, it’s more than what you’re offering.

5. Follow Up

I’m amazed by how many designers miss this important part of the marketing process. You’ve done all of the work to get the sale, to design something amazing, and to make money, but then you forget about follow-up.

Why?

A customer is your greatest asset. Not only are they a perfect feedback mechanism, but they also make great returning customers.

Do you keep your clients on an email list? If not, how are you going to let them know that you’re offering a sale or a new service?

Sometimes, they might contact you for a quick favor, or a question about their site. I believe that it’s important you respond quickly and with an offer to help. Believe it or not, good designers are tough to come by, and people love to hold on to the good ones.

Simply offering help, post-sale, is a great way to build a referral marketing funnel. If you keep them happy, they might tell a friend, or several. Heck, they might even blog about you.

In my experience, referrals not only make the best customers, but are the easiest to obtain.

Simple Strategies Work

You don’t have to become a marketing freak, but using a few techniques from that Marketing 101 class can come in handy, especially when times are tough. Instead of looking for more ways to cut rates and reduce costs, look for more ways to provide value and differentiate yourself from the competition.

This is how you build a reputation and become an asset to the community rather than someone just groveling for clients.

When trying to start affiliate marketing in a particular niche, you have to have basic knowledge of the niche, such as the type of audience, the buyer intent, the competition and which type of product works best in that niche. You wouldn’t want to be promoting ebooks in a niche where they love to buy books in hardcover.

2. The Right Product

After you know the type of market and what works best, you wouldn’t just want to start promoting any product you see, this isn’t going to work! Another crucial step to making money online from affiliate marketing is promoting the right product. I have discovered that promoting products from big brands tend to convert better because the big companies will have done a lot of the marketing work, and your prospect would have come across the product on several occasions, he/she will be more likely to buy it than other products he/she is coming across for the first time.

Another thing you should note is that if a product has been over-promoted, you might not get the best from your promotion efforts because most of the buyers would have gone after the recommendations of a guru in the niche, thereby leaving you with less opportunity to make sales.

3. Focus on Trust

Another core factor that determines how you make it with affiliate marketing is trust. It is very important to focus on building trust with your prospects first. It is very important to know that it is easier to destroy your trust than it is to build it. If you worked hard on building trust with your readers, you can destroy that trust by promoting the wrong product.

There are several ways to build trust with your readers (or to-be customers) and one of the best ways to build trust is by making sure you give value. If you are promoting your affiliate products via your blog, it is very important to focus on writing high-quality, valuable content first because this will help you win the trust of your readers, thereby making them buyers.

4. Get Traffic

One thing I have noticed from most people who believe affiliate marketing is difficult is that most of them have little to no traffic. Affiliate marketing success doesn’t stop in you researching the market or having the right product, you also have to focus on getting traffic to your affiliate links. When it comes to getting traffic, there are different types of traffic but getting high-quality traffic from the right place works best. One major source of traffic you should focus on as an affiliate marketer is search engine traffic because you only need to work once, and once you could secure your spot in the search engines you will begin to get traffic on autopilot.

Another great advantage of search engine traffic is that it converts better than any other traffic source because search engine visitors are more targeted – they came in a search for something.

While search engine traffic is not the only way to get traffic, there are several other ways to get high-quality traffic to your blog and I will be listing 5 of them below:

Despite there being several other decent jQuery Cheat Sheets out there, none were what I was looking for.

I wanted:

More than just a dump of method names
Where callbacks receive arguments, make it clear what those are
Where method functionality may be confusing, clarify it
Explain confusing selector syntax
Give simple examples on methods that are used often but the syntax may be easily forgotten

Here’s something everyone should like, free vectors! This pack includes 120+ hand-drawn arrows and other elements. I even snuck in some hand-drawn RSS logos, and social marketing icons. I’m a big fan of the whole ‘hand drawn’ stuff, and an avid “doodler”, so I figured I’d put something together. They are set up so that they are very easy to change colors, and use right off. I’m attaching a little preview, but it does not contain all of the vectors. Again, these were cool to make, and I hope yall can make use of them. Any feedback is appreciated!
