Het krijgen van “toegang” tot de sociale media is echter niet voor iedereen weggelegd. Wat als je niet zo goed kunt lezen? Wat als je een lichte verstandelijke handicap hebt? Wat als je visueel gehandicapt bent? Hoe gebruiksvriendelijk de bestaande sociale media ook zijn, bepaalde groepen binnen de samenleving worden buitengesloten.

Een aantal jaren geleden heb ik het project “Down on the web” geïnitieerd om te onderzoeken in hoeverre Hyves gebruiksvriendelijk te maken is voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking. De komende tijd hoop ik binnen het Sociale media lectoraat de kans te krijgen dit onderzoek op een gedegen manier voort te zetten. Technische ontwikkelingen zoals Touch apparaten/ Apps en de apis van de sociale netwerken geven veel aanknopingspunten om nieuwe groepen toegang te geven tot sociale netwerken.

Sometime ago Google added time slots to Google Calendar making wannac.me obsolete. I still feel that the basic web service I created would be really useful for small businesses, if I would just choose a better and smaller market. The Google solution is great for geeks, but what about people that just want an appointment with a dentist or a hairdresser?

For now I will work on tweetexposure.com and striim.it.

Lets say you want to search for Jackson, but not for Michael Jackson.
Go to tweetexposure.com and type in: jackson -michael and click go. You should only see messages about Jackson.

Or perhaps you want to search for multiple hashtags at once like XFactor and Winning:
Go to tweetexposure.com and type in: #XFactor AND #winning. You should see messages that both mention winning and factor.

If your searching for tweets that have one hashtag or the other:
Go to tweetexposure.com and type in: #XFactor OR #winning. You should see messages that mention winning or factor or both.

Want to see just positive tweets? Just add : – ) (without the spaces) to your query.

In preparation:

1. Make sure the audience members are able to find each other on the web. Clearly communicate a short hashtag they can use on twitter.
2. Start a twitter account for the conference and use it to give away information about speakers etc. Give frequent updates, one update each workday will do.
3. You might want to add a twitter widget to your event website. Personally I prefer to just mention the twitter account and the hashtag on the event website. Twitter widgets for your website can be found on the twitter widget website
4. If your hosting a conference ask the speakers to post a twittermessage with the hashtag of the conference
5. Follow the twitter messages of the speakers and retweet messages that are interesting for the audience of the conference.
6. Make sure you give timely answers when asked  a question on twitter.

During the event:

1. Show to the visitors of the event that twitter is being used. Show the twitter backchannel on a screen in the conference room.
2. Choose the place where you visualize the backchannel wisely. Showing it at the main stage near one of the speakers can cause problems. What will happen if the audience is not happy with the speaker? A place more near the sides of the conference room is better suited.
3. Participants of the event tend to take a lot of pictures during the event, make sure you choose a twitter wall that also shows pictures.
4. Choose a twitter backchannel that shows tweets in a clear and readable way. Cool effects and many tweets are nice on your own computer, but hard to read when only glanced at every now and then.
5. At some events you might need a moderation tool to weed out offensive tweets. This however is mainly a problem at large events. For smaller events the costs are bigger than the benefits.
6. Use twitter to communicate last minute changes to the program.

For exposure 09 I created a twitter visualizer. Main goal was to give an impression of what was happening at the event.

• Flasheff
• Some opensource lib I found on google code that I modified somewhat so that it uses JSON in stead of atom. I forgot where I found it. I only modified the search method, because that’s the only method I needed.
• An adobe library for parsing JSON.

The twitter-hash-tag the application follows can be found in the exposure package in the class TwitterRunner. The TwitterRunner class contains some horrible hack for the name of the month it displays.The TwitterStream class manages fetching of the tweets.

It only works offline because of Flash security restrictions. If you want to create an online version, you should create a proxy in your favorite serverside language.
