Google Phone = Free Phone Calls

Nope, I’m not talking about some obscure (and unpopular) new google smartphone here, I’m talking about free calls to the US or Canada through Google Phone, in your gmail account! Yesterday I was checking one of my lesser used gmail accounts and noticed a new item under my chat window on the left that said Call phone. They haven’t actually come up with a name for the new feature, I just made up Google Phone as it seems like a logical name.

hmm, that sounds interesting. So I grabbed my microphone headseat and gave it a try. I calleda friend in Canada and it said it was free, and on top of that my friend had no idea I was calling through my laptop, as the voice quality was so clear.

As is quite often the case, Google unveiled this new amazing Skype killer with little (or any??) fanfare on Wednesday August 25, 2010. I don’t know how long it will last, but for 2010calls to the U.S. and Canada are free. For now, this is only available to gmail users in theUnited States. This is a great addition to their already amazing video chat feature. It seems they are out to crush Skype with agressive pricing to other countries. For example, calls to India are only 6 cents, Italy 2 cents, and Dominican Republic only $.06. These prices are all lower than skype.

It’s super easy to use:

Click on Call Phone

Select Country, and dial phone number.

Hit Call and wait for it to ring and the person to answer.

Just make sure you have a microphone and your computer volume is turned up.

While this is pretty awesome stuff, I won’t be entirely impressed until I see a Google Phone app for my HTC Incredible Android based phone. Until then, I’ll still have to use Skype on my phone. Come Google, get’er done!

Transfer a Phpld Link Directory To New Host

Yesterday, I sold one of my PHP Link Directory script link directories, and in the deal I agreed to transfer the phpld directory and template files to the buyers server. In my mind it seemed like a quick and easy task to transfer an existing PHPLD link directory to a new host. I was right and wrong.

If you do the steps in the correct order it is a quick and easy process. If you do them in the wrong order (like this webchicklet did), well, you better get up and make another pot of coffee. That being said, I figure I’m not the only one doing this kind of thing, so here’s a quick step by step guide on how to transfer ownership of a phpld link directory, including how to export the phpld sql link database, and import it into the new installation on the buyers side.

First off, things started off good as the buyer wanted to host the phpld directory at Hostmonster, the best web hosting service in my opinion, and the one where my phpld link directory was currently hosted. So I was already comfortable with their very easy to use cpanel and file manager.

This assumes you’ve transferred the domain and have the hosting set up for the buyer.

Step 1: Export your current phpld link directory sql database to your computer.

Open your hosts cpanel and select PHPMyAdmin in the Databases section. Select the database your phpld link directory is using and you’ll see a screen like this (click on photo to enlarge):

Select the Export tab, it’ll default to sql file, and hit go to export and save the file to your computer.

Step 2: Copy all files and directories in your current templates folder

Using FileZilla, or your ftp client of choice, log in to your current host and navigate to the directory your phpld installation resides.

Open the templates directory, and download the entire contents to a new folder on your computer.

Step 3: Create new database on new (buyers) server

Login to your buyers cpanel, or have him/her log into it if they are doing it themselves. Open up MySQL Database Wizard and run through the easy steps of creating a new db name, a new database user/password, and grant all writing permissions. Be sure to write down all these database names and user/passwords, as you’ll need them for the new phpld installation.

Step 4: Import your saved database into new server’s database

Now that you’ve created a new (and empty) phpld database, you’ll need to import the sql database that you saved from your old host.

Open phpMyAdmin in cpanel again (on the buyers/new host), select the database you just created, and select the Import tab on top. Hit the Choose File button, and select the saveddbname.sql file you had exported earlier.

Hit Go, and barring any unforseen problems it should populate the new databse with all the users, links, emails, etc that were stored in the phpld link directory.

Step 5: Download and install new PHPLD script on new server

This one is easy, just upload all the script files/directories and follow the Phpld install instructions from the install.txt file included in the download.

Step 6: Upload your saved template files to the new PHPLD installation

Using FileZilla again, upload the template files to the template directory (overwriting the existing ones if you are using the FREE PHPLD version 2.x). If you are using the paid version of PHPLD (version 4) you can just upload the templates into their own sub directory and then switch templates via phpld admin menu.

And there you have it, the phpld link directory should be up and running, looking exactly as it did on your old host/server, with all the links, featured links, partner links, etc. intact. As usual, if you have any questions let me know in the comments below.

Cisco Cius Android Pad. The New Ipad Killer?

Not sure about the name, but having just bought my first Android phone, this webchicklet is certainly intrigued by Cisco’s entry into the iPad killing arena. Cisco just announced this afternoon, the unveiling of an Android based tablet, the first of its kind, according to the company.

While I am skeptical of the name, I always welcome competition to stop Apple from taking over the world. The market may not like it much, given that CSCO stock was down 3.7% today, but given the large drop in the markets today, I’m sure it’s not related to the launch of this sexy Android tablet.

Cisco’s unveiling was big on fanfare, but lacking on substance. Very little in the way of specs were released on the Cisco Cius, such as the type of processor, and the processor speed. They did say it would weigh in at a lightweight 1.15 pounds, but did not release any size dimensions. There was also no mention of Wifi and 3G (or 4G) versions like the Apple iPad. All Cisco said was that “Cisco Cius will offer HD video streaming and real-time video, multi-party conferencing, email, messaging, browsing, and the ability to produce, edit and share content stored locally or centrally in the cloud. So one would have to assume wifi and 3G will be available.

An interesting new Android based tablet is exciting news, but the lack of details has me a little deflated and wanting more. Now we can begin to rumor whether it will be the Verizon or AT&T network this new Cisco Cius runs on. Please Cisco, give us more info.

But seriously, it is a great book well worth the wait.

Pro Android 2 gets you buiding real-world mobile applications using Google’s latest Android SDK in short order(not counting the delivery time). The new edition means it fully covers Android 2, and it offers the rare combination of expert insight and real sample applications that work. I for one can’t learn from reading alone, it’s imperative that I see some working examples.

So, while it takes even longer to get than an HTC Droid Incredible from Verizon, it is an excellent resource for the budding Android developer.

3. Android Wireless Application Development (Paperback)~ Shane Conder, Lauren Darcey

This is a great book that will will get you to the Android marketplace in no time. However, it does not cover Android 2. That being said, I’m sure the author is working on it and it will be updated soon.

Best of all, the book comes with a CD-ROM containing all of the book’s code samples, as well as some open source tools for Android development.

Google Is Not A Relevant Search Engine

Clearly, this Webchicklet has way too much time on my hands on this Saturday morning. I got to wandering the web and came across an old 2008 post about how Google was not a relevant search engine according to it’s own search engine! Back in 2008, Garry Conn wrote about typing the search term “search engine” into google.com. The results back then were astounding, as Google wasn’t even listed in the first few pages of search results! Back then, Google search considered Altavista.com, dogpile.com and ask.com the three most relevant search engines. So I got to thinking…..Google must have rectified this little oversight by now, right?

So, naturally, I opened up the google.com main search page and typed in the term “search engine” to see if they now think they are a relevant search engine. The results made me laugh yet again.

As you can see, strangely, not much has changed. The top three most relevant search engines now are Dogpile, AltaVista, and Bing is now in third place. Google.com is nowhere to be found on the first page. In fact, according to the Google Search Engine, the Google Search Engine is the 20th most relevant search engine! That’s right, google.com is at the bottom of page 2! The results are rather strange, given that DogPile.com is probably one of the worst search engines out there. And Yahoo, supposedly the number two search engine, on number of visitors is listed in 9th place.

If you enter the same search on Yahoo.com, you’ll see Yahoo Search listed number one, google number two, and again, DogPile is in the top three. When you search on Bing.com, you get Dogpile number one again, then wikipedia, and then altavista(is Altavista really still around??) . And interestingly, the ever popular DuckDuckGo.com is the 4th most relevant search engine according to Bing.

I’ve got nothing more to add to this. This is just one of those head scratcher’s that have no right or wrong answers. But clearly, we should all start buying up DogPile stock, as it will be the next Google!
