teklalight.com

Another refurbishment process ended some time back, I just really didn't have much time to post, so putting it up now. My good photographer friend asked me to rebuild her website a while ago (I wrote about this here in details when this happened in my post called Another website you'll see my link on). It now got a new name and of course an absolutely new design: teklalight.com. You may also check it out under the MadeByMe page of this blog.

webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

How to copy website favicon

You may already know that the little icon appearing to the left of a website's page title is called a "favicon". It's an image file that has to be at least 16 x 16 pixels in size (the higher the better resolution of course), has to have the exact name of favicon.ico and be placed in the root folder of your website. There are alternative ways of using it, but this is the default.

Today I'm just going to provide you with a quick trick: would you want to have a look at the favicon of your favourite website to have a closer look as to how it was done or edit it just for fun, all you have to do is to type in the full URL of the website in the address bar of your browser (the place you usually use to type in website names you would like to visit) and add "/favicon.ico" (without the quotes) to it. This will show you the favicon in the upper left hand corner which you can then save to your desktop for example by right-clicking anywhere on the page and choose save image as (or something like this, depending on the browser you are using).

The full URL would then look something like this:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)http://webeno.blogspot.com/favicon.ico
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

New (refurbished) website under the webeno sky - MagicalMusicalEnglish.com

My good friend, Lisa had the wonderful idea to create a school where kids can learn English mostly using music, singing, and play. I recently moved into a new apartment where I was using a wireless router supplied by the internet service provider (ISP), but the flat is pretty big, thus in one of the rooms the signal of the wireless router was very weak. In order to strengthen the signal, I had the idea to use another wireless router in addition to the already existing one. As I brought my own wireless router with me from the previous flat, where it was not supplied by the ISP, I thought this second wireless router should be able to pick up the signal of the first one making the signal stronger in that room.

So, as usual, I went on the internet and looked for help. Quite soon I found out that in order this to happen with my router, I had to upgrade its firmware. Probably most popular wireless router firmware provider is a project called dd-wrt.com. Their firmwares are highly sophisticated with a lot of customization options to fit the needs of the pickiest network designers.

After I have installed the right firmware for my router (click here for more information about installing / flashing your router) and some additional research on their website, I found their page about Linking Routers - you may want to have a look at this page, as you may want to setup your wireless routers in a different way. Cycling through the options, the one that fit my specific needs was the setup called Repeater Bridge. Honestly, it took me some time and lots of tries until I got to the point when it started to work, so if you want to do this too, prepare for a half a day setup time.

Before starting anything, please take some time to understand what a Hard Reset Or 30/30/30 is and make sure that you follow all instructions precisely, otherwise you may brick (break) your router. But don't worry, even if your router is bricked, you still have ways to solve your problem, just follow the guide called Recover From A Bad Flash.

As always, would you have any questions, please feel free to AskMe, I'll do my best to help you out!
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

How to create a (browser) "Back" link

I always wanted to know this, so I hit the internet and searched for it: I wanted to find out how I can create a Back link on my page. This can be very practical for example on a 404 (page cannot be displayed) error page, as this way if visitors came to your website from one of your pages (or any other website) they can easily click your Back link making your page even more user-friendly.

The back link is actually generated by a javascript code snippet that looks like this:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<a href="javascript:history.go(-1)">Go Back to previous page!</a>
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

Edit style of active page of your navigation menu

When building a website, it is crucial that visitors can easily navigate and know as to which page they are currently on. You may solve this by making the title of the page to stand out (like I did on this blog) or, the other way, it is actually recommended to use both if possible, you could style (eg. give a different colour to) the name of the currently visited page in the navigation menu.

To be completely honest, I thought this was only possible using PHP, but it came out styling the active page of your navigation menu can easily be setup in HTML too.

The article that writes this down very clearly is called Pure CSS to display the active page in the navigation. I encourage you to report this to them by filling out this form and they might eventually do it for you: http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=profile_bug. As a workaround, you may choose a different network, that you are ok to keep, then you can remove your old network. If anyone reading this has a solution, please feel free to comment below. I'm however keeping the original post for the sake of history tracking. ***

I might be an exception, but it did disturb me a lot to have the name of a network added under my name in facebook when looking in friend lists, such as my friend's friend list, or when you open the link of the list of people who liked a post... etc. You might just want to get rid of your primary network for other reasons (one of the simplest, not part of it anymore), but to be honest, when I tried to remove this annoying network name from below my name, I did not find a solution up until today.

Not sure how it was before, but today if you have only one network, that one has to be your primary, no matter what. Once you made a network your primary, for some odd reason, you cannot leave that anymore; the 'Leave network' button that was there before you made your network primary simply disappears, even from the code behind apparently.

After some time searching for it, giving up and then just really wanting to find a solution, I finally stumbled upon an excellent post from Varenya Mehta VM that did not address my issue directly but had the solution to my issue in it too. The post addresses Facebook's "You are already a member of this network" Bug, however going through it up until point 6 then applying the javascript solution, I could actually leave my primary network on facebook.

Important note: I could only use the javascript solution (update #2 of the above post) as I do not use Firefox but Chrome instead. This solution only worked for me if adding the javascript into the console of Chrome's Developer Tool (and not in the address line, as the above post suggests).

I know it might not be easy for less technically savvy people to apply the solution, so feel free to AskMe if you have questions, I'm happy to help you out!
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

HTML and PHP includes

I know it's been a long time since I wrote here, but [replace with usual bla-bla], so let me make it up to you guys and give you a nice little hint here.

Usually when I want to build a website quickly and where design or dynamism is not all that important, I use simple HTML instead of PHP as I found it being much quicker to write. However, not being dynamic, a website built in HTML would be very complicated and time consuming to apply any changes to, unless you use a website builder software like Dreamweaver (not linking it, they make enough money already anyway :) and use templates. Thus, to simplify things, you may use includes, meaning you create a set of code, put it into a simple HTML page and then with a short line of code, you simply include it in your pages.

The code is fairly simple, it looks like this:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<!--#include virtual="path to file/include-file.html" -->

Note: it only worked for me using SHTML (simply rename your page to read [page_name].shtml instead of [page_name].html) although I have not seen this being stated in the article I took this information from. As usual, let me disclose my source, a nice article about this that actually also explains the way to handle includes using PHP: How Do I Include One HTML File in Another?

Hope you will find this useful! Look out for more articles from me, I have scheduled some now to keep up the wibe! ;)
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

New simplistic website MadeByMe

My bro's and I had an idea to organize our own mini-festival with the main idea to celebrate our birthdays in the summer months. In order to get to the direct link of a facebook post, you simply have to click the little link that states when it has been posted. It can be found under each post right next to the like and comment links. Of course the way the link is built may vary depending on if it is a post, a picture or a video (or anything else).

To make it easy, I have made a screen shot of an average post on facebook and added a red rectangle around the link:

And this is how the URL looks (where 'nickname' is your facebook nick name and the number at the end is the unique identifier of the post):

webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

Another website you'll see my link on

I just transformed a photographer's PixelPost photoblog into a Wordpress website making sure that the design is kept the same and only the platform would be easier to handle which, according to the client's feedback, worked out very well! This can cause problems (ie. cannot see the count of likes after the button) and as I write my blog in English and the word "like" is pretty much known by the blog readers' community, I decided to keep it in English. The official documentation of Facebook's Like button does mention this, however it seems (at least to date) that the explanation is not very precise or specific to Bloggers, so let me show you what you need to do exactly:

Using the iframe version of the button, this is how the code will look like:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<iframe allowTransparency='true' expr:src='&quot;http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=&quot; + data:post.url + &quot;&amp;layout=button_count&amp;show_faces=false&amp;width=80&amp;action=like&amp;font=arial&amp;colorscheme=light&quot;' frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='border:none; overflow:hidden; width:80px; height:20px; background:transparent'/>

Now to add the the language option, you simply have to insert the code snippet "&amp;locale=en_US" (for English) somewhere after the facebook like button link, so the code would look like this:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<iframe allowTransparency='true' expr:src='&quot;http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=&quot; + data:post.url + &quot;&amp;locale=en_US&amp;layout=button_count&amp;show_faces=false&amp;width=80&amp;action=like&amp;font=arial&amp;colorscheme=light&quot;' frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='border:none; overflow:hidden; width:80px; height:20px; background:transparent'/>
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

Easy countdown timer for your website

I guess I found the easiest countdown timer on the web, namely Andrew Urquhart's DHTML Easy Countdown — v1.53. Google language changing Have you ever travelled to another country with your laptop and realized that the language on Google changes to the local language of your stay? Well, some people (obviously more at Google) think this is a good thing, but me, including maybe a bigger part of the community travelling and using Google, this is of no use or even very annoying. No solution exists to date, but I found a thread that provides a workaround (see below or click here to jump to solution for Google language changing).

2. Google.com redirects to another Google page Another thing, setup this way by Google probably for another reason (explained below), is that when you open Google.com, it will redirect you to the Google page of the country you're staying in, ie. Google.co.uk in case you're in the UK. This is probably due to Google's localization policy to make sure advertisements appear rightly for those who're in the region. The reason however I needed to have Google.com opening every time is A) I never click on ads and B) when I would like to find out what position my blog is for a certain keyword I have to look at Google.com which is used by the bigger part of people searching.

The workaround / solution There's a long thread on Google's Support Forum called 'How can I keep Google from changing my language settings' that discusses both issues. I however didn't find the 'Best Answer' there to answer the question at all, the one I liked the most is 3 posts below the 'Best' by Jimmy Deheeger. He refers to 2 Google Support documents each addressing one of the issues:

1. Google language setting (use this help document in case setting your language on www.google.com > settings > search settings would not solve the problem): Search history and settings: Search preferences aren't sticking

2. Google redirecting to another Google page (I used the 3rd 1st option provided under 'Changing your settings' - more to this below): Trouble connecting: Google.com automatically takes me to another Google site

If you want Firefox (I use version 3.6.8 - download Firefox by clicking here) to keep the direct link to google.com (http://www.google.com/ncr) simply click the drop-down arrow directly to the right from the Google icon in your search box (top right hand corner by default) and choose 'Manage Search Engines...' menu, choose Google, click 'Edit Keyword...' and add the direct link. After you clicked OK, any time you search for something using the search box of Firefox, it will look it up directly in google.com independently from where you're located (click here for more info on Firefox's Search Bar and the "Edit Keyword..." option).

EDITED: I had to delete cookies for another reason which made me be redirected to my local Google search page instead of google.com. I realized that it doesn't matter what you add to 'Keyword' in the Firefox search box as it redirects you anyway. You'll have to use the first option the above help document (#2) provides you with, namely to 'Click the Google.com link on any other domain'. Seems this puts a cookie on your computer and will keep you on the google.com page any time you search (even using the Firefox search box) until you clean your cookies again.
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

Choose the content to display on the different page types in Blogger

It is important to know the exact scope of Blogger page types in order to be able to place different content on selected page types. Following page types exist at Blogger currently:

1. Home page
2. Archive Page
3. Item Page = Post pages
4. Index Page = home page, label page, search page
5. Static Page = Blogger Pages (relatively new in Blogger)

The code would look like this:

a) for include cases (include content by replacing the "content here" text below in case you want to see them appear when the specified page type IS being viewed):
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;[PageTypeID]&quot;'>&#13content here&#13</b:if>

b) for exclude cases (include content by replacing the "content here" text below in case you want to see them appear when the specified page type IS NOT being viewed - all other pagetypes BUT the specified one):
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;[PageTypeID]&quot;'>&#13content here&#13</b:if>

Notice the only difference between the two is the double equal sign (==) in case of includes and the exclamation mark and single equal sign in case of excludes. The [PageTypeID] part will be replaced by the above listed page type according to your needs: archive, item, index, static_page.

In case of the home page the code is slightly different:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<b:if cond='data:blog.url == data:blog.homepageUrl'>&#13content here&#13</b:if>

If you want to know more about this and see some additional tricks, you may want to check out the blog post called Selective Display of Blogger Widgets on homepage, archive, post page, or particular pages.
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

How to recover deleted posts and pages in Blogger

If you understand Blogger's URL structure when editing (creating new) blog posts or pages in Blogger, you'll practically be able to recover any deleted posts or pages. However you'll have to make sure that you have a backup of your posts and pages ('Settings' > 'Basic' tab > 'Export blog') before deleting any of them otherwise you will not be able to locate the deleted post or page in Blogger's database (you'll understand it if you read on).

If you go to 'Posting' > 'Edit Posts' tab and choose a post to edit, you'll see the following displayed in the address bar:

As you can see all blogs at Blogger have their unique IDs (blogID) when they're created which identifies the blog itself in the database. Posts work exactly the same way: they also have a unique ID (postID) and, probably the most important, the same post always keeps the same ID. What I mean is that if once you have created a blog post, it will remain in Blogger's database so if you delete it but know the ID of the post, you can simply replace that part in the URL and you'll be able to start editing thus recovering your blog post.

Pages work exactly the same way with some slight differences in the URL respectively: "post.edit.g" (after http://www.blogger.com/) becomes "page.edit.g" and of course "postID" will be replaced with "pageID". You can easily call this URL by going to 'Posting' > 'Edit Pages' and replace the unique ID of the page you want to recover.

It is important to know that if you deleted your posts/pages and want to recover them from an .xml backup (the one that's created by Blogger when you export the blog), the unique IDs (and the final URLs created out of the title of the post) will change so if you had cross linking between 2 posts it won't work anymore. This is why this way of recovering your posts and pages is so amazing!

Miscellaneous: you can use the above method to have more pages in Blogger than the current limit of 10. To see how, check out soswitcher's post called Blogger - Pages Hack. ;)
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

Facebook Like button added to webeno.blogspot.com

Probably one of the easiest and fastest way to express your appreciation is using the Facebook's Like button. There are 2 ways to set it up: XFBML or iframe. The simple and fast way is iframe that however doesn't leave you much space for customization while you can do a whole lot more with the XFBML version (you'll find an excellent post about how to add a comment field along with the Like button here: Facebook Like button XFBML tutorial).

To setup the iframe version, simply go to Facebook's Like button page, fill in the necessary informaion and insert the code snippet you'll get into your website.

Ways to have the like button automatically added to all your posts without having to go to Facebook every time vary depending on what blogging platform you use. I found a nice and easy post for Blogger called Facebook Like / Recommend Button For Blogger. A full list of Facebook Like button plugins for Wordpress can be found here. If you use any other platform, just search the web with the platform's name and something like "facebook like button". If you can't find it, just AskMe. ;)
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

External link track - a one liner

If you use Google Analytics and would like to track which ones of your external links people click on while checking out your website, all you have to do is to add the 'onClick' attribute to the a (anchor) tag in question.

Here's an example code that you could use:
(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<a href="http://www.example.com/" onClick="javascript: pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/linktrack/001');" target="_blank">Example Dot Com</a>

The '/outgoing/linktrack/001' part can of course be replaced with anything you like.
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

Embed music with dowload.php file

Scenario: you would like to embed a music file (.mp3 in our example) into your website and also want to make sure that when someone clicks the download link the usual open / save as window opens instead of the browser trying to open the file directly with whatever plugin already installed.

My solution: we'll have to break this down into two parts: one will be the embed script and the other one will be the download link.

Step 1 Embed music with IE support

Sometimes a simple embed music script would not be enough as Internet Explorer has its own way to understand it, therefore the script I'm going to provide you with is one that takes this into account too. I used a not too fancy but very descriptive article simply called Embedding Audio

note: you may replace mydomain.com with your domain name and music/01_mymusic.mp3 with the path to and file name of your .mp3 file on your hosting server:

(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<object classid="clsid:02bf25d5-8c17-4b23-bc80-d3488abddc6b" width="510" height="16" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab#version=6,0,2,0"><param name="src" value="http://mydomain.com/music/01_mymusic.mp3" />&#13<param name="autoplay" value="false" />&#13<param name="autostart" value="0" />&#13<param name="pluginspage" value="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/" />&#13<!--[if !IE]> <-->&#13<object type="audio/x-mpeg" data="http://mydomain.com/music/01_mymusic.mp3" width="510" height="16">&#13<param name="src" value="http://mydomain.com/music/01_mymusic.mp3" />&#13<param name="autoplay" value="false" />&#13<param name="autostart" value="0" />&#13<param name="pluginurl" value="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/" />&#13<embed type="video/quicktime" width="510" height="16" autostart="false" loop="false" src="http://mydomain.com/music/01_mymusic.mp3"></embed>&#13</object>&#13<!--> <![endif]-->&#13</object>

Step 2 Download link with download.php file

You'll see an example of a simple but effective way to "call" the little open/save as window when clicking a download link. The forum thread that helped me is called download pdf hyperlink (scroll all the way to the bottom to get the clean version of the code). All I needed to do here is to replace the .pdf with .mp3 and place the download.php file into the folder where my .mp3 files were located on the hosting server (using the same path we refer to in above code):

(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)<?php&#13$filename = $_GET['filename'];&#13if( ! is_file($filename) || $filename[0] == '.' || $filename[0] == '/' )&#13{ die("Bad access attempt.\n"); }&#13$file = explode('.', $filename);&#13if($file[1] != 'mp3')&#13{ die('Could not download selected file.'); }&#13header("Pragma: public");&#13header("Expires: 0");&#13header("Cache-Control: must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0");&#13header("Content-Type: application/force-download");&#13header("Content-Type: application/octet-stream");&#13header("Content-Type: application/download");&#13header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".basename($filename).";");&#13header("Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary");&#13header("Content-Length: ".filesize($filename));&#13readfile("$filename");&#13exit();&#13?>
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

New website 'in the house': widosub.com & v2manufacture.com updated

Was just ready a few days ago with the latest, very simple website i created for an amazing musician and dj, widosub. I created his site with WordPress and used the The WordPress XSPF Player Plugin, a Flash based music player plugin. Go ahead and check it out now: widosub.com.

I also made a recent change to v2manufacture.com: due to the fact that the client wanted to see the website through iPad and iPhone, I had to replace the Flash based simpleviewer script by a Javascript based picture gallery tool. I used the probably simplest and awesomest script called Galleria by Aino. As a backup solution, for those who have difficulties seeing javascript content, I created a separate, simple, html/css based version of the picture gallery - I used a simple CSS photo-album for this replacing the numbers with thumbnail pictures (click the "Can't see the pictures? Try this!" link to see it in action). Go ahead and check out v2manufacture.com to see how I used the Galleria and CSS photo-album codes.
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

The easiest way to scale your picture or image in html - a one liner

The easiest way to scale your picture or image in html - a one linerSuppose you have a column on the side or sidebar where you want to put images with different sizes however also making sure that their widths keep the same distance from the sides of the columns, you could simply only set the width of the img tag (of course, dpending on you layout, you could use the height only):

(click in the box to highlight the code for copy)&#13<img src="image.jpg" width="10em" / >
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

CSS Equal Height Columns

While looking for a solution for the thread called "background repeat of the left cotainer based on middle container" on the WebMasterWorld Forum I automatically thought of using tables. It is definitely the easiest but its browser support is not the best (see Seven Reasons to go Table Free). So digging a bit further first I found the perfect keyword to look for in a search engine: Equal Height Columns.

Most of the posts and articles talk about using tables, JavaScript or the "Faux Columns" solution, although probably the cleverest is Using Separate Background Color <div> elements for the background of each column - have to say, it's a bit complicated though, not so easy to grasp the meaning of it. The post about Four Methods to Create Equal Height Columns explains all options very clearly also listing the advantages and disadvantages of each.

I think the best of all however is described in the blog post Equal Height Columns using CSS - again, after the tables, JavaScript and the "Faux Columns" method it explains "Another Way" that is extremely simple: adding overflow: hidden, padding-bottom: 2000px and margin-bottom: -2000px, case closed! :)
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

'Marquee or not marquee' or 'How to scroll text in HTML?'

The question could also be: should marquee be used as an element or as a css property?

Before I would elaborate on that, let me just give an example to the ones who have no idea what marquee means. This is basically an element or css property (see below which one is which) that allows you to make a simple text (or even image) scroll in a specified direction with a specified speed.

Example (if the below text doesn't scroll, your browser doesn't support the marquee element):

<marquee>Scrolling Text</marquee>

The document about HTML Marquee Code details the usage of the marquee element, however this seems to be listed now as one of the Obsolete features of HTML5 and should not be used. Some even go further and say Don't Blink, Don't Marquee! This article basically says that it doesn't look professional, however there are cases where it's can be very practical, like on this website (check out the top line with available devices for sale).

The document How to Fly Text in DHTML provides 2 ways: one is the above example with the marquee element that is not supported by W3 and another one which is actually a javascript snippet.

For the future, it seems CSS3 will provide a solution as there's a recommendation ready on W3's table called CSS Marquee Module Level 3. The document however clearly states that it "...is a draft document and may be updated, replaced or obsoleted by other documents at any time."
webeno - webdesign, webhosting - nothing is impossible and everything is manageable!

webeno.blogspot.com got below 2 M on Alexa Ranking

Dear beloved readers!

Today webeno.blogspot.com got below 2 million in the worldwise website ranking of Alexa.
