We are quietly beta testing what will become an awesome new tool for WebEx users. It allows you to leverage the WebEx network for your benefit. You can now post your content on the WebEx.com site.

We have another tool that will help you market your WebEx recordings: it's the WebEx Widget. With this little marquee, you can load the recordings you want to feature - along with a custom image - and add this to your web page. We have one here on the WebEx blog (see the upper left). It's pretty darn cool.

Here's a quick step-by-step for trying out these new tools:

1. Load your WebEx recordings on Together@WebEx.
Note the URL for each one so you can easily find them (it takes about 24 hours for the search engine to populate so you'll need to grab the URLs for the short term). We are in early beta so right now, what you post can't be edited. That should change very shortly.

2. Share your links with others.
Posts can be rated and shared so do that! Use the tools to drive traffic to your recording.

3. Be creative. Promote your business!
Here's a great first recording to share. Pick a presentation you've done before, jump on WebEx and record yourself giving it. We find a standalone preso of 10 minutes or less is about right unless you have a really compelling preso. You can load your slides into the WebEx and be sure to use your telephone to call in for the best audio quality. We have a lot of tips in this blog.

Our only caveat: please keep the content appropriate.
This site is open to the general public. Please post content that you would share with your grandmother and your child. Anything you post is available via our search engine, so only post information you want to share with everyone.

Remember, this is a beta and you are absolutely helping us test this. We will be rolling out incremental improvements in the days and weeks to come. If you have comments or feedback, drop us a note via our Facebook page. We'd love to hear from you.

Difficult Conversations at Work: When Distance is an Issue

Seth Godin posted a pithy, thoughtful blog about Difficult Conversations at Work. His advice:

When the outcome of a conversation is in doubt, don't do it by email...show up in person if you can. The synchronicity of face to face conversation gives you the chance to change your tone midstream... [read more].

He makes an extremely valid point.

But what do you do when you can't meet in person? An online meeting can solve the problem.

With WebEx, you can use web cams to see everyone in your meeting. Our Active Speaker feature dynamically switches the camera view to show who is talking at any point in time. It's the next best thing to having an in-person conversation.

Ready to jump in? Here are a few quick tips:

Do make sure you like what you see. Many people are web-cam-shy. Check out your own image before you broadcast to make sure you feel comfortable.

Do have the camera near eye-level. You will naturally look at the screen to see everyone else, so having your camera near where you are looking with add to the "natural conversation" feel.

Slow down. It's still a video conference and the telephony part takes a second to switch. So leave a little space for transitions and don't be afraid of pauses.

Consider recording the meeting. If you want to focus on face time and not take a lot of notes, you can record the meeting and take notes later during a reply.

Solution:

Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) is currently not supported by WebEx. Lion is tentatively slated to be supported in WBS 27.28.2 (SP28 EP2). The release date for SP28 EP2 is tentatively set for the end of August 2011.

WebEx will also announce official support in FR29 (ETA 9/30).

I live more than 100 miles away from my finance guy, er um, investment advisor.

We meet about twice a year where he reviews my investments and helps me plan for my child's college years, my retirement and even my mom's golden years since I am on the hook to make sure they stay "golden."

But I get frustrated that we have been meeting mostly via phone call. I have to keep up with email attachments he's sent. It's confusing enough to me already; having to figure out what he's looking at adds to the challenge.

So this time, I blew his mind.

I insisted on using WebEx for an online meeting. I made him dial in and share his desktop so he could show me what I should be looking at! He could actually point to the meaningful parts of the graphical story and then we used webcams so we could see each other at the end of the video conference!

Daily Finance has a great article today on "Making a Financial Comeback After a Setback" and one of their points is to get financial help. The good news: you don't have to be limited to those around you. I got many recommendations before I found the very wise John. If being geographically close had been a requirement, we'd never be in business together.

Thankfully, tools like WebEx make the distance a non-issue. If you haven't tried it, jump in. You can use the free trial to have as many meetings as you like.
