Honors and Awards

George Washington Carver was bestowed an honorary doctorate from Simpson College in 1928. He was an honorary member of the Royal Society of Arts in London, England. In 1923, he received the Spingarn Medal given every year by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 1939, he received the Roosevelt Medal for restoring southern agriculture. On July 14, 1943, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt honored Carver with a national monument dedicated to his accomplishments. The area of Carver's childhood near Diamond Grove, Missouri preserved as a park, this park was the first designated national monument to an African American in the United States.

A young girl believed to be between the ages of six and eight came to America aboard a slave ship in 1761. This young girl, Phillis Wheatley, was believed to have come from Ethiopia or Senegal, West Africa, and left a substantial mark on American history. She was to overcome the inhumane institution of slavery to become one of this country's greatest poets and the first black American woman to publish a book.

Luckily for Phillis Wheatley she was purchased by John Wheatley, a wealthy merchant tailor, for his wife Susannah. Once in the Wheatley home, Phillis was treated as a daughter and assigned chores relative to the status of a lady. Phillis exhibited an astounding ability to learn and in just sixteen months she mastered the English language. At the age of 14, she began to write poetry and quickly gained the attention of the most distinguished Bostonians.

In 1770, only nine years after her arrival to this country, she published her poem, "On the Death of the Rev. Mr. George Whitefield", which gained the attention of the Countess of Huntington in England. Three years later, Phillis visited England and before she left, the Countess arranged to have a volume of her poems published. In 1773, the first book of poems by an American black woman was published, Poems on Various Subjects, Religions and Moral.

In 1774, shortly after this historic occasion, her mistress, Mrs. Susannah Wheatley died. Four years later, after the death of her master, Mr. Wheatley, Phillis became a free woman, leading to hard times and poverty. One month after the death of John Wheatley, she married John Peters. This marriage did not improve Phillis' circumstances and she was forced to work as a servant. She bore three children. All three died shortly after birth, and Phillis herself died within a few hours of her third delivery on December 5, 1784.

Thyroid Awareness Month

Cynthia Augustin founder of "Webjunkie09Network" shares her story on "Thyroid."

I was told in 1996 I had an under active thyroid nodule in my neck. Surgery was performed and a few nodules were removed. My TSH at that time was 1.0 and it should be between (0.2 - 5.5). As years passed and I progressed on my thyroid medication later the nodules grew back. December 15, 2005 my thyroid was removed and after the surgery, I was told that my left vocal cord was paralyzed and I had to take a medicine called Levothroid 112 MCG daily. I currently speak with a raspy voice that was not there prior the second surgery. I was told by my surgeon that I had the largest thyroid that was ever taken out at Kaiser Hospital Stockton California.

"I was so afraid to get the results and surgery but now that it's done, I feel great and very blessed to be here to share my story."

My advise to you is to get your thyroids checked by a specialist if you are gaining or loosing weight and feeling fatigue. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TODAY.

How are thyroid nodules diagnosed?
Most people don’t find thyroid nodules on their own, because the nodules aren't easy to feel and don’t usually cause symptoms. Your doctor may have found a nodule on your thyroid when you were having a CT Scan or ultrasound for other reasons. Your doctor will do a physical exam and will ask you if you have symptoms or any changes in how you've been feeling.
You may have tests to see how well your thyroid is working and to make sure the nodule is not cancer. Possible tests include:

A blood test to check the level of thyroid hormone in your body.
A thyroid scan, which uses radioactive material and a camera to see how well your thyroid gland is working. This is done if the level of thyroid hormone is high.
Fine needle to check the nodule for cancer. The small amount of material taken from the nodule is examined under a microscope for the presence of cancer cells.
Thyroid ultrasound, to see the number and size of nodules or to locate the nodule for fine-needle aspiration.

How are they treated?
If your nodule is not cancer (benign) and is not causing problems, your doctor will watch your nodule closely for any changes. But if the nodule is large or causing problems with swallowing or breathing, you'll need surgery to remove the nodule.

If your thyroid nodule is causing hyperthyroidism, your doctor may recommend a dose of radioactive iodine, which usually comes in a liquid that you swallow. Or your doctor may have you take medicine (pills) to slow down the hormone production. In some cases, surgery may be done to remove an overactive thyroid nodule.

If your nodule is cancer (malignant), you'll need surgery to remove the nodule. You may also need treatment with radioactive iodine to destroy any leftover cancer cells. After surgery, you may need to take thyroid medicine for the rest of your life.

Surgery

Surgery is the best treatment for thyroid nodules that are:

Cancerous (malignant).
Suspected to be cancerous.
Noncancerous (benign) but large enough to cause problems with breathing or swallowing. People who develop thyroid nodules after receiving radiation treatment to the head, neck, or chest are more likely to need surgery because their risk for developing thyroid cancer is greater. But most nodules in people who have had radiation therapy are not cancerous.

Skylier A. Blanchard owner/CEO for the Skylier Wear Collection Apparel Company begin to developed back in 1992 while working for a an apparel company call the Lilli Ann Corp. What inspired Skylier were the multi task operation and the difference departments of a fashion apparel company. Skylier first position was to add the sewing ticket everyday (called pick ticket) pick ticket is how the company kept track of how many pieces the sewer sewed per day. At the end of the week all the ticket were added and included with their hourly pay which was minimum wage the two where added together. This is how the sewers where paid.

Skylier next position was in sales an order entry specialist. This position added all the orders that came in from the rep and buyers daily and weekly.This position was a great position because it taught her how to recognize the processing of invoices and she save the company a million dollars processing orders is very important because if there not process in correctly the buyer can cancel the order.The fact of the matter is through this company see was allow to see an apparel company in full operation. She had a company to help her to develop her skills.

Skylier possess the natural skill s to understand how each department fulfill each task and goals. A natural artist skylier saves time and money by creating most of her work. The skylier wear apparel company is based on these same guidelines of past companies. Which offer a dream in fashion and future jobs? We all know without new companies to provide opportunity we fall into a recession which can create chaos in community and cities. Skylier was born in Oakland but raised in Orange, Texas. She has been residing in Oakland for 25 years. Skylier believe that her work will now gains some ground for operation. After spending several years designing, sewing, and creating fashions for herself, her children and family members she was invited to participate in a local fashion show. This led to several art competitions and the opportunity to be paid for the fashions she had created. Jerri's fashions were labeled "Wearable Textile Art".

Jerri was honored to win first place in the Nor Cal Art Competition in the field of 3 dimensional art. She is a member of the National League of American Pen Women. Santa Clara County Branch. Jerri feels that the inspirational membership has been very instrumental in helping to achieve her artistic talents.

Renita Verner shares her story with Cynthia Augustin

Who is Renita Verner?

She is an accomplished financial aid professional helping student’s secure financial aid assistance for over 25 years. She begin her career with Coast Community College School district in Orange County, CA. She accepted a position as a Financial Aid Technician and began to work her way to the top. Determined to manage her career in a direction that would allow her to balance family she accepted a position as a Financial Aid Coordinator working for TUI University where she propelled her way to Director of Financial Aid coupled with Default Prevention Manager. She is truly one of the best in the industry.

Renita enjoys writing poetry. She wrote her first poem at age 13 and remembers sitting in her room writing several poems a week. In 1991 she had two poems published in “The National Library of Poetry” (Distance and Recognize) this was an exciting time for her as she continued to journal her poetry. In June 2010 she decided to display her talent on a blog called http://www.thepoetrydiner.blogspot.com/. Her unique contribution to poetry delivers inspiring and motivational poetry that keeps you coming back for more. She has thousands of viewers and is currently working on a manuscript.

Married and enjoying life with her husband and son is another journey of discovery for Renita. Their son was diagnosed with Autism at age 3 high functioning with high hopes and happy is how she describes her son. She is a woman on the move for their son. Melba Moore shares her story with Cynthia Augustin

Ms. Moore is working on an autobiography with professor and former New York Times writer Mel Watkins detailing all of her achievements over the span of her career. She is also in the studio working on a new album which will be released on her new label A'Moore Entertainment, which she shares with her daughter Charli Huggins . The album is being produced by Rahni Song and Dominic McFadden, son of the late Gene McFadden of McFadden and Whitehead . It is scheduled to be released in early 2011.

Melba Moore was destined to be a star! Hailing from a musical family, Ms. Moore graduated from the famed Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey. At the encouragement of her parents, she went on to pursue music education at Montclair State University, but her inner voice told her she had to see if she could make it as a performer. Ms. Moore’s stepfather, pianist Clement Moorman, introduced her to several agents which eventually landed her a role in the cult classic musical HAIR. It was in HAIR that Ms. Moore became the first African-American woman to replace a white actress, who happened to be the acclaimed Diane Keaton, in a lead role on Broadway. A year and a half later, she starred in PURLIE, which earned her a TONY Award for her portrayal as “Lutiebelle.” Ms. Moore later appeared alongside the iconic Eartha Kitt as “Marsinah” in the musical TIMBUKTU!

Although Ms. Moore enjoyed working on Broadway, she didn’t want to forget about her first love…music. Deciding to focus more on her recording career, she made her recording debut on Mercury Records with I Am Love, followed by Look What You’re Doing To The Man. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Best New Artist.’ During this time, television shows (including her own variety show for CBS), numerous Grammy nominations and recordings followed. Ms. Moore was a regular on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson as well as The Flip Wilson Show. She scored a string of Billboard Charted hits with songs like “This Is It” and “You Stepped Into My Life”. Ms. Moore was the first female pop artist to do a non operatic solo concert at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House.

Ms. Moore continued to enjoy great success musically with such chart topping songs as “Love’s Comin’ At Ya,” “Keepin’ My Lover Satisfied,” “Living For Your Love,” “Read My Lips,” which she received a Grammy nomination for ‘ Best Female Rock Vocal’. She had two Billboard #1 hit singles for “Falling” and “A Little Bit More,” a duet with Freddie Jackson.

Ms. Moore later released Soul Exposed which featured a stellar version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” otherwise known as the Negro National Anthem. It featured such artists as Freddie Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Jeffrey Osborne, Lou Gossett Jr., Bobby Brown, Anita Baker, and Stephanie Mills. During this period Ms. Moore worked hard on her philanthropy. One of her major accomplishments was being instrumental in having “Lift Every Voice and Sing” inducted in the United States Library of Congress as the official Negro National Anthem. She worked strongly with Dr. Dorothy I. Height and the National Council of Negro Women as their national membership chairwoman. She also worked with Dr. C. Delores Tucker and the National Congress of Black Women. Ms. Moore also had a deep passion for children, especially those who were abandoned, abused, and born with AIDS and addicted to crack. She gave her time working with Hale House and also founded her own organization, The Melba Moore Foundation for Children.

Ms. Moore later returned to Broadway in the lead role of ‘Fantine’ in the musical Les Miserables. She became the first Black actress to step into that role in the acclaimed musical. More recently, she starred with Beyonce and Cuba Gooding Jr. in the motion picture “The Fighting Temptations”.

The Founder of the Women News Bureau shares her story with Cynthia Augustin

Who is Jerrilynn Thomas?

Fresh out of college and newly married, I discovered that I was pregnant with twins in 1988. I was living in a new state with no family to lean on. The news constantly had stories of day care providers and babysitters who were neglecting and abusing children. I used my nine months wisely by doing research and taking stock of my skills and interests to determine what the best home-based business would be for me.

Since high school, I was fascinated by PR and I loved writing. My college course in PR only reinforced my Love for it. Being able to get free advertising in newspapers and on TV was simply ingenious to me. I decided that the perfect business for me was writing business profiles for new female entrepreneurs that they could send to the media as well as include in their brochures and newsletters. I selected mompreneurs as my specialty since I had an affinity for women who wanted to fulfill their dream of starting their own business so they could afford to quit their jobs and be at home with their children.

I sent a PSA to 104.7 in Atlanta to draw attention to the fact that women who wanted to jump into the entrepreneurial arena so they could afford to stay home with their children could use their job skills to start the perfect home-based business. Two weeks later I was invited to do a radio interview to share tips with aspiring mompreneurs. The interview generated over 400 calls and tied up my voice mail for weeks.

I had prospective clients who were ready to hire me. I quickly came up with a business name, Mothers INC, and started servicing clients. I created a mompreneur support group to convert prospects into paying clients. I parlayed the radio interview into a newspaper interview by sharing my story with the editor of the Clayton News Daily about how I started my business for less than $10 by simply purchasing nice stationary and a stamp so I could send an impressive PSA which landed me dozens of clients. I used the newspaper interview to get a TV interview on a local station.

A couple of years later I decided that I want to branch into a broader female audience so I morphed Mothers INC into Savvy Female Entrepreneur by giving a women’s business conference to make a big splash. Savvy Female Entrepreneur distributed women’s business profiles exclusively via fax. Women paid to have their profiles and news included. When one of my clients suggested that I use email to distribute the profiles, I blew her off. It was the early 90’s and I was clueless about the power of email. I continued for about a year using the fax platform until I grew tired of fax errors and other pitfalls. I took a short break to do research and learn about the Internet.

It was a fantastic learning experience that dramatically changed my life. I was exposed to business women around the globe via bulletin boards and discussion lists that were interested in using my services to reach other entrepreneurial minded women. I simplified my business name by becoming Jerrilynn B. Thomas Public Relations. I learned HTML and created my own web site. It was empowering.

It laid the foundation for several more name changes and modifications (women’s business network, news bureau, magazine, and women’s chamber) to keep up with the ever changing Internet. Seven years as the founder of an online women’s chamber, International Virtual Women’s Chamber of Commerce, (a story in itself) prepared me for the social networking evolution. I was able to promote women owned businesses while disseminating their knowledge so that we all increased our online business savvy. Social networking sites and the recession changed the way women distributed their news and networked online. I had to either morph or close my doors.

Women were complaining about losing clients and not having enough money to continue marketing and advertising. I decided to use their lack of funds and struggle to get new clients to my advantage. I transformed the women’s chamber into Marketing 2 Women International to help women share the cost of marketing and advertising to grow their female client base. It’s an educational process that is beginning to pay off tenfold for me. I learned the hard way that you can’t just tell someone that they need to change their solo marketing habits to keep their pipelines full. You have to show them how to do it.

The name of my business might have changed several times over the years but my commitment to promoting women and helping them make valuable connections has never changed. I learned that you can’t stand still on the Internet as well as offline. You have to keep morphing to ensure your business remains relevant but stick to your core business values.

My newest project is taking me back to my PR / news roots with the launch of the Women’s News Bureau (http://womenpartner.org). The news site showcases hyper-local content (local news at the community level) around business women in key metropolitan areas in Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Australia. It provides companies with the business intelligence they need to position their niche marketing message in front of the women in business market on a metro by metro basis. I am issuing a call to action to business women around the globe to mobilize to partner to shine the spotlight on their local women in business market to chronicle the role business women are playing in helping the economy recovery by becoming PR Power Broker Members – community publicists/connectors.

World Trade Center Survivor shares her story with Cynthia Augustin.

WHO IS NICOLE B. SIMPSON

Facing death almost always forces an individual to assess what is really important in life. My story is no different. My name is Nicole B. Simpson and I am a World Trade Center survivor. My life was totally fulfilled and I was achieving the American dream on September 10, 2001. But the next day changed everything for my family and me. I represent the typical family - a wife and mother of two children. We were a two income family living in a nice community attempting to increase our quality of life. Then disaster hit us all.

I worked on the 73rd floor in Tower II and I was in the building early Tuesday morning when Tower I was hit. Initially I did not panic and suggested my team continue working because what was occurring in Tower I had little or no affect on us. That was until I walked to the window and saw burning paper similar to confetti at a NY Yankees Parade. I knew we had to get out of the building. Truthfully speaking, it was divine intervention that prompted me to move.

I gathered my team and began to walk down the steps comforted by the announcement made over and over again through the public announcement system that said our tower was secure and we did not have to evacuate the building. That announcement convinced me to go back upstairs to the 73rd floor although God told me to leave. When I arrived on the 44th floor, I stepped onto the elevator. The Spirit of the Lord spoke once again telling me to stay. I immediately got off the elevator and allowed the doors to close without me or my team.

Approximately 30 seconds later, Tower II was hit and the elevators came crashing down causing fireball explosions to burn people who were standing along the elevator path. But the door that I was standing in front of did not open. I was divinely protected. Moments later I felt a release to move toward the stairs again to attempt evacuation. I ultimately left the building with instructions not to look back lest I shall surely die. That day changed the course of my life forever.

Although our company had relocated to another location (Madison Square Garden), I could not fathom returning to New York. On the first day, there was a bomb scare at that location and although I was not there, I could not endure the pressure of another attack. I had already lost everything. In the immediate aftermath, I was so grateful to be alive. I thought with my experience and expertise, I would be capable of rebounding. I didn’t consider sleepless nights, physical pain, flashbacks and severe depression in the equation. Those emotions coupled with my fear of returning to New York City placed me on a life course I had not considered

My attempts to rebuild a business in the uncertain economy left me financially vulnerable. Although I had accumulated savings, without a consistent income, my family endured serious financial hardship after one year. I had to face the pressure of moving on, no income and guilt because of my survival. To make matters worse, physically, I began to deal with uneven breathing, lack of sleep and constant nightmares. I went to a counselor but I couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt and anger. My life was fine-why me, why me? I even thought about the fact that my family wouldn’t suffer financially had I not survived. Here I was planning for everyone else’s future but after one year, our family was in turmoil.

I floundered in my field until I hit rock bottom in 2007. A year filled with disappointment and pain because I could not recover physically, mentally and financially. The nightmares were worse each year and my breathing was difficult. I felt as if I carried a heavy weight on my chest as an accessory and finally, I reached the point of no return. A decision had to be made. Was I going to continue to allow September 11th 2001 to defeat me or would I make every attempt to find myself again?

Why am I sharing this with you? As we approach the ten year anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11/01, as a survivor, I have watched people dissect conspiracy theories, I have seen the media rehash the day over and over again preventing us who were directly affected from healing. I have watched this national tragedy become more about politics and less about the people. But what was most distressing is that the survivors have been neglected and left to fend for themselves.

For years, people who were in the building suffered in silence. Significant emphasis has been placed on the families of the survivors and the first responders who risked their lives to save people like me. But does the fact that I did not lose my life justify the fact that opportunity was stolen from me.

I made a decision. In 2008, I chose to live. I decided I would no longer be silent. I would not allow 9/11 to defeat me and I would no longer participate in the category of the walking dead. I would no longer allow trauma and catastrophic events to steal my future because I was in the middle of America’s worst terrorist attack. It didn’t happen overnight. It began with a speech I gave titled Dare 2 Dream. While preparing the speech, I began to dream again. I decided to speak to people who suffered from catastrophic and traumatic events to encourage them to not allow their situations to define their future. In encouraging others, a spark was ignited in me. Today I still suffer from bouts of depression, anxiety and stress but I simply continue to dream new dreams.

I chose to fight. These last few years, I have spent my time interviewing other survivors. I have shared their story and I have researched information that will benefit us all physically, mentally and financially. I help others gain access to information and resources we have not been privileged to in the past. God has not forgotten about us. My life was spared so that I can help others recover from catastrophic events in their own lives.

This year has brought about significant change. People are tired of war, they are hurting economically and they want to move forward in life. The capture of Osama Bin Ladin who was the face of terrorism added to the healing process for the country and the Zadroga Act signed into law provides opportunity for people to recover what was stolen. So as we reflect on this last decade, for the first time I can truly say that perhaps this year is the year survivors were able to pick up the pieces of their lives and move forward in an effort to find peace.
