Vor allem für Eltern und Kinder entsteht dabei eine besondere Situation, da den Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten einer „gemischten“ religiösen, kulturellen Identität formal Grenzen gesetzt sind: Im Judentum gilt traditionell das Gesetz der Matrilinearität, d.h. jüdisch ist, wer eine jüdische Mutter hat – oder wer konvertiert. In diesem Spannungsfeld erleben und gestalten teiljüdische Paare, Familien und ihre (erwachsenen) Kinder in unterschiedlicher Form tagtäglich ihre „gemischte“ Identität – in ihrem persönlichen Umfeld, sowie in ihren gesellschaftlichen und nationalstaatlichen Kontexten. Intensive Forschung hierzu kommt vor allem aus den USA, zunehmend jedoch auch aus Europa. In der deutschsprachigen Wissenschaft findet das Thema trotz seiner gesellschaftlichen Relevanz (noch) nicht die entsprechende Beachtung. Die Tagung setzt sich daher zum Ziel, auf dieses Feld aufmerksam zu machen und mit Hilfe der Forschungsarbeiten internationaler WissenschaftlerInnen neue Perspektiven zu eröffnen. Ein Schwerpunkt der Tagung sind Familien mit jüdischem Vater, wobei sich die Auseinandersetzung nicht auf diese beschränkt. Angesprochen ist ein breites Publikum: Für Forschende wie Betroffene werden Möglichkeiten zu Austausch, Vernetzung und zum gemeinsamen Entwickeln von Handlungsstrategien angeboten.

Das Prinzip Aufklärung fußt auf dem Postulat einer einheitlichen, universalen Vernunft. Historische Versuche seiner Umsetzung machen jedoch sichtbar, dass die dem Postulat entspringenden, von Individuen oder Gruppen erhobenen Ansprüche immer wieder verletzt werden: Gesellschaftliche Exklusionsmechanismen entlang der Kategorien Religion, Gender, Rasse, Ethnie und Klasse scheinen die Korrelate der aufklärerischen Praxis zu sein. Ziel des Kolloquiums ist es, das Verhältnis von Majorität und Minoritäten (bzw. minorisierten Gruppen) im gesellschaftlichen Spannungsfeld zu untersuchen und zu prüfen, ob und wie sich kollektive Akteure der Rhetorik, Programmatik und Praxis der Aufklärung bedienen, um bestehende Macht- und Ordnungsgefüge zu legitimieren oder neu zu definieren. Ein Paradebeispiel einer solchen Revision stellt die jüdische Aufklärung dar. Als Minoritätsaufklärung war sie nicht nur nach innen gerichtet, sondern stellte neben dem eigenen auch den gesamtgesellschaftlichen Status Quo in Frage. Im Kontext der genannten Problematik bietet das interdisziplinäre Kolloquium Raum und Zeit für die Diskussion folgender und sich anschließender Fragen: Welche Eigenschaften lassen sich für die jüdische Aufklärung und andere Minoritäten-Bewegungen ? ausgehend vom 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart ? feststellen? Welche gesellschaftlichen Inklusions- und Exklusionsmechanismen sind im Zeichen der Aufklärung zu beobachten? Und wie werden Identitäten dabei verhandelt?

Wir begrüßen Themenvorschläge aus den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften, die Aufklärung als geschichtliches und/oder systematisches Phänomen in den Blick nehmen und aus theoretischer Perspektive oder anhand von Fallbeispielen analysieren. Vorträge können auf Deutsch oder Englisch gehalten werden und sollen die Dauer von 30 Minuten nicht überschreiten. Bewerbungen erbitten wir per E-Mail bis zum 14. CfP: Between Universalism and Particularistic Claims:
Enlightenment in the Context of Social Tension

Interdisciplinary Colloquium for PhD Candidates and Post-Docs

Jena University, May 6-8, 2012

Enlightenment is based on the assumption of universal reason. Put into practice however, many historical examples give proof of the violation of claims made by individuals as well as collectives: Societal exclusion along such categories as religion, gender, race, ethnicity, and class seems to correlate with the practice of enlightenment. The colloquium aims at understanding the relation between majority and minorities (or ?minorized? groups) in order to find out if and how collective agents make use of enlightenment ? its rhetoric, programmatic approach, and practice ? to legitimize or redefine existing power structures. The Jewish Enlightenment stands out as a prime example of such a revision. As an enlightenment of a minority it did not only tackle communal challenges but questioned society as a whole. Against the backdrop of these issues, the interdisciplinary colloquium invites participants to discuss the following and further questions: What are the characteristics of the Jewish Enlightenment and other minority movements of the 18th century until today? How does enlightenment foster both social inclusion and exclusion? How are identities being constructed?

We invite both theoretical and empirical contributions from scholars across the humanities and social sciences that address enlightenment as a historical and/or systematic phenomenon. Presentations are limited to 30 minutes and can be held in German or English. Please submit your proposal (ca. 500-700 words) and curriculum vitae in a single email to aufklaerung_2012@uni-jena.de by November 14, 2011. The organizers also intend to publish a volume of select colloquium papers. Keynote speakers will be announced soon.
