This year marks the 30th anniversary of Microsoft Hardware, the group within the company that produces mice, keyboards, webcams and headsets.

To celebrate, the company has a timeline with a history of its timeline of its mice and other hardware over the years.

Complex Malware Threat 'Flame' Discovered

Russian security firm Kaspersky Labs told the BBC they believed the malware, known as Flame, had been operating since August 2010.

The company said it believed the attack was state-sponsored, but could not be sure of its exact origins.

They described Flame as "one of the most complex threats ever discovered".

This threat appears not to cause physical damage, but to collect huge amounts of sensitive information, said Kaspersky's chief malware expert Vitaly Kamluk.

SAP to Buy Ariba For $4.5B For The Cloud

Business software maker SAP AG on Tuesday said it will buy Ariba Inc., which makes Web-based software that connects suppliers and buyers online, for about $4.51 billion.

The deal continues Germany-based SAP's rivalry with database maker Oracle Corp. Both companies are buying up smaller ones that, like Ariba, provide software that's hosted on remote servers, in the so-called "cloud." Cloud-based applications remove the need for businesses to install and run software in-house.

CIOs Need More Cloud Choices

CIOs should welcome more competition in the cloud and can benefit from the prospect that Google and Microsoft are building cloud computing platforms for businesses. GigaOm blogger Barb Darrow, who wrote that vendor newcomers to the cloud are trying to save their own market share, asked rhetorically: "how many clouds do we need?" Answer: however many clouds it takes to keep Amazon Web Services honest.

Amazon has a huge lead in offering cloud infrastructure after earlier efforts such as Google App Engine and Microsoft Windows Azure failed to put a dent in the incumbent's market share.

Microsoft Quietly Launches Social Network ‎

In the wake of the IPO of social-networking giant Facebook, Microsoft has quietly launched So.cl, its own social networking foray.

However, So.cl isn't designed to be a Facebook challenger. The project, the details of which leaked out last year, is designed to give students the ability to network with their peers to share information.

"So.cl (pronounced 'social') combines search and social networking for the purpose of learning and is the latest experiment from FUSE Labs," Microsoft said in a description of the app. Users log in to the network with their Facebook or Windows Live accounts. Once logged in, users are presented with a variety of suggested topics of interest.

NetSuite Offers Software for Mobile and Tablets

The software, which will be delivered to customers over the Internet, includes components for managing e-commerce merchandising and loyalty programs and can be used on tablets, including Apple Inc.'s iPad, the San Mateo, California-based company said in a statement.

"The devices workers are using now and expect their companies to support are myriad," said Chief Executive Officer Zach Nelson in an interview, who will be demonstrating the new product, named SuiteCommerce, during a speech at the company's annual customer conference in San Francisco today.

The ability to rent computing and storage capacity as needs arise, as well as applications that can be used to manage sales accounts, deploy field technicians, or just about any other function, gives CIOs the ability to help their organizations seize new market opportunities without making huge up-front investments. Greg Buoncontri, CIO of Pitney Bowes, is using cloud-based systems to insulate the company from a recessionary environment he saw looming in Europe. The systems are intended to lower costs while putting the company in the position to move quickly when the opportunity presents itself. "For a period of protracted lower growth, you want to make sure your processes are streamlined," he told CIO Journal in an interview Thursday.

Google Infringed Java Copyrights in Android

A jury has found that Google infringed Oracle's Java copyrights in Android but could not decide unanimously if the the infringement was protected by "fair use."

The jury's verdict, delivered Monday after a week of deliberation, is a partial victory for Oracle in its lawsuit against Google, but Oracle will have to wait longer -- possibly for a retrial -- to see whether Google will escape liability with its claim of fair use.

Yahoo CEO Embellished Computer-Science Degree

Yahoo! Inc. is under pressure from Third Point LLC, one of its largest investors, to dismiss Chief Executive Officer Scott Thompson after his academic computer science credentials were misrepresented.

Third Point, which is fighting for representation on Yahoo’s board amid concern the company is being poorly managed, said Yahoo should “terminate Mr. Thompson for cause immediately.”
