Following on from the Custom Domains post, I've tried it out as a community blog, and it is so easy to set up. It has one major advantage over sftp publishing (apart from the free hosting!), it uses the latest Blogger functionality, so all the post urls and labels can be part of your template. Yes, Anon. Transferring the blog to my website has proved a good move. There's quite a bit of work to do, redoing all the template design the way I like it, but that's good practice, and you can start a new (temporary) blog on which to try things out.

P.S. That really didn't work. What did work was to start a new blog, do every conceivable experiment, then transfer the results to the blogs that matter. Then delete the experimental blog.

Anon, As you can't host WordPress (since your host doesn't support a database) you can probably use beta Blogger and ftp the blog into your site.
