Search Engine Optimization/Marketing. The never ending pursuit of getting on that first page of Google. What does it really take to get there? How long will it take me to get there? This is my first post to this column but over time I hope to answer all these questions and more. For today I’ll give you some pointers on what to look for and what to run away from.

First of all the scams:

1. NO ONE can guarantee the number 1 spot on Google or any other search engine. If someone tells you they can what they are going to do is take your money (usually $200-$500) and put half of it in a pay per click account overture or Google adwords and pocket the other half. Same goes with someone who guarantees results in 48-72 hours.

2. Never use link networking or link farming sites. These will get you penalized or banned from the search engines. The reason is if you have had 10 inbound links to your site for two years and over night you have 1,000 inbound links this is going to appear unnatural to the search engines and considered spamming.

3. Run away as fast as you can if you hear anything similar to: no one will see the content, we hide content, we use cloaking software, we use layering, or anyone who even hints at deceiving the search engines in any way. This will get you banned. The search engines want to see what the average joe who goes to your site will see.

4. Re-direct and multiple domain names. Some SEO firms will use multiple domain names with spam content to get search engine traffic and then re-direct the traffic to your site. This technique was invented by people in the adult industry so that no matter what keywords you searched you would be re-directed to an adult site. You could punch in lawn chair and get re-directed to an adult site. As amusing as it was it got old when after you were on the 3rd page of results and you still hadn’t found some patio furniture.

5. We’ll submit you to 75,000 search engines. Another example of spamming. This will get you penalized or banned almost overnight.

2) 'Search Engines' - To get the free traffic from the search engines you will want to get ranked as high as possible. So here are a few tips that should be helpful: Have lots of links to other sites, use the best keywords for your targeted market on your website/sales page and choose your domain name wisely.

3) 'Write Articles' - Do you want to get a ton of free traffic to your website? Just start writing articles and submit them to related ezines. Always make sure your articles are filled with quality content. And you can include your bylines at the bottom of all articles. Then whenever someone reads your article they will be exposed to a link to your website.

4) 'Solo Ads in Ezines' - Solo ads should also be a good way to send traffic to your site. Find ezines that are related to your market and place ads with them. Another thing to mention is if your ads are making you money then keep running them. But you will also want to run split test to try to improve your ads.

6) 'Ads to AOL Customers' - You could send ads to the 20 million people using AOL to collect even more traffic. Just use the same techniques as in 'Classified Ads in Ezines'. Again for best results try to create irresistible ads.

7) 'Banner Ads' - You may want to invest in some banner ads for even more traffic. If you use a word banner ad, then it can be written similar to a classified ad. Some banner ads are cost per impression and others are cost per click. With the cost per click banner ad you only pay when someone visits your site, which may be better. 500 impressions doesn't really mean anything if no one visits your website. But 500 clicks on your banner ad mean 500 people to your site.

Why Link Farm and FFA Submissions Are a Bad Idea

Before search engines got smart, a site’s page ranking was based on keyword match-ups. When webmasters stock-piled their sites with keywords, the wrong sites were getting too much attention. Google decided to focus on a site’s “popularity” instead. The number of incoming links became the focus of PR criteria. The theory behind this system was that if a lot of sites link to another site, that site would contain valuable content.

But again, webmasters got sneaky. With this trend, we began to see the evolution of “Link Farms” and “Free-for-All” (FFA) sites. These pages were essentially a gigantic collection of (often times) useless links. In most cases, the sites were not categorized or descriptive. They became a place for webmasters to dump their links in order to make their site appear more popular.

This strategy worked for some time, but soon search engines caught on. “Link Farms” and FFA sites served no purpose to web users. Since Google prides itself on catering to web users (and NOT developers), a solution had to be formed. “Link Farms” were cluttering up the web and making it more difficult for users to find valuable resources online.

Google soon began to rate the quality of the links that determined a site’s “link pop.” “Link Farms” and FFA sites became categorized as spam, and thus contributed no value to a site’s link popularity.

You built that content rich web page optimized for your Keyword phrases but is it really working? By looking at these 5 Stats readily available from your CPanel you will quickly learn what you are doing well and what you need to improve on.

Most Web Hosts will provide you with a Cpanel, where you can create E-mail Accounts, Upload Web Pages and check your stats. Most of the Cpanel’s are very similar if not identical to the one my Hosts uses.

When it is time to check my web page traffic statistics I click on Log and then Web/FTP Stats and finally AWStats. I am now presented with a List of all kinds of Stats to look at. Daily History, Monthly History, Country, Browser, Day of Week, Hour or Day. Trying to understand them all will make you dizzy. Since my traffic comes from 3 primary places Search Engines, One Way back links and Reciprocal links I concentrate on the following 5 Stats

Referers Origin
Referring search engines
Referring sites
Search Keyphrases
Search Keywords

1 - Referers Origin

This Stat will give you a breakdown of what percent of your traffic came from the following categories

Direct address / Bookmarks
Links from a NewsGroup
Links from an Internet Search Engine
Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines)
Unknown Origin

This stat is a snap shop of your overall traffic. Some questions to ask yourself

Is your traffic well balanced between all the areas?
Does your traffic favor Search engines over Newsgroups and External pages.
If you concentrate your effort in one of these areas more then others did you get the expected result?
Where am I weakest?
Where am I strongest?

2 - Referring search engines

This Stat will list all the major search engines and tell you what percent of your search engine traffic came from each Search engine. It is best to concentrate on the Big 3 (Yahoo, MSN and Google). Google is the Most Popular Search engine with Yahoo a close 2nd and MSn 3rd.

Google Processes about 37% of all Internet Search requests
Yahoo Process about 35% of all Internet Search requests
MSN Process about 16% of all Internet Search requests
The remaining Internet Search requests are split between the rest of the search engines

Is the Search engine Traffic to your web page divided the same way? Does any search engine over perfrom or under perform it’s internet average?

3 - Referring sites

This will tell you which web pages are your best link partners. If you do article submissions or other forms of linking this will tell you how well this worked. I was shocked to see that 10% of all my non Search engine traffic came from 1 web page where I gave a testimonial.

4 - Search Keyphrases

Here you can see your Top 10 Keyword Phrases as well as a full list of your keyword phrases. Look over the top 10? Are those the one’s you expected? Are you surprised by the results? Where can you do better?

Next look over the full list? Do you have under achievers or over archives?

5 - Search Keywords

Unless you happen to be optimizing for a keyword like Babies, Pillows or Graduates you wouldn’t need to worry about this Stat. Most of the Keywords reported don’t give much useful information. If you are optimizing for a Keyword like babies then find babies in the list and see how well you are doing.
