Hotmail Becomes Outlook

This is the new Hotmail, which is now officially called Outlook (it had the label "NewMail" in the preview). Outlook changes the design and layout of Hotmail to bring it more in line with the minimalist design aesthetic of Windows 8 Metro, emphasizing straight lines, thin fonts and white space.

If you’ve been on the Internet for a long time, there’s a good chance Hotmail was your first email address. Launched in 1996, Hotmail was bought by Microsoft the following year, and the service has gone through myriad changes since then. Today, Microsoft is making its most radical change yet to the 16-year-old email service.

For starters, the Hotmail brand is toast. Microsoft is rebranding the service under the Outlook banner, moving the service to Outlook.com. The Hotmail site will still be there, and users won’t be forced to make the switch — yet — but the message is clear: Going forward, Microsoft email is called Outlook. What is Chromebook?

A Chromebook is just like a small laptop, with some key differences. It is relatively thin, and to the untrained eye doesn’t seem to have an operating system. Yes, you heard right, there’s no obvious operating system. Of course there is one, else the device wouldn’t work, but there isn’t a Start Menu or anything else that you recognize as part of your operating system. Instead, all you get is a nice login screen and a browser. That’s it.

Google Chromebook is a thin client laptop that is configured with the Chrome operating system (Chrome OS). Because the only software application that Chrome OS can run locally is the Google Chrome browser, a Chromebook is often described as a browser-in-a-box.

Benefits of Chrome:

As it’s Google’s device/idea, the included browser is obviously Chrome. Honestly it isn’t a bad thing, as Chrome’s userbase is growing at an exponential rate. Just look at this graph if you don’t believe me! Also, Chrome’s focus on speed and overall performance is a plus for the low powered device (which still sports a dual-core Intel Atom processor).
That’s it; it’s just you and the Chromebook with literally only Chrome on it. While it isn’t meant to replace all your computers (and I don’t see that happening anytime soon), it is a good replacement for netbooks and laptops for those who just use the Internet anyways.

so.cl "Microsoft's social networking"

Microsoft's social networking experiment, So.cl, a site designed around sharing Web content pulled from Bing searches, is now available for all users. Launched in December and aimed at students, So.cl is not meant to compete with popular social networks such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter. So.cl isn't a place to connect with friends and share moments from your lives.

Instead, So.cl is more like an image board where you post and share web-based content based on general interest categories such as cars, movies, and sports -- all of which is filtered through a built-in Bing search tool.

So.cl isn't for everyone and convincing users to fit this site into an already busy online life with Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and LinkedIn will be a tough sell for Microsoft.

Then again, So.cl doesn't appear to be a product built for mass appeal. The social network is still under the "Microsoft Research" banner and is very much a development project. You may find at times that links won't work, content won't populate your feed, and other functions will be limited. But if you're a hard core social networking fan and want to see what Microsoft is up to, here's a quick peek at So.cl.

What is So.cl?

So.cl began as, and, indeed, still is, an experiment in how social search can help with learning, as dreamt up by Microsoft Fuse Labs. Set up as a social network, at its core is a social search tool with Bing behind it. The user types in a search term in So.cl and, like with a normal search engine, you can choose to get results as videos, images, web or news. The results that are relevant to your needs can then be pulled into your feed, shared and used to create a rich post made up of a montage of all the different media types. You than have a perfect, scrapbook-like answer to your question or subject area.

What makes So.cl social?

By default, any searches made with in So.cl are public. The idea behind that is that other users can then discover rich posts that were created under the same or similar searches and therefore save themselves a serious amount of leg work as well as discover things that perhaps they hadn’t considered. By the same token, posts can become collaborative work.

Where are my friends?

The system on So.cl is a bit more like Twitter than Facebook with followers and the followed rather than a network of friends that you already know. The idea is that you can make new So.cl relationships based on having similar interests or having searched and researched in the same subject areas.

Of course, you can still link up with your real-world friends. So.cl allows you to sign in with either your Windows Live ID or your Facebook one and will search your e-mail address book for friends already on So.cl, in the case of the former, and will allow you to invite people from Facebook manually. You’re also welcome to post anything you do on So.cl automatically in your Facebook News Feed as well, but this is not the default option.

Guide To The New Facebook Pages Timeline

You knew it was bound to happen. In January when Facebook changed Profiles to Timeline, you knew Pages would soon follow in its footsteps. And sure enough, they’ve just announced the launch of Facebook Timeline for Pages. But what does it mean for your business? How will it help you attract more business? A variety of new features are now available to help you out – here is how they work and how to use them to benefit your business.

Step One Activate Your Timeline

When you open up your Facebook Page, you will find a Preview button located at the top of your Page. Or you can visit the Timeline for Pages manager and select the Page you wish to add Timeline too.

One you enter your Page Preview, you can tour the new features, redesign your Page until you are happy with it, and Publish it once you are set. You can Publish it at any time. But be aware that on March 30, 2012, your Timeline will automatically take affect, so be sure to play around with it between now and then.

Step 2 Select Your Cover

In your “About” section of the tour, you can choose your cover photo for your Page. If you are familiar with your Profile Timeline feature, this is similar to the large banner you placed at the top of your Profile. For Pages, your over photo dimensions are 851×315 pixels. You can choose one photo that is representative of your brand, or play it up a little and create a collage to showcase your work.

Be sure you adhere to Facebook’s policies regarding cover photos. Your cover photo cannot include:

Price or purchase information

Contact information such as website address, email address, mailing address or any other contact information that normally goes in your contact page

References to Facebook features, such as “Like” or “Share” or arrows pointing out actions to these items

Call to action – “Get It Now” or “Buy Today”

Covers may not be false or misleading and may not infringe on any third parties intellectual property

Step 3 Adjust Your Profile Picture

Just like in the old Pages, you will still have a Profile Picture that will follow you as you move around Facebook. Create an image that is representative of your brand and that you want featured in areas like news feeds and comments. The image should be square and at least 180 pixels wide.

Step 4 Page Apps

Below your cover photo is your app section. This is where you will highlight what is important to you. Photos will automatically be placed into the first spot, but the other spots are optional and can be changed around whenever you choose. You have the option of placing up to 12 apps in any order you choose. You can also customize the images that are shown for each app in the Manage – Edit Page section of your Page.

If you used a “Like gate” as your default landing page in the past, which required users to Like your Page in exchange for the ability to view the Page, keep in mind while they are still permitted, they won’t be nearly as powerful because they won’t be the first thing a user sees. Instead, it will be built into the Page App section, requiring them to click on it in order to see the information.

Step 5 Star Hide or Pin

The next section allow you to build out your timeline. By hovering over individual stories, you can move them, make them wider, hide them from view, highlight them as important, or delete them entirely.

A great new feature is you can pin or anchor a specific story to the top of your timeline for up to 7 days. This means you can highlight specific posts, events, promotions, or other call to action items at the top, preventing it from getting buried quickly if you post frequently.

Step 6 Admin Panel

The admin panel is your dashboard to what is happening within Facebook. You can click over whenever you choose to keep a pulse on what is happening within your page. You can respond to comments, edit your page setting, access Page Insights (analytics) and even create an ad for your Page if you desire.

Step 7 Enable Messages

With the new Pages Timeline, you now have access to a brand new feature, Messages. You can now allow users to send you personalized messages, making it easier to hold private conversations right from your Facebook platform rather than moving to email or another communication function. You can use it when you prefer a conversation not to be made public. If you choose to use it now to see how it works for you, you can always change it on the Admin Panel in the future if you decide its not for you.

Best Practices for Facebook Timeline

Ready to get started with Facebook Timeline? Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind as you develop and publish your Timeline and use it to boost your brand in the Facebook community.

Publish More Visual Content

If you are used to your Profiles Timeline at this point, you know visual items stand out and attract more attention than plain copy alone. Facebook also admits that including photo albums and pictures can generate as much as 2x more engagement than plain posts alone. Because you are a photographer, be creative with your images and showcase what you do in a variety of ways. Think photos, storyboards, collages and other visualizations. You are looking for the WOW factor here.

Focus In On Your Apps

Because you can no longer have a Welcome page, you can no longer control the first thing people focus on when they enter your Page. Yet you can still direct them by placing obvious things in the space provided. You can control what apps are placed in the Apps toolbar directly below your cover photo. Be sure to rearrange your icons to show your top tabs that you are using for lead generation. Watch those and monitor them, changing out photos and information to try and get the highest click rates as possible.

Make Sure Your Best Posts Are Visible

Some posts will be more positive and attract more attention than others. Be sure to call these out and highlight them on your Timeline.

Pin New Features Every 7 Days

You are now allowed to pin content to the top of your Page for 7 days at a time. Use this to anchor your best ideas and promotions, and remember to go back to add something new every 7 days. You can pin everything from events to promotions, or maybe even highlight a current shoot you are proud of. Play around with this feature to find out what helps you most when attracting new customers to your business.

This way people will have an easy-to-remember way to find you. We expect to offer even more ways to use your Facebook username in the future.

Your new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the Web. People can enter a Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or a popular search engine like Google, for example, which will make it much easier for people to find friends with common names. Your username will have the same privacy setting as your profile name in Search, and you can always edit your search privacy settings here.

Facebook believes users want to use the social network’s real-time features without having to keep a browser window open. The social networking giant is clearly hoping that users will leave Messenger for Windows on throughout the day, probably since most Facebook addicts already do so with a browser tab. In addition to being a standalone application, Facebook Messenger for Windows can be snapped to the side of the screen; that’s probably why it only works for Windows 7.

The application was developed entirely by Facebook and does not constitute a new partnership with Microsoft, which is a big investor in Facebook. It’s not clear if Facebook will offer support for anything before Windows 7, or if it will simply move on towards Windows 8. Clients for Mac and Linux will likely only be released if the Windows 7 version proves popular.

Most owners of Android-powered smartphones know about Google Voice Actions, which, among other things, allows you to dictate text messages using just your voice.

However, there's still a bit of screen interaction required, as you have to find and tap the microphone to engage Voice Actions. And what about messages you receive? There's no hands-free help there.

Enter Text by Voice, an admirably effective app that makes texting a totally hands-free experience. With it you can send and listen to messages without so much as touching your phone. It's entirely voice-powered

As the above demonstration video, er, demonstrates, Text by Voice requires zero interaction with your phone (save for launching the app before you hit the road). Thus you can leave your phone up on your dashboard, at your side in a cupholder, or wherever, then go about the business of driving.

When a text message arrives, the app reads it aloud--and gives you the option of repeating it, replying to it, or ignoring it. And if you want to compose and send a message, you simply say the activation phrase ("text by voice," of course). That, my friends, is the way all smartphones should work. Currently in open beta, StartTalking works with smartphones running Android 2.0 or later and is now available for download from the Android Marketplace or by using an Android phone’s browser to visit http://m.starttalking.com. Adzero is world’s first bamboo Smartphone but this is not the first time bamboo has been used in the design of technology products. For example, Bamboo Bicycle was first showcased in 1894; Asus used the natural material in laptops and PCs a few years ago and over the years bamboo, a vegetative fiber which grows in many parts of Nigeria, has been used mainly for temporary structures like fencing of buildings, in rural areas, while in Urban areas it is predominantly used on construction sites as support during concreting.

Bamboo might just be another world’s most sustainable resources. It is the fastest growing grass and can shoot up a yard or more a day. ADzero –a new innovative Smartphone made of bamboo which is receiving backing from a technology entrepreneur, was meant for the Chinese market but it attracted a lot of interest at a London Design Week. The Adzero is a prototype running Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It will be available at selected independent UK retailers by the end of 2012. “I can’t wait to see my mobile phone in shops this year,” said Woodhouse.

A design student from Middlesex University in the UK will see his unique mobile phone made from bamboo hit the UK market in 2012.

The new smartphone – called ‘ADzero’ - is made from four year old organically grown bamboo specially treated for durability. Like many phones it will include a camera, but ADzero features technology called a ‘ring flash’ not available on any current mobile phone. A circular photographic flash around the camera’s lens ensures very even illumination and minimises shadows. The unique handset is made from as many materials from sustainable sources as possible.

The sleek new phone is approximately half the weight of an Apple iPhone, while boasting a larger screen and runs on the Android system.

The phone is designed by Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, a 23-year-old Middlesex University student from Shepherds Bush, who designed a mobile phone in his spare time after getting frustrated with the lack of variety in the mobile phone market. After posting his creations on forums and websites, he was contacted by a technology entrepreneur who wanted to bring his ideas to life.

The pair joined forces with a hardware engineer and within weeks had set up a company to manufacture the phone.

Kieron-Scott’s smartphone was initially intended for the Chinese market, but after receiving an enthusiastic reception at a design show in London during London Design Week 2011, his company ‘A.D.’ plan on launching the phone in the UK first and then open up to other markets. The company will target ‘design aware’ retailers and boutiques in the UK.

Windows Live SkyDrive, initially called Windows Live Folders, is a free-of-chargefile hosting service that allows users to upload files to a cloud storage and then access them from a Web browser. It is part of Microsoft's Windows Live range of online services, and uses Windows Live ID to control access to files, allowing users to keep the files private, share them with contacts, or make the files public. Publicly-shared files do not require a Windows Live ID to access.

What is Windows Live SkyDrive?
