Hey zinesters. We here at Webzine HQ would like to take this opportunity to pimp a very cool event happening this March called SXSW Interactive. Maybe you’ve heard of it. Webzine and SXSW are kindred spirits, both covering much about what’s cool in independent online publishing. Many speakers and panelists of past Webzines are also alums of SXSW. In fact, it was seeing so many former Webzine participants from the bubble 1.0 days at SXSW last year, that motivated the return of of Webzine in 2005. Former Webziners slated for SXSW in 2006 include Heather Gold, Molly GoLightly, Lane Becker, Tantek Çelik, Philip Kaplan, George Kelly, JD Lasica, Nicole Lee, Matt Mullenweg, Chris Pirillo, Ted Rheingold, Eric Rice, Eris Stassi, Philip Torrone, Evan Williams. OK, enough name dropping. Get down to Austin in March and experience the indie love all over again. We’ll see you there.

San Francisco Commends Webzine 2005

It seems as we’re liked around ol’ City Hall. This past Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution commending Webzine 2005 for promoting independent online publishing. Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced the resolution to the full board and it was passed by a unanimous vote. Who’d a thunk? We’re tickled pink at the honor and can’t wait for the trophy to show up so we can rub the spring for good luck. We do get a trophy, right? Unbelievable!

Wow. In-friggin-credible! Everything. The quality of the panels & workshops, the vounteers, the emcess, the tech support, the Master’s Lounge, the sponsors, the volunteers, the parties and yes again, the volunteers all made this the most memorable Webzine in years. I know this is the first Webzine in years, but who is gonna forget it anytime soon?

Over the next few days we will post audio of the panel sessions and workshops. They will all be released as individual podcasts. Look for the RSS feed here soon. We also have TONS of video, which is going to take a bit more time to digest. We are committed to getting all this out there for you, Mr. & Mrs. Internet, to hear, see, smell and dream about.

Day Two

Another action packed day at Webzine is in full swing. The videologgers show here entertained the crowd with a special Webzine reel and had a real-time video ichat conversation with another vlogger in some country, which I can’t remember. The Neighborhood Blogging panel is currently generating some interest. Still a couple more hours before this Webzine comes to a happy conclusion.

Day One

Wow. What a frigging blast that was! There was so much indie love in the room, all three rooms. Saturday saw a packed house, with overflow capacity for Jacob Appelbaum’s stellar talk, which is now online. The sessions flowed smoothly, from panel discussions to workshops to the packed Master’s Lounge for the Blog Warez Dance Off. Thanks to everyone for coming out to the after party as well. I’m sure the incriminating pictures and video are already making the rounds. Day 2 is about to begin. Come on down and become part of the madness, or follow along in the wiki.

Webzine 2005 is in full effect on this beautiful Saturday afternoon in San Francisco. Jacob Appelbaum has just finished speaking and the next round of sessions are about to begin. Our internet connectivity is not as robust as we’d like, so we’ve had to suspend the live streaming. We are recording the sessions and will get those uploaded as soon as we can. For now, check out the Flickr feed and the blog posts.

Tonight’s the night! We’re celebrating the opening of Webzine at Cafe Du Nord 8-10pm, but you already knew that. For you last minute ticket buyers, there is a bit of good news. Online ticket sales have been extended through 6:30pm TONIGHT. Get them online and save $10 over the weekend pass or $5 off the day pass.

We’ve added a few things to things to the schedule to give you even more incentive to drink the Webzine kool-aid.

She walked off the set of MTV’s Real World Seattle after being bitch slapped by another cast member while the cameras rolled on. Irene is now a media activist & theorist and will talk a bit about ‘being the media’.

Jonas Luster (Freya, Sunday, 4-4:20)
Don’t utter the words ’social networking’ near Jonas or he might have to get all peacekeeper on yer ass. He’ll tell you why there is no such thing as social networking.

Intro to Digital Photography & Photoblogging (Valhalla, Saturday, 3:00-3:50)
Lucas Shuman & Jose Louis Martinez are the experienced dojos of digital photography that will help you take better pictures and show you how you can share them with the world.

[FUN STUFF]
Linux Robot Demo (Valhalla, Sunday, 4-4:30)
Michael Shiloh will demonstrate his interactive Linux based robot. The robot is a 2 drive wheel, 2 caster wheel platform with some basic sensors and a Linux SBC. Biddie-biddie-biddie!

Video screening: This Spartan Life (Valhalla, Sunday 4:30-5)
A talk show in games space. Damian Lacedaemion is not your average talk show host. He lives inside an online game where daily existence is a struggle against overwhelming odds (and other, much better players.)

Webzine Wiki Open for Beeznass

Like all good grassroots geek events, we’ve got a wiki. For you. Yes you. This wiki is the place to share information with attendees about yourself, your project or just find out where the nearest Internet cafe is from the venue. This will also be the place for scheduling the Open Sessions in the Master’s Lounge, which opens for signups Saturday morning at 11am. You’ll hear more about that soon. For now, feel free to share your intimate details of geekery and help us expand our knowledge base.

Webzine is a mere 4 days away, but whose counting? Please join us this Friday night for the official Webzine 2005 kick off party at the Cafe Du Nord, sponsored by our friends at SFist. Webzine attendees will get in free from 8-10pm. Find your favorite SFister once you enter and grab some of those coveted drink tickets. Schmooze, booze and get jiggy with DJs Karen and DJ Rock Foxy of Touch Me I’m Sick.
