Port Douglas is the perfect place for a wedding, not only is it the only spot on Earth where two natural and world-heritage-listed sites are located, it is also in close proximity to the airport which offers a convenient location for out of town guests. The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest are two natural heritage sites which set the perfect scene for natural lovers, and offer a perfect setting for a wedding.

If you are having a Port Douglas wedding and would like a more traditional setting, wedding receptions Port Douglas can be booked at the Salt House or Watergate Port Douglas. However before choosing the wedding reception venue and Port Douglas wedding celebrants like Ross Simmons Marriage Celebrant, it is important to set a date and send out your Port Douglas wedding invitations. Personalized Ribbons for example, offers a wide selection of beautiful invitations in Port Douglas, and will help you send out “save the date” cards before choosing the venue and sending out the real invitations.

Traditional Or Non-Traditional

If you are interested in a more traditional church wedding, there are many non-denominational churches in Port Douglas which will perform all types of weddings. You can find churches in the township of Port Douglas, some of which offer a breathtaking panoramic view. In addition, you can also find churches which feature large glass windows that showcase the amazing lookout points. Have your Port Douglas wedding photography performed by Azure Photography in front of the view of the Coral Sea and rainforest clad mountains to make a perfect wedding memory. This traditional church also offers typical stained glass windows, comfortable wooden pews and a cute church bell. Have someone ring the wedding bells after your ceremony and fulfil your childhood dreams of your wedding day.

However, if you would like another option, consider another church on the Beach. There are a few cosy chapels that were intentionally created to showcase the white sand beach and its surroundings. The only issue with having a chapel on the beach is that if it has large windows your guests may be looking out the window at the surroundings, which may take the attention off you.

Looking At Alternatives

If you are looking for an alternative wedding ceremony in Port Douglas, fortunately you have a plethora of options to choose from. Many people opt for a beach wedding on the four mile long beach with its tropical white sand, as it is an affordable option. There is no charge as long as the ceremony is less than one hour, which most are. Guests tend to get bored with long ceremonies, so keeping it short is a good idea. Those who are looking for an alternative, but do not wish to have a beach wedding, may enjoy an exotic wedding onboard a sailboat or yacht while cruising around the Great Barrier Reef.

If you are having a Port Douglas wedding, make sure you take all of the above into consideration. Failure to do so may result in a stressful engagement and a frustrating wedding day.

Having a budget can help the whole planning process of the wedding make more sense. Although money has little to do with love, weddings can prove expensive occasions, so it’s really important to determine how much money you will have to work with.

These days anything goes when it comes to funding a wedding, from the bride and groom funding the entire event themselves, to the parents assisting with the expenses, and right through to your guests paying for their own meals at the reception.

Regardless of how much money you have, a well planned, well organised budget may help you make the most of any financial situation. You can still have an amazing and perfect day whatever your budget is.

How To Start Your Budget

Make a list of all the services and things you would like for the wedding. Allocate a researched cost next to each item. Keep your costs realistic, allow a little extra money for emergencies and last-minute contingencies and, once you’ve determined your budget, stick to it.

Regardless of how much or how little money you’ve got to spend on your wedding, a budget spreadsheet should help you to keep track of your budgeted allocation, paid deposits and outstanding costs. You might want to develop your own or use our Booking and Budget Checklist to help keep track of all your expenses.

If you feel that you’re going to be over your allocated funds you may need to eliminate items that may not be a high priority. By listing your lowest priorities in ascending order, allocating less money to items where you discover savings can be made, and compromising on one expense to allow more for another. For example, you might decide to save money by making your own invitations, or choosing a smaller wedding cake to allow more for your floral bouquet, or opting to reduce the number of guests at the reception so that you can afford the venue you really want.

Delegation Is A Bride’s Best Friend

So you’ve made your budget checklist and you now have a fair idea of the things you need to budget for and organize. But don’t be overwhelmed by the preparations that lie ahead. You most likely have plenty of willing helping hands from family and friends that want to be involved in your wedding preparations. And remember, once the bookings have been organized you’ll have a range of professional services at your disposal to whom you can outsource whatever tasks you need to.

Use The Professionals

There are thousands of businesses today that can provide you with professional wedding services that can assist you with almost every aspect of your wedding preparations. This can be from printing the invitations to arranging quotes and bookings, as well as decorating the venue for the reception.

A wedding planner, coordinator or consultant can almost act as a couple’s personal assistant, taking care of as many, or as few, preparations as you deem necessary. In addition, the wedding planner may also have a network of regular suppliers at their disposal, through which some cost savings can be made.

Professional caterers, cake decorators, venue decorators, dressmakers, wedding dress boutiques, car hire & drivers, florists, hair stylists, makeup artists, celebrant, musicians, photographers, printers, stationery makers or suppliers, travel agents, videographers can be employed to assist with preparations and contribute to your day’s requirements.

Depending on where you are marrying, venues and suppliers may all be booked months or even years in advance, so it’s important to start making bookings as soon as you have a date confirmed.

Your wedding may seem a long way a way, but the time will pass quickly, so avoid the temptation to procrastinate. Wedding House is an online wedding planner where there are thousands of wedding businesses waiting to help you with your special day.

For all your budgeting, delegating plus more wedding information download a FREE copy of “Everything You Need To Know To Have A Successful Wedding!” and also check out the different wedding suppliers that are just waiting to quote you on their services.

Wedding Florists are those who render their services based on the individual’s idea of wedding. They work on various wedding arrangements such as making wedding bouquets and décor that heightens the wedding themes.

Skilled florists can create adorable and specialized wedding arrangements. Thus, a good florist is responsible for styling the overall look of ceremony, thereby drawing the admiration from the guests.

The majority of florists offer their floral services through their shops or, an individual can also place their order online.

Procedures To Be Followed In Selecting A Florist:

Individuals can choose their wedding florists by visiting the local florists shop or the store which is renowned for its services. A person can refer to the local phone directory to get the list of florists and can straightway go to them. Friends and neighbors are excellent ways to get the idea about how a particular florist executes their work for a wedding. A person needs not finalize the first florist for the job. Visit a few more florists before settling down on one particular florist. Hence, it is beneficial to spend some time while choosing the right florist, because ultimately the entire arrangement has to be done by them, which can make or break the look of the occasion.

If an individual has selected the wedding florist who has done brilliant work in other weddings too, then they can leave the entire job to that florist. After this you will have to discus with the florist about the motif of wedding flowers to be incorporated in bouquets, garlands and other arrangements. A florist also advises the customer about how to tend the flowers and the steps to be adopted to keep them fresh when they are delivered to them. Veteran florists guide the individual better, as they have the experience of producing floral arrangements for numerous weddings.

More On Wedding Florists:

An individual need not be hesitant to ask the wedding florists about their experience and their working method, as styling the wedding is the central facet. Next, a person has to discuss about the expenses and fees in getting the job done. Different people have different tastes, needs and wants, so emphasis has to be given on selection of flowers. Walls, interiors, dress of bride and bridegroom have to be coordinated with wedding arrangements.

Seasons also impart their touch to weddings as winter wedding arrangement can be very different than that of a summer and a tropical wedding. Wedding florists have to be given full information about minute arrangements, whether the wedding is taking place indoors, outdoors or in garden.

Lastly, there are thousands of florists’ available offering services at competitive prices, but entrusting the job to the right one is necessary to ensure that the wedding arrangement becomes gorgeous and memorable.

You’re going to be spending an entire day, one of the most memorable days, with this person so you want to make sure you like them and they’re personable.

Choose a Style for the Wedding Photography You want to look at their style. And when you’re looking at their style you also need to think ahead as to what kind of style you want your wedding to be photographed. Is it something more photo journalism where it’s telling the story, is it something more posed? You want a sleeker look, do you want a more real look. And that can kind of begin the process of eliminating it and adding to your list of photographers when you’re looking at their website.

Contrary to popular belief, finding your perfect gown does not involve divine intervention; it simply involves getting waist-deep in tulle, hoops and varying shades of white. With our guide you’ll be wearing your dream gown in no time!

The Early Bride Catches The Dress – Shop Early

You can’t be too organised when it comes to your gown. Your dress should be one of the first things you arrange, it’s a good idea to have it chosen eight to ten months prior to your wedding day.

When you arrive at the dress shop for your appointment, make sure you are wearing a strapless bra and some nude colour underpants. You will also need to bring an open mind and try as many different styles on as you can… yes even those that make you shudder – most dresses look different when on a three-dimensional figure.

Take a good and honest friend with you so that if you are looking like a giant marshmallow you will know. The sales woman doesn’t know your taste and her taste might just be marshmallow-orientated. Don’t kid yourself into thinking that, like a soul mate, there is only one dress for you – there may be many out there that are perfect. You need to be clear about what style suits you, which materials you like and don’t like, the general style you’re after, set a budget, and most importantly be patient and keep a good sense of humour.

Here Are Some Shopping Options

Couture

Couturiers are dress specialists who have a collection of original gowns.

They are the pricey option, but in return you receive a handmade unique gown that fits like a glove.

Generally they need at least eight months.

The dress designer will set up about five fittings so you can see the gown at every stage.

Boutiques

You will try on a range of sample dresses to give you an idea of your style.

Usually they are reasonably priced.

They can work off shorter time schedules – as a rule you need to order six months prior to your wedding day.

Once your dress arrives it will need altering, which is an additional cost to the dress price – so before you set your heart on one, ask about the cost of alterations.

You will need about three fittings once the gown arrives.

Other Options

Department stores are great if you have limited time or budget. They may not have ‘wedding dresses’ as such, but you may find yourself a stunning white dress. Who would know?

The Internet – Online auctions and stores provide another way to purchase a gown. It is usually cheaper but comes with some risks. Remember you are buying from an image that doesn’t clearly show details such as colour, embellishments and fabric. Try on styles that are similar so you will know if it is likely to suit you. If you buy online, your dress will almost always need alterations – so find a good dressmaker.

Materials – try on many different types of fabrics, there is a wide variety and as each fabric falls differently, so it will look different on each body shape.

Which Shape Suits You?

The best approach with gowns is to try on every style – from ball gown to fishtail. Also listen to the dress designer, for she deals with different body shapes every day and can probably point you in the best direction. The perfect shape will hide the parts you are paranoid about and flaunt your best assets.

There Are Many Whites – Which White For You?

Stark white – original chalky white looks best on people with a dark complexion but should be avoided by anyone too fair.

Off-white – also described as ‘silk’, ‘diamond’ or ‘natural’ white, is a little bit softer than stark white and suited to anyone with a yellow undertone.

Ivory - can go by names like eggshell and candlelight and has a yellow undertone for all fair-skinned women.

Champagne – sometimes called ‘rum’, has hints of pink, which make medium coloured skin with pink undertones glow.

Wedding lighting has amazing transformative power. Arranged well, and a simple venue can become a spectacular one. It can relax your guests or energize them. Most importantly, it can deliver the larger-than-life atmosphere of romance and celebration that will define a brilliant wedding.

Unlike most aspects of a wedding, your ambition with lighting does not have to be constrained by your budget. While the many pricier options out there will do the job well, there’s always a DIY alternative that will work just as efficiently. If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and put in the planning hours (or better yet, have friends, family, bridesmaids or groomsmen willing to do it for you), a little bit of imagination and creativity can go a long, long way.

Paper Lanterns As An Alternative

Paper lanterns are among the cheapest and most versatile wedding lighting options available. Retailing at just a few dollars each, either online or at your nearest Chinatown, these simple, foldable lanterns can be illuminated by either candle or LED lighting. Not all venues will allow flames, so it’s important to check early and plan ahead. LED lights, however, are increasingly popular weddings for two practical reasons: they use relatively little electricity and generate relatively little heat.

With the current popularity of mood lighting, it’s worth exploring options for string lighting that can change colour on command as the reception progresses. Such features can make this a much pricier option, but never say never!

That said, the real charm of paper lanterns is in their simplicity. Basic round hanging lanterns, used sparingly, can make an outdoor wedding or reception area all the more stunning, especially if hanging ethereally from the trees. Consider using small cylindrical lanterns to light up key paths, important features or set boundaries. If your reception is indoors, hanging lanterns are just as effective at transforming bland walls or spaces into points of genuine interest.

Guiding Your Guest’s Attention

Consider where you want your guest’s attention. Do you want their eyes on a certain point in the room, such as the podium, bridal party table or dance floor? If so, prominent wall lighting may distract attention away from where it’s needed. Sometimes less is more; it’s often the understated arrangements that create a more interesting glow.

One popular technique is to place a tiny battery-powered light in each table’s centerpiece bowl or vase and surround it with transparent marbles or beads. This will ensure each table has an unconventional and subtly unique offering.

If you’re only using one colour, mix it up with differing shapes and sizes. You might also like to try grouping large groups of lanterns in small clusters. This will create a more natural, sophisticated look. Alternatively, try arranging groups of lanterns in a completely horizontal or vertical line to give them an “artier” appearance.

There’s realistically no limit to the scale or ambition of wedding lighting. As most paper lanterns are foldable and reusable, you’ll have ample opportunity for trial and error testing beforehand. Don’t be afraid to go a little crazy! Remember: when it comes to your big day, creativity is the real currency.

Planning a wedding can be a tremendous project, especially if you plan on taking care of the details yourself. But it can be done, especially if you treat the entire wedding as you would any other long-term project, and use some of these very handy tips for staying on top of your to-do list.

The Core of Your Project

Meet your new best friend. He is a 2-inch round-ring binder. You can buy him at any office supply store and he is going to escort you everywhere you go. Yes, I know, it may seem simpler to put everything in your computer, or even to purchase a software package designed especially for bridal planning, but believe me, the binder is the better option.

You may suddenly be called upon at odd times or in odd places to come up with information on something (confirmation numbers, reservation numbers, total guest list numbers, emergency contact information etc.) that you do not have access to. You may not even be anywhere near a computer to access your information. So a binder it is.

Purchase a package of 12 tabs and even zipper pockets for receipts and other paperwork. Each tab is going to be set up for a different section of your wedding; ceremony, reception, guest list, dresses & tuxes, flowers, food, music etc. In the front you will have your timeline/schedule of when each of the things that needs to be done should be done. In the back you will have extra paper and a portable three-hole punch (the kind that high school students use for their homework). You will most likely find that you will have sub-lists inside of each section of your binder as your plans start to come together.

Make sure that you have a zipper pocket with pens, pencils and erasers in it, as you are going to be doing a lot of writing. As you begin to accumulate ideas and vendor names, receipts and other paperwork, make sure that they get put in their binders (or at least copies of the paperwork get put in the binders). Keep the originals in a safe place so that they do not get lost.

Find An Online Resource Centre

The internet is a tremendous tool, and online wedding sites that give you checklists and timelines as well as guest list managers and gift trackers can offer you any number of tools to help you planning your wedding AND stay within budget. These tools (and the charts, lists and graphs they generate) can work wonders for helping you to organize your wedding binder.

Plan For A Weekly Checkup

If you have others helping you with the planning of your wedding, make sure that you schedule a weekly checkup. Have it at a café or at your own house, but make sure that everyone brings in what they’ve accomplished that week and gets you up to speed on what they are working on now. Even if you are doing everything yourself, sitting down once a week with someone who is willing to double check things with you is a good idea (the maid of honor is a great choice for this) for they may be able to see things that you have missed.

Communication Is Key

Whether it is calling to confirm a reservation or double-checking with the baker to make sure that the cake is going to be done and delivered to the reception hall at the time you’ve requested, communication is the key to managing your wedding. Never assume that people are doing what you have asked them to do, always double check, as it will save you plenty of headaches later on down the line.

And finally, always plan for things to take longer than your list or the vendor themselves tells you they will. Things happen, and if you have budgeted your time too thin, you could end up scrambling at the last minute. Give yourself plenty of time to get everything done, and you will find yourself with fewer headaches as you approach the big day.

How he proposed: He took me out to dinner on our 3 year anniversary, followed by a walk on the beach he got down on one knee to propose.

The Wedding Dress: My dress was clustered with crystals and couture style, with crystal jewelery to match.

The Groom’s Attire: My groom wore a sophisticated black suit with a silver tie and vest.

The Bridesmaid’s & Groomsmen’s Attire: The girls wore a full length black dress, whilst the groomsmen wore suits to match the groom. It was very elegant.

The Wedding Cake: A decadent 3 tier cake, decorated with fresh flowers.

The Flowers: White and cream orchids and roses, bound with white ribbon and crystal pins.

The Ceremony: We had a simple beach ceremony in the beautiful sunshine. It involved readings from family and friends as well as bubble blowing and plenty of hugs after.

The Reception: Our table decorations coordinated with my bouquet and black/silver/white colour scheme.

The Theme: I chose a crystal theme with silver/white/black. It was elegant yet simple.

The Photography: I had a lovely lady called Jo-P do our photography. She was fun and enthusiastic for the entire day!

The highlight of the day: Dancing with my new husband in front of all of our guests.

The Honeymoon: Malaysia and Thailand for 11 nights!

Lauren & Benjamin’s top tips for the unmarried and engaged couple: Use Wedding Gifts Direct for convenience, and research all your wedding day service providers carefully.

This is your opportunity to spoil your guests by wining and dining them and putting on a party of a lifetime! To ensure the reception is nothing short of fantastic start planning now!

Decide on style

There are as many different styles of reception as there are hours in the day.

Your style will depend on:

The number of guests

The atmosphere you want to create

The number of formailities

Type of food

Time of day and serving style

- Sunset wedding followed by pre-dinner cocktails?

- Formal sit-down dinner and dancing?

- Buffet or informal dinner?

- Breakfast?

- Brunch?

- Lunch cocktail party?

- Afternoon tea?

The venue you choose will follow from these decisions.

Choosing the perfect venue

You need to find a venue that expresses your individuality and has the atmosphere you believe best suits your style. Some of your options include:

Four- and five-star hotels

Function centres

Clubs

Restaurants

Sporting venues

Historic buildings

Halls

Cultural venues

Galleries

Museums

National Parks

Gardens

Beaches

Yachts

Marquees

Vineyards

Backyards

And even the zoo

Before you choose:

Ask friends and family for suggestions

Get recommendations from wedding professionals

Flick through Modern Wedding magazine

Check out some of our venues online

Save venues to your scrapbook

Visit their websites

Call the Function Coordinator and ask for a wedding kit

Make a shortlist

Always make an appointment before going to visit a venue. The venue operator should give you a tour, show you menus and tell you about different packages. After you have made your appointment go through our venue checklist and ensure that your possible venue makes the cut.

Whether in Brisbane or Sydney - this directory will hep you discover your perfect venue.

Venue catering

If your venue is providing the catering for your reception, ensure that their caterers can meet your needs. Ask a few questions before you sign the hire contract:

What sort of functions do they cater – cocktail dos, formal a la carte dinners, exotic cuisines, dinner dances?

Are there minimum and maximum numbers for catering?

What are their per head costs?

Can you sample the dishes on the menu beforehand?

How much say can you have over menus, ingredients, presentation and service?

Can you get references from previous clients re the catering?

Will they allow you to come in and look at a function room set up for a dinner or party similar in style to your own?

Can they also provide dinnerware, glassware, table linen, and table decorations?

Do they provide the serving staff and their uniforms?

Are they able to accommodate themed food, presentation?

Can you organise your own floral arrangements?

Outdoor venues

Hosting your party outdoors makes sense if the weather’s warm and you have a lot of guests. But you can’t just set up a party anywhere. You need to consider a number of factors:

Site facilities – are there toilets, shelters, play areas, walkways?

Can guests park nearby, or is there easy access to taxis or public transport?

Is the site easy to find/get to?

Are there any restrictions with respect to maximum numbers, opening and closing times, fire, or erecting staging, marquees and lights?

Are there noise restrictions?

Is the site safe and child-friendly?

Are the grounds reasonably level?

Are there any biting or food-grabbing animals in evidence (e.g. bull ants, seagulls, emus, kookaburras)?

Does the site have good disabled access and facilities?

The fine print

Once you decide on a venue,

Get all the details of the package in writing – signed, witnessed and dated.

Include overtime rates, inclusions and exclusions, restrictions, special conditions, cancellation fees and conditions, and the payment schedule.

You’ve chosen well and negotiated a great package. Now that your reception space is perfect, you can start planning!

Since the recent introduction of many popular photography schools and training programs, there has been an increase in interest as well as opportunity for many aspiring photographers to learn the best wedding photography how to techniques. This increase in interest has also made wedding photography less expensive and much easier for the average person to do.

For those who are interested in learning the best wedding photography techniques for both professionals and amateurs, here are the top five techniques to help you achieve beautiful wedding photographs.

However before we talk about the photography techniques may we just say, that you can never replace a professional wedding photographer who is specialised in their field and talent. So our suggestion is not to ask a friend to do your photography (unless they are a professional). Stick to the ones that know photography best and you won’t be disappointed with your end result.

So where were we?…

1. The Blend of Colors and Light.

Learn how to combine the colors and intensity of the brightness and blend the colors and light together to create the desired result of the photo. Too much light as well as other distracting colors may decrease the photo quality, leading to poor resolution. While this may be fixable using Photoshop, the photograph should be at its highest quality before being touched up with an external computer software.

2. The Camera Angle.

It is also important to find the proper camera angle; many professional photographers prefer the 45 degree angle from below, as it is perfect for a clearer and more attractive photograph. Practice with the couple before the big day, and find out each person’s best angle and most natural poses as well.

3. The Background Choice.

Having the perfect wedding photographs depends highly on the type of background that is chosen. Brainstorm with the bride and groom as to what type of background will make the wedding photo stand-out. In addition, consider taking pre-nuptial shots, inviting the couple to pose in several different spots in order to find the perfect background.

4. The Camera Setting.

Know your camera settings, and how to use them. Make sure to set up the camera to the appropriate setting before the wedding. Indoor weddings require different settings than outdoor weddings, as there is a different light source. Also moving objects and still objects need different settings as well.

5. The Position.

Knowing how to display the subject will affect the photo quality tremendously. It is important to always observe the organization as well as proper subject arrangement before taking the picture. Amateur photographers can arrange the subjects in the wedding photo by size, height or color. Professional photographers, or those who are highly skilled, can combine subjects, vary the subject positions, and use different arrangements to come up with the best possible wedding photographs.

Having poor photo quality in wedding pictures is every bride’s worst nightmare. Make sure proper research is done prior to the wedding day, and practice with the bride and groom in various backgrounds, with different angles and settings in order to achieve the desired effect.
