The Chinese have a very elaborate and meaningful wedding rituals and customs. They are divided into 5 different categories which are “Proposal & Betrothal”, “Pre-Wedding Ritual”, “Wedding Day Ceremony”, “Wedding Night Ritual” dan juga “Post-Wedding Ritual”.

Most of the gifts exchanged and presented symbolises a different meaning. Contohnya, semasa upacara pertunangan ( “Proposal & Betrothal ), pihak perempuan akan menerima  teh sebagai salah satu hadiah kerana daun teh yang tumbuh banyak melambangkan pengantin mendapat cahayamata yang ramai. Token money in the amount of 99 or 999 is ususally given as the number “9″ represents forever in Chinese culture.

In the “Pre-Wedding Ritual”, families will announce the betrothal by giving friends and families “Double Happiness Cake” with the wedding invitations. Pihak pengantin lelaki akan meyediakan barangan dowri seperti yang diminta pihak perempuan dan juga melakukan persiapan untuk rumah pengantin manakala pihak pengantin perempuan akan menyediakan perabot untuk bilik tidur mereka.

During the “Wedding Day Ceremony”, “capping rituals” are performed on both the bride and groom respectively before the groom sets out to the bride’s house. Di sana, pengapit pengantin perempuan akan cuba menghalang pengantin lelaki daripada masuk ke rumah sehinggalah dibenarkan selepas bermain teka-teki dan sebagainya. Only then will the newlywed meet the groom’s parents for the important “Tea Ceremony” with an elaborate feast completing the affair.

Pada malam perkahwinan (“Wedding-Night Ritual”), bilik pengantin akan dinyalakan lilin untuk menghalau roh jahat dan pasangan pengantin akan minum daripada 2 cawan yang diikat tali merah dengan yang disilangkan. This is the official wedding vow in the Chinese culture. The bride will also be offered half-raw dumpling as the pronunciation of “raw” is similar to giving birth and indicates fertility. In “Post-Wedding Ritual”, the bride will have to rise early in the morning and prepare a meal for her in-law family to show she has been trained well.

Cincin perkahwinan boleh didapati dalam pelbagai bentuk, pelbagai rekaan dan warna yang berlainan. Kepada kita rakyat Malaysia, bunga telur ini adalah perkara biasa yang selalu didapati di mana-mana perkahwinan orang Melayu. But just in case you have been living in the Amazons and have no idea what these are, these are the gifts for the guests at Malay weddings which mainly consist of decorated flowers and hard-boiled eggs. Lazimnya orang dewasa akan diberi bunga telur manakala kanak-kanak akan diberi gula-gula.

Although we know the existence of this ‘bunga telur’, not every single one of us understands the meaning it represents. However it is, this ‘bunga telur’ is a must in every Malay weddings. A small token of appreciation and souvenirs for the guests attending the wedding reception.

     Wedding cakes are a must in every wedding. Whether your wedding reception is a fancy flight or just a simple one, the wedding cake will still be a beautiful attraction.

It’s a trend nowadays to have beautiful wedding cakes that simply look too good to be eaten. Most are made from fondant as they are easily crafted and molded into forms. Semakin ramai yang bercita rasa tinggi dan tidak hanya memilih kek buah atau kek yang sarat berkrim sebagai pilihan hati. Mungkin sebelum ini kita tidak pernah mencuba ‘empire cut’ dress kerana berpandangan yang potongan itu boleh membuatkan kita kelihatan lebih pendek tetapi jangan risau. The latest code of practice from the British Standards Institution publish web Accessibility-Code of Practice (BS 8878:2010)

This document extends and improves upon its predecessor, PAS 78: Guide to Good Practice in Commissioning Accessible Website, and is essential reading for anyone intending to create or update a web product.

With a growing focus on accessibility, including the recent launch of the fix the Web Campaign (fixtheweb.net) and measures such as the UK government’s E-Accessibility Plan, developers are being called to take accessibility Plan, developers are seriously. As well as a moral case for making the web inclusive (blind people waste over 30% of their time online dealing with access issues) there are also business and, in many countries, legal cases.

Like its predecessor, the new standard concentrates on the processes, procedures and practice requires creating an accessible web product. It doesn’t discuss coding o technical issues, but does provide reference to relevant standards, guidelines and practice-so there’s no conflict with the guidelines produces by the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative.

The Fine Print

The standard describe in detail the policies and structures an organization needs to have in place to support accessibility, as well as identifying the specific issues to consider at each stage. At first sight, this may look like a lot of extra work, but in reality nearly all of the steps are considered good practice for any web product development.

The information contained within the standard is clear, concise, insightful and pragmatic. It’s well laid-out, mailing it easy to find relevant information. It provides all the parties involved in creation of web product with the information needed to understand the issues, decide how to create an accessible product and, importantly, how to deal with real-world conflict between ultimate accessibility and other market forces.

However, the standard falls short in failing to discuss in sufficient detail the importance of ensuring that new content added to the web product after launch is accessible. It hints that this essential, but doesn’t highlight the issue.

Community of Interest

It’s expected that a community of interest will build around the standard, which will augment and refine the standard, based on new experience, technologies and opportunities. Sadly, at present the real picture regarding accessibility is bleak. Despite legislation having been in place since 1999, a range of report confirm that between 80 and 96% of sites reviewed don’t meet a minimum accessibility threshold.

Problem Solving

In response to the problem, fix the Web launched last year to provide a quick and easy way for disable people to make complaints about inaccessible websites-as well as to introduce a volunteer-led process for those who complaints to be reported back to site owners. “If every web product used the standard, we wouldn’t be needed and could close down”

The new standard is an essential purchase for anyone creating web product, as it provides research into accessibility and best practice, a roadmap showing how to ensure accessibility is built in and a template for recording the decisions made about accessibility, which will help to show god intentions if complaint are made.

What about a portfolio?

If you’re working for an agency, make sure you have permission to showcase client work on your personal site.

-do a couple of site for free to get your hands dirty. They could be you own personal sites, redesign of famous site like Craiglist or eBay, maybe something for a friend. Doesn’t dive to deep or you’ll make promise you can’t keep and get yourself in trouble right off the bat. Keep it simple until you have a few under your belt.

How do I get myself some work experience?

-get an internship to teach you about the ins and outs about the profession. If that doesn’t work, you can always search online forums for work.

-some agencies have internship or pat-time position available. Seek them out and become a code monkey for a while. To become a problem solver, there is no better situation than opening up a document you didn’t create to fix a browser quick or code issue!

Freelance or in-house?

-if you just sitting out, I wouldn’t recommend going freelance. The more people who know you the more it will help in the long run. The easiest way to meet people is to actually work fo an agency or corporation.

Is the money any good?

-salary pretty much depends on the size of the company and the location. London salaries are always much more than the rest of UK. Smaller companies will pay a lot less for graduate than a larger company.

Any other tips?

-strive to be the best at your craft, and never be afraid of a challenge or to take something on that doesn’t quite fit your job description. Find inspiration outside the web and play around with the limits, but always come back to usability and whether the site actually does what it needs to for the client or other purpose.

-apply your own style, and don’t just go with the trend.

-meet as many people as you can in your field, either by attending conference or getting involved in local organization.

-understand that talent alone won’t always get you a job, rather the connection you have developed.

-never stop trying to better yourself. Keep an eye on what everyone else is doing and ensure you don’t get left behind.
