What is this event about?  

Weddings InStyle Valentine’s Day Vow Renewal Ceremony allows committed couples to take part in a romantic declaration of love.

Why is this event-taking place?   This is your chance to tell your significant other just how much you still love him/her as part of a romantic ceremony that will conjure up emotions from your wedding day or civil union.

When does the Renewal of the Vows take place?   Tuesday, February 14th at 5:30pm

Where does the Renewal of the Vows take place?  Weddings InStyle 107 Murray Street in the Byward Market

Will each couple renew their vows separately or as part of the group?  The renewal ceremony will be performed as a group.

Will religion be a part of this event? No. This is not a religious event.

What is the cost to participate in this event?   This is a FREE event.

Do we have to register for this event?   Yes, please pre-register for this event. The chapel will be filled on a first come first serve basis and we will be closing registration once we hit capacity. We would LOVE to have you join our fan page on Facebook too as we will be sharing some your love stories there.

When should we arrive?   We will begin to fill the chapel at 5:00 Couples should arrive no later than 5:15pm. Ceremony starts at 5:30 sharp!

How long will the ceremony take?   The ceremony will take approximately 15 minutes.

Is this a legally binding event?   No, this is simply an opportunity for you to reconfirm your love and commitment to your significant other.

Do we need to bring anything with us?   All you need is to show up with your

significant other and lots of love.

Can we bring guests with us? No, unfortunately space is limited so we are limiting this only to married couples renewing their vows.

The Perfect Wedding Speech

If you're lucky you'll have the honor at least once in your life of being the maid of honour or best man in a wedding. This honour comes with a variety of responsibilities, not least of which is the duty of giving a tribute toast during the reception.

Do you ever notice, that for some people the words just flow and the humour is appropriate, and the speech is really amazing? and then ... there are those who are a little more on the awkward side with public speaking and you just sit and cringe in embarrassment for them.

The good news is that if you have the esteemed honour of standing up at delivering a speech anytime soon, you are not the first person to do this and this wonderful thing called GOOGLE that can help your research words of wisdom.

Here are some tips we thought we worth mentioning.

1. Don't wing it

If you think that you're just going to stand up and magic is going to pour out of you in the moment, you are sadly mistaken. As John Wooden used to say, failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Don't be that person. Put some thought and heart into what you are going to say. Let it be a reflection of the relationship you share with that person you are honour to stand up for.

2. Be respectful

Contrary to what you might see in the movies, being "that person" doesn't go over well at weddings in real life. Trust me! You want to be remembered for the right reasons. Take time to consider not just how you will look, but how your speech might reflect on the bride, groom and their family. I have seen one too many brides just sink into their chairs as the best man tries to be "funny". Be respectful - if all else fails, give your wedding planner a sign to plug the power on the mic - yes, it can be done!

3. Don't give a drunk speech

Yes, it's tempting to head straight for the open bar after the ceremony and picture sessions, but if you want to give a great speech you need to be on your A-game. That means being soberish ...

4. Know your audience

Consider your audience as you write your speech. Incorporating tasteful jokes into your speech is always fun, but careful not to turn it into a roast. Is this a gathering of frat buddies or a five star affair? Also be mindful of the bride and groom. Noone wants to hear about past relationships at their wedding. REALLY! This is truth and I have seen it so many times and it is just tacky and people do remember.

5. Thank all the right people and speak from your heartThis is speech giving 101. Thank the people who made it their mission to make this day happen flawlessly. Thank the bride and groom, the parents, the officiant, the wedding party, the venue and their staff and anyone else who deserves your gratitude. In this way the speech is sort of like winning an Academy Award. Just try not to ramble too much cause there is no music to cue you off the mic.

At the end of the day you need to keep in mind that you are merely a supporting player. It's nice to give a speech that has some sass and humour, but mostly your job is to wish the bride and groom all the best as they start their new life together.

Example of fun & sassy that will surely get a laugh for all the right reasons:

(Groom), take (Bride)'s hand and place your hand over hers.

I want you to remember this moment and cherish it... because this will be the last time you'll ever have the upper hand!

Fix your broken compacts

How to: Fix your broken powder makeup

I’ve lost count the amount of times that I have tossed a broken compact because I thought it was trash and didn’t think that there was any other fix. There is no need to throw your money away on perfectly good makeup!

If you happen to break you powder makeup, you can easily fix it with alcohol (rubbing alcohol :)) and patience!

This works for any kind of powder based makeup, such as bronzers, blot powders, eye shadows, whatever!

As you can see I broke my favorite bronzer - MAC "Refined Golden", and instead of buying a new one, which is now discontinued, I decided to fix it.

All you need to do is add a few drops of alcohol into your broken powder compact. Usually it would be said to use 75%+ based alcohol, but this is because the more alcohol concentrate, the faster it dries. Any percentage of alcohol will do though, because you can just leave it out to dry overnight.

Don't worry about the alcohol staying in the powder and causing your skin to dry out, it will completely evaporate. Alcohol dries very quickly that is why it is recommended for use on new wounds on your body, because it evaporates very fast and leaves little residue. Don’t worry the smell of the doctors office (alcohol ) also goes away :).

So how does it work? - Here are the steps!

• Add a few small drops into your broken powder makeup

compact or casing.

• After you add the alcohol to the broken powder you will notice it seep into the powder causing it to become soft.

• Smudge the soft soaking powder around, making it into a paste-like substance and re-form it by smoothing it out with your finger. You will know exactly what to do!

• You can then smooth the surface out with the bottom of a spoon if you choose to, but remember that it does not have to be perfect to work perfectly.

• Let it dry overnight for best results.

The Hangover ...

We all know what happens on New Years, so here are some tips to help you prepare for the morning after.

The reason why one gets a hangover is that your body - your liver in particular - is not able to process and metabolize the break down products from the alcohol quickly enough. In addition to needing enough enzymes, the liver also needs water to process and get rid of the toxins. When supplies run low, it takes water from other organs, including the brain. This is why alcohol is so dehydrating, and why you can wake up with a throbbing headache (and a dry mouth) from drinking too much."   

"It is thus essential to drink a lot of water while drinking and before you go to bed... it can prevent a hangover or at least lessen one." according to Dr.Frank Lipman

Tips for the day of the big party:

1. Feed your body some healthy proteins and good carbohydrates (like quinoa, fish, chicken breast, vegetables) as your body will need these for fuel the next morning.

2. Drink 4-6 extra glasses of water to be sure you are well-hydrated.

3. Take Vitamin B complex.

Tips for the day after the big party:

1. Avoid getting over-heated which will cause further dehydration. Avoid heavy exercise as well as too much sun exposure.

2. Drink plenty of cool fluids including electrolytes if possible to rehydrate and cool the body down (ex. Gatorade, coconut water).

3. Regular ginger ale can help because people often have low blood sugar with a hangover and ginger also helps with nausea. Low blood sugar is what sometimes causes the shakes.

4. Alka-Seltzer can help settle the stomach while also providing aspirin for pain relief.

5. Go to bed early so that your body can replenish the hormones produced during sleep that you probably missed out on the night before.

B Vitamins that can help you recover from or even avoid hangovers.

Drinking depletes the body of essential vitamins and nutrients. When your system is overtaxed with too much alcohol, it can leave you feeling extremely run down. The high potency B- can help restore energy levels after a night of alcohol indulgence. The body utilizes B vitamins when under stress. Replenishing with a potent B Complex can help you shorten the duration of your hangover and significantly reduce symptoms. :)

If you find yourself having had a little too much to drink here are a few tips to help you avoid getting that nasty hangover:

1. Don't mix your drinks: Try to stick to wine or champagne as these will tend to make you feel less bloated and tired the next day.  

2. On the rocks: If you are going to have something harder, fill your glass with ice first as this will dilute the alcohol content of your drink. Mixers and fruit juices are also a good way to boost the body's sugar levels, which get depleted with alcohol.  

3. Rebalance your system: Take Vitamin B complex and an 1,000 mg Vitamin C tablet with a big glass of water before going to bed. If you can try to have a little snack before heading off to bed - Bananas are a good source of sugar and potassium; they are also a natural antacid as they are high in magnesium, which can help relax those pounding blood vessels causing that nasty headache. Try a pure almond butter, and banana sandwich on toasted 100% sprouted bread.

Perhaps the least healthy choice, but sometimes unavoidable - at times, just a little of last night's poison does the trick.

Hair of the Dog Remedy

1 oz. vodka

2 oz. Clamato Juice

1 dash lemon juice

2 dashes salt - 2 dashes black pepper

2 dashes cayenne pepper

3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce

Stir all ingredients together in a tall glass

Last Minute Ideas for New Years Eve Wedding

Getting Married this New Year's Eve? To help those clever couples put the finishing touches on their NYE weddings here are a few little ideas to help you celebrate InStyle!

Make a coffee station a highlight. This is useful for guests who are not used to staying up late. Consider having an espresso or cappuccino machine set up as well. Include candy sticks to stir the coffee, whip cream and chocolate shavings. Having a dedicated barista is a nice touch for a New Year's Eve wedding.

Set up a party supply table. Pile on noise blowers, party hats, confetti, streamers and even feather boas and funky glasses to use by the guests. The reception hall can be decorated with these colorful party items as well, or can be kept to a classic black and silver theme. As the night wears on the hall will become more and more festive as guests take it upon themselves to play with the party supplies.

Set the stage for a midnight surprise. Have balloons and confetti placed in netting over the dance floor to drop at midnight. Set up a large clock or your fashion your own ball drop to mimic the events playing on a wide screen TV. Mute the TV and allow the DJ to count the seconds with your guests to keep it more personal.

Make sure "Old Lang Syne" is in your DJ's collection and when the stroke of midnight hits, crank up the music and dance the rest of the night away. This will surely be a New Year's Eve that no-one will forget.

Where has the time gone ....

I got a call today from my insurance company congratulating me on 2 successful years of business at my location in on Murray Street. I stopped and thought to myself - my gosh - has it been 2 years already? and because we like to celebrate EVERYTHING InStyle did we really just miss an opportunity to drink champagne? Okay, well that in itself is just wrong, but where has the time gone? seriously?!

I had a specific vision in mind for InStyle and all the related companies that fall under the InStyle brand. Balance InStyle, Weddings InStyle, Events InStyle & new birthed I Do InStyle. Nothing like Weddings InStyle & Events InStyle existed in Ottawa at the time. I saw precisely what I wanted it to look like in my mind.

I called up my friend Fried Kemper who is a broker, and told him the crazy idea I had dreamt up and told him to take me building shopping. He kept trying to convince me on other spaces that were off the beaten path and of course in a more appealing square footage bracket ... but I knew EXACTLY what I wanted, and the blank canvas that I needed to work with. He showed me MANY before I fell in love.

The minute I walked in ... I just knew. This was it!! This is where I would create MAGIC.

Most of the people that walk into 107 Murray think that I clicked my ruby red heels and volia! Instant chic venue! Not the case. I took possession in June and I opened the doors on September 5th, 2009. Let's take a little trip back in history shall we?

It's hard to believe that we have hosted over 100 Weddings & Events in the past 2 years. Weddings and Events are our expertise, this is what we do. We have done the homework so our client's don’t have to. The caterer’s food is tasted, the baker’s treats are savored, the florist’s creativity is inspected, the photographer’s images are gushed over and the DJ’s vibe is heard. So, if you're planning a wedding in 2012 here's what we discovered the top trends to be. 2012 is the year of Romance. From the dress to the decor, think - dreamy, whimsical, soft, THINK love.

Bridal Gowns - What says romance more than Victorian-style. Expect Victorian flair with lots of corsets and soft layered ruffles. Colors are also expanding with this beautiful light sage green and with more muted earth tone colors below. Soft and flowing elegance with textures of colour palettes. Dessert Tables - Gone are the days of only having a wedding cake.Today, couples are offering up their favorite desserts and making them a focal point of the night. Eliminating the DJ and having an "iPod wedding reception" CAN save money, BUT it takes more than just cuing up a playlist to pull it off successfully. Here are a few tips to help you.

We are asked all the time, how couples can save money on their wedding and where they can SAFELY cut costs?

One way to save money on a wedding reception is do-it-yourself music using a laptop, iPod or mp3 player. This can save about $600-$900 on the wedding budget, and also guarantees that the music played is a true representation of the couple and their musical tastes.

“Music is the universal language of mankind”

However, eliminating the band or DJ and simply cuing up a playlist does not guarantee things will go smoothly. After considering if an iPod Wedding Reception will work for you, follow these steps to it pull off InStyle.

Selecting the Wedding Reception Music

Prepare enough music to fill the entire time of the reception, downloading songs for the different parts of the reception, like cocktail and dinner hours, and slow and fast dancing. Also make sure to download special songs for the spotlight dances.

Keep in mind that music played throughout the evening should appeal to most of the guests. Pick songs for the wedding reception from a variety of decades and genres, from slow to fast songs. It’s better to have too much than too little music prepared.

Setting up Playlists

Once downloaded, arrange the music into playlists, and listen to make sure they flow well. In iTunes, go to “Preferences,” select “Playback” and adjust “Crossfade” to make sure one song will seamlessly fade into the next. - This step is CRUCIAL otherwise all the levels will be off and some songs will be louder than others...Basically as the song ends the volume lowers, it's just a way to make things sound better and the transition to the next song smoother.

Suggested Songs for a Wedding Reception Playlist

Depending on what is planned, playlists for the following are needed:

• Cocktail hour

• Introduction of the wedding party

•Dinner hour

•First dance, bride & father, groom & mother

•Dance music that appeals to everyone – more slow songs, oldies &

classics

•Upbeat dance music for later in the evening

•The last song

Introductions and Announcements

Ask a friend or family member in advance to fill the role of the “emcee.” Make sure this is someone who can be trusted. Depending on the formality and size of the wedding reception, this person’s duties would include any or all of the following:

• Introducing the wedding party and anyone giving a toast

• Announcing when it is time for dinner

• Announcing first dances

•Announcing the last song so guests are not caught off guard when the lights go up.

Be sure to give the emcee a script for the introductions, listing in order of introduction each person's role in the wedding, name and relations to the couple of each person.

In advance of the wedding day, create a timeline for the reception, and share this with the emcee, the wedding party and anyone giving a toast. During the reception, let these guests know at least a few minutes in advance when they need to line up for introductions, make their toast, gather for the wedding party dance, etc.

During the Reception

Select someone in advance to help keep an eye on the dance floor and rearrange songs if necessary to keep guests dancing. Having a designated person to do this should discourage other guests from tampering with the music.

Preparing for DIY wedding reception music can take a lot of time, effort and careful planning. However, if pulled off successfully, it can not only save some money but also create many memories for the bride, groom and their guests.

Don't forget the basket of flip flops to keep your guests comfortable AND dancing.

How does one begin to select a wedding officiant anyway? It's so confusing!!! There are ministers, pastors, clerks, rabbis, justices of the peace; officiants who do you choose? Remember your wedding ceremony is much more than "just" a ceremony and whom you choose to perform it will set the tone.

If you have decided to have a wedding ceremony that’s not traditional, you may feel overwhelmed by all the choices that exist; not only what vows to include in the ceremony but who will be performing it.

We are here to simplify things for you.

The first question to ask yourself is what type of ceremony do you want to have? This is an important factor when choosing the officiant to perform your ceremony. The next thing to keep in mind is finding an officiant who who will be open to your ideas. Choosing wisely will make it much more likely that your collaboration will create a meaningful expression of your personality and love.

There are several different types of wedding ceremonies you can choose from:

SPIRITUAL CEREMONY - a spiritual ceremony is an inspirational ceremony that is beautiful and sacred. It is a Divine ceremony, which is universal in content and is not based on any particular religion.

INTERFAITH CEREMONY - an interfaith ceremony or interdenominational is a combination or blend of religions ranging from only some religion to being entirely religious. Interfaith is in essence a respect for and an acknowledgement of all of the many different religious beliefs and spiritual understandings. It is an embracing of the values and traditions of all religious and spiritual paths.

CIVIL CEREMONY - a civil ceremony is a non-religious ceremony. It does not contain religion in the ceremony or prayers. Although it is not religious, it is not lacking of meaning or love. A couple can choose to include an invocation or poem that can be just as meaningful to them as a prayer is to a religious person. This ceremony is also known as a city hall, notary, JP or Justice of the Peace ceremony.

NON-DENOMINATIONAL CEREMONY - a non-denominational ceremony is a ceremony that is not of a particular denomination. In today’s evolving society, interfaith marriages have become very common. Non-denominational ceremonies are also quite popular because they too serve the purpose for the bride and groom who are of different religious backgrounds. In these types of weddings, the wedding officiant can creatively bring in prayers and/or customs that are not offensive to either side.

Your wedding day and ceremony is a magical time so choose an officiant that will focus their energy and efforts to create the perfect ceremony that is a reflection of you as a couple. If this is achieved, then your ceremony will be one that will be remembered and treasured forever!

Weddings InStyle is nestled in the historic Byward Market in downtown Ottawa. Old-world charm meets modern amenities. Your guests will be surrounded with natural sunlight, exposed brick, hardwood floors, and a very New York Loft feel. City Hall – well its City Hall.

Wedding Decor - Flags

Our Wedding Chapel is pre-decorated, private and intimate. We are the opposite of City Hall, so imagine, chic, elegance, style and exchanging vows by candlelight. City Hall does not permit wedding décor or candles and let’s face it – everyone looks better by candlelit!

InStyle!

We are available to perform private ceremonies onsite 7 days week by appointment. City Hall only offers Monday to Friday, between 9-4 Friday evenings, between 5-7 and Saturday afternoons between 1-3. It works on a first come first serve basis and you must wait in the common area where people come to apply for permits and pay parking tickets.
We offer the ability write your own vows or choose from a variety of traditional vows you feel best reflects you as a couple and this is something that we would be honored to help you with. City Hall does not offer custom vows and uses clinical words such as “The province of Ontario” in your vows.
We can accommodate 100 people comfortably. Where City Hall has a 7 person maximum restriction.
We can provide two witnesses if you want to truly elope and surprise your friends and family. City Hall do not provide witnesses.
We offer multi-lingual ceremonies where as City Hall only offers English and French
We offer full service weddings including food, bar, wedding planning and coordination services. City Hall does not permit food and alcohol onsite and are not allowed to make recommendations to other local businesses – I know! Strange?!
Weddings InStyle can be booked for as long as you wish if you would like to have a cocktail reception or formal dinner following your ceremony. City Hall has a maximum time allowance of 30 minutes.  
…. And the number one reason why Weddings InStyle is better than City Hall is that we have a beautiful brides room onsite where our couples can get ready and make their grand entrance to their music of choice. Your only option at City Hall is the public bathroom and you have to forgo the grand entrance as you must wait together on the main level and music is not an option.

Let City Hall take care of your taxes, NOT your weddings! Pass it on!

Wedding Favors

Summer is here and who can't use an extra pair of flip flops?

We know, we know: we are seeing this trend everywhere. But, bear with us, because they’re a really good idea.

Obviously, you want your friends and family to hit the dance floor and dance the night away? after all that is why you either hired a great DJ, trendy band or spend hours making your own special playlists, right? If you want your guests to really bust a move, its best to make sure that they are comfortable to do so. Most ladies feet start to expire in higher heels close to the 3-4 hour mark especially when standing.

Give your guests a good excuse to kick off their shoes, and party with you. And remember, everyone can always use an extra pair of flip flops!

Here's how you can do it inexpensively.

Go to your local dollar stores or Old Navy ( they have summer sales on now )and get a whack of flip flops. To make them look as sweet as the sentiment, get some cute burlap baskets for easy access. Go to Michael's or Winners and buy some complimentary frames and write something sassy and creative like:

On July 23rd I Get To Marry My Best Friend

Friendship isn't a big thing - it's a million little things.

In less than two weeks, I have the honour and the privilege of marrying my best friend of 25 years. We met decades ago at Lisgar Collegiate and have been inseparable ever since.

She is my partner in crime, my champagne girl, my confident, someone who has seen me at my worst and celebrated me at my best. She was my first call when I found out I was expecting and in true best friend form, delivered (literally) 7 months after me telling her my son would need a friend.

We have had sleepovers & sleepless nights of supporting the other thru the dramas of life and early heartbreak. We have been by each other side for all the milestones, our first cars, our first pets, our first loves, our first 'real jobs' our first homes, engagements, children ... and now marriage.

Single life used to mean bubbles & smoked salmon on a patio, talking endlessly about what was going on in our respective lives. We didn't have a curfew and getting up before 10am was unheard of. Then came the next phase in our life ... kids.

It is by chance we met . . . By choice we became friends

Once kids arrived, we spent EVERY morning having home made muffins and coffee & tea and swapping clothes & stories about our new reality. We took turns rocking the others child to sleep so we could enjoy a few moments of serenity. Fridays soon brought a smile back to our faces. It was bubbles & smoked salmon all over again, only this time at home, not on a swanky patio, often in yoga pants not cute little sundresses and Baby Einstein was our music of choice.

Some years later, I decided to venture out into the free enterprise world and create this whole "InStyle" brand. Most thought I was crazy! You are going to quit your corporate job and you are going to what? Start a Concierge company? Here is how I saw things, as a busy corporate mom, I was struggling to get everything that I needed to accomplish in a day done, especially with a small child in tow, I figured I wasn’t alone and needed to do something about it.

5 years later on April of this year I was recognized as being one of Ottawa's Top 40 under 40 in business. To no surprise, Jill was by my side. She always secretly cheered me on, even though I am sure from a distance she had no clue what Balance InStyle was all about.

Years later, after the birth of her second child - I had the birth of another kind. Twins. Weddings InStyle & Events InStyle was born. I decided to upgrade my home office business and take the biggest leap of faith yet ... Become a lease holder in the Byward Market and create a high end Wedding Chapel & Event Space. I knew that I needed my partner in crime to pull this off. So I asked Jill to come and work with me ... 2 years later we are an established business, are both licensed officiants and have the privilege to marry couples some 4-5 times a week.

Jill has been an invaluable part of Weddings InStyle - most of you reading this blog are likely past brides or grooms, couples who are waiting for their big " I Do InStyle" or are vendors or suppliers or friends who knows just how wonderful she is. I am proud to call her my backbone, my best friend.

The best part about creating Wedding InStyle is the fact that I am licensed by the province of Ontario to marry people. What most people don't know, is that I prefer to be behind the scenes, creating, designing, dreaming up our next InStyle blog, contest and running all the businesses in general. Jill has performed ALL of the InStyle ceremonies to date with the exception of outside officiants who frequently perform weddings here as well.

Saturday July 23rd, 2011 @ 4:30pm will be my first ceremony, and what a privilege ... I get to marry my best friend. After 13 years, 2 kids, 2 cars, a cat and a mortgage the day has arrived where Jill will marry her soul mate, the father of her kids Stephane.

I am almost sure that it is NOT generally the officiant who is shedding tears during the ceremony but this is a promise I cannot make. I mean, how lucky am I?

When we share the story of me being the one to marry Jill, the most common statement and question is, OMGosh ... will she marry you? All I can say to that is this ...I have recently found my version of a modern day prince charming, so stayed tuned. We are at the beginning of our story book romance and like with any great love story the happily ever after is usually reserved for the very end.

We are delighted to be able to run a contest in collaboration with the one and only Madeleine Cormier from Chapeaux de Madeleine. Some of you might already know her, but for those who don't she has an adorable store steps away from us in the Time Square Building in the Byward Market.

Madeleine’s hats have received high praise in fashion circles across North America, captured the eye of international critics at L’Oreal Fashion Week, and contributed to a dynamic partnership with Canadian designer Jayn Simpson.
She even designed some fascinators/head adornments that were worn at the Royal Wedding.

The soundtrack for your wedding is a big deal. It sets the mood (classical speaks to elegance and grace, while punk rock screams spunky and different), and can either make or break a party. Whether you’re hiring a six-piece string ensemble, a DJ, a rock band or are planning to load up an iPod with your fave MP3s, follow this handy checklist to make sure you have music in place for all the key moments.

Ceremony Music

Processional

Choose up to four songs or arrangements for your processional to play up to 45 minutes: seating of the parents and grandparents, entrance of the wedding party, and for the brides or grooms monumental walk down the aisle.

Interlude

If you’re integrating ring warming, or unity candle lighting into your ceremony, you may want separate music to play during this silent moment.

Recessional

You’ve shared your first kiss as a married couple and turn to face the crowd. Your officiant announces you, and joyful, upbeat music commences for you to walk down the aisle.

Reception Music

Cocktail Hour

While you’re taking your family or couple photos, the rest of your guests are feeding their stomachs with passed hors d’oeuvres and partaking in your signature cocktail. This time traditionally lasts 45 minutes to an hour, so you’ll need to choose some tunes to get the party started, but not too crazy yet (after all, you two aren’t there, and the party doesn’t really get underway until you return and dinner’s finished).

Introductions

Your DJ or band will introduce you as you want to be known now that you’re married (if either or both of you have changed your names). Then they can introduce the rest of your wedding party. We like the idea of adding short bits of songs to surprise each person, like Fergie’s “Glamorous” for a diva maid of honor or the Pussycat Doll’s “When I grow up” for your flower girls.

First Dance

Your first dance as a married couple is likely one of the most fun songs to choose, as it says so much about you as a couple. It could be the song that you’ve identified as “our song” since the beginning of your relationship, your grandparent’s first dance song or something new you discover while you’re planning your wedding. There’s nothing wrong or right with this decision, but two things to think about: 1) It’s fun to have an original idea that not everyone else uses for their first dance song. 2) If you choose something at least slightly well known and not totally obscure, you can request it from bands and DJs for the rest of your lives on special occasions.

Dinner Music

If you are hosting your guests to dinner, come up with a genre that your band or DJ can select music from, like jazz or old-school country, that will play in the background while everyone dines, mingles and makes their toasts.

Cake-Cutting

Let them eat cake! There’s a host of songs themed to sugar and sweets for your cake-cutting. We like “Sugar, sugar” by the Archies.

Bouquet Toss

Tossing the bouquet music. This time-honored tradition works when there’s an actual bouquet involved—or two. As of late, Beyoncé’s “All the single ladies” song and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls just want to have fun” have been making the rounds at weddings across the country.

Dance the Night Away

If you’re having a dancing portion of the evening (and we highly recommend you don’t miss out on this delight), you’ll need to make two lists for your DJ or band: “must play” and “We will be so upset if you play this.” Make sure you include all your songs that you identify with as a couple, but also think about songs for your parents or grandparents to enjoy (think about surprising them with their first-dance songs from their weddings), music you can dance to with your friends and songs that everyone of all ages can get out on the dance floor and get down to.

The Last Dance

The last song that wraps up the evening. In a blink of an eye, all that planning you worked on for months has come to the send-off (if you haven’t left earlier), and it’s time to go out with a bang. Make sure it’s a good one!
