This is our final episode.

Way back in February or March of 2020, we recorded this episode the week before the pandemic began and we stopped meeting up in person (for obvious reasons). We, like everyone else, figured we could “wait out” the Covid conditions so we started playing a pickup game online to tide us over.

Now it’s more than a year later, we’ve played a few games since that little pick-up we started in March 2020, we completely exhausted our backlog for the podcast, we’re still not sure when we can get back to recording the way we like to, and we’ve all sortof moved on from this game series in our hearts and minds. In spite of how hilarious and wonderful it was to play.

We discussed our options as a group and the Wednesday Night Crew has decided that we’re going to put the podcast on hiatus.

The delay until new episodes will last until we can get back on track with recording and develop a few episodes of backlog.

Thank you all so much for coming along on our hobby journey with us! It’s been a pretty awesome few years letting you guys have a peak into our gaming lives.

In today’s episode we get through round 1 of our first combat session of Genesys RPG, Realms of D&D.

Hal attempts subterfuge to get his way, the rest of the NPCs and Krask take the brute force route, and the casters attempt, with varying levels of success, to do some magic! Meanwhile, the players crack some pretty good jokes.

In this week’s episode shopping continues! The party bought pastries including a magnificent cake. Hal bought a large portion of meat, reportedly as owlbear food, and a cart to drag it around in. He also bought a live chicken for Krask. Rwrarp freaked out a haberdasher when he had Greg retrieve his shiny new wizard hat. And they convinced a snake to show them to a place to stay.

A good time RPing was had by all.

In today’s episode we have a pretty tense series of rounds where Krask is unconscious and being eaten by ghouls. The party spends most of their time trying to figure out how to save the poor dying paladin but most of their plans are thwarted by the Action Economy. His rescue eventually comes in the form of an Owlbear. Not a statement typically applicable to most of my prior D&D games.

In today’s episode, the players decide that it’s time to finish what they started with those ghouls they saw tear up their enemies a few episodes back after they defeated the Flame Skull. And by “finish what they started,” I mean “go in there for the very first time since they saw what happened with the Bugbears who went in there and Greg scouted it out for them.”

They head in there with a decent plan and a reckless attitude. Of course, Krask gets into trouble immediately.

In today’s adventure, the players rescue the last surviving Rockseeker!

Colin considered this a major accomplishment since he was pretty sure they were going to miss this tiny, locked, side room in the dungeon. Not enough of an accomplishment to let the players level-up of course, they still have a lot of this dungeon to clear after all. The deal they end up cutting with the dwarven entrepreneur was also a stroke of genius on their part, so we can chalk this social encounter up as a win for them.

So there’s a fair amount of crosstalk in this episode. We’d been on hiatus for a while so we were excited to see each other and hang out again. I apologize for the sound quality and our lack of professionalism. But we did have a lot of fun, which I’ll never apologize for.

In this episode, the characters loot the bodies of their fallen foes and we have a lot of tangential thoughts and conversations. But there’s a little character building, a little investigation, and some discussion about the world as well.

In this episode, the adventurers, less than stealthy due to a loudly whispered argument and an untimely sneeze, burst into a columned chamber with a giant dwarf statue and a couple bugbears. This generates a little confusion for the party as they were pretty sure that there was a drow in here at the end of last session. They rush in there and… the situation changes rapidly from there.

After their encounter with Mormesk, the characters finally go and investigate the source of the booming sound. What they discover, is truly underwhelming.

In this week’s adventure, the characters start off by camping and having a pretty low key, but potentially frustrating, social encounter with The Guardian. Afterwards, they move on to the second building in this open cave chamber and discover a second, and differently annoying, guardian in the other structure.

After their final triumph over the Flame Skull last week, we move into some exploration of the dungeon again. The players really want to find out what that “Booming” sound is, so they head off in that direction. What they find… is a lovely but horrifying surprise!

While the players handle some repercussions from casting some rather loud spells during the fight, they discover a new danger from another part of the dungeon and come to realize that their trial with the Flame Skull is not over yet.

Remember how last week the players were on fire with jokes? This week the characters are just on fire.

Because Flame Skull.

This is their first major conflict with a spellcaster enemy. We’re not counting the joke of a slaughter that they committed against Glasstaff and the Maglubiyet goblin priest. Those guys were sub-level 3. Chump change. The Flame Skull counts as a 5th level spellcaster. That means 3rd levels spells; the unofficial non-“baby” spells. I’m talking about Fireball folks.

This might be the most tense fight they’ve had since the goblin ambush on the road all the way back in Episode 1 of this series… But not for the reason you’d think.

We discover, and are not surprised to find out, that Zombies are nothing to an Owlbear. We also discover that Uitzash is the true animal handler of the group.

In today’s episode, we have a small time skip at the very beginning of this session. We meet up with the crew in an inn and they’re introduced to Kolton’s new character, the aforementioned lizardfolk paladin, Krask, who makes quite the impression. The players attempt to continue taming the Owlbear who still doesn’t have an official name. Gundren asks the players to go investigate the Wave Echo Cave and is willing to pay them quite a lot of gold to do so. And interspersed within all of this is the characters dealing with the loss of Olo with emotions ranging from sadness to suspicion and uncertainty.
A small disclaimer: We hadn’t seen each other for a few weeks between this recording and the last, so we’re a little silly. Hope you have as much fun listening as we did being goofs!

They make a plan and start making their way back to town… but then some foreshadowing finally goes the way the DM expected.

Today you’ll hear the players save Gebbin from a Grick. Maybe that doesn’t sound like the most dramatic experience in D&D history but considering how low they characters are on class features and resources, it wasn’t the easiest task for them. It was also the source of a good amount of amusement for us a group and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we did. It also gave them an excuse to keep working on taming their new pet Owlbear!

Rwrarp goes on a dungeon delve with a couple Goblins and they investigate a shrine hidden deep within Cragmaw Castle. And Olo goes to talk with the Owlbear! Turns out he can do that… cuz weird homebrew barbarian classes are weird. Cool… but weird.

In this week’s adventure the characters manage to save Gundren Rockseeker from Cragmaw Castle! Then they interrogate a Doppleganger and get a surprisingly small amount of information out of him, mostly due to their own unfocused conversational tactics. … On second thought, it’s not that surprising after all.

This week is Episode 29, Session 14 Side B, for the Lost Mines of Phandelver, the beginners adventure presented in the Dungeons and Dragons Starter Set.

Today you’ll hear Alex play Hal, a level 3 Firbolg Bard. Kaetlyn play Uitzash, a level 3 Warlock in service to a dark patron. Kolton is playing Olo, a level 3 Tortle Barbarian. And Matt is playing a level 3 Grung Wizard named Rwrarp (pronounced like a frog noise). Colin was DM’ing this game. We are using the Milestone leveling variant in this adventure.

In today’s episode we have some combat to finish! And boy was it a doozy. There was a Dendarian Religious Revival, the threat of an untamed owlbear every turn, goblins betraying their kin, the introduction of a cute little puppy named Snarl (you’ll meet him later), some very good spell and ability use by Hal and Rwrarp (you’ll see exactly what I mean those happen), and so much more.

This was a really good combat, Listeners. It was made all the better because the foes that the heroes were facing kept coming after they’d been alerted by the sounds of fighting and the actions of the other NPCs. I was really happy that these encounters kindof spilled into each other one after another but that they didn’t all combine into one giant melee. This allowed the tension of the fight to remain high as the characters were hit by waves of enemies one after another with no time to rest in between and “reset” but it also didn’t overwhelm the players with a huge swarm of enemies that would have been insurmountable all at once.

This really enhances the climax of the battle and forces the players to use some abilities they might not have otherwise. You’ll see what I mean.

Also, there’s a lesson towards the end of this episode about carefully considering how your character’s spell effects impact the world beyond simply thinking about how they deal damage to enemies in a Rules as Written kindof way. To avoid spoilers, we won’t say anything more (just wanted to tease the end one final time). We might do an essay about that later on in the week, but we’ll see if Colin can find the time and motivation to do that. We’ll just leave you with the Pun-O-Meter for now.

This week Colin is forgetful so he’s about to make some mistakes about the fictional position of things.

In the actual game though, we start things off, as is tradition, with our recap and then with a roll for initiative! In the ensuing conflict, the crew’s new Owlbear gets set on some Hobgoblins and a cult of Maglubiyet arrives! Goblin is pitted against goblin. Spellcaster slings spell against spellcaster! It’s a chaotic time, but a good time.

Oh, the party also realizes that they need to tame the Owlbear before it’s going to be their reliable pet. So that was fun for them to figure out.

In this weeks adventure we come back from a long hiatus as recorders and players of the game. So we take a little bit of time to refocus and get back on track with what we were doing before and our synopsis was strikingly good considering how long it had been. The players then decided that a frontal assault on the castle was in order! This resulted in some immediate consequences… Such as Olo and Wrarp being viciously attacked by the not-so-strangely territorial inhabitants. We also meet some of those inhabitants and the guy in charge has an item that Olo desperately wants.

In today’s episode we were a little pressed for time because Colin forgot the charger for the laptop the Wednesday Night Crew records the game on so there’s a little bit of tension at the beginning of the session surrounding timeliness. In the fiction, however, our band of adventurers faces down their second major foe; The Wizard, Glass Staff. There’s banter and games while they try to outmaneuver each other but then? It’s Initiative. He’s got a few tricks up his sleeves… will they be enough to confound the heroes?

In today’s session, Uitzash wakes up from being unconscious after the Redbrand fight back in Session 04. She hunts down the rest of the party and finds out what they’ve been up to since she’s been out of action. Once they fill her in, they find out that she’s surprisingly OK with this whole situation!

There’s still some pretty macabre jokes in this episode since we’re dealing with the aftermath of the “Dinner Service” incident, but the jokes aren’t nearly so dark as they were previously. The content warning is still in effect but it’s definitely toned down from where we were in last week’s episode.

In today’s service… I mean Session… the characters enact their plan to attack and kill the Red Brands. With food! It’s a delicious plan that’s executed with a sumptuous amount of spicy jokes and laughs! I loved this sequence; it was very fun to play out and I hope that you guys enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed playing it out.

A quick content warning for this episode: casual discussion of murder, casual depiction a murder scene, and raucous comedy/jokes surrounding this content.

The characters in this series are decidedly not good people but the players have a small amount of dissonance with this situation and didn’t realize how easy it would be to casually kill a bunch of people all at once if they put their minds to it for a very short amount of time. None of the players or the DM had their feelings hurt by the discussion, nor was anybody angry at the table; we’re all having a great time because this is our table culture. If you take issue with speaking lightly about or casually making jokes about taking human life, then this might be a good episode to skip.

Also, please forgive a small issue with the audio quality. You can definitely hear one of the cast member’s children crying in the background of some of the recording and it was not possible to remove it during the edits. In today’s episode, the characters finish up their first adventure by figuring out how to carry all these Lion Shield branded boxes and then make their way into Phandalin! It’s a cozy little village built on the ruins of an older, and larger, mining operation. The mining still continues, but the prior denizens disappeared for some reason or other. Their first stop is to get paid and to upgrade some equipment, but not before getting into some inter-party intrigue and re-outfitting their new goblin companion Gebin!

The characters finish up their adventure in the inn, get one final check-in with Elsa, resign themselves to the reality of the amount of loot they’ve been able to acquire along the way, and discuss the future of the inn with the Innkeeper before going back to town where they finally level up! We go through the town procedure and have some fun talking about what might come next for these characters and then we conclude the adventure!

Today the group of adventurers continues the struggle against the Kobolds!

However… an old foe arrives near the end of an early conflict in this session and the Kobold Matriarch, Sawback, and her guards are forced to deal with this new threat directly, giving the band a much needed opportunity!

In this episode the characters deal with a number of Kobold threats including the return of the Inn Keeper’s Captives and the Kobold Matriarch! How will they fare against such impressive foes!? Probably pretty well, right? They’re just Kobolds after all.

The players make a quick plan about how they want to progress knowing what they found out at the end of last session; that there are kobolds holding some bizarre form of punishment at the end of the tunnel they’re hiding in.

They decide to go in there and show those Kobolds what’s for! So, choosing the tactic that’s worked so far, they run headlong into a Drive Off conflict! You’ll have to listen to see what happens, but I can tell you right now that we eventually move into our very first Kill conflict. Super important moment in the game that we treat rather unceremoniously; but what else is new?

The heroes sally forth into the dungeon yet again! They discover, very quickly, one of the inns folk; the Inn Keeper in fact! And then promptly choose to alienate him! Hurray!!! Flashback to Episode 1 or 2 where they were told by the little girl Elsa that he’s evil and that he’s intending to cook the human captives for the kobolds in exchange for his own life… Super scummy. Then they make camp. How will this whole situation pan out? What else will they find in the cave? Where is that horrific screaming coming from!?

The adventurers proceed deeper into the caves while avoiding the spider, meet some kobolds, and make a complete mess of the camp that they find. The players generally are a mess of digression and hilarity, as we have come to expect them to be at this point.

In this episode the characters find a spoopy tunnel filled with spider webs and feel like it’s a bad idea to go by it and also a bad idea to press on without making camp again. So they found a new place to make camp and then played the camp game!

In this episode, we hear as our heroes decide how to tackle making it across that chasm that we introduced a couple episodes back. There’s quite a bit of debate about the best method but they eventually come up with, and then execute, a pretty good plan! Dungeon delvers of old would be proud! *single tear*

In this episode, we hear the protagonists dilly-dally about fighting the Stone Spider they’ve run into, they engage the conflict mechanics (eventually), and at some point we start up the sick Sack Rhymes again.

Really we’re just here to make jokes about the inventory mechanics with Torchbearer, so in that way, we’re winning.

In this episode of the adventure, we hear how the protagonists go through camp activities, including finally getting rid of some of their conditions and recreating their ruined map before venturing back into the room with the fissure in the floor. They then ran into a danger of the dungeon that they’ve been seeing signs of but had not actually run into yet. That creature caused them to immediately reconsider every decision they were making.

We ended the session, as always, by giving out awards!

In this episode the adventurers continue their adventure through the caverns below the Inn. They discover just how dark and foreboding the place truly is. The brave fools then discover an obstacle in their path and another sign that points directly at giant spiders living in this deep place… And that’s all before they even get to make camp.

In this episode the meta discussion continues! Because the players are still recovering from the really rough time in session one and Jimmy fell through the floor at the end of the last episode as a result of a twist. Nilo nearly has a catastrophe, the party suffers a very terrible set-back, and then they deal with the fallout of Jimmy’s twist from his failed cartography roll. We cap off the night with awards and have some talks about how tough they are to give out.

In this episode we have a lot of meta discussion because the players had a really rough time in session one and needed to regroup. We talk about the current situation that they’re in, the rules that we’ve encountered and needed clarification on, and begin adventuring through the dungeon once more after the group decides that they need to get out of the Inn’s cellar and back up into the Inn proper to scavenge for provisions! This goes poorly… Huzzah!!!

At the beginning of this episode, you’ll hear the Crew use James D’Amato’s Ultimate RPG Character Backstory Guide to help them flesh out their group dynamic a little bit! The book is full of fun prompts and activities to help flesh out character backstories for any level of play for fantasy adventure games and they thought it would be fun to use it for this series. You’ll hear them go through three of the activities for “low level” characters and you’ll see that these activities are fast, fun, and engaging.

James doesn’t have an special site or online shop where you can buy his book directly from him, so you’ll just have to buy it wherever you usually buy your gaming books!

Once that’s done (around the 30 minute mark), the Crew gets right into the action and facing the party’s first formidable foe… a broken staircase! Seriously. Hello listeners! Legends of the Five Rings has come to an end which means that we’ll be starting a new series next week!

The Wednesday Night Crew is excited to say that we’re gonna be presenting Torchbearer by Thor Olavsrud which was Matt’s pick in our rotation!

This game is similar to Mouse Guard, but a little more mechanically robust. Also similar to Burning Wheel, but a little less mechanically complex. We wanted to give it a try since it would give us a full view of the Burning Wheel system (except for Burning Empires, of course).

Content and tone wise, the game is a dungeon delver so it’s styled in the vain of old school Dungeons and Dragons games (right down to gaining XP for bringing back treasure instead of fighting monsters) or the Darkest Dungeon video game but without all the Lovecraft influences. Light and carrying capacity are emphasized mechanically in this game (which we’ll talk about in the episodes at length) and fighting monsters to the death is disincentivized (unusual for this type of game in the modern gaming landscape).

Colin ran the adventure from the back of the rulebook, Under the House of the Three Squires, and the players had an excellent time! As you all might have guessed, we record our game sessions way in advance.  This is mostly a byproduct of the amount of time we record for and then the size of our episodes.  So we had a lot of backlog and therefore a lot of time for Colin to forget some stuff before editing this series.

So remember when we said that the crowning achievement of this series was episode 10?  And that we were incredibly bummed that we lost it? And how a couple weeks ago Kaetlyn went through the trouble to re-record the lost material for all of you fine listeners?  Well… That seems to have not really been necessary because Colin forgot some stuff before completing the edits on the series.

Some of that extra recording Kaetlyn made was recap material from before the prologue gap and was meant as a refresher for where some of the characters were and what they were doing before we got back to the “current” story line.  Some of it was Jun’s story.  And some of it was meant to get you guys up to speed on what had happened in the mass battle so you wouldn’t be completely lost when we continued the series.

The Good News: Jun’s story and the RP scenes surrounding it, were (apparently) on the last recording session of the series and were not lost.  In fact, they’re in the recording that you’re about to hear right now!

The Bad News: We already spoiled the reveal of this story with Episode 10 Side A.

Shiba goes to a party for the Empress and meets a mysterious person (who the audience and the players might recognize from somewhere) and the Cranes deal with their Jun situation by creating even more drama!

In this episode you’ll hear us get a little loopy as we finish up our marathon of Mass Battling. Spoilers: We finish the Mass Battle by the end of this installment and we were very happy to reach the conclusion when we did!

As with last week, we wanted to say that the Mass Battle rules from Fantasy Flight Games is pretty crunchy by our standards so you’ll definitely hear us engage in some table chatter about rules throughout the recording. Colin has, again, done what he can to limit the amount of unnecessary or irrelevant talk (and talk about die rolling) to keep the podcast more listenable for you guys. Some of the information discussed was relevant to the ongoing narrative, so it stayed in because it was important. And some of it was funny, so it passed muster by virtue of comedic levity! Just know that he has done what he can to save you from the worst of it.

Last week we ended with the close of the story of Funaki, a Unicorn Leader, and this week you’ll hear us talk quite a bit about Baki, a Crab Leader who we had introduced in the tragically lost Session 10 Incident. In this episode he gets a little more screen time since our good girl Funaki was no longer there to capture our attention at the table.

In this episode you’ll hear the very important synopsis of the events of Session 10 but also the continuation of the aforementioned Mass Battle. We do jump immediately into round 3 of that battle but the turns we’d taken so far were included in the Session 10 Synopsis and Colin has provided a quick and dirty run down of the rules system that we followed to enact that battle as well so you’re not completely lost as to what the crew is doing immediately as they start up the show.

The Mass Battle is pretty crunchy by our standards and there’s a good amount of die rolling and some table chatter about rules throughout but Colin has done what he can to limit the amount of unnecessary or irrelevant talking to keep the podcast more listenable for you guys. Regardless of the amount of rules, there were several moments in this Battle that when viewed together created their own beautiful story and we felt that letting you guys hear how the system let us build those moments was better than just doing a synopsis of the Battle. This was a serious consideration since it took half of Session 10 and all of Session 11 to complete. You guys are in this for the long haul with us, so strap in!

You have no idea how disappointed we are to have to share this news with you all or how sad it made us to realize that this was the reality that we live in. Session 10 was basically the crown jewel of our L5R series for reasons that will be made clear later. In order to be able to bring you the rest of the story of the Samurai we’ve been talking about for some weeks, we’re looking for an alternative method than the original recording to bring that story to you! Both for the current timeline and the prologue!

But in order to do that we need to take a week off.

This will allow us to make the appropriate arrangements so that we can get you an episode that meets our desires as storytellers and your standards as our listeners. You will hear that story, even if it isn’t as we told it at the table the first time… you’ll get the story…

A quick note on the quality of today’s episode; Elspeth and Kolton were Skyping in with a poor network connection which caused us to have a great deal of difficulty hearing them at the table and impacted the audio quality.  I have cleaned it up as much as possible, but the crew apologizes about the issues in getting clear audio from them throughout the episode today.  Additionally near the end of the recording there was a thumping sound. That was me. With a pen. I am sorry. I won’t do this again.
