This past Friday night my family and I had the chance to have dinner at the new Willow Grove Mad Mex. We've eaten there once before and enjoyed it so this second time around cranky geek hubby and I were excited to try other items from their menu. Elebelly is quite the picky eater, so we went with something safe for her...a cheese quesadilla. That was a winner.

We went what we hoped was early enough to beat the crowd...around 5:30pm. But I guess since it's a new spot, the happy hourer's were there in full force. The parking lot was packed and I would say that's one of the biggest pit falls. The wait was surprisingly not too long for a Friday night and we were seated within about 20 minutes. The service at Mad Mex was good. Our waiter was nice, but it was hard to hear anything as we were seated near the bar area. The food was good, but I kind of hoped it would have presented better...you could kind of tell they were having a very busy night. All in all, we had another good experience out at Mad Mex.

Mad Mex is the kind of place you can go with friends for a great margarita, for a date night, or with the kids. And it won't break the bank either...prices are reasonable. I would suggest bringing the kids on a less busy night (maybe during the week). Looks are deceiving from the outside...you can't tell how big and open the place is. The patio area will surely be a hit this spring / summer.

A ray of sunshine...

It's rainy here in the Philly area. This photo is actually one taken in the Finger Lakes region of New York last September, but reminds me of what our weather has been like today. It's also a good reminder that behind those clouds there is a ray of sunshine somewhere...rain is only temporary. And I'm actually pretty thankful for it today because the garden was needing it.

Family movie day a preview of CARS 2

This past weekend we were invited to an advanced screening of Cars 2.

With a five-year old who loves movies and acting out scenes from them, we were happy to make it our family movie day. E has a knack for memorizing tunes and lines from shows and movies, which leads me to believe she may be a future drama club member.

Cars 2 is a 3-d movie and E kept her glasses on and eyes fixated to the screen every single minute. This is another one of those movies that not only entertains the kiddos but parents as well. It was a non-stop movie with lots of fast cars and a great story line on the importance of friendship and being your true self.

Cars 2 is due out in theaters Friday, June 24th.

Cranky Geek husband and IT Survival Guide book

I don't typically review books or products that aren't related to simplified living, parenting, organic gardening, etc. But recently I was contacted by author David Papp and found the concept of his book intriguing and something I knew my Cranky Geek hubby would appreciate.

CG hubby has been in the IT (Information Technology) field for well over ten years and loves his career. He's always reading, studying, keeping current on all things IT. So he was happy to take a peek at the IT Survival Guide - Conquering Information Technology in Your Organization.

While I didn't get a formal book report from CG hubby, he did mention this under 100 page book was an easy read (he read it on his train commute in about a day or two). CG hubby also mentioned there were some very valid points regarding the IT industry and disconnects he's seen in his current and past organizations. He did highlight some points that I wanted to quickly share:

"Business owners and executives need to know what it means for their businesses if IT disasters occur."
"IT systems make or break organizations every day...taking the time to invest in your IT infrastructure and system is crucial..."
"...the more aligned an IT system is with the overriding directives of the organization, the higher will be the chance of organizational success."
"IT should be an asset, not a liability, for your organization. Stop running from fire to fire, and make the choice to invest in good IT practices."

I really believe that IT leadership (all organizational leaders) should read this book. It seems like a short and simplified guide on how to better understand the importance of IT in organizations and offer explanation on the reason it needs to be more of a partner in organizational happenings and not just a separate, overlooked entity.

At home veggie gardening

Ah, it's spring here in the mid-atlantic and I've got at-home gardening fever again...even if my green thumb is a bit spotty still.

No, my at-home garden does not look like this one, but I imagine it looking like that or the photo below it one day :)

To me at-home gardening is more than a hobby. It's a way for me to get the fresh air, sun and exercise I crave, but also a way for me to teach my daughter that we can (and should) try to live more sustainably each day - providing the family with vegetables (and hopefully this year berries) that we don't have to buy at a store. There is huge value in being able to plant a seed and watch it grow into something edible (and more tasty than store bought) with your child(ren). I see how excited my daughter gets when she she's green things sprouting from the ground or when the flowers start blooming. It is something worth all the dirt under my finger nails and mud on my shoes.

I've been pretty lax about blogging here on weeBgreen lately. For good reason, though. I've been training for my first 10-mile race coming up in early May and have had to turn off the switch on other interests to stay laser-focused on my fitness goals. Hey, I had back surgery a little over a year ago, so being able to run at all let alone 10-miles is HUGE for me. I'll also be training for my first sprint duathlon in the end of May. Yikes!

Anywho, I plan to track the progress of my at-home gardening experience this year more consistently. For personal reasons I want to see if our garden fares better this year compared to last. But I also just want to share with others my experience and prove that even someone who's had bad luck keeping house plants alive can produce edible, yummy vegetables in their own garden. Here in Philadelphia we're still experiencing iffy weather, even though spring has officially sprung. We're literally getting sleet as I write this. With that some of us may still be working on getting rid of those wintry chapped, raw lips. We were recently asked to review washdrops™ wash & shine solution and see how it worked on our truck. We are a one car family for now and taking good care of our truck inside and out is important to us...it's been so good to us the last six years.

So I was happy to test out an at home car washing solution that was created with the environment in mind. I have to admit, I'm not big on washing my car at home - I'm a little lazy in that respect - but with the help of my "cranky geek" husband, we successfully tested out this product. And look how shiny our little truck was afterwards!

Pros of washdrops™ are obviously it's efficiency and environmental aspects. You only need one gallon of water and 3 capfuls of the solution to wash your car (we used a couple more capfuls because we have a truck). washdrops™ is formulated so that there is no need to rinse, there is no run-off of water/chemicals (which is compliant with the EPA Clean Water Act). When you're done washing your car you can safely dispose of the dirty water in a flower bed or on your lawn (it contains non-hazardous materials).

The main con we found was that we had to add a little more solution than instructed (but it is noted on the bottle that may be necessary for larger cars/trucks). Other than that we were really happy with the end result.

If you have a car fanatic in your family, it might be a good holiday gift for them!

This past Friday I had the opportunity to be one of the first people to see the sunrise in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Sarah from Genesis Moments and the Editor of the The Phoenix, Leann, shared a hot air balloon ride with me and some other lucky passengers. This was one of those "bucket list" experiences and I'm so thrilled to have had the opportunity to ride along (thanks Sarah and Stan from US Hot Air Balloon). Check out Sarah's video of the ride. But really what this flight was all about was to share the idea of giving the gift of an experience this holiday season. Don't we have enough stuff? What sort of lasting memories will a toy or new gadget bring? Probably none.

It's a unique way to get a birds-eye view of the environment around you and see things you would never see on the ground. We flew over several farms, saw deer running through fields, and got to see the sun come up over the horizon.

This past weekend my family and I were invited to spend the morning at the Please Touch Museum and its store to celebrate Neighborhood Toy Store Day thanks to Astratoy.org.

We're members of the museum and love how close it is to home and other fun attractions in the Philadelphia area. We also love their eco-friendly initiatives and the fact that they restored the beautiful Memorial Hall to what it is today...a fun-filled, educational and interactive museum for young children. Norah Jones' new musical collaboration...Featuring!

Norah Jones music is always a great choice when I need some quiet, relaxing tunes, or tunes that are not run of the mill, constantly played on the radio. Which is why I was excited to hear on the release of her collaboration cd, ...Featuring!

This album is just that...relaxing and intriguing because of her creative collaborations with a wide range of artists from various genres. We listened to it in the car with our four-year-old and just as I suspected, she was well entertained with the "girl songs". Some of the songs on the album would be great for nighttime relaxation or even getting little ones to bed; they are soothing and not overpowering. I've always been a fan of OutKast and Ryan Adams, so I was pleased to see them featured here. Not everyone will be a fan of this album, but anyone who is a Norah Jones fan (or fan of those featured on this collaboration) should definitely check it out. It's worth a listen!

When a good home garden goes bad...

Our home garden here in the suburbs of Philadelphia was looking pretty darn good in the beginning...

...but with a lot of hungry squirrels and birds it has taken a beating. Our broccoli is no longer there; just the remains of a stalk that needs to be pulled. Our large beefsteak tomatoes have been a delicacy of choice for pesky squirrels and so was our lettuce. It could be rabbits too but I haven't seen a single rabbit lurking anywhere near the garden. Squirrels on the other hand have been running rampant.

I needed to do something to attempt to keep the beasts at bay; so we could at least harvest and enjoy some of our homegrown goodness. So I searched online for hours; watched several YouTube videos and then paid a visit to my local garden store. I knew I wanted to do something humane of course, but wasn't sure what would really work.

My local garden center has the best, most helpful people. They helped explain the options and ensured me that what I was choosing wouldn't harm the squirrels, bunnies, birds or whatever has been feasting in our garden. And it is safe for the plants too; not that we'll be spraying this cocktail directly on the plants, though!

So we're two days into post pest control spraying and it seems to be working. Basically the mixture is some organic ingredients and oil that together make the most horrific smell I've come across to date. So if it doesn't repel squirrels and other critters; I don't know what will! Stay tuned!

Recently I've had the pleasure of meeting some really interesting Philadelphia green professionals through on and offline networking. Vera, the founder of Lavenders Body Care Clinic in Conshohocken is no exception. I was happy to hear of Vera's new establishment, and look forward to visiting someday soon. She was gracious enough to answer some questions I had about her business and the story behind Lavenders.

What led you to open your spa in Conshohocken?

After some research of areas to open, I realized that Conshohocken didn't have anything to offer in regards to spas. The town is adorable, the people are really nice and welcoming and have been very generous with me. Plus, I have worked on the Main Line for 7 years and didn't want to move too far so I could keep my existing and loyal clients.

How long have you been open?

Officially since June 2nd at this location. I have been in Conshohocken for three years already, but have recently just expanded.

What are your top 5 services offered to clients?

Massage always takes the cake on this one. Then there is Lavenders Signature facial. The entire facial basically is customized to your specific skin needs and is finished off with a collagen fiber mask. Leaving your skin silky smooth and very refreshed. We also also offer 'Spa Rituals' which are the spa packages, like the Breakfast in Bed. It comes with a facial, body scrub, body wrap, and mani/pedi. This time of year bikini waxes rule so we are busy with those all summer and of course your mani's and pedi's are mainstays.

What makes your spa unique and earth friendly?

The spa is unique because there is such an inviting sense like you've just walked into your best friends home.

It's earth friendly because all of the 'Spa Rituals' and some of the nail services use organic natural ingredients. For example, in the Breakfast in Bed ritual, the body scrub is made with Coffee grounds and shea butter and the body wrap has honey powder and egg white powder, and orange essential oils, just to name a few things. Some of the facials use organic masks which are fragrance free and dye free. The Ecofin Paraffin Alternative is an eco-friendly alternative to paraffin. Petroleum, fragrance, and dye free, and it is also Biodegradable. There is also a good amount of retail that is organically based.

Outside of your business, do you have tips on how to live more sustainably day to day?

Personally, I have a vegetable garden that I enjoy quite a bit, I recycle as much as I can and use Earth friendly cleaning products. I try to buy locally to support the local community and enjoy the farmers market that is here in Conshohocken on Fridays.

What else would you like people in the area to know about you and your business?

Well, it's nice to know that we are open 7 days a week. We really care about your input and always want to put our best foot forward and we want our spa to be the place where you want to come. Even if it's just to relax in a chair for some quite time.

Book review - The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book

Author Monika Mira contacted me to review her new book The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book. Because this book is highly educational and interactive, I was happy to share it with my daughter and learn about a piece of our planet I don't know much about; Hawaii's coral reefs and the fish that make their home there. It's also an additional resource for our earth-friendlier lifestyle transformation.

Elebelly really enjoyed exploring the fish in The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book (video commentary coming soon!) and although we haven't even gotten near finishing reading about the different species of fish, she's been having a blast coloring in some of them so far! And what made the exploration of this book even better is that June 8th was World Oceans Day. This special day reminds us why we should celebrate our oceans:

Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
Helps feed us
Regulates our climate
Cleans the water we drink
Offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines
Provides limitless inspiration
