That cooling blanket of gray creates perfect conditions for hiking, especially at these three Malibu spots. It’s the fog days of summer!
Totally Charmlee
Visiting a place with a lilting name like Charmlee Wilderness Park you’d be right to have high expectations, and you won’t be disappointed. Charmian and Leon Schwartz owned the land in the 1950s, combining their first names to dub the property Charmlee Ranch. Alas, the ranch went from charmed to charred when a 1956 wildfire destroyed their house. What remains is gorgeous terrain that’s yours to explore. Hike or mountain bike along the 9-mile network of mostly level trails in the 532-acre park (map), and you’ll travel through shaded glens, where the coast live oaks and boulders look as if they've been arranged by a Zen master’s hand. Patches of monkey flower linger into the late spring, even as Charmlee’s huge central meadow has faded to a pale summer gold. With its opera box perspective from 1,450 feet above the coast, Charmlee’s real highlight is an ocean view that’s especially spectacular as the fog begins to lift. An overlook on the Lower Loop Trail (off East Meadow Trail) looks out on lines of foaming waves surging toward Zuma Beach, and down the coast all the way to Point Dume.

FOODIE BONUS: Drive a few miles up the coast and hang with the surfers and bikers at Neptune’s Net, 42505 Pacific Coast Highway; (310) 457-3095, for legendary fish-and-chips.

Charmlee Wilderness Park is located four miles inland from Pacific Coast Hwy. at 2577 Encinal Canyon Rd.; $4 parking. Maps are available at the entrance and offer more details than the online versions. Dog-Friendly!
Activity: Hike ,Dog-friendly

Region: Los Angeles

Soulful Solstice
The big highlight in Solstice Canyon is the ruin of Tropical Terrace, an elaborate Mid-Century Modern home and gardens destroyed by wildfire in 1982. Most people reach Tropical Terrace on the leisurely up-and-back walk along Solstice Canyon Trail, but the best approach is to hike the more challenging Rising Sun Trail (map) for a roughly 3-mile loop. The trail travels along a ridge, with views of the imposing “Darth Vader House” (it definitely resembles you-know-who), and looks back toward the ocean while rising 500 feet above the canyon. In about 1.5 miles, you get your first glimpse of Tropical Terrace, which from above looks like some ancient ruin overtaken by jungle. Designed by celebrated architect Paul Williams, the 1952 house also features walkways and bridges that access a grotto-like series of pools, and, hidden just across the creek, a replica of Lourdes’ Shrine of the Virgin Mary. On the way back via the Solstice Canyon Trail enjoy the shaded forest of sycamore and coast live oak, and look for the Keller House, a stone cabin that dates to 1865.

TIP: For a longer hike (and more ocean views), take the 3.9-mile Sostomo Trail/Deer Valley Loop, which begins from the Solstice Canyon Trail near Tropical Terrace.

Solstice Canyon is located just inland from Pacific Coast Hwy. on Corral Canyon Rd.(map). If the parking lot is full, try turnouts along Corral Canyon Rd. Bikes allowed on Solstice Canyon Trail. Dog-Friendly!
Activity: Hike ,Dog-friendly

Region: Los Angeles

The Other Zuma

Crowds flock to Zuma Beach on a regular basis, but less than two miles away Zuma Canyon remains an unspoiled, natural haven. Zuma comes from the Chumash word for abundance, and what’s most abundant in the canyon is the epic Santa Monica Mountains scenery. For a great 4-mile loop hike, head up Zuma Canyon Trail (map) for a short distance, then follow signs for Zuma Loop Trail. This trail climbs along a ridgeline with views over the lush riparian forest of willow, sycamore, and black walnut that fills the canyon floor. It drops through stands of twisting coast live oak and rejoins the main trail, where you’ll turn right and briefly continue beneath a canopy of sycamores to Canyon View Trail. Climbing steadily, the trail gains about 700 feet as it switchbacks through expanses of chaparral and coastal sage scrub, with bigger and bigger ocean and canyon views emerging the higher you go. Atop the ridgeline, continue on Ocean View Trail for more Pacific panoramas before returning to the canyon floor.

Zuma Canyon is located at the end of Bonsall Dr. off Pacific Coast Hwy. (map). And Zion National Park might just be its matinee idol. With soaring red and white cliffs, hanging canyon gardens, secret water holes, and miles of hiking trails, the park invites more than just a day’s visit. Here's a game plan for exploring one of the Southwest's most dramatic wonders.
Narrow Escape
If you think getting wet and wild only happens river rafting, you haven’t hiked one of Zion National Park's most famous routes—the Narrows. You’re going to want waterproof boots or neoprene footwear to do this right (see preparation details below). The Narrows is a walk, and a wade—and sometimes an unexpected swim!—in the Virgin River. Canyon walls, sometimes only 20 to 30 feet apart and rising higher than 1,000 feet, flank you the entire way. Day hiking the Narrows requires approaching it from the bottom (aka, the Bottom-up Day Hike), starting from the Temple of Sinawava. Start on the Riverside Walk, a 1-mile paved trail to the ultimate adventure point, the Gateway to the Narrows. Ready to see more? You’re gonna have to get wet! Put your hiking sticks in front of you and work your way up the river. At 1.5 miles you’ll reach Mystery Canyon Falls—a 110-foot cascade. The marquee attraction is Wall Street, reached at about 3 miles (on average, it takes people 2 hours to get there). A wander on Wall Street makes for a dramatic photo op: the walls skyrocket to 1,500 feet. Ambitious (or amphibian!) types can continue on to Boulder Pair, where things get deeper and potentially trickier. Über-adventurers with time on their side can push their way through typically more robust currents to reach the 5-mile mark, the official end for the day-hike option. Bottom’s Up for these bragging rights!

BONUS: About 2.5 miles into the Narrows you’ll encounter a detour to Orderville Canyon (this fork in the river also marks the beginning of Wall Street). We recommend exploring this less-traveled oasis on the return leg of your journey. It passes through a tranquil canyon that’s more lush than the Narrows and leads to Veiled Falls.

Some people hike in their own hiking boots, but that might limit your comfort level and cut plans short. For maximum comfort, we recommend getting outfitted and educated on the river conditions at Zion Adventure Company, 36 Lion Blvd. at the corner of Zion Park Blvd.; phone: (435) 772-1001. They’ve got info on river flow, and flash flood potential, plus essentials like hiking sticks and neoprene footwear, durable boots, waterproof pants, and dry bags. Reserve your gear in advance. No dogs in the Narrows.
Activity: Hike ,Water

Region: Points Beyond

Angels Afoot
You can’t mention hiking in Zion without bringing up Angels Landing. It’s one of the most popular— and hair-raising—hikes in the park. Hang out at any café or restaurant and you’re bound to overhear a conversation about how far someone got on Angels Landing. Why? Well, the final stretch has 1,000-foot drop-offs where the “trail” consists of chains bolted to the rock. Sound fun? Then get an early start, bring plenty of water, and don’t forget your camera. Start at the Grotto trailhead, cross a bridge over the Virgin River, then get a head-on view of Angels Landing. It’s quite a spectacular setting in the middle of Zion Canyon under the shadow of The Great White Throne—a 6,744-foot-tall sandstone mountain that’s often the symbol of Zion. A gradual ascent turns more strenuous as it switchbacks up the canyon wall to Refrigerator Canyon. Catch your breath here before starting the 21 short and steep zigzagging switchbacks known as Walter’s Wiggles (named after the park’s first superintendent). After you squiggle the wiggles, it’s only a half-mile to the top. But what a half-mile it is! You’ll be hiking (with the assist of cables) on a narrow rock fin with steep drop-offs. The reward: superb 360-degree views of nearly all of Zion Canyon. And better restaurant banter.

Get off the Zion shuttle at the Grotto stop, cross the road, and follow the West Rim Trail up to Angels Landing. Get an early start to avoid crowds as there can be traffic jams on the narrowest chain and cable sections. Make sure you wear proper footwear. Not recommended for people who don’t have a head for heights. No dogs.
Activity: Hike

Region: Points Beyond

Stunning Observation
In contention with Angels Landing as the best view in Zion (and much less daunting for those with vertigo) is the 8-mile (round-trip) trek to 6,508-foot Observation Point. It’ll take you all the way to the top of Zion’s east rim for an exceptionally rewarding view. But first, get ready for 2,150 feet of climbing—nearly 4 miles of up, and up, and up. Make it an early start (the trail is exposed in parts and afternoon heat can make it unpleasant). A nice bonus is you’ll find far fewer people on this trail than other popular ones (ahem, Angels Landing), plus there’s a slot canyon to explore. You’ll be in the refreshing shade for the first part of the hike, zigzagging for a mile up the canyon via long switchbacks. Then you’ll enter massive Echo Canyon, a stunning side canyon that rises 1,000 feet. Enjoy the cooler clime here, as the shade becomes sparse on the latter part of the trail. It’s a steady ascent through the white and orange cliffs to the mesa top. The trail is mostly flat for the final half-mile, weaving through a piñon and juniper forest to Observation Point. Whoa—what a vista! From up here, you’ll not only be looking down on Angels Landing, you’ll also be gaining a wide-open perspective of Zion, sprawled out in front of you like an undiscovered kingdom of untamed—and utterly breathtaking—wilderness.

STAY & EAT: Zion Lodge is the only in-park accommodation. It’s pure rustic flirtation, with a café and restaurant (al fresco dining on the patio here is beautiful), historic cabins, and regular rooms with private porches, several of which offer gorgeous views of red-rock cliffs. Camping is also available. Watchman Campground books up fast in summer: reservations (877) 444-6777. South Campground is first-come, first served. Call Visitor Information for more details: (435) 772-3256. Immediately outside the park is charming Springdale, offering a wealth of options for hotels, motels, B&Bs, and meals. Book ahead!

The trailhead for Observation Point is at the Weeping Rock shuttle stop. Follow the 4-mile trail up and return the way you came. No dogs.
Activity: Hike ,Overnights

Region: Points Beyond

Swift at Sea!

What does a yellowfin tuna have in common with ORACLE TEAM USA’s catamaran? Set on the main divide between Orange and Riverside counties, the campground’s 50 sites—laid out across ridges and meadows—are shaded by large live oaks and Coulter pines. Incredible care was taken when building this campground, so there’s no bad place to pitch your tent. Sloped sites have been built up with low brick walls that resemble the ruins of old cabins to create level camping areas (and ensure that nothing will roll off the picnic table!). Sites 9–16 have short walk-ins. For a broad view over the mountains and canyons to the south, aim for site 11, or set up at site 10 for a solid view of Los Pinos Ridge. With no city lights in sight, the campground dims at night for sterling stargazing, and things get really quiet too, save for the occasional passing airplane. You’re so close, yet so far away.

HIKE BONUS: From Blue Jay Campground, San Juan Trail descends 11 miles (one-way) to Ortega Highway. You have to hike only about a quarter mile down the trail before gaining a great vista of the surrounding green mountains and canyon. Go as far as you’d like before returning the way you came.

Take Ortega Hwy. (SR 74) to North Main Divide Rd. Drive north for 4 miles and turn left on Long Canyon Rd. to reach the campground, which will be on the right just past Falcon Group Camp. Sites are $20 per night; first-come, first-served. Each site has a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring. There are vault toilets and drinking water. RVs up to 20 feet long are permitted, but there are no hook-ups. Dog-friendly!
Activity: Overnights ,Dog-friendly

Region: Orange County ,Inland Empire

Fit for Kings
Want to pitch your tent within walking distance of the world’s third largest tree? Then answer the call of the Sierra at Azalea Campground in Kings Canyon National Park. This 110-site campground sits at 6,500 feet, on the edge of the famed grove of giant sequoias. Its first two loops (one of which is for tent camping only) have sites spaced along small verdant meadows peppered with corn lilies. Boulders and manzanitas add privacy between the sites, while tall sugar pines contribute shade. At night, find some open sky and gaze up at the Milky Way. As you crawl out of your sleeping bag in the morning, the crisp mountain air is filled with birdsong; blue-bodied Steller’s jays and crimson-crowned acorn woodpeckers like to poke around the campsite. Nature’s royal awakening.

HIKE BONUS: A trail through Azalea Campground leads 0.7 mile to Grant Grove, home of the massive 267-foot tall General Grant Tree. Hike 0.3 mile in the other direction to Grant Village, where there’s a visitor center, restaurant, and general store.

Azalea Campground is located near the Big Stump Entrance of Kings Canyon National Park just off SR 180, 1.6 miles north of the intersection of SR 180 and SR 198. Sites at Azalea Campground are first-come, first-served at $18 per night for tents and RVs. If Azalea Campground is full, there are two other campgrounds in the Grant Grove area. Each site comes with a bear box, picnic table, and a fire ring with a grill. Drinking water and flush toilets are available at the campground. Dogs are allowed in the campground on a leash but not on any park trails.
Activity: Overnights ,Dog-friendly

Region: Points Beyond

Whistling Dixon
Picture yourself setting up camp on a ridge above a shimmering blue reservoir backed by hills covered in orange boulders. Now make it happen on a camping trip to northern San Diego County’s Dixon Lake Regional Park. You’ll get nice views throughout the 45-site campground—and there’s something for everyone. For those craving extra privacy and a private path down to the water, snag spot 45, the closest campsite to the lake. Site 6 has an excellent view of the entire lake, and site 31 has a two-way view of the lake and the city of Escondido. (You can reserve any site in advance.) If looking at the beautiful blue oasis isn’t your thing (hey, we’re not judging), sites on the ridge’s west side look down over Escondido, and at night you can spy streetlights twinkling a few hundred feet below (oh, you city-slicker!). Anglers are especially drawn to Dixon Lake, reeling in bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and trout. Dixon is quite a catch!

HIKE BONUS: Explore a 2-mile (one-way) path running along the shore of Dixon Lake past peaceful coves and numerous fishing docks. The dam at Dixon Lake is closed to the public, so you can’t quite hike a full loop around the lake. Instead, double back along the clear blue water.

Dixon Lake Regional Park is located at 1700 N. La Honda Dr. in Escondido. The entrance gate opens daily at 6:00 a.m. and closes at dusk, year-round. Sites are $25 per night for a non-hookup site ($35 with a hookup for RVs). For weekend camping it’s best to call ahead to reserve a site for an extra $5 fee: (760) 741-3328. Picnic tables and a charcoal fire ring are provided (no wood fires). Swimming and wading in the lake is prohibited. No dogs.
Activity: Overnights

Region: Northern San Diego County

One of the least visited lakes of them all? Half Moon Lake, situated just off a main trail under a towering granite cirque where rock walls rise 1,300 feet above the lakeshore. It’s an utterly dramatic and serene location to pitch your tent. Access to this camping solitude comes via a 5.5-mile (one-way) hike that ascends 1,500 feet. Starting from the Glen Alpine Trailhead off of Fallen Leaf Road, follow the well-signed trail on some serious switchbacks before joining up briefly with the Pacific Crest Trail (don’t take fork trails going to Grass Lake or Susie Lake). A sign directs you to Half Moon Lake. This last mile of the hike rollercoasters past several small ponds before terminating at Desolation’s largest and deepest cirque, beneath towering Jacks Peak and Dicks Peak. Once you’ve reached Half Moon Lake, you have a choice to make: go right along the north shore, or go left to cross-country over the rocks. Either way, the best camping option is on the far southwest corner of the lake, next to tiny Alta Morris Lake. Shhhhhh…that’s all we’re saying.

TIP: Avid adventurers with lungs primed for high altitude can tack on a side trip to the 9,735-foot peak of Mt. Tallac, one of the grandest views in all of Lake Tahoe. It’s a tough extra 5 miles that rewards with sweeping views of Desolation Wilderness, Fallen Leaf Lake, and Lake Tahoe.

A wilderness permit is required for day hikers and backpackers. A trailhead quota system is also in place during the summer. Fifty percent of permits can be reserved; the other 50 percent are first-come, first-served. Reservations for permits can be made at recreation.gov. For maps, up-to-date information, and permits, contact the USFS Taylor Creek Visitor Center on Hwy. 89, 3 miles northwest of the intersection of Hwy. 89 and Hwy. 50, just beyond Fallen Leaf Road, (530) 543-2600. Just 20 miles from the Oregon border, Jed Smith is in Redwood National Park, and has the noble role of protecting 10,000 acres of first-growth (aka old-growth) redwoods. The park itself is split by the emerald green Smith River, California’s last major free-flowing river—at Jedidiah you have the privilege and pleasure of pitching your tent on one of the 89 sites scattered among the redwoods on the banks of the Smith (reservations recommended). In summer, a seasonal footbridge connects the campground to the southern side of the park, where the best hiking trails are, including the 7-mile (round-trip) hike on the Boy Scout Tree Trail. Meander among some of the oldest coastal redwoods, some over 300 feet tall. But it’s not just about looking up. The lush undergrowth of rhododendrons, azaleas, and ferns is the stuff of storybooks. Back at camp, roast marshmallows as the sky turns dark and listen to the rushing Smith River. Amen!

BONUS: To really see the Smith River, float down it! Redwood River Trips runs an awesome family-friendly trip on inflatable kayaks through 3 scenic miles of the crystal-clear river with stops at private beaches and swimming holes.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is 9 miles east of Crescent City on Hwy. 199. Located by the shores of San Pablo Bay, China Camp State Park’s Back Ranch Meadows Campground has 34 tent sites geographically strewn to suit different outdoor styles. Half of the sites are spread across a lightly forested hill with peak-a-boo views of the bay waters (prime ones are sites 27 and 29). The other half are tucked deeper within fragrant laurel and buckeye trees in the canyon (sites 9 through 15 offer the most privacy). RVs aren’t allowed in this area and all the sites are walk-in, but you won’t break a sweat in this woodland haven—the longest trek is five minutes at most. You’ve got it made in China Camp.

BONUS: China Camp is a mountain biker’s paradise. For some fat-tire fun, Shoreline Trail is smooth and never gets too steep, making it ideal for beginners. Intermediate and advanced riders can tackle the steeper, faster, and bumpier Bay View and Peacock Gap Trails leading down from the Nike radar base and weaving through grassy woodlands.

China Camp State Park is 4 miles east of San Rafael on the shore of San Pablo Bay. From Hwy. 101 go east on North San Pedro Rd. until it reaches the park. Visit wineries and landmarks from the film—and enjoy plenty of cinematic scenery—on a half-century ride between Solvang and Lompoc. The 50-mile loop, put together by the Santa Barbara Bike Coalition, explores wine country and Sideways locations like the Hitching Post, AJ Spurs, and the windmill-sporting Days Inn in Buellton. Start with a westward pedal on Route 246 past quaint shops and clock towers in the village of Solvang, which looks transplanted straight from Denmark. Zip through Buellton into a valley where vineyards and farms are cradled by oak-spotted ridges. When you reach Lompoc, spin around and ride back on Santa Rosa Road, a less traveled lane through more beautiful wine country. You’ll pass the grand Spanish-style ranch house at Sanford Winery (5010 Santa Rosa Road), which is where Miles taught Jack how to taste wine in Sideways. Zip down a hill to Lafond Winery (6855 Santa Rosa Road) for some pinot noir before rolling back to Solvang.

Start from the intersection of Route 246 and Alisal Road in Solvang and start biking west. Bring this route guide and start early for less wind. Bike rentals are available from Wheel Fun Rentals, 475 First St., along Solvang Park just west of the starting point.
Activity: Bike

Region: Points Beyond

Brut Force
“Wine Country” might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Inland Empire, but Temecula Valley is absolutely booming with wineries, many of which are large enough to have their own restaurant or inn. Take a leisurely 10.5-mile ride through the heart of this wine country, popping off for a champagne celebration finish at Wilson Creek Winery. Start from Pauba Ridge Park and get warmed up on a wide dirt bike path as you make your way to Rancho California Road, which is like Main Street for Temecula’s wineries. Pass the first potential tasting spot, Hart Family Winery, almost immediately and pedal past rolling hills lined with grape vines and a couple of orange groves. Wilson Creek is toward the end of the run of wineries and makes a good place to stop and turn around.

CHAMPAGNE BONUS: The “Oh My Gosh” almond champagne at Wilson Creek Winery (35960 Rancho California Rd.) is exceptional. Tastings are $20 on weekends and $15 on weekdays, including a $10-off coupon toward wine purchases. The tasting room is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bring your own lunch and sit out in their lovely picnic grounds.

Park at Pauba Ridge Park at the corner of Pauba Rd. and Via del Monte (map). Bike west on the bike trail along Pauba Rd. for 0.6 mile and turn right onto Butterfield State Rd. After 0.9 mile, turn right on Rancho California. Bike through 3.75 miles of wine country to Wilson Creek Winery, on the left.
Activity: Bike

Region: Inland Empire

Ride the Rails
No car needed to get to San Luis Obispo’s wine country. Ride the rails instead! Leaving right from SLO’s train station, there’s an 18.4-mile loop ride through the wineries in Edna Valley. Begin on the Railroad Bike Path, which follows the tracks south to Orcutt Road, your route to Edna Valley. The bike-friendly road leaves town on a rolling course beneath the Santa Lucia Mountains. After passing a few small volcanic hills, you’ll enter Edna Valley, a bucolic scene with row upon row of grape vines broken up by a few cattle ranches. This is also where the terrain levels, letting you relax and enjoy the setting as you circle the valley. Numerous wineries pop up all along the way (marked on this Edna Valley Bike Map prepared by the San Luis Obispo County Bike Coalition). It’s the wine express!

WINE BONUS: Pedal up to Wolff Vineyards (6238 Orcutt Rd.), a sustainable winery with award-winning Riesling and Syrah. The tasting room and patio have an incredible view across Edna Valley toward SLO. Zin fans should not miss Saucelito Canyon Vineyards (3080 Biddle Ranch Rd.). Both wineries are dog-friendly!

Start from the San Luis Obispo Amtrak Station, take a bridge across the tracks, and follow Railroad Bike Path for 1.3 miles to Orcutt Rd. Turn left, bike 1 mile and turn right to stay on Orcutt Rd. Bike 2.8 miles and make a left to stay on Orcutt Rd. After 4.25 miles on Orcutt Rd., you will pass Biddle Ranch Rd., which can be used as a shortcut to create a 13.3-mile loop. For the full loop, bike 3 more miles on Orcutt Rd. Turn right on Tiffany Ranch Rd., go 1 mile to Corbett Canyon Rd. and turn right. Bike two miles and turn right on Highway 227. Ride 5.3 miles back to Orcutt Rd. and turn right to reach the Railroad Bike Path.
Activity: Bike

Region: Points Beyond

Game Changing Vacation

It’s the great vacation makeover—starring you and our fantastic neighbor to the north, British Columbia, Canada! And some of the best ones out there require a little hike-in action. Here are three worth lacing up for.
Wonder Balls
Hidden on the Mendocino Coast, Bowling Ball Beach lives up to its name, and then some. Giant smoothly rounded boulders (some 12 feet across) are scattered across the beach. But you’ve got to go at low tide to truly appreciate the beauty of this place. And there aren’t any big signs pointing the way. It’s about a 5-minute walk along a bluff down to a rickety wooden stair-ladder that descends to the sand. Watch your step. Once you reach the beach, it’s another 5 minutes of walking to reach the big balls. About 100 are visible at low tide. Play hopscotch jumping from one to the next. Then sit back on the beach and watch as the water laps around this natural wonder. Go big!

TIP: Bowling Ball Beach isn’t far from Sea Ranch, a great spot for an overnight escape.

The beach is 10.5 miles north of the town of Gualala along Hwy. 1. Park at the western pullout just north of Schooner Gulch River on the highway, and look for the sign that says "Park Facing South." There are two trailheads; take the less obvious northern trail, veer right at the fork, and walk five minutes to the bluff. Be cautious dropping down the stair-ladder as there has been a lot of erosion. Those with limited mobility aren't advised. Once on the beach, walk five minutes north. Dog-friendly!
Activity: Hike ,Water ,Relax ,Dog-friendly

Region: Points Beyond

Light at the End of the Tunnel
Since the new Devil’s Slide Tunnel opened a few months ago, the San Mateo Coast has, well, pretty much stayed the same: it’s a glorious golden coastline packed with pocket beaches. One of the best? Gray Whale Cove State Beach, located right at the southern end of the new tunnel. The short-and-steep trail and stairs leading down to the cove are part of the adventure—and worth every step! Gray Whale is popular, but there’s lots of space at this sandy respite backed by dramatic cliffs. Bring a picnic, stake a section, and take in the scenery. This is pure beach-blanket bliss. Watch as the Pacific waves tumble or hurl toward giant rock formations, culminating in either a splish or a splash. Like many secluded sands in northern California, you may also be privy to a full moon that’s usually not as becoming as the real deal; this turf’s also a favorite of the clothing-free crowd. There’s room to find a cove cover-up though! That’s the great thing about Gray’s anatomy.

Gray Whale Cove State Beach is 5 miles south of Pacifica on Hwy. 1. Parking is on the east side of the highway just past the tunnel, and the beach is on the west side. Use caution when crossing the highway. No dogs.
Activity: Water ,Relax

Region: Peninsula & South Bay

Black on Gold
Nearly a mile of slate and black sand, expansive views of the the Golden Gate, and just minutes from San Francisco, Marin Headlands' Black Sand Beach (also known as Upper Fisherman’s) is roughly the size of Baker Beach—with only a fraction of the crowds. Get there in the morning (the parking lot is small and fills up fast) and begin the 10-minute march down 253 wooden steps and some single-track. Spread a blanket behind one of the several rock outcroppings (a great windbreak on gusty days). The water is a refreshing 58 degrees when the afternoon heats up, but wade in with caution—the currents can be dangerous here; you may be better off staying on land, spying the seals and watching sailboats. Heads-up: some folks here like to frolic bare-style, making the place a setting for many natural wonders. Oh!

Take Alexander Ave., the first exit north of the Golden Bridge. Make an immediate left and go under the freeway heading west. Follow Conzelman Rd. all the way up. Continue down past Hawk Hill; this is a steep and twisty road—buckle up! When the road levels, look for a dirt parking lot (with an "Upper Fisherman's" sign) and restroom on the left. From its urban environs to its coast and mountain ranges, here are three bucket-list musts—with overnight options to boot. Lace up and go!
Potato Chip Topper
If you associate potato chips with unwanted calories, get ready for a re-education. You’ll burn a lot of energy on the hike to Potato Chip Rock—a one-of-a-kind boulder jutting out from the top of Mount Woodson in north San Diego County. Before you gain bragging rights (picture walking on a twelve-foot-long granite diving board at the top of a mountain), you’ve first got to hike 3.8 thigh-burning miles (one-way) up Mount Woodson Trail from the Lake Poway Recreation Area. Things start off leisurely enough along the 64-acre Lake Poway. Then the haul begins as you climb up, up, and up a boulder-strewn mountainside. The lake shrinks in your rearview while the vistas expand over the surrounding valleys and small mountain ranges. You’ll catch a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean to the west as the trail turns east, closing out the 1,800-foot ascent on a ridge covered in a garden of boulders. Potato Chip Rock pops out just below the antenna-tower-covered summit. Inch your way out to the edge of this boulder for a gravity-defying experience. Take a victory photo: you’re the king of Potato Chip Castle.

Start from Lake Poway Recreation Area (14656 Lake Poway Rd. in Poway; map). Hike up Mount Woodson Trail for 3.8 miles to Potato Chip Rock, just below the summit. There is a $5 entrance fee for the park, open sunrise to sunset. See its most dramatic scenery in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (and score a little beach time at nearby Torrey Pines State Beach) by setting out on a 2.25-mile loop to marquee overlooks at Razor Point and Yucca Point. Venture down a sage-covered bluff dotted with Torrey pines—the rarest pine tree in North America. The viewpoints offer postcard-perfect perspectives of striated sandstone cliffs that seem to melt into the Pacific. Take Beach Trail down a canyon that leads to a sandy strip between the waves and the cliffs. Walk north up the beach to spot rainbow-colored bands in the orange cliffs above, or venture to a more secluded beach by following a surprise path cut into the bluff above Flat Rock.

WHERE TO STAY: Splurge for The Lodge at Torrey Pines (11480 N. Torrey Pines Rd. in La Jolla), a gorgeous resort overlooking the 18th green of the PGA Torrey Pines Golf Course. The architecture plays up to its natural surroundings with exposed wood beams, a giant garden, and windows galore. Conveniently, it’s just a 0.7-mile walk from the lodge to the edge of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Rather rough it? Camp at Dixon Lake Regional Park (1700 N. La Honda Dr., Escondido). Its 45 sites are on a ridge above a reservoir backed by boulder-covered hills.

Enter from the north end of the reserve off N. Torrey Pines Dr. (map). Entrance fee is $10 per vehicle Monday through Thursday, $12–15 per vehicle Friday through Sunday and holidays. Drive 1 mile into the reserve and park at the Beach Trailhead on the right, across from the visitor center. Be mindful of the tide. Park closes at sunset. Bring this trail map and brochure. At 1,591 feet, it’s the highest summit within the city of San Diego, with cinematic 360-degree views. To hike to the top try the east approach, a 3-mile loop combining Barker Way and Cowles Mountain Trail. Barker Way has some steep spurts, but you’ll gain views over East County toward the Laguna Mountains and other rocky peaks. At the apex it’s as if someone drew back a curtain to reveal a stunning new view to the west. Lake Murray shimmers just below the mountain slope to the southwest, and beyond that rises the skyline of downtown San Diego, backed by the Pacific. The panorama even goes international, with views into Tijuana and Mesa Redonda, Mexico (two photo displays help identify the major peaks and landmarks). The descent dishes more views of the city. You stay classy, San Diego.

Park along the street at the Barker Way Trailhead (located just across from 6941 Barker Way in San Diego; map). Begin up the dirt service road, immediately passing the single-track on the left that will be your return route. Hike 1.6 miles up the dirt road to reach the summit. Head down the south side of the mountain on Cowles Mountain Trail. Turn left at a junction after half a mile, following signs for the Barker Way Trailhead, another mile down the trail. (The south end of Cowles Mountain Trail, which begins at the intersection of Navajo Rd. and Golfcrest Dr., was closed for trail construction until May 13, but is not required for this loop.) Looking for something more mellow? Stroll Spanish Banks—a long series of beautiful beaches, where English Bay meets the open waters of the Strait of Georgia. Being that this is the Pacific Northwest, get your amazingly good coffee at 49th Parallel or Bean Around the World, bastions of Vancouver’s barista culture. Epic mountain biking is practically synonymous with British Columbia, and the legendary North Shore is laced with steep trails, wooden bridges, boulders, and teeter-totters.

BC Trip Ideas: Whistler

The best way to see the world-famous beauty of Whistler? Hike the High Note Trail for its mountaintop and lake views, alpine wildflowers, and impressive perspective of Black Tusk peak.
