Maybe, at least that's what they told us in health class.

So if breakfast is the first meal of the day and you're trying to lose weight, it's probably a smart idea to make your first meal a good one.

And since most dieters judge food by two simple factors: fat and calories. Here are seven foods you should ditch and seven foods you should switch to if you're looking for a better breakfast.

English Muffin or Bagel?

Sorry, but a bagel with a schmear of cream cheese just isn't Kosher - at least not for dieting. You're better off switching to toasted nooks and crannies dripping with melted butter.

*English Muffin, with butter
Breakfast gets you started, but then dinner is so far, far way. But you got to be careful, you can't use boredom or a bad day as an excuse to eat badly. Not smart.

So if you're jonesing for lunch, but are also trying to lose weight, here are seven foods you should ditch and seven foods you should switch too.

Big Mac or Veggie Delight?

In this mini-battle of fast food giants, McDonald's fails miserably. The smart move is the Veggie Delight; throw the Big Mac in the trash.

*Subway Veggie Delight (6 in)
2.5g total fat
230 calories

McDonald's Big Mac
37.7g total fat
704 calories

BLT or Pizza?

Both aren't stellar options; melted cheese versus greasey bacon - not exactly health food! But surprisingly pizza isn't the worst thing you can eat.

*Cheese pizza (1 slice)
3.2g total fat
140 calories

Bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich
(5 strips of bacon, 2 tbsp of mayo)
34g total fat
550 calories

Tuna or Egg Salad Sandwich?

What looks good to you, mashed up eggs or mashed up tuna fish? Go with the tuna, it just narrowly edges out the eggs and mayo.

*Tuna fish sandwich
31g total fat
530 calories

Egg salad sandwich
32.8g total fat
555 total calories

Orange or Baby Carrots?

Okay, carrots and oranges are both winners, but if you want to get picky about it, a handful of baby carrots is a little better.

*Baby carrots (10)
0g total fat
50 calories

Orange
0.2g total fat
63 calories

Ham Sandwich or Chicken Soup?

Two American classics, sometimes served together, but if you're looking to lose weight, go with the low-sodium soup.

*Campbell's Light Chicken Soup
(low-sodium, one can)
4.5g total fat
130 calories

Ham and cheese sandwich
15.5g total fat
352 calories

Sushi or Caesar Salad?

California rolls and Caesar salads are chic lunch options for a high-power business meeting, but sushi is the better choice.

*California Roll (4 pieces)
4g total fat
150 calories

Panera Caesar Salad (5oz)
16g total fat
220 calories

Power Bar or Clif Bar?

Need energy on the go? Both a Power Bar and a Clif Bar will give it to you, but we're talking diet here! Of the 47,341 American men and women involved in the study, those with the highest caffeine consumption were most likely to have the two genes present.

Scientists have long thought that caffeine addiction may have an inherited genetic component, but until now they were unable to isolate the genes responsible for some people's ability and desire to consume large doses of caffeine daily. In a recent interview with ABC News Dr. Neil Caporaso, a senior investigator in the study, said;
"Genetic studies have identified many associations with diseases, but very few for diet agents. It turns out that your liver, more than your brain, determines daily caffeine intake."

People who crave and consume the most caffeine do so because their bodies are able to process caffeine more efficiently. If you would like to see how much caffeine you consume daily, you can figure out your daily consumption using this extensive caffeine content database. If you consume over 300mg of caffeine a day, you most likely have inherited the two genes. It looks like we have yet another thing to blame our parents for.

Are you a caffeine addict? How much do you consume daily?

View the original article here

We are seeing children as young as three or four with arterial clogging".
She adds;
We know that a vegetarian diet is much healthier."

Needless to say, Meat Promotion Wales didn't take kindly to the confrontational ad, stating:
Peta's agenda is to force everyone to pursue a vegetarian lifestyle and they are willing to exploit the suffering experienced by genuine child abuse victims to further their own agenda".
They go on to say
Red meat is an essential part of a healthy diet and we will be making a fresh complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) about this poster."

Interesting sound bites - both are dead accurate in their first statements and then go on to make misleading and inaccurate conclusion. To wit;

PETA:

"Kids are getting unhealthy and fat": True
"We all know a vegetarian diet is much healthier": Untrue/at the very least needs qualification

Meat Promotion Wales

"PETA has an agenda and is exploiting and trivializing the very real and scary issue of child abuse." True
"Red meat is an essential part of a healthy diet". Untrue/at the very least needs qualification

I wish I could say I didn't expect this from PETA but in my opinion it is typical practice for them to distort facts and use shock tactics in the name of promoting their agenda.
A council spokeswoman isn't terribly enamored with the advert either, stating (quite accurately, I believe)

Unfortunately, the message conveyed in this advert is portrayed as stereotypically offensive and is blatantly inaccurate. From a children's services point of view, this advert is at the very least ill-conceived - and at worst may cause distress to an already vulnerable group of children, young people and their families".

In short, these kinds of fear-mongering tactics serve only to deflect from the true culprits and solutions to combating childhood obesity.

View the original article here

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that between 2007 to 2008, 17% kids ages 2 to 19 years old were obese.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study included more than 37,000 Israeli soldiers. Soldiers were drafted at age 17 and remained in the military as a career; 90% of the men worked at desk jobs. The participants were followed for 17 years; on average soldiers gained 33 pounds.

In order to closely monitor body mass index (BMI), the scientists controlled for cholesterol levels, exercise, smoking, blood pressure, weight changes, and family history of cardiovascular disease.

At the end of the study, when the majority of the study participants were in their mid-30s, 0.9% of the men were diagnosed with heart disease. And men who were obese as teenagers had a 1.8% higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally these men had a 3% higher risk of diabetes. The researchers say the effects in women are unclear.

Researchers used an angiogram to determine heart risk; a coronary artery narrowed by 50% classified as having heart disease.

According to the American Heart Association, today one in three children in the U.S. are overweight or obese; triple the rate in 1963. The causes of obesity are obvious: poor diet, including over-consumption of junk food and insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables; and lack of exercise.

Image: stop-childhood-obesity

View the original article here

He tried many "fad" diets, support groups, and expensive weight loss programs, but in the end the only thing that worked for him was learning how to very simply "Just Stop Eating So Much" and get moving.

Gregg McBride once weighed 450+ pounds (his scale wouldn't go any higher) and says that he was winded just by talking on the phone. When he was finally able to "release the weight" (as he puts it) by eating less and moving more, his life changed.

In the book, the author shares his personal struggles with being overweight including the discrimination, the embarrassment of flying on an airplane, and the inability to connect with anyone romantically. After being asked by people for 10 years how he was able to remarkably lose the weight, he decided to outline his plan and publish Just Stop Eating So Much! .

The title of Gregg McBride's book came from the advice he was given by a muscular workmate when then, 450 pound Gregg, asked him how he could lose weight. At first Gregg said he was disappointed with such simple advice, but the more he thought about it, the more it made perfect sense.

Just Stop Eating So Much! first takes a look at the eating habits of thin people and compares them with the eating habits of fat people. Gregg then outlines how fat people can start incorporating the eating habits of a thin person.
Dieters are instructed to drink a lot of water, eat 5 times a day, and to avoid all types of processed and packaged food. Just Stop Eating So Much! includes a detailed meal plan and meal options so that the dieter can prepare meals and follow McBride's plan easily. Whole foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, legumes, low fat dairy, coffee, and tea are incorporated into the plan.

Just Stop Eating So Much! also includes a shopping list and a family meal planning guide to make the plan more user friendly for those with busy schedules and families. Mcbride includes many other eating tips and recommends that dieters get at least 7.5 hours of sleep while on his program.

Exercise is an important component of Just Stop Eating so Much! and dieters are advised to start small by doing exercises that are suitable for their body types as well activities they find enjoyable. Walking is highly recommended as a good starting point and McBride also gives other recommendations like muscle training and yoga. He says exercising 3 to 4 times a week is essential for the greatest amount of success on his program.

McBride includes in his plan many tips and suggestions to assist the dieter in being successful including food diaries, ways to track success, online resources, dealing with stress, and how to deal with temptation. McBride, in addition to being a weight loss success story, is a professional writer and this book is an easy and enjoyable read.
Obesity and weight loss are complex issues and Just Stop Eating So Much! probably simplifies the process somewhat as the methods that worked for McBride probably won't work for everyone. A person has to find a plan that works best according to his/her unique situation and needs.

However, Gregg McBride's plan is based on solid nutrition, calorie restriction, and exercise along with some elements of dealing with emotional reasons for over-eating, so I think many would find success on the Just Stop Eating So Much! plan and will be able to relate to Gregg McBride's story as well as be inspired by his success.

Just Stop Eating so Much! is available on Amazon.

View the original article here

People were classified as vegetarian, eating meat less than once a month; semi-vegetarian, eating meat less than once a week; and non-vegetarians. However, the term "vegetarian" is incorrectly defined; true vegetarians never eat meat.

Results showed vegetarians had an average body mass index (BMI) of 25.7. Unlike non-vegetarians who had an average BMI close to 30. Semi-vegetarians' BMI fell between the vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

A BMI between 25 and 29 is considered overweight and a BMI from 30 and up is obese. Normal weight is between 18.5 and 25.

The findings remained steady when researchers combined all the readings to determine the risk of metabolic syndrome.

In 2008, Vegetarian Times reported that 7.3 million Americans follow a vegetarian diet: 59% are female, 41% are male. As of 2009, the total U.S. population was nearly 308 million.

According to the American Heart Association, a vegetarian diet - with its heavy vegetable consumption and low intake of saturated fat from animal products - has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attack, obesity, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer.

View the original article here

The women who happened to be mothers, on average, had a higher BMI, consumed more calories, and exercised less than non-mothers. Fathers fared a little better with less exercise, but had a similar BMI compared to non-fathers.

I can't imagine how hard it is for parents to balance all the demands of parenting with all the while trying to look after themselves. However, there are many very fit and healthy parents out there, so I wonder how they do it?

How do you stay fit and healthy as a parent and are there any tips you could give parents that find keeping fit and healthy difficult post children? Not exactly fuel for young minds.

But in recent years many schools have made strides to improve cafeteria food; even the government has tried to promote better nutrition in schools.

The easiest way around nasty school food is to pack your kids a lunch. But one Chicago school says cafeteria food is better than bagged lunches, so its banning lunches brought from home.

Little Village Academy, a public school on Chicago's West Side, is not allowing students to pack lunches from home, unless they have a medical excuse, such as allergies. Kids must eat food served in the cafeteria.

"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school. It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve," explains Principle Elsa Carmona explains. "It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

But Little Village's idea isn't exactly working. A recent observation showed dozens of students throwing uneaten food in the garbage. And since Chicago public schools improved the quality of cafeteria food, there has been a drop-off in school lunch sales. Kids complain about the taste.

And some family members of students worry that kids will go hungry, especially "picky eaters." That may be so, but the term "picky eater" really means immature child, lazy parenting - so ignore that excuse.

Other people worry that forcing kids to eat school lunch is a ploy to funnel more profits into the school district. This is probably true.

But overall, Little Village's initiative is clearly wrong, even if their food is healthy, they can't do this. They're taking away a parent's power (not a right) to make decisions that they feel are best for their kid. Unless the child is morbidly obese and his lunch bag is only filled with Ring Dings, Fritos, and Coca-Cola, schools can't intervene willy-nilly, period.

View the original article here

Hunger is good. In fact, you should actually feel hungry around four times per day.

Slight stomach pains and sounds of growling is your belly saying it's time to eat.

But, don't wait too long between meals, because if you are overly hungry, it's difficult to avoid taking in too many calories in a very short space of time.

So, how do you distinguish between hunger and cravings?

You should ask yourself if you started to feel like eating in response to seeing or smelling food, or perhaps simply because food was readily available to you. If so, it's more than likely that your appetite is taking over, making you think you're hungry, when it's actually a craving.

You need to get out of the habit of eating simply because food is available.

Easier said than done if you are an emotional eater I know, but you can overcome it. Read about Monica Seles on conquering emotional eating.
Everyone knows this, but eating slowly helps you to avoid overeating. When you eat slowly, it gives your body time to recognize that you've had enough food, and signal you should stop eating now.
Also, allowing a little room in your stomach aids the digestive process, and helps you to avoid that uncomfortable bloated feeling.
Don't forget the importance of drinking lots of water. Very often people think they are experiencing hunger pangs, when it is actually the body calling out for water.
So, when you feel hungry, reach for a glass of water first, before you eat something. Then, wait a few minutes and see if you still feel like you need to eat.

View the original article here

Denny's "Baconalia" is a celebration of all things bacon.

Denny's are the same maniacs who dreamt up the "Fried Cheese Melt;" four mozzarella sticks mashed inside a grilled cheese sandwich.

Baconalia is not for the faint of heart, with $4.99 bacon dishes, including a Triple Bacon Sampler, Bacon Meatloaf, and the pièce de résistance, the Maple Bacon Sundae. Yes, ice cream and bacon.

To amp up the excitement for Baconalia, Denny's launched a sweepstakes on Facebook. The grand prize is a trip for two to Baconfest 2011 in Chicago, including airfare and two nights of accommodations.

Maybe Denny's should throw in a fistful of blood-thinners too.

If a bacon ice cream sundae isn't artery-clogging enough for you, Denny's is the Grand Poobah of crappy American food. Also, water must be served whenever food and drinks are provided.

Now I'm all for healthy eating, but are employers overstepping a bit here and in this case it's even a governmental agency, which starts to get a little scary when I think about it. One of the great things about America is freedom and the ability to choose. If a person wants to drink a Coke during their lunch break they should be able to without punishment from the workplace food police.

What do you think? Scientists labeled diets as "processed," "traditional," and "health-conscious."

Processed diets were high in fat, sugar, and convenience foods. Traditional diets consisted of more home cooked meals, meat, poultry, potatoes, and vegetables. And health-conscious diets were high in salads, fruit, vegetables, fish, pasta, and rice.

Even though adjusting for outside factors - such as parental influence, environment, and social and economic status - lessened disparities, scientists still found that children consuming a processed diet at 3 years old had lower IQ scores than children eating a health-conscious diet. At age 8.5, kids consuming a poor diet had a two-point decrease in IQ, while those eating a healthy diet had an increase of 1.2 points.

The researchers point out that children's brains grow at their fastest rate during the first three years, so a healthy diet is critical in early childhood.

And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages parents to teach kids good eating habits early on, such as providing plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limiting sugar-sweetened beverages and saturated fat.

View the original article here

Acai berries have probably been the most popular of the superfruits no small thanks to Oprah, who featured acai on her show a few years ago. However, will baobab fruit be able to capture some of acai's market share?

Baobab (pronounced bay-oh-bab) comes from the baobab tree (Adansonia digitata), which grows in hot, dry lowland areas of Africa. It's been long known in Africa as "The Tree of Life" because its parts have been used medicinally for centuries.

This tree can live 1000 to 3000 years and baobab seeds were even found in the Egyptian pyramids. The fruit is harvested in Southern Africa between February and May each year. The fruit is described as having both a tart and sweet taste.

Baobab has an antioxidant ORAC value of 650/gram which is almost 5 times more than acai berries. Per 20 grams of boabab there are; 10 grams of fiber24mg vitamin C64mg of calcium1.2mg of Iron430mg of potassium26.6mg of magnesium.04mg of sodium.06mg of Fat
A handy comparison chart can be found here (pdf) to see how boabab fruit compares to the other superfruits.

Baobab superfruit's nutrition looks pretty amazing, although the fruit itself doesn't look too appetizing.
I'm sure this fruit will have a lot of health benefits for those that consume it, but as we have learned from the acai berry, there will be dodgy marketers using baobab's amazing health claims to scam people.

If you wish to try baobab superfruit, make sure that you buy it from a trusted source and that you avoid the "try it for 60 days free" offers as these are usually too good to be true.

Source: Baobabfoods.com

View the original article here

Triple negative breast cancer does respond to chemotherapy, but more targeted receptor treatments typically don't work.

For the new study, published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, scientists analyzed data on 155,723 women taking part in a study on the effects of hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women. Scientists focused on the body mass index (BMI) and exercise levels of the 307 women in the study who were diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, and the 2,610 women who had estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers.

Researchers discovered the women with the highest BMI had a 35% higher risk of triple-negative breast cancers, and a 39% increased risk of estrogen-fed breast cancers. Body fat has been shown to produce more estrogen.

Overall, the scientists say the effect was "modest," but the results may offer new ways for women to reduce their risk of triple-negative breast cancer.

In 2008, World Health Organization (WHO) data says cancer killed 7.6 million people worldwide. Breast cancer accounted for 460,000 deaths; fifth in line, behind lung, stomach, liver, and colon cancer. And according to WHO research, in 2008, 1.5 billion adults, ages 20 and up, were overweight; 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese.

View the original article here

Not that I put much stock into what constitutes "manliness" as it's usually wavers according to societal whims and trends.

Fact is, diet soda is marketed heavily to women - until now that is. Introducing "Dr. Pepper 10", a diet pop that makes no bones about its target market, proclaiming at the end of its TV spot "It's not for women". The commercial is as testosterone-induced as it gets, essentially a "Rambo/Predator-esque" backdrop with heavy artillery and a vehicle chase.

Dr. Pepper is attempting to buck the trend of previous unsuccessful attempts of soda giants before it, with Pepsi Max, Diet Mountain Dew, Diet Coke and Diet 7-Up all vying for a largely untapped market.

While the diet soda segment of the industry is gaining ground on its caloric counterpart, they are also competing against the trend of bottled water, "healthy alternative" drinks (like vitamin-enhanced juice/water) and of course energy drinks. Most big beverage companies have adopted these products themselves anyway, but I digress...

The point is, the promotions department at Dr. Pepper has its work cut out for them. The multiple competitors notwithstanding, I don't know that guys are aching for their "own" diet drinks. I can't speak for all men, but that's just my instinct.

Do you think Dr. Pepper 10 will be a success? Or will it go the way of "New Coke", "Clear Pepsi" and "Jones' Thanksgiving Dinner Soda"?

View the original article here

The people involved in the study where 90 men and women, ages 40 to 74.

A control group, who did not receive music or laughter therapy, had no change in either blood pressure reading. Systolic blood pressure is the top number. Diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number.

Experts compared the effects on blood pressure on someone consuming less salt, taking blood pressure medication, or losing ten pounds. But music and laughter is not enough to treat blood pressure.

Previous research has shown that upbeat music improved the inner lining of blood vessels, allowing them to expand by 30%. Also, the release of nitric oxide may help lower blood pressure. Nitric oxide (nitrogen monoxide) is a signaling molecule in the human body and other mammals.

Risk factors for high blood pressure include obesity, lack of exercise, family history, and over-consumption of salt (sodium).

View the original article here

While not part of any official cause-of-death, research has linked obesity to poor immune system function; reducing the body's ability to fight off infections.

Founder Jon Basso expressed remorse and sadness over Blair's passing, calling him a "creative genius," who was set to star in "Heart Attack Grill: The Musical," another commercial for the restaurant.

Other Heart Attack Grill menu options include the Butterfat Shake - touted as having the "world's highest butterfat content" - candy, beer, soda, cigarettes, and the "smaller" Single, Double, and Triple Bypass Burgers.

View the original article here

The Mayo Clinic recommends limiting saturated fat and salt to help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Published in American Journal of Cardiology, researchers surveyed 2,500 heart attack patients and found 36% (884 study participants) admitted to eating fast food frequently in the month before their heart attack. Scientists defined "frequently" as once a week or more.

After a six-month follow-up, the scientists discovered 503 people went back to eating fast food every week; younger patients, men, and less educated individuals were the most likely to return to their fast food habits. But in general fast food consumption decreased among heart attack sufferers, especially older patients and people who had bypass surgery.

And educating heart attack patients did not have a profound affect on their food choices. People who received nutrition counseling - 9 out of 10 patients - still ate fast food frequently. So the researchers are calling for better education before patients leave the hospital.

The American Heart Association has tips for making fast food "friendlier," such as avoiding double meat and bacon, eating grilled chicken sandwiches, asking for wheat buns, and drinking water, diet soda, or low-fat milk.

View the original article here

And in 2008, research implicated Digoxin (marketed as Lanoxin and Digitek) with increased risk of breast cancer.

The Lipitor study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, involved 3,800 diabetes-free adults who had a history of stroke or transient ischemic attacks ("mini" stroke).

In one five-year trial, when compared to placebo and after considering factors, like age, weight, and smoking, Atorvastatin was linked to a 37% higher risk of diabetes.

But in other five-year trials, such as comparing Lipitor to Zocor, or a higher dose of Atorvastatin to a lower dose of the drug, the risk was much smaller; 6.4% to 5.6% and 9% to 8%, respectively. Scientists say the reason for the increases is Lipitor's effect on the body's ability to regulate blood sugar.

For the Digoxin research, which appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, scientists in Denmark analyzed data on 100,000 women, ages 20 and older, who took Digoxin at some point during the 12-year study. Results showed the chance of developing breast cancer was highest in women taking Digoxin in the first five years of the study.

But after those five years, the risk dropped. However, the higher risk returned in people taking Digoxin after three or more years. Other drugs usually given in combination with Digoxin were not associated with breast cancer risk.

Researchers from both studies reiterate the importance of talking to your doctor before beginning a new drug regimen.

View the original article here

And on Sunday, Guinness World Record certified Kelly - who is a three-time national Sumo wrestling champion - as the heaviest person to finish the 26.2-mile race.

Kelly jogged the first 8 miles through the pouring rain, and walked the final 18 miles. Ten miles into the race Kelly says he became delirious and thought about stopping due to painful blisters on his feet, but towards the end of the race he got a second wind.

"I was really struggling in the last five miles," Kelly told reporters, "But I said to myself, 'If I have to crawl, I will.'"

After the race, Kelly goofed around with the media calling himself "one of the best athletes in the world." And he joked, saying, "I'd like to see the Kenyan improve his marathon time by two hours."
(Video from Kelly's 2008 race.)
Kelly isn't done putting his super-sized runners build to the test. He also wants to swim the English Channel, play for the Philadelphia Eagles, and hike from the Dead Sea to Mt. Everest.

Kelly better hurry, though, studies claim the average life-expectancy of Sumo wrestlers is short; between 60 to 65 years old. And Sumos have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, and diabetes; all dangers also associated with obesity.

View the original article here

This is a topic which has been getting a fair amount of attention in recent days.

I discussed the Flat Belly Diet For Men only a few weeks ago, and now Belly Fat Breakthrough, by registered dietitian, Karlene Karst,

Much of the buzz around this topic of losing belly fat, is the result of a 2009 research paper, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which demonstrated the benefits of safflower oil for reducing belly fat. Karlene goes into detail on this subject in chapter 8 of her book.

Basically, this research found that 2 teaspoons of high linoleic safflower oil enabled the women in the study to lose 2 to 4 pounds of belly fat. They also gained lean muscle mass, and had lower fasting blood sugar levels.
The safflower oil used in the study is, however, not readily available -- enter SafSlim -- a "unique patented form of emulsified safflower oil," now commercially available.
The final chapter of the book is very obviously promoting SafSlim, and I have since discovered that Karlene is affiliated with it. This isn't mentioned in the book, which irks me slightly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally against SafSlim, it's just that I feel transparency is always a good idea.

Anyway, that aside, I do feel the book offers some very valuable information.
Karlene talks about "belly-safe carbs." These are whole grains, beans, legumes, and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. She also empathizes that refined carbohydrates, like white sugar, white rice, and white pasta, need to be decreased.
The importance of fiber for curbing appetite and reducing absorption of calories is also highlighted. I assume this is based on research by the University of Kiel, Germany, which found that for every gram of fiber we eat, we eliminate 7 calories. That means,

If you are eating the recommended level of 25-38 grams of fiber, you can subtract 175-266 calories from your diet each day. This alone will help you lose 0.5 to 1 pound per week. (Direct quote from book)

The overall macronutrient content of the Belly Fat Breakthrough is 15-20% of calories from protein, 45-50% from fiber-rich carbohydrates, and no more than 25-30% from fat (with the focus on mono and polyunsaturated fats).
The benefits of having a regular exercise program are also highlighted, with emphasis on strength training. The book also includes a circuit training program, with easier versions for beginners, which is a nice touch.
As a whole, the advice contained in this book is pretty sound. I do feel, however, that specifically targeting "belly fat" is a bit hyped. Again, the scientific research is rather scant on diets which lead to loss of belly fat. I've no doubt you will lose belly fat on this diet, but perhaps more because you are restricting calories, making better food choices, and exercising regularly.

Belly Fat Breakthrough is available from Amazon for $10.

View the original article here

He had a sore throat. Says Murdoch;
I never have anything go wrong... Never have a backache. Never have a headache. Never have anything else.... I went back in my mind: What am I not eating enough of?

It's not fruits and vegetables - he crams as many as 20 of them into the smoothies he drinks two to three times a day. Probably not protein - he eats plenty of seafood, egg whites, beans and nuts to compensate for his avoidance of dairy, red meat and poultry, which are consigned to a list of forbidden foods that also includes alcohol, sugar and salt.

To be able to boast of such impeccable health at any adult age is impressive, but to have never experienced the aforementioned at the age of 87 is nothing short of remarkable.

Murdock's obsession was borne out of tragedy when his third wife, Gabriele, was stricken with advanced ovarian cancer. A diagnosis that would take her life.

Murdock became a man on fire, doing tireless research on nutrition, as he was convinced his wife's demise was lifestyle-related, and that he could have prevented it had they adopted this way of eating sooner.

Murdock's personal passion extends into his business as well. At Dole's headquarters in Westlake Village, CA, employees eat in a subsidized cafeteria, where salad is plentiful and chicken nuggets unthinkable. And, they have free access to a company gym where personal training, also subsidized, is $30 an hour.
A long life is something most people desire (even if it means many of us will have to see bell bottoms in style for a third time). But a) how long can one extend their lives through a strict, healthy lifestyle, and b) are those extra years worth that kind of deprivation?
As for Murdock, he comes across as a man who became obsessed when stricken by tragedy. In all likelihood Murdock will not reach his goal of 125 years.

One thing's for sure, though, genetics certainly hold the trump card when it comes to longevity, although I believe we have some say as to how long we live. Adding years to your life through a healthy lifestyle is no guarantee, but adding LIFE to your YEARS is.

View the original article here
