Both personal trainers and doctors are agreeing that yoga is capable of serious toning and trimming your body while simultaneously working your spirit and your mind into better shape to get you feeling healthier all over. </p>
<h3>Taking Yoga Beyond the Burn</h3>
<p>The calories that you can burn while practicing yoga can vary quite widely from between 180 and 360 in a single hour depending on what type of yoga you are actually practicing. Vinyasa yoga, Ashtanga yoga and other types of power yoga for example are capable of accelerating the calories that you burn by mixing the yoga routines up with kickboxing and dance in workouts known as yoga fusion.</p>
<p>As with all types and styles of yoga practice, there is an even deeper benefit than simply burning calories however, which is that you are tuning into your own body. Suddenly you are actually going to be able to decipher the signals that your body is attempting to send you. You will understand when you are full, or when a certain food that you are eating is not properly digesting. You become so in tune with your body that you begin to understand what foods make you feel wonderful, and this helps you overcome poor eating in favor of healthier habits all around.</p>
<h3>In Some Things, Less Really is More</h3>
<p>The hardcore classes are not necessarily going to be the ones that help you. All types of yoga are helping with weight loss, including gentle yoga and restorative forms of yoga. They do this by kicking in on your parasympathetic nervous system which is the part of your body responsible for regulating your breathing, regulating your digestion and balancing your hormones. Yoga can help to slow you down emotionally and mentally so that you can work in distinguishing between the urgency to eat and emotional impulses capable of driving us toward eating in order to quell feelings. Slowing down can have an extremely helpful effect on our body and our ability to lose weight naturally and healthfully. </p>
<p>There are some asanas or yoga poses that are capable of helping to burn fat, strengthen muscle and burn calories all at once. Yoga is capable of speeding your metabolism up by stimulating the body's endocrine glands, and these are the glands that are responsible for regulating your metabolic rate. Examples of poses that are worth trying for trouble spots include shoulder stand, spinal twist, downward facing dog, fish pose and upward facing dog. All of these yoga asanas or poses are capable of having a tremendous impact on your body and your overall health.</p>

We can’t really do much without our backs and it is very important to protect it while you are exercising. If you have ever suffered from a herniated disc, pulled muscle or slipped disc, you know the pain of a back injury. Luckily, there are many techniques that you can implement to make sure that even if you’re feeling the burn, your back won’t.</p>
<h3><strong>1. Remember the old adage, “Lift with your legs, not your back.” </strong></h3>
<p>It really is true and it does make a difference. If you’re lifting weights, this is absolutely vital. Take the time to ask a personal trainer for lifting tips if you’re a bit rusty or completely new. Find the right position for lifting and practice it at home. Your body will get used to the proper way to lift weights and you’ll reduce your risk for injury.</p>
<h3><strong>2. Never overdo. </strong></h3>
<p>It’s tempting to really take it to the next level, especially when you are motivated to lose weight and you’re seeing results. However, it is best to stop before you reach that wall. Try gradually increasing your workout times and never add a new exercise suddenly. Work into it, and your back will thank you.</p>
<h3><strong>3. Stretch and keep stretching. </strong></h3>
<p>We all know how important it is to <a href="http://www.fatmanunleashed.com/stretching-exercises-are-underrated/">stretch before a workout</a>, but how many of us actually do it? In addition, how many of us actually do it correctly? Again, take the time to work with a trainer or instructor to find out which stretches you should be doing. Let them know which exercises you will be doing so that they can help you stretch the right muscles before hand. A few toe touches and leg pulls are not enough to warm up your back. You’ve got to focus on each part of your body and really take the time to get a good stretch in.</p>
<p>If you take a break or cool down during your workout, you are running the <a href="http://www.weightladder.com/2008/06/26/5-tips-to-prevent-elbow-injuries/">risk of injury</a>. Even if you have already stretched once, you’re going to need to get back out there and do it again. It’s annoying, it’s time consuming, but it’s better than being flat on your back for a few weeks. Anytime you stop for more than five minutes, or if you aren’t really working up to capacity, take the time to re-stretch before moving on to a different exercise.</p>
<h3><strong>4. Know your limits. </strong></h3>
<p>We would all like to think we’re high level athletes that can bench 350, or do 100 pull-ups. But the fact is, most of us simply can’t. You’ve got to know your limits and you’ve got to listen to your body. There is no shame in doing less of an exercise or lifting a little less weight. It is much better than the alternative.</p>

<p>You need to have an overall deficit in calories to lose weight. More specifically, a pound of fat is 3500 calories. <strong>Exercising a little more and eating a little less, so that you have a deficit of 500 calories a day, every week you will loose a pound. </strong>The two components in creating this deficit are exercise and diet. Exercise is a key player in weight loss. The two kinds of exercise, aerobic and strength training are both vital. Aerobic exercise will directly burn calories and speed your metabolism. Strength training will build muscle, increase strength, and provide a greater increase to the rate you burn calories.</p>
<p>Diet is the big player. Improper nutrients can hurt metabolism, and overall health. Some forms of calories are better than others. <strong>Over all, the thing that helps people succeed in losing weight and keeping it off is to eat the right foods and perform the correct exercises. </strong>The key is to read up online and find out what has worked for some and not for others. Learn about the kinds of nutrients that help you lose weight and those that will hinder the process. There are plenty of tiny, easy to do steps that will lead up to success at the end of the day.</p>

Exercise related injuries send thousands to the doctor and even emergency rooms every year and the sad truth is, most of them could have been avoided. Are you setting yourself up for an injury? See if any of these common trouble signs apply to you.</p>
<h3><strong>1. Stretching is for sissies – </strong></h3>
<p>One of the absolute best ways to <a href="http://www.getfitslowly.com/2008/08/13/to-stretch-or-not-to-stretch-who-knows/">guarantee an injury is by refusing to stretch</a>. There is absolutely no reason that anyone should not stretch, even if you will only be exercising for a few minutes. Those five to ten minutes you spend stretching and warming up will pay off time and time again. You can look at this way – 10 minutes stretching versus six months laid up with an injury. Which would you rather choose?</p>
<h3><strong>2. I need to feel the burn – </strong></h3>
<p>There is a fine line between reaching that optimum fat burning zone and the actual burn or more commonly known as “Ow, ow, this really hurts.” Bottom line – if it hurts, you are either doing the exercise wrong, or you are doing it too hard. If there was one term that all exercisers could do without it would be this one. Focus instead on reaching your target heart rate and forget about the burn.</p>
<h3><strong>3. Of course I’m strong enough to do 50 reps – </strong></h3>
<p>It happens to the best of us. Our pride gets in the way of common sense, and we won’t admit that those 50 reps are near killing us. Overexertion is a great way to end up in the hospital and get out of exercising for a few months, but few of us want to go down that road. It’s painful, it’s expensive and it’s counterproductive. Realizing your own limits and then gradually increasing them is by far the better solution.</p>
<h3><strong>4. That machine looks fun –I think I’ll try that – </strong></h3>
<p>Using machines that are you are not familiar with is a great way to get injured. If you don’t know how to use a machine, you need to ask for help. It is all too easy to either seriously injure yourself or at the very least come up with a few strained muscles. Never tackle any new equipment that you do not know how to use.</p>
<h3><strong>5. I don’t need no stinking cool down – </strong></h3>
<p>Well, actually, we all do. Top athletes know that <a href="http://www.weightladder.com/2008/07/21/5-important-steps-to-cool-down-the-right-way-after-exercise/">cooling down can be just as important as warming up</a>. If you are not giving yourself at least five to ten minutes recovery time at the end of your workout, you will most likely regret it either later that night or the next day. Always add a cool down into your routine to avoid this problem.</p>
<p>Anyone can be injured exercising, but if you stop setting yourself up for an injury, you’ll be able to avoid it.</p>

There are many benefits to having a diet rich in whole grains, and this book from Drs. Lisa Hark and Darwin Deen offers a plan that is based almost entirely around adding these nutrient rich foods. Let’s take a look at the book and see whether or not it’s based on sound science, or it’s just another fad.</p>
<p>This diet calls for removing all processed grains from your diet, and for many, that certainly won’t be easy. The first part of the diet is absolutely the most difficult. During this stage, you are not allowed to drink alcohol, you must eat at the same time every day and meals cannot be skipped. Fruit and vegetables are also a very important component during this time period and the diet calls for four servings of these foods to be added to your diet.</p>
<p>The main premise of the book is that whole grains are not only good for helping you lose weight, but they are also important towards getting healthier. The authors state research and studies to show that whole grains can help prevent certain diseases and may be able to aid digestion. That is most likely due to the fact that you’ll be eating more than 48 grams of fiber a day, which is a big increase for most people.</p>
<p>The book includes some helpful recipes to get you started and the whole diet is mapped out in a very easy to understand way. Overall, while it may be difficult to follow, there are some good lifestyle changes that can be achieved from following the diet. We would have liked to have seen exercise focused on a bit more, but the do touch on it briefly. Since this is a book about changing the way you eat, more than a true “diet” book we can cut them a little slack on that area.</p>
<p>For those that like whole grains, making the switch will be pretty easy, but for those that have relied on white bread and processed flour, it will undoubtedly be difficult. However, the authors state that it is well worth the effort, if you can stick to it.</p>
<p>Overall, this is a very interesting book that offers up a lot of facts as well as some great recipes. While the diet may be too hard for most to stick to, you can still learn quite a lot from the book and use some of the recipes to enrich your current diet. We recommend the book to those looking for a healthier way to eat and for those that need to start eating foods that will do their bodies good. We can’t really recommend the diet plan per se, but you can still get a lot out of just reading the book and implementing a few changes in your normal diet.</p>
