Most people are aware of the fact that cutting down on calories and exercising are necessary for weight loss, but they often eventually run into a plateau, which can occur for a number of reasons. The body can get used to your exercise and dieting, and will eventually stop responding - But another vital reason that a plateau may occur is because you are not getting enough water. Most people are not aware of how important water is when it comes to losing weight. Water does several different things to help in your weight loss efforts. First of all, it helps to suppress your hunger, and lets you feel fuller longer when you have a good amount of water in your tummy. Other times, you will feel hungry when in reality you are simply thirsty. Sometimes you will eat because you think your stomach is hungry, when in reality what it is craving is water.

Water's role in weight loss does not end here, however. Water also helps significantly in metabolizing the fats that your body has stored. Water, for this reason, is one of the most vital pieces in the puzzle that is weight loss. It helps to decrease water retention by stimulating your kidneys. If you want to lose weight, you should drink the standard 8 glasses of water that are universally suggested, and then drink an additional 1 glass of water per every 25lbs of weight. If you weigh 200lbs then, you should drink the universal 8 glasses of water, followed by an 8 additional glasses of water in order to lose weight.

Water is also great at helping you to feel better. Individuals that are dehydrated have trouble remembering things, have difficulty keeping their focus, and even have low energy. People who are chronically dehydrated may have trouble finding the motivation to work out, but exercise is all too important to weight loss and cannot be avoided simply because you are feeling tired. If you are always feeling too tired to work out because you are constantly dehydrated, then it will be much more difficult for you to lose weight over time.

Dehydration can create the feeling of hunger. When you are thirsty, you will eat more. Dehydration can also cause problems with your blood sugar levels. Because your body thinks you're hungry, you will eat even when you do not need to, which will counteract the entire reason for your dieting and exercise in the first place. When you start to feel like you are hungry, start by drinking about 16 ounces of water, and wait twenty minutes or so. Is your appetite curbed? Then you were probably thirsty instead of hungry. If you are still feeling hungry, go ahead and eat, knowing that you will eat less now that you have a nice amount of water in you. Drinking water before a meal will always help you eat less food, which is an excellent way to lose weight.

The numbers can go even higher for those that exercise without stretching properly. A big portion of these injuries occur in the knee, which has led to the term “Runner’s Knee.” This is an injury that can affect anyone, even if they never actually run. Since it is painful and debilitating, it is important to understand how to prevent it and how to correct it.

The medical term for Runner’s Knee is iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). This refers to pain that is often felt laterally across the knee, after running or working out. It can be very painful and movement is usually quite limited. Some doctor’s may also refer to this condition as simple “overuse of the knee,” and that is a good description of how this injury occurs.

It is believed that although overuse can be attributed to this condition, it can affect anyone who lacks proper knee flexibility and those that do not properly warm up this area before working out or running. The iliotbial band runs from the top of your hip, all the way to the top of your tibia, and connects with several muscles in this area. The large amount of space here means that you will be dealing with a large portion of pain if you do injure this band. The band is responsible for pulling up the lower leg when you are running or performing any sort of knee bending exercise.

The best way to tell if you have Runner’s Knee is to pay attention to the pain you are experiencing. It will usually start after a few minutes in to your workout or a few miles in to your run. It will start as a dull ache that builds in intensity. It will feel particularly acute if you happen to be going downhill. If you try to flex your knee, you will feel intense pain once you’ve reached about 30% of flexion. The only way to completely remove this pain is to walk with your leg completely stiff, and that is not really convenient for most of us.

So, now that you know how it feels and how it happens, let’s look at fixing the problem. Stretching is vital, but you need to make sure that you are doing the stretches properly. You will need to find a riser that is four to six inches off the ground and stable. Next, move this near a bar or a wall where you can find some balance. Stand on the riser with your bad leg and lower the non-affected leg almost to the floor. Both legs should be locked for this exercise. Bend your affected knee slightly (about 20 degrees) and keep your other leg off the floor. Keep your upper body straight at all times during this stretch. 10 reps per day should be enough to get you started and you can increase frequency as you get stronger.

But as I also mentioned I am still on vacation.

For Easter my family went to La Quinta Spa and Resort Easter brunch... All you can eat deliciousness. I had BBQ short ribs, bacon, an omelet, sushi, shrimp, crab, and flourless chocolate tort. Wow was it good. Yikes was I full.

If you are ever in Palm Springs at Easter I highly recommend it. If you are on a diet I highly recommend you avoid it.

Fat man unleashed tells us that Chinese Buffets and Fat Men Don’t Mix... WeightLadder tells you that ANY all-you-can-eat buffet is dangerous for a diet. Delicious as it might be.

After 2-3 hours of couch riding basketball watching digesting I decided I needed to exercise off some of the food I had eaten... Luckily my vacation house has a 54 foot lap pool. 50 laps later I was feeling a little better about myself.

Another 50 laps tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon combined with not eating the entire kitchen and I should be at least no worse for wear.

Release Date - January 1, 2007

Brought to you by nutrition experts at Good Housekeeping, the Supermarket Diet offers a groundbreaking approach to navigating the supermarket aisles with weight loss in mind, and achieving long lasting weight loss success as a result. The book takes a simple and straight forward approach to getting the most out of your grocery store trips by knowing which aisles to visit and which to avoid, and how to tell the difference. The supermarket diet is heavily based on the concept of good nutrition, rather than necessarily just cutting calories, fats or carbs. It describes how to choose the best varieties of certain foods, such as choosing the right protein bar based on its fiber content, or choosing microwavable dinners in the freezer aisle based on how quickly they'll fill you up with fiber and protein. Choosing the right foods is the key to a healthy, long lasting weight loss effort, and the supermarket diet tells you exactly what you need to know to achieve this level of weight loss success without cutting out the foods you love.

Good Housekeeping is known for many things, and offering diet information is one of their most popular offerings. Now the magazine has created what is literally a diet revolution, allowing you to more effectively read food labels so that you can buy the right foods without accidentally sabotaging your diet. Sticking to a healthy and balanced menu that is high in fiber, low in calories, and moderate in the right amount of carbs, proteins and fats is attainable with this diet. You will love this diet for a number of reasons, including:

- Because it is an inexpensive and easy diet to follow. You can buy foods on your own budget, and much of the meal preparation takes 20 minutes or less.

- Because it is a flexible diet, allowing you to choose from a nearly endless variety of different foods based on your own needs.

- Because this diet is forgiving, allowing you to have chocolate, alcohol and all kinds of other treats without feeling like you are breaking your diet. There is even a calorie counter section that gives hints for 125 calorie snacks that will satisfy your cravings without making you break your diet.

The Supermarket diet lets you choose the foods you eat based on their actual nutrition content, rather than forcing you to cut calories drastically or reduce other nutrients that you require. This book provides diet and nutrition advice that is practical, easy to implement and actually drives the results that you have been seeking on a long term basis, without requiring that you starve yourself. The Supermarket Diet is all about good nutrition, which is the foundation for long term, healthy weight loss success.

Learning how to master grocery shopping is not difficult once you are aware of what to look for.

Shopping For - Bread

Recommended Brands - O Organics, Orowheat and Milton's

Tips for Buying –

When reading the label on bread varieties in the grocery store, you should be looking for the word “whole”. Whole wheat breads and whole grain breads are the best breads that you can buy. If you are not finding the word “whole” somewhere on the label, then many of the nutrients in the grains have unfortunately been stripped out. “Multigrain” and “enriched wheat” varieties of bread may still contain a significant amount of white flour.

When you see “made with whole grains” on the label, you need to know that it does not necessarily mean that the bread has whole wheat as its main ingredient.

When ingredients are listed on the packaging for a type of brain, they are listed by weight in descending order. What this means is that the very first ingredient in the list is the one that is present in the highest amount. Make sure that “whole grain” or “whole wheat” is listed as the first ingredient in any bread that you purchase.

You should be aiming to purchase bread varieties that come with 100 calories in each slice or less. These are going to be the most natural varieties for you to choose.

Shopping For - Cereals

Recommended Brands – Kashi Go Lean, Cheerios, Post Shredded Wheat, Kelloggs All-Bran, Quaker Oatmeal

Tips for Buying –

Just like when you are buying bread, when you buy a cereal you should be looking for one that has whole grain listed as being the first ingredient. This means that the ingredient that is present in the highest quantity in the cereal is whole grains.

You should be trying to buy varieties of cereal that have at least 2.5 grams of fat. Keep in mind that monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are the best types of fat in the foods that you buy.

You should also be looking for cereal varieties that either say that they are low in sugar or that they have “no sugar added”. There is no reason to add sugar to an otherwise healthy box of cereal.

If you plan on buying a granola cereal, make sure that you are reading and comprehending the label first. While granola cereals all may sound healthy, many of them are actually really high in sugar and unnecessary fats.

Remember, when buying multi grain and whole grain cereals, you can always sweeten them up later by adding fruit to the mix. You do not have to buy sugar laden cereals in order to enjoy breakfast.
